Elon Musk is backing Nelson Peltz in the proxy battle for the future of Disney.
Onlookers are waiting with baited breath after the bitter voting to select Disney’s board of directors closed last night, with CEO Bob Iger’s nominees appearing likely to win out. However, that didn’t stop X/Twitter and Tesla owner Musk taking to social media this morning to provide his two cents.
He wrote: “Nelson Peltz should definitely be on the Disney board! He would help reform the company, improve the quality of product and generally serve in the best interests of shareholders, as he has done at many other companies. This would significantly improve Disney’s share price.”

It’s called a Napoleon complex for a reason.
With the first round of Oscar voting closing out, I spent the long MLK weekend catching up on narrative films I’ve yet to see. Yes. I know. I’m a little late to the party, but my day job of watching other people’s amazing docs has bled into my evenings of watching other people’s amazing narrative features.
Among the films, I watched Mr. Ridley Scott’s Napoleon with our older son.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the notion of Palestinian statehood in a news conference on Thursday, claiming it “would endanger the state of Israel.” But he also invoked geographical language that has become a point of bitter contention as Israel’s continued military bombardment of Gaza continues in response to the Hamas attack of Oct. 7, saying that “in the future, the state of Israel has to control the entire area from the river to the sea,” according to an English translation of the speech from Israeli news channel i24News.

Billionaire hedge fund chief and burgeoning Internet Main Character Bill Ackman used the afternoon of Martin Luther King Jr. Day to claim the civil rights leader would have been against the movement for diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education and businesses. Not even two weeks into the new year, and it looks as though far-right agitators have honed in on the scapegoat of the season: Dei, shorthand for “diversity, equity and inclusion” initiatives and policies that can be implemented in workplaces and educational institutions.
Although long included in the litany of vilified concepts that conservatives like to complain about — from “wokeness” to gender fluidity to Critical Race Theory — Dei has taken a new place of prominence after being scapegoated for two incidents that made headlines in early 2024. One was the ouster...

Bill Ackman, billionaire founder and CEO of hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management, has become a new and formidable actor in the American culture wars thanks to his connections to Harvard University. But by stepping into the fray, he inadvertently took up the mantle of a social media archetype that is awkward and difficult to shed: He’s 2024’s first “wife guy.”
Back in early November, a month after Hamas militants’ deadly Oct. 7 attack on Israel, Ackman, who is Jewish, addressed a 3,000-word open letter on X (formerly Twitter) to Claudine Gay,...

The last time Nelson Peltz and his firm Trian Partners waged a proxy battle against Disney, less than a year ago, they laid out their concerns in a PowerPoint presentation. Disney needed to cut costs, Trian said. It needed to bring back its dividend and get its free cash flow back on track. Disney was “over-earning” at its theme parks, gouging guests and not investing enough.
Bob Iger’s return as CEO in November 2022 and the stock surge that followed ultimately called Peltz off. “This was a great win for all the shareholders. Management at Disney now plans to do everything that we wanted them to do,” Peltz told CNBC in February, announcing that he was dropping his proxy fight.
Indeed, Disney did tackle essentially all of Peltz’s concerns. The company has cut $7.5 billion in costs and laid off thousands of employees. It is bringing back its dividend, and...

Netflix rose handily in after-hours trading Wednesday following news that Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital has acquired more than 3.1 million shares to become a top-20 stockholder.
He bought on a big dip. The streamer’s stock has been killed since its fourth-quarter earnings report last week, and amid a series of broad market selloffs tied to interest rate jitters. Investors reacted negatively to Q4 subscriber growth and management guidance. In Pershing Square’s letter to shareholders today, Ackman called that an “opportunity to acquire Netflix at an attractive valuation.” The shares closed down 1.8% but reversed course after hours, up nearly 5%.
“We have greatly admired Netflix both as consumers and as investors, but have never previously owned a stake in the company,” he said, calling the platform founded by Reed Hastings “a primary beneficiary of the growth in streaming and the decline in linear TV driven by its superior customer experience,...

Vivendi, the parent company of Canal Plus Group, is set to acquire a 17.5% stake in Lagardere, the French media, publishing and travel retail conglomerate, from Amber Capital in the next few days.
Vivendi will own 45.1% of the Lagardère capital following the acquisition of 24,685,108 shares at a price of €24.10 ($27.27) per share. The company said the transaction will not imply any cash transfers from either party since Amber Capital will keep the funds received as cash collateral from Vivendi.
If approved by regulatory authorities, the transaction will place Vivendi above the 30% share capital and voting right threshold in Lagardere. As such, Vivendi said it will make a takeover bid at the same price, €24.10 per share, for the remaining stake in Lagardère on Feb. 2022. Magnolia Pictures has come aboard the documentary “Citizen Ashe” from Emmy winner Rex Miller and Academy Award nominee Sam Pollard. The nonfiction awards hopeful will be heading to theaters on Dec. 3 in New York and Dec. 10 in Los Angeles, hoping for Oscar recognition at the height of awards season.
Accompanying an Academy campaign, and produced by Dogwoof for CNN Films and HBO Max, the film explores the legacy of three-time tennis legend and humanitarian Arthur Ashe, who broke barriers in the sport and won three Grand Slams. It’s a safe bet that there’ll be a Hollywood dramatization of Ted Braun’s documentary about the machinations of financial titans revolving around Herbalife, the nutrition supplement company that’s been widely condemned as a massive pyramid scheme. Filled with colorful characters easily rivaling those in The Big Short or Showtime’s Billions, Betting on Zero is a well-done if not stylistically distinctive nonfiction effort that nonetheless proves fascinating due to its subject matter.

“Betting on Zero” is not here to make you a believer. In fact, if there’s anything that Ted Braun’s examination of the meteoric, global rise of Herbalife shows, it’s that belief in other individuals is a dangerous task, whether that person is promising financial windfall, long-term stability or thorough justice. It may not be entirely inspiring, but “Betting on Zero” captures the everyone-for-themselves desperation that would make any wronged individual furious, be they jilted employee or frustrated stockholder.

From “Darfur Now” writer/director Ted Braun comes docu-thriller “Betting on Zero” following hedge fund titan Bill Ackman as he puts $1 billion on the line in his crusade to expose Herbalife as the largest pyramid scheme in history. Herbalife claims Ackman is simply a market manipulator out to make a fortune from short-selling their stock, but Ackman insists Herbalife deliberately targets low-income and immigrant communities and robs them of their life savings. Distributed by Gunpowder and Sky, the film will hit theaters in major and regional markets on March 17 following National Consumer Protection Week. Also Read: Richard Schickel, Veteran Film Critic.

It uses clearly laid out and well explained graphics to not only explain technical terms like CDOs (Collateralised Debt Obligations), derivatives, and MBSs (Mortgage Backed Securities) but to show exactly how this large scale fraud was accomplished - a...
