High School Musical fans waited a long time for the fourth movie. In 2019, it finally came out – not as fourth installment but as High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. Created by Tim Federle, it premiered on Disney+ in 2019.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
The first season of the TV show didn’t follow the usual storyline from the Disney movies. Instead, it focused on real high school students at East High, where the original High School Musical was filmed.
The original HSM debuted in 2006 and was an instant hit. Disney subsequently released two sequels to the original film. The main leads in the original cast were Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. But, it seems like NBA star Anthony Edwards wants to replace Efron if the remake ever happens.

Gareth Edwards' 2016 flick "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" told the story of how the Rebel Alliance in "Star Wars" came into possession of the Death Star blueprints the Rebels used as their central guide for its destruction. Audiences were told that "Many Bothans died to bring us this information," although none of those Bothans appeared in "Rogue One". Instead, Edwards' film focused on a loose-knit group of rebels who defied the plans of the Rebellion -- they went rogue -- in order to obtain the blueprints. The group was led by a young woman named Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), the daughter of one of the Death Star's architects.
The characters weren't terribly interesting, the dialogue was clunky at best, and the bland story was a frustratingly foregone conclusion -- the end scenes of "Rogue One" link directly to the first scenes of "Star Wars" -- but Edwards' film accrued...

Gareth Edwards had what could easily be described as a meteoric rise through Hollywood's directing ranks. After directing his mega-low-budget acclaimed sci-fi feature debut "Monsters," he was selected to helm America's second attempt at bringing one of the most legendary monsters in the history of cinema to the screen. The result was 2014's "Godzilla," which kicked off the MonsterVerse, a franchise that is still going today. More importantly, it secured him a dream job directing "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." It was back-to-back blockbusters in huge franchises.
Even though the two films are wildly different from one another, the experience of making "Godzilla" did inform Edwards' approach to making "Rogue One." In a Reddit Ama from 2016, the director was asked what lessons he took from his 2014 monster movie with him to a galaxy far, far away. Here's what he had to say:
"I guess there are many lessons. Visually,...

2024 seems to be starting off just like 2023 for Ryan Edwards. The troubled former Teen Mom star spent much of 2023 in and out of courtrooms and rehab. While Edwards appeared to be keeping mostly out of trouble to finish up 2023, he is allegedly back to his old tricks. Edwards’ ex-wife, Mackenzie Standifer, filed a report accusing Edwards of sending threatening text messages.
Ryan Edwards accused of sending menacing messages to ex-wife
According to the Ashley Reality Roundup Group, the problem started on Jan. 31. Reportedly, Edwards contacted Standifer to let her know he’d be coming by to pick up a computer cord. Standifer called the police and asked for a unit to be on standup when he arrived.
Police were present when Edwards entered the home and attempted to locate the cord. Police left with Edwards, but it appears their presence irritated him. He reportedly did not find what he was looking for.

Veteran broadcaster Bob Edwards, best known for his long-tenured career with National Public Radio (NPR), where he anchored Morning Edition for almost 25 years, has died. He was 76. NPR CEO John Lansing confirmed the passing on Monday, noting Edwards died “peacefully” on Saturday night (February 10) with his daughters and wife, NPR anchor Windsor Johnston, at his side. “He smiled as we played the well wishes, loving memories and messages of healing that you all so kindly took the time to record for him,” Johnston wrote in a statement, per NBC News. “A tear slid down his face as he listened to those familiar voices under the bed of the old ‘Morning Edition’ theme.” According to The Washington Post, Edwards passed away at a rehabilitation center in Arlington, Virginia, of metastatic bladder cancer and a heart ailment. “We are saddened to hear that Bob Edwards has passed away,” Lansing said in a statement.

Bob Edwards, a Peabody-winning National Radio Hall of Famer who anchored NPR’s Morning Edition for nearly a quarter-century before moving to satellite radio, died Saturday. He was 76. National Public Radio announced his death but did not provide details.
Edwards joined the radio pubcaster in 1974 and soon afterward became a co-host of its signature news program All Things Considered with Susan Stamberg. He left that show in 1979 to be the founding anchor of Morning Edition, which he would host with his warm baritone until 2004. His first interview for the show was Charles Osgood, who died last month.
“Bob Edwards understood the intimate and directly personal connection with audiences that distinguishes audio journalism from other mediums,” NPR CEO John Lansing wrote in announcing the death, “and for decades he was a trusted voice in the lives of millions of public radio listeners.”

