A sequel to the 2017 blockbuster “Confidential Assignment”, in which the main leads returns to a different director for a relatively much the same ordeal they went through before. Now, however, they have to put up with an unwelcomed FBI agent from the States. The movie went on to become the third highest-grossing Korean film of 2022 besides receiving the Blue Dragon Film Awards’ “Popular Star Award” for its stars Im Yoon-ah and Daniel Henney.
The film kicks off in New York City where FBI agent Jack (Daniel Henney) intercepts a drug deal and arrests the ruthless North Korean crime leader Jang Myong-jun (Jin Seon-kyu). While Jang is being transported back to Pyongyang, his thugs ambush the FBI agents and he escapes after a fierce street shootout. Somehow, he manages to sneak his way into Seoul with one billion dollars’ worth of North Korean fund thus prompting the North Korean government to...

2019, the centennial of South Korean cinema, proved to be an interesting year for the country’s film industry. Where mainstream cinema saw great commercial and critical success with films like “Parasite”, “Extreme Job” and “Exit”, independent and arthouse cinema also thrived, with several films winning important awards at film festivals around the world. This last aspect is probably the most hopeful for Korean cinema, whose independent part has been suffering for years, but through a number of initiatives, mostly coming from Busan International Film Festival, seems to start picking up again. The success of those films is still festival-driven and not distribution-driven, but the fact remains that something seems to be changing in the Korean movie industry, as the people “running the show” begin to realize that they cannot continue in the exactly same path that kickstarted the success of local cinema more than twenty years ago.

A large part of S. Korean cinema has been moving towards the style of Hollywood blockbusters during the last decades, through the combination of action, comedy, and impressive production values. “Confidential Assignment” is a distinct sample of this tendency, with the added commercial value of presenting the North vs South theme.
“Confidential Assignment ” screened as part of the Asian selection at Fantasia International Film Festival
North Korean detective Cheol-ryeong lost his wife and unit when his superior Cpt. Cha betrayed him in order to steal engraving plates that print U.S.counterfeit bills. Soon after, Cha defects to S. Korea, along with some of his associates, where he plans to sell the plates. Cheol-ryeong, who has been subjected to brutal interrogation in the North regarding his involvement in the case, is eventually dispatched to the South, as part of a delegation, after convincing his higher-ups that he will get Cha no matter what.

Now, halfway into the year, he stars in Lee Sang-geun’s debut film “Exit”.
