Another year gone by and another lot of impressive newbies have arrived on the Bollywood scene to make their mark. Here are the Top 5 Female Debutants for the year 2012.
5. Esha Gupta – Jannat 2
At no. 5 we have the dusky beauty who won everyone’s heart with the notorious ‘serial kisser’ in not one of but two films in her very first year. Esha won Miss Photogenic in the Femina Miss India contest in 2007 and featured in the Kingfisher Calendar in 2010, before being spotted and starring in her debut film. She had one of the busiest debut years with not one but three films, Jannat 2, Raaz 3 and Chakravyuh. Just when we thought she’d get the ‘Bhatt girl’ title she surprised us in the last release, a Prakash Jha directorial. Thus far she’s gotten mixed reviews for her performance however her appearance impressed us enough to warrant a position on this countdown.

Among all of India’s filmmakers today Anurag Kashyap is perhaps the only one whose films insist on being watched in a multiplex. Every other filmmaker’s efforts only merit DVD viewing. Since I have been so drawn to his films that I have journeyed to see them, I was quite excited when Gangs of Wasseypur was announced. I then took stock of what his films meant to me but, curiously enough, while Black Friday (2004) still largely remained in my memory, I retained only a few scattered images from Dev D (2009) and Gulaal (2009). The ‘avant-garde’ effort No Smoking (2007), of course, always struck me as babble but was there something lacking in the other two films that I recollected them so little?
Anurag Kashyap’s chief strength is his sharp eye for the milieu but his films also seem curiously blank – as if there was little else underneath surface. Since his style is so visceral,...

Anurag Kashyap with his cast and crew recently celebrated the box office success of Gangs of Wasseypur. Since its release on 22nd June, the film has earned Rs 23 crore from India alone. With a total budget of around Rs 18.4 crore and the second part still to come, you would definitely call that a winning proposition.
Kashyap has announced the release of part 2 on 8th August and its trailer is just as intriguing and exciting. First previewed at the recent 65th Cannes International Film Festival and shown back to back with part 1, in part 2 the focus shifts to Manoj Bajpai’s son Faisal Khan played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui. His character takes over his father’s crime empire in Wasseypur.

Gangs Of Wasseypur opened to mixed reviews, but the makers of the film are ready with the second installment of the two part film. However, they are skeptical of the release date. The reason is quiet obvious. Gangs Of Wasseypur part one was story of Sardar Khan and Ramadir Singh based on Shafi Khan and Surya Dev Singh in real life and both of them being dead for long time. So in a manner it didn't affect anyone else's life immediately and there was no fear of protest. While part two is essentially the story of Sardar Khan's son Faisal Khan, who is Faheem Khan in real life. Faheem Khan is alive and in jail of Dhanbad and also rules most of Wasseypur and Dhanbad mafia. Insiders say that the makers are trying to have a dialogue and resolve all issues before its out of the way and becomes difficult to handle.
