Disney’s latest fairy tale princess musical “Moana” is heading to a robust estimated $75 million-plus Thanksgiving holiday weekend total. One crucial contributor to this South Pacific animated feature, directed by the “Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin” team of Ron Clements and John Musker, is “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who needs only an Oscar to complete his Egot-qualifying “In the Heights” Grammy and 11 Tony wins for his second Broadway musical, “Hamilton,” plus a Primetime Emmy for his 2014 Tony Awards opening song “Bigger” for host Neil Patrick Harris. (The Pulitzer Prize for “Hamilton” is frosting on the cake.)

Don that hat and grab your umbrella because Meryl Streep in in talks to join the sequel to Mary Poppins, Variety reports. If Streep should accept, the Oscar winner joins Emily Blunt (who plays the titular Poppins) in Mary Poppins Returns, which would reunite the two and director Rob Marshall from Into the Woods — not to mention The Devil Wears Prada for the acting duo. Set in Depression-era London and concerns Jane and Michael Banks, who are now all grown up and have suffered a personal loss when they get a visit from the titular character. There is no news on who will play either Banks, but Hamilton star Manuel Miranda has been cast as Jack, a streetlamp lighter and friend of Blunt’s Poppins who will assumedly play a pivotal role in helping her coax the family out of sadness. The script is penned by David Magee, who recently adapted Life of Pi,...

Oscar winner Meryl Streep is in talks to join Emily Blunt is Disney's upcoming Mary Poppins Returns. The movie is being directed by Rob Marshall, and if Streep is cast, it would kind of be an Into the Woods reunion as they all worked on that movie together. Streep and Blunt also worked together on The Devil Wears Prada.
According to Variety, Streep would take on the role of Mary Poppins’ cousin, Topsy. This is a supporting role that wasn’t in the 1964 classic. Streep would also be required to sing in the role, which isn't a surprise. She's been singing a lot in movies lately. Like it or lump it, cinema’s most endearing nanny is set for a return in the latter stages of 2018, and though that release date for Mary Poppins Returns is still a ways away, that hasn’t prevented Disney from scooping up top-tier talent.
Chief among them is Edge of Tomorrow and Sicario actress Emily Blunt, who is on board to headline the long-rumored sequel as the magical caretaker opposite Broadway stalwart Lin-Manuel Miranda. With Rob Marshall already behind the lens, Variety has now reveals that the illustrious Meryl Streep is all but set to reteam with her Into the Woods director pending final negotiations.
In line to play the role of Poppins’ cousin, Topsy, Streep’s character wasn’t actually a part of Disney’s 1964 classic, though did feature fairly prominent throughout P.L. Travers’ novel series. That’s pretty reassuring, too, in the sense that Marshall and Co. are...

Believing that it might be worth getting one of those fun Oscar nominations for, Meryl Streep has reportedly entered talks for a role in Disney’s Mary Poppins sequel—which is still called Mary Poppins Returns, even though that’s a little silly. This comes from Variety, which says Streep would be playing Mary Poppins’ cousin Topsy, a character who Julie Andrews’ Poppins never felt the need to mention in the original film even though she’s apparently important enough to be played by Meryl freakin’ Streep. Variety notes that Streep will sing in the film if they reach a deal, and it’ll also reunite her with Into The Woods’ Rob Marshall and Emily Blunt, who are directing and starring in Returns (respectively).