1964's "The Pink Panther" is not a complex film. There is little to suggest a full-fledged film series in its story of a jewel with the shape of a panther buried deep within. Somehow, that premise resulted in a series of films lasting decades, with eleven unique (or mostly unique) live-action entries. And the cartoon character who showed up in the title sequence, dancing to Henry Mancini's iconic theme music? There was a Saturday morning series starring him that ran in various incarnations from 1969 to 1980.
When writer Maurice Richlin pursued director Blake Edwards with an idea for a film about a jewel thief, neither man could have predicted the surprising longevity of that idea. Certainly, they couldn't have predicted that the extremely thin premise of "The Pink Panther" would result in a series of films running into the 1990s. Nor could they have predicted that the protagonist would be...

It has been a banner year at the box office. The recovery in the aftermath of the pandemic has been slower than many in the industry were hoping for, but the good news is that the box office, overall, is up in 2023 compared to 2022. Audiences are proving that they are more than willing to return to theaters when properly motivated to do so. What we learned this year is that what worked in the past isn't going to work in the future. From sequels that seemingly nobody asked for and even superhero movies, the tastes of the moviegoing public appear to be changing. For the first time in decades, the three biggest movies of the year — "Barbie," "Oppenheimer," and "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" — are not sequels. That says an awful lot.
No year, not even the best year in cinematic history, is devoid of misfires. It's just the cost of doing business.

Director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla) returned to theaters back in September with The Creator, and the sci-fi action thriller is now headed home to Hulu this month.
The Creator will be streaming exclusively on Hulu beginning December 20. If you’d rather not wait, the film is currently available for VOD rental beginning at just $5.99.
At the worldwide box office, The Creator ended its run with $104 million, which would’ve been a win for an original genre movie if not for the $80 million price tag. An $80 million production budget for a movie on this scale is relatively cheap, it’s important to note, but the film needed to make quite a bit more money in theaters to be considered a box office success.
The film stars John David Washington (Tenet), Gemma Chan (Eternals), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Sturgill Simpson (Dog), newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles and Academy Award® winner Allison Janney (I,...

Though it took place outside of the Skywalker Saga, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is still one of the best-reviewed films in the Star Wars franchise. Much of the credit for that has gone to director Gareth Edwards, who showed an uncanny knack for recreating the Star Wars universe in a prequel. At the time of Rogue One’s release, Edwards spoke about that the secret formula for creating a Star Wars future actually has to do with mining the past. It looks like another stand-up comic has decided to expand on his stage persona and make the jump to a feature film. Of course, that’s nothing new as comedians have been doing this since the first filmed pratfall or wise-crack. Things are a bit more welcoming now as the onslaught of streaming services have put out a big “welcome mat” to the jokesters, raking in lots of new subscribers with taped comedy concerts, usually running about an hour or so, perfect for those needing a quick fix of laughter. It has worked for Kevin Hart and Amy Schumer, and Jo Koy’s autobiographical Easter Sunday certainly found an audience at the multiplex. Will the same happen to this touring comic who pushes against the current culture? Well, it’s going straight to streaming, which might be the perfect home for a trio of Old Dads.

In the letter, posted to the blog site Medium, the screenwriters mention the statements already issued by other Hollywood guilds, including SAG-AFTRA and the directors’ guild.

Filmmaker Gareth Edwards is coming off his epic sci-fi original film, “The Creator,” a film that saved millions of dollars in VFX by essentially doing it all after the fact. Meaning instead of setting up expensive green screens, blue screens, and mo-cap suits to capture the spots where VFX would typically be inserted, Edwards and his team just shot the movie generally as one would in the wild and then basically Photoshopped on all the VFX afterward.

Pop star Cher, who is also called the ‘Goddess of Pop’, is not letting her age stop her from living her life or fall in love, as the 77-year old is still dating. Since the music legend and her boyfriend, music producer Alexander “A.E.” Edwards, went public with their relationship last year, their romance has fueled headlines. So far, the singer is relishing her romance with her 37-year old hubby.
Talking about their romance, Cher said: “Alexander’s got diamond teeth, tattoos, white hair, and he’s way younger. He’s a beautiful man. Also, I think it’s fun to be interested in somebody else’s love life!” ‘People’ reported.
The pair met “for about 15 minutes” one year ago at a Paris Fashion Week event, she recalls, and a mutual friend gave him her number.

