As a publication about film, we find ourselves in the peculiar position of publishing during a moment when theatrical access to movies, and their ongoing future, is as much in question as everything else. During this suspension of normal filmwatching habits, we’ve reached out to contributors, filmmakers and friends, inviting them to find an alternate path to the movies by participating in a writing exercise engaging with any book about or lightly intersecting with film, in whatever way makes sense to them. Today: Brendan Byrne on David Mamet’s Three Uses of the Knife: On the Nature and Purpose of Drama. The […]...

There’s not a more overwrought and overused genre trope as the found footage format, at least in terms of direct to DVD movies, with many film makers using the format in place of having a decent story. Which means – at least for me – the sub-genre has become something of a nadir when it comes to horror.
However once in a while the format can be used to great effect, and this year there have been some stellar entries in the found-footage genre, be it in the cinema or on DVD: The Den, Willow Creek, Across the River, The Cellar and Black Water Vampire. And now you can add Aussie horror Prying Eyes (such a poor re-title of There’s Something in the Pilliga) to the list.

If you are an aspiring filmmakers who wants to make your first feature, all you need are a script, a video camera, a tiny crew, actors who are willing to defer their fees and about $6,000.
That.s what it took for Eddie Arya to write, produce, direct and shoot The Navigator, a psychological thriller about a family who are heading off for a vacation when their Gps system diverts them to a scary place.
Filming started in the Blue Mountains in January, shooting at weekends because everyone involved has full-time day jobs. The cast comprising Jamie Vergan, Sarah Bishop, Matthew Grego, Brendan Byrne, Gemma Laurelle and Audrey and Gracie Williams agreed to defer their fees, as did the crew, but had their meals provided.
A mobile technical consultant for Optus, Arya raised enough money to shoot the film by selling his motorcycle and a Jeep Laredo.
