After the news last week that Um staffer Will Chapman was recovering from a transplant operation, the agency’s boss Mat Baxter has written an open letter to the industry.
All too often our industry is at war with itself. We argue tirelessly. We relentlessly undercut one another. And worse still, there is nastiness and bullying on our industry websites that puts other “professions” to shame.
So, in a business best characterised by its divisiveness and infighting, the times when we unite are rare and pretty special.
There was one such moment recently when the industry came together to help a staff member of ours, Will Chapman. At only 20 years old, Will was in desperate need of a double lung and heart transplant. His doctors had placed him on the donor organ waiting list but things looked bleak – the list is long, and in Australia we have some of the...

Former Um staffer Will Chapman is currently recovering from a successful transplant operation.
Chapman created the Gracious Gift campaign to promote the need for people to sign up to the organ donor registry while on the waiting list for a double transplant.
The campaign was amplified by Um, which orchestrated a bid to encourage media owners to donate space after sister agency McCann re-cut Chapman’s Tvc and created an accompanying online presence.
Chapman was an account executive at Um until he became too ill to work. He told Mumbrella that he would continue the campaign: “I have seen far too many of my friends in their 20′s miss out, and the solution is there.”
He added a note to the Gracious Gift Facebook page today which reads:
“A week ago today my life was saved by a beautiful organ donor and their loved ones decision to honour their wishes.

After yesterday’s announcement that sister agencies Um and McCann Worldgroup were championing former Um staffer Will Chapman’s appeal for people to register for organ donation, support from the industry has been flooding in. TV networks Seven, Nine, Ten, Sbs and Foxtel have all donated airtime to run the Tvc.
Mat Baxter, CEO, Um Australia told Mumbrella: “These are the good moments in the industry. The response has been overwhelming, everyone has been so generous with airtime and space. This is a sad and increasingly desperate situation for Will, but despite this he still has the time and energy to do something for other people.”
Australia is only 24th on the list of donor countries globally, with only 14.9 people per million of Australia’s population becoming organ donors.
New South Wales has the lowest rates in the country, at 10.9 people per million, compared with Sa at 21.1 per million.

A media agency staffer has created a campaign to raise awareness of the need for organ donation – as he himself awaits a life-saving transplant.
Will Chapman, an account executive at Um, wrote, directed and filmed the video himself. Chapman needs a double lung and heart transplant within months to survive.
The video features a number of Australian celebrities, including John Eales, Sally Fitzgibbons, Nathan Hindmarsh, Liz Ellis, Inxs’s Kirk Pengilly and actress Ada Nicodemou.
“You know how it works. You know people are dying because they aren’t receiving the gift. But you know it can change. Share this message and save a life” Chapman asks viewers in the video, which has already gained over 6,500 views on YouTube since it was uploaded on 30 June. The film was edited by WolfMoon Media.