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator,” in theaters now, is a unique kind of sci-fi blockbuster from a major studio in that, while it looks like it cost a lot to make, the “Rogue One” director and his filmmaking team’s indie spirit and approach to the production actually kept the budget of the 20th Century Studios film under $100 million. Here’s how they did it.
The film is a tale set in the distant sci-fi future, where a war against artificial intelligence rages on. The U.S. is almost completely anti-ai while New Asia, a region of southeast Asia, still allows it. A former special operative (played by John David Washington), is tasked with tracking down the AI’s secret weapon: a little kid (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) who has the power to control technology.

There’s a scene in 20th Century Studios’ The Creator during which AIs wreak havoc on Los Angeles as a TV journalist warns that they are after jobs. But that’s not what director Gareth Edwards, who co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Weitz, actually believes. “I don’t think AI wants our jobs at all,” Edwards says in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter‘s Behind the Screen podcast.
Edwards recalls that Weitz may have written that line around 2019, long before AI became a pivotal topic in Hollywood and a central issue in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. “ChatGPT seems to not want anything,” the director says of artificial intelligence today. “But it is an amazing tool. It is going to disrupt a lot of things. We will get to the side of it and I think we will be grateful that it happened. Just like all the other big technological advances like cars,...

Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser was “devastated” when Warner Bros. announced that “Dune: Part Two” was shifting its release date from Nov. 2023 to March 2024.
“I was really ready to start talking about it,” he tells Variety. However, the move means he can focus his attention on his other film, Gareth Edwards’ $80 million visual spectacular “The Creator.”
Fraser shared co-cinematographer duties with Oren Soffer on the film, taking an experimental approach to shooting futuristic landscapes. The production aimed to create the grandness and visual scale of a huge blockbuster film, but on a more modest budget. And he achieved it.
“Gareth and wanted to maximize everyone’s toil on this,” Fraser shares. “So, when we put two actors in a room together with a camera, we looked at how many people we really needed standing outside.”
Next, the pair spent extensive time ahead of production figuring out the infrastructure of the shoot.

On big budget spectacles, the tail of VFX often wags the dog of principal photography. With The Creator—an $80 million sci-fi epic about a war between mankind and humanoid AI starring John David Washington—director Gareth Edwards sought to reverse that arrangement. The Monsters and Rogue One filmmaker has described the process of meticulously recreating previs on set as painting a target on the wall and trying to fire an arrow into the bullseye. Gareth Edwards has rubbished claims that he lost control of 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story'.The 48-year-old filmmaker helmed the 2016 sci-fi spin-off flick before Tony Gilroy was hired to oversee extensive reshoots and has now hit out at the "total inaccuracy" of claims that he was sidelined during the closing stages of production.During an appearance on Kcrw’s ‘The Business’ podcast, Gareth said: "The stuff that's out there on the internet about what happened on that film – there is so much inaccuracy about the whole thing. "Tony [Gilroy] came in, and he did a lot of great work, for sure. No doubt about it. But we all worked together until the entire last minute of that movie. The very last thing that we filmed in the pickup shoot was the Darth Vader corridor scene. I did all of that stuff."Edwards took a lengthy break from filmmaking before returning...

Gareth Edwards’ “The Creator” was a resourceful sci-fi endeavor with an $80 million production budget, but its visuals are on par with epic blockbusters that cost three times that amount. Rather than shoot on a studio backlot, the filmmaker behind “Godzilla” and “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” opted to shoot in eight different countries, including Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia and Japan.
For an all-out climatic action sequence set in Thailand, a village comes under attack by the U.S. Military as John David Washington’s protagonist defuses a bomb. Visual effects supervisor at Industrial Light and Magic (Ilm) Jay Cooper and supervising sound editor Erik Aadahl explain how the setpiece came together.
“There was nothing temped in, it was just production dialogue and nothing else,” Aadahl explained. “It was an amazing blank canvas to start working with. There were no visual effects, just a title that said ‘Tank on the Hill.

