Was the prime contender for the captaincy of Australia in the mid-1950s but the Australian Cricket Board appointed Ian Craig, who ironically himself was in favour of Harvey being appointed the skipper and wanted to resign for the same reasons. Harvey prohibited Craig from doing so and volunteered to be his vice-captain.