21 years ago today, Jagged Little Pill hit record stores, soon to be a smash hit and eventually one of the best-selling albums of all time. The album is now the age that Alanis Morissette was when it was released — it came out a couple weeks after her 21st birthday. It was the third album from the Canadian singer but a major deviation from her first two studio albums, records that had a generic teen dance-pop sound before Morissette found the voice that would make her a breakout star. Alt-rock Jagged Little Pill captured the rollercoaster that is life as you’re transitioning from your teenage years into your 20s. Morissette was 19 when she wrote it. As evidenced by the album’s massive sales, there were plenty of people who identified with her lyrics and the raw emotion in the music, from “You Oughta Know,” an anthem for any woman who has been betrayed by someone they thought they loved, to the spiritual yearning in opening track “All I Really Want” to “You Learn,” one of the least angsty songs on the album, an ode to making mistakes and learning from them. Jagged Little Pill was nominated for nine Grammy Awards. Morissette’s win for Album of the Year in 1996 made her the youngest artist to receive the honor. She held that record for 14 years, until Taylor Swift won the award in 2010. Other notable June 13 happenings in pop culture history: • 1967: The Temptations’ single “You’re My Everything” was released. It got to the #3 spot on the U.S. R&B chart and #6 on the U.S. Pop chart. • 1969: The Rolling Stones introduced new guitarist Mick Taylor at a press conference in London’s Hyde Park. He made his live debut with the Stones that July at a free concert in Hyde Park. • 1970: The Beatles’ album Let It Be hit the top spot on the U.S. album chart. It held the #1 spot for four weeks. Also on this day, The Beatles’ “Long and Winding Road” hit #1 on the singles chart. • 1977: Matthew Garber, who had played Michael Banks in Mary Poppins, died at age 21. • 1988: Paula Abdul released her debut album, Forever Your Girl. • 1989: Jerry Lee Lewis was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. • 1989: The premiere screening of License to Kill is held in London. The James Bond film — Timothy Dalton’s second and final turn as 007 — opened in the U.S. the following month. • 2003: English group Arctic Monkeys played their first gig at The Grapes, a pub in Sheffield, England. • 2009: The final episode of Pushing Daisies finally aired, after the series’ cancelation back in November.

The last time Lin-Manuel Miranda attended the Tony Awards, he was nervous because “In the Heights” needed to win in order to lure audiences. It won best new musical.
That’s not a problem for his ticket-scalpers’ delight, “Hamilton,” his second Broadway musical. He stars in the production, wrote the book, music, and lyrics, and it scored a record-breaking 16 nominations. It swept the Tonys Sunday night with 11 awards including best new musical, and could eventually earn over $1 billion worldwide, according to The New York Times.
“Hamilton” also won the Pulitzer Prize for drama and a Grammy Award for best musical theater album. Because Miranda won an Emmy for writing Neil Patrick Harris’s closing rap at the 2014 Tonys, all he needs is an Oscar to become a member of the Egot club.

Now that he has utterly and completely conquered Broadway, it’ll be interesting to see how Hollywood handles Lin-Manuel Miranda. It’s clear that he’s already been embraced by the creative community. He and Jj Abrams had a lot of fun creating that cantina song for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and had apparently even more fun performing the song live for crowds waiting for the daily Hamilton ticket lottery. He’s working on songs for Moana, the Polynesian-themed Disney musical that will feature Dwayne Johnson singing. His long-rumored connection to the Mary Poppins sequel has finally been verified by an official press release from Disney. While I consider Mary Poppins one of the crown jewels of Disney’s entire filmography, I am not instantly opposed to a sequel. It’s clear now that they are not remaking the original, and considering how much other material P.L. Travers wrote...

Almost five decades on since the original graced theaters, the mere suggestion of a sequel to Disney’s Mary Poppins may sound really rather atrocious on paper. But that hasn’t quelled the company’s enthusiasm to return to the well of children’s fantasy and magical nannies, with today bringing word that Mary Poppins Returns has snapped up a December 25, 2018 release date.
The musical places Edge of Tomorrow and Sicario alum Emily Blunt in the title role of Mary Poppins, where she’ll star opposite Lin-Manuel Miranda, the actor-musician best known for his work on Broadway hit, Hamilton.

Disney has made it official: Emily Blunt and Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda will star in Mary Poppins Returns, a sequel to the 1964 classic film Mary Poppins, and Rob Marshall (Chicago) is directing. The film has a release date of December 25, 2018.
When Miranda's name surfaced as a possible co-star, there was some discussion about whether or not he'd contribute to the music of the movie as well as acting in it. That doesn't appear to be the case, because the press release doesn't mention anything about it; if he was helping out in the music department, I'd assume Disney would want to broadcast that as loudly as possible in order to capitalize on the crazy success of Hamilton.
December of 2018 is shaping up to be a busy movie season. DC has an untitled event film scheduled for that Christmas, Lord & Miller's animated Spider-Man hits on December 21, there's an Avatar sequel arriving around that time,...