Gareth Edwards has made films at both ends of the budget spectrum, and his latest sci-fi film, The Creator, is his valiant attempt to find a balance between the two.
In his feature directorial debut, Monsters (2010), Edwards received a crash course in independent guerrilla filmmaking, as he roamed around Latin America with Scoot McNairy, Whitney Able and a skeleton crew, shooting an original sci-fi film on the fly with prosumer-grade equipment. With a determination to find real-world locations that were compelling in and of themselves, Edwards minimized any dependency on VFX augmentation, allowing him to cut together his movie and then composite only the VFX elements that were absolutely necessary.
And following his experiences as the director of the $160 million-budgeted Godzilla (2014) and the $220-million Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), Edwards wanted the best of both worlds for his new John David Washington-led sci-fi film about a war between humans and AI.

Gareth Edwards' "The Creator" is set largely in the year 2070, which is only 47 years from the year it was made. Note that 47 years prior to the present was 1976. Although the people in 1976 likely couldn't have predicted technologies like electric cars, smartphones, and the internet, it still seems like a bold postulation that A.I. will advance as rapidly as it does in "The Creator." In the 2070 of Edwards' film, A.I. has already dropped a nuclear bomb on Los Angeles, society has largely been rebuilt, and androids with realistic human faces walk among us. Indeed, robots have formed their own societies and villages and cultures.
An opening montage, however, implies that "The Creator" takes place in an alternate history where robots were explored in the 1950s, but advanced rapidly, gaining sentience shortly thereafter. There are grainy news clips of humanoid androids on auto assembly lines as early as what looks like the 1960s.

Director Gareth Edwards returned after a nearly seven-year absence with his original sci-fi film "The Creator" over the weekend. It was his first movie since 2016's $1 billion hit "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," which was his second hit franchise blockbuster in a row following 2014's "Godzilla." Unfortunately, it looks like his attempt to make a massive-scale sci-fi film outside the confines of established IP isn't going to pan out, as Edwards' latest was a big letdown on opening weekend.
"The Creator" faced heavy competition as both "Saw X" and "Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie" also opened over the weekend, with "Dumb Money" additionally expanding after a few weeks in limited release. In the end, "Paw Patrol" took the top spot with a $23 million haul, while "Saw X" also had a very solid debut with $18.3 million. Sadly, that left Edwards' latest, which hails from Disney's 20th Century Studios, settling for third place with $14 million,...

For “The Creator,” writer/director Gareth Edwards developed a world in the not-so-distant future where mankind and AI are locked in a battle for survival.
As it has throughout history, war has spurred technological development: the U.S. Army deployed a massive orbital defense platform called Nomad to hunt down AI targets, and the AI leader known as The Creator manufactured a weapon to disable it — the child Alpha Omega aka Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles).
TheWrap sat down with Edwards to talk about the film’s AI war with humanity, its origin and who emerges victorious at the end of the film.
Spoiler alert: Read on for major plot reveals from “The Creator.”

Coming off of a big summer led by the Barbenheimer phenomenon as both "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" made more money than anyone could have possibly expected, the fall moviegoing season has, thus far, been a little disappointing. But September gave way to October this past weekend with a trio of big releases hitting theaters in the form of "Saw X," "Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie," and the original sci-fi film "The Creator" (read our review here). It was, all at once, an encouraging result in some ways and a disappointing one for those who want to see more adult-skewing, non-horror fare in theaters.
While it was pegged as a close race heading into the weekend, the family-friendly flick won out with relative ease. "Paw Patrol" topped the charts with a mighty $23 million opening, per The Numbers. "Saw X" had to settle for second with $18 million. That said, it's still a big...

With Gareth Edwards on the promotional circuit for his new sci-fi epic The Creator, folks have been asking him repeatedly about the reported behind-the-scenes drama on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While he previously said he has no regrets concerning his time with Lucasfilm, in a new interview, he denies that he was ever not working on the film. The popular myth is that Edwards was replaced by Tony Gilroy, the movie’s co-writer as director (with Gilroy having already directed Michael Clayton and The Bourne Legacy). He insists that’s not the case. Speaking with Kcrw’s The Business (excepted by THR), he says all the gossip surrounding the film is inaccurate. “Tony came in, and he did a lot of great work, for sure. No doubt about it. But we all worked together until the last minute of that movie.”

