Today Vice Press and Bottleneck Gallery are launching a new series of limited edition Universal Monsters movie posters and art prints by British artist Greg Staples. Greg Staples is best known for his work on British comic 2000Ad and artwork for Magic the Gathering and here is what he had to say on the release:
For me the classic Universal Monster films have been engrained into me since I was a child, not only with their legendary visual design and makeup but because they are almost not of this world. To me they are the purest form of escapism and something that simply couldn’t be made in this day and age. I decided to approach these illustrations a little differently by choosing to try to add a bit of realism, hopefully to capture a small part of their character so wonderfully portrayed by Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. This really was an honour.

UK artist Greg Staples has a large body of work well-known among comic book geeks. He's best known for Judge Dredd and the illustrations he did for Wizards of the Coast. I came across his Batman vs. Joker art piece, and when I did a search I found a couple more Batman pieces. I like how Staples uses shadows to define the shape and mass of the figures. Staples seems to post new things on Facebook, and he has a few older pieces on his website.

Award winning artist Greg Staples illustrated Judge Dredd comic books throughout the ‘90s. Staples has never strayed far from the character in the years since, creating promo art for the 2012 film Dredd, and dawning the costume himself and starring as Dredd in the amazing fan-made film we posted last year, Judge Minty. For this piece that we found over on XombieDirge, Staples illustrated an older and more grizzled version of the character that is comic accurate yet bordering photorealistic.

This fan-film from Steven Sterlacchini stars Edmund Dehn as our titular hero and features real life 2000Ad comic book artist Greg Staples as Judge Dredd. The production had been making the rounds at various film festivals including The Glasgow Film Festival 2013, The Boston Science Fiction Film Festival 2013 and has forthcoming screenings at the Portland, Oregon Stumptown Comics Fest and Sci-Fi London. Most of you should know who Judge Dredd is but you may not have any clue about the old man behind the badge that reads Minty. Appearing in 6 issues of John Wagner and Mike McMahon's Judge Dredd comic book series, Minty is an aging Judge who realizes he's slowing down and will likely be gunned down by one of the many perps within the walls of Mega-City One. The twilight peacekeeper decides to take his fate into his own hands and leaves the confines of...

The Fringe is a place where non-horror genre films can get some play on Shock. These films might be sci-fi, fantasy or action - and certainly contain some horror elements - but will likely be light on scares, or, straight-up "horror." Still, they might be of interest to you.

As FM discussed earlier this week (see: Thomas Jane and Tim Bradstreet Keep it Raw), Raw Studios’ Sdcc panel was bound to be an explosive trend-bucker. Panel members included Jane, Bradstreet, artist Greg Staples, artist Jim Daily, screenwriter Jose Prendes, legendary artist and frequent FM collaborator William Stout, and–surprise!–Ron Perlman. Reportedly, they did not even speak on a stage, but walked among the attendees during the discussion, emphasizing Thomas Jane and Tim Bradstreet’s intimate approach to production and storytelling.
Then, well, this happened. And it really needs no editorial (but it does need a Content Warning for violence, vulgarity, and bone-crunching).
Who just wet their pants? You can admit it; there’s no shame. Not after that bit of brilliance.
This is what Jane had to say about the film: “I wanted to make a fan film for a character I’ve always loved and believed in...

“Does anybody have a laptop?” That’s the way Thomas Jane started off his Raw Studios panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. It seems there was some sort of technical difficulty with their initial set-up.
And as he’s known to do, Jane just rolled with it.
After securing a computer from one of the attendees, and getting all that set up, the panel was getting off to a late start. As people were still trickling in, Jane seemed to decide, “To hell with it; let’s just do this.” And the panel started. There was none of the usual formality associated with a Comic-Con panel on display here. There was no barrier between the panelists and the audience. Instead of sitting up on a stage talking into microphones, as is the Comic-Con standard, these panelists stood on the floor talking with their fans. It was an incredibly refreshing thing to see.

There’s a lot to do at Comic-Con. From panels, screenings, checking out the floor and gawking at cosplayers, it’s pretty much impossible to do even a fraction you want to. But every year, no matter what, I always make it a point to go check out the Raw Publishing booth.
It’s small, not flashy, and usually tucked away. But it’s there where Raw head honchos, Tom Jane (The Punisher, *61, Stander) and Tim Bradstreet, hang out for a good chunk of the week. Selling and signing books, interacting with fans, and generally just being cool dudes.
This year at Comic-Con I had the awesome chance to sit down and chat with Tom and Tim about their current and upcoming projects, as well as a super-secret panel that’s happening this Saturday. Check it out!
Dread:You’ve got something secret going here at Comic-Con, some kind of big top secret project.

Another day, another schedule for the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con. Next up is Day 3 - Saturday, July 14th - which is just about as chock-full of events for the horror crowd as Friday the 13th!
As always, our focus is the horror panels, but included are a few others that we think will be of interest as well. Remember that times and participants are subject to change so keep your eyes on the official Sdcc site for updates. And hopefully they'll provide a fix soon for the Sdcc smartphone app - in years past it's been extremely helpful.
10:00-11:00 Comic-Con How-To: Anatomy of a Fight Scene, Part One— Stories are about conflict, and there is no purer form of conflict than a good ol' fisticuffs-style brawl-or sword fight, laser battle, western shootout, or even two chicks pulling each other's hair. How do you put that much action down on...