When Hamilton won at the Grammys last week, it only increased my jealousy for anyone who has already seen it in person. The Broadway sensation was created by (and stars) Lin-Manuel Miranda, and even though he's popped up in movies and TV shows before, the success of the musical means that he's poised for breakout stardom. Variety reports that he's one step closer to becoming a household name, since he's in talks to star in Disney's Mary Poppins sequel opposite Emily Blunt.
If the deal goes through, Miranda will play Jack, a lamplighter character similar to Dick Van Dyke's Bert from the original 1964 movie, and he's expected to contribute to the music as well. Here's a quick breakdown of the premise:
The story is set in Depression-era London and revolving around a now-grown Michael Banks, who has children of his own. In tough times, big sister Jane returns and soon after,...

Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda is in talks to join the Walt Disney Studios’ planned sequel to Mary Poppins. Emily Blunt is in talks for the lead role, played by Julie Andrews in the 1964 film. Disney had no comment, but a source with knowledge of the project says the untitled film will connect with Mary’s charges, Jane and Michael Banks, now grown and with Michael’s own three kids in need of a nanny. Mary and her “lamplighter” friend Jack — kin to Bert the…...

Lin-Manuel Miranda, the star and creator of Broadway's hit musical Hamilton, is in talks to join Emily Blunt in Disney's Mary Poppins sequel. He will play the role of Jack in the new original musical. Sources say the story will center on the now grown-up Jane and Michael Banks, who have experienced a personal loss that results in the arrival of the magical Mary Poppins (Blunt). She teams up with her lamplighter friend Jack (Miranda) to help the family. Rob Marshall will direct and also is producing with Marc Platt and John DeLuca. Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman

Disney must feel like Emily Blunt is practically perfect in every way because they are in talks with her to play Mary Poppins in a new sequel being developed by director Rob Marshall. In my opinion, Blunt is the perfect choice to play this character, and I'm glad that Disney is looking to get her on board.
She was rumored to be up for the role late last year, and it looks like that rumor has turned out to be true. Disney released Mary Poppins in 1964 with Julie Andrews, and according to THR, this sequel is set to take place 20 years after the events of the first film. The report goes on to say the movie “will also take its cues from the book series that P.L. Travers wrote.” There are seven novels that they can draw material from.

THR are reporting that delightful English rose Emily Blunt is set to take on the iconic role of Mary Poppins in a long-gestating sequel to the 1964 classic.
Rob Marshall (Into the Woods, Chicago) is lined up to direct, with the storyline being said to take inspiration from original author P.L. Travers’ series of books. Considering there are eight to choose from, Marshall & co. are not lacking for inspiration.
The movie will follow a now-grown Michael Banks, who has children of his own. His sister Jane arrives on the scene to help out once he finds himself in a bind (something to do with a bank, perhaps?), with Mary Poppins reappearing not long after that.
The decades-late sequel was first announced in September of last year, with Blunt’s name emerging as a contender even then. In addition to this planned movie sequel, Marshall is also helping Disney orchestrate a new Broadway musical,...

Kristen Bell plays Mary Poppins in a new Funny or Die skit that has the iconic Disney nanny singing a revised version of "A Spoonful of Sugar" about her minimum wage pay.
Kristen Bell Plays Mary Poppins
Bell, closely resembling Julie Andrews in the 1964 feature film, tells Jane and Michael Banks that she’s quitting the nanny business because, as her tape measurer points out, “Mary Poppins Practically Perfect In Every Way Except Grossly Underpaid. “But you’ve got magical powers,” the kids protest, to which she replies, “You’d think that would entitle me to more than $7.25 an hour.
“Please don’t leave this choice position,” sings Jane, “We will die of malnutrition.”
After telling her ward not to be so dramatic, Mary Poppins launches into her song, singing, "In every job that must be done, you must be paid in more than fun.” Replacing “a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down,...

Mary Poppins (1964) was a first for me in two ways: one of the earliest movies I can remember seeing in a theater (I was five years old when it was reissued in 1973 and the Rialto Cinema in Westfield, New Jersey, the theater where I saw it, is actually one of the few remaining theaters from that era that is still in business) and one of the first movies I saw played back on a Vcr (in 1980). I could hardly believe my eyes at age 5 and wondered just how in the world Mary Poppins (she is never, ever to be called just “Mary”), the chimney sweeper, and her two young charges managed to make their way into the sidewalk paintings with all of the colorful characters. 40 years later, I could pretty much figure it out for myself having seen many behind-the-scenes documentaries. And yet even though the man...