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” director Gareth Edwards is once again addressing the multiple reports about the 2016 film requiring extensive reshoots overseen by Tony Gilroy (the “Andor” creator was hired by Lucasfilm to join the “Rogue One” team in June 2016).
On a recent episode of Kcrw’s “The Business” podcast, Edwards claimed “there is so much inaccuracy” about the making of the “Star Wars” prequel.

Gareth Edwards has many thoughts on the ending of “The Creator,” but he’s even more interested in what audiences think about how the sci-fi film — which depicts a war between mankind and AI — concludes.
In any war, the director notes, sacrifices are made. And in “The Creator’s” case, the ending is “bittersweet,” Edwards noted.
TheWrap asked him to elaborate on the final scenes and their implications (find out if there’s a post-credit here). Obviously, major spoilers from “The Creator” lie ahead, so you’ve been warned.

In the final act, Joshua (John David Washington) rescues the AI child Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles) from the U.S. Army.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is considered a high point for the franchise following Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm in 2012. The film grossed more than $1 billion globally and launched the critically acclaimed prequel series Andor on Disney+.
The path to getting there has become the stuff of Star Wars legend, with stories of reshoots and creative overhauls well-documented in the press. But according to director Gareth Edwards, “there is so much inaccuracy” circulating about the film’s making.
In June 2016, Lucasfilm hired Oscar-nominated writer Tony Gilroy to join the Rogue One team. Reports emerged that his influence was so great that he has been considered the film’s ghost director, overseeing reshoots and postproduction.

As explained by the film director Gareth Edwards regarding the guerrilla-style filmmaking approach used to shoot the movie, the tools were also confirmed. It’s amazing to reveal that this $80,000,000 budget sci-fi movie was shot on these affordable and reachable tools: Sony FX3, Ronin RS2, Atomos Ninja, Kowa 75mm anamorphic, and ProRes Raw.

Y.M.Cinema was the first to report that this mega-budget Hollywood sci-fi production was shot on a prosumer camera, Sony FX3. As opposed to what many have thought, the Arri Alexa 65 was not involved in this project. The use of the Sony FX3 has contributed a lot to the desired style that Director Gareth Edwards was eager for.

A director uniquely skilled at capturing scale and creating lived-in worlds, Gareth Edwards has infused new visual energy into such iconic franchises as Godzilla and Star Wars. With The Creator, he tops himself in terms of world-building and generating a sense of awe.
The sci-fi epic begins in 2065, shortly after a prologue explains that artificial intelligence has advanced to the point that it’s been integrated into nearly every facet of human existence. This has largely been a boon to humanity, as they take over the jobs no one wants to do, with a competence that exceeds human intellect. It proves to have its problems, however, when the AI denotes a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles, prompting a war between the United States, which is seeking to wipe out all AI, and the country of New Asia, which protects and harbors them.

On Wednesday, Grammy-winning icon Cher, 77, was photographed with her music executive boyfriend Alexander “Ae” Edwards, 37, in the front row of the Balmain show at Paris Fashion Week.
Cher, 77, wore a long velvet white jacket with a black embroidered design and slacks. Edwards coordinated with her, dressed in black sunglasses and a black suit with a white button-down. Throughout the show, the two were seen nuzzled up against one another.
The music industry duo met at Paris Fashion Week last year and began to date in the fall of 2022. They made headlines when they were spotted with hands interlocked in November. A few days later Cher addressed the two’s 40-year age gap in a since-deleted post to X (previously Twitter) where she wrote: “Love Doesn’T Know Math, It Sees .”
In December, Cher appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show and gushed about her relationship with Edwards. “On paper, it’s kind of ridiculous,...

The Creator has been a long time coming for Gareth Edwards. The earliest spark of the movie occurred to him nearly seven years ago after finishing work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The world has thus had a lot of time to change and change again as the film developed. Which makes its arrival in cinemas in September 2023 feel like kismet. After all, this is a film about humans ruthlessly hunting down artificial intelligence, with the desire being to eradicate A.I., root and stem.
“I remember when we wrote the first draft about four years ago,” Edwards says when we catch up with him on the eve of The Creator’s theatrical release. “And there was a big studio note. Everyone who read the screenplay would ask, ‘But why would you ban A.I.? Why would anyone do that? That sounds like an amazing tool, it doesn’t make sense.
