Today, Planned Parenthood powerhouse Cecile Richards is a seasoned mother of three. But before her kids were grown up, they had a lot of learning to do not only about life in general, but the cause their mom so vehemently supported.
And for her now-26-year-old son, some hilarious lessons started pretty early. “Daniel — who must’ve been maybe 5 or 6 at the time — he comes out of the house and he’s unrolled a condom,” Richards, 60, recalls in a segment for People’s Celeb Parents Get Real. “He said, ‘Hey Mom, what’s this?’ ”

When Ivanka Trump asked Cecile Richards for a private meeting earlier this year, the Planned Parenthood president’s hopes won out over her deep differences
with the White House this First Daughter represented.
“Like her father, she knew Planned Parenthood did a lot of good. I felt she was incredibly sympathetic,” Richards recalls of that early-winter sit-down over coffee. “I hoped she would use her influence and her role to speak up for women in this country. But it’s not about talk. It’s about action.”

If Peter Berg and Connie Britton couldn’t get Kyle Chandler to don Coach Taylor’s baseball cap again, how the heck did a Texas-based chain of movie theaters bring home the win?
Easy, says a very grateful John Gross, director of creative production at Alamo Drafthouse — aka the people who brought us Chandler’s Friday Night Lights-themed, silence-your-cell-phones public-service announcement: The actor, who lives in Austin, is a frequent patron of the movie-theater chain.

Anyone who delighted in seeing Jason Bourne do serious damage to a knife-wielding opponent while armed with nothing but a pen, knows how satisfying it is to watch an expert fighter work magic with mundane devices. One can savor a similar thrill tonight during the first of two episodes of “Agent Carter‘s” eight-episode run on ABC, when the determined Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) efficiently beats a villain senseless with a stapler. I should mention that she does so while wearing a platinum blonde wig and full length evening gown. What’s that famous quote from the late, great Texas governor Ann Richards about women being just as capable as men? Ah yes: “Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did. She just did it backwards, and in high heels.”

The folk music film Inside Llewyn Davis from directing duo Joel and Ethan Coen is coming later this year (read Alex's positive review from Cannes) with Oscar Isaac, Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan and more, but the brothers are already thinking about their next film. Without giving away any details, Joel said, "You always hesitate to mention these things when you are in the middle of them, because sometimes they just go in a drawer and never surface again and then people ask 'what ever happened to that thing' for the next 20 years. We are writing something right now where the main character is an opera singer." Read on! The Film Society Lincoln Center wrote about the revelation after a conversation hosted there, and pointed out that the news "caused some awkward rumbling from the audience and then an extended pause." It’s curtains for Ann, the play written by and starring Holland Taylor. The show will close June 30, ahead of its planned Sept. 1 date, after playing 19 previews and 132 regular performances, producers announced Wednesday.
Taylor was nominated for a Tony for Best Actress in a Play for her work on the show, but she lost to Cicely Tyson (The Trip to Bountiful) at Sunday’s show.
“It has been an honor to work with a truly remarkable playwright and a magnificent actress to bring Ann to Broadway and, happily in this case, they are one and the same,” said producer Bob Boyett in a release.

The only sure shot going into the 67th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday (June 9) is Neil Patrick Harris hosting for a fourth time.
"He understands Broadway and television, and Broadway and television come together one time a year," says Glenn Weiss, director and co-producer of the Tonys.
Though Harris was suspended upside down when "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" was a contender in 2012, he's not going to pull similar stunts this time.
"I never find it a successful move when an awards show host dons different ridiculous outfits," Harris tells Zap2it. "As a viewer, I never feel it is funny, and I just think it is difficult for the host. It is a lot of work for not a lot of accolades. You end up with silly pictures of yourself in the trades.

Harriet Harris has popped up on your TV screens since 1989. A serial guest star, she's perhaps best known to TV audiences for her recurring roles as Bebe Glazer on "Frasier" and Felicia Tilman on "Desperate Housewives." But to a whole different segment, she's a Tony-winning actress.
Harris, a 58-year-old native of Texas, is currently starring in "Cinderella" on Broadway as Madame, Cinderella's stepmother. She took home a Tony and a Drama Desk Award for "Thoroughly Modern Millie" in 2002. Remember the season when every other show was about race? Or the one that got dragged down with drag? Likewise, many of this spring’s Broadway offerings seem to have conspired to address an accidental theme. What does it mean, these shows implicitly ask, to be alone — in history, onstage? Not only have there been more solo plays than usual, but their casts have stretched the definition of “solo.” Ann, a one-woman show about the late Texas governor Ann Richards, also features the prerecorded voice of Julie White as her secretary. Alan Cumming’s psych-ward Macbeth includes a doctor and orderly who hover constantly and occasionally speak. Now comes the most unusual second banana of all: a 3-year-old yellow-headed vulture named Pinhead. Before the lights go down at The Testament of Mary, when the audience is invited onstage to look around, he stands tethered to a table, staring beadily as...

Lydia Cornell is a radio host, but to some of us, she was Sara Rush, the bouncy blonde daughter on Too Close for Comfort in the 1980s. She makes a powerful argument in favor of marriage equality in the name of her lesbian sister, but also in the name of Jesus.
Senator Rand Paul, for all his talk of a lack of government interference in citizens lives, really hates the idea of marriage equality. He doesn't think he can win on the federal level, so his goal is simple: rely on bigotry and fear at the state level to delay it for decades or more. Holland Taylor's one-woman Broadway show about the feisty Texas Gov. Ann Richards reminds us that life is a solo performance
Living well is the best revenge. But having that life portrayed on stage for all to see and reflect upon is almost as good.
Holland Taylor, probably best known to most of America for playing the wise-cracking mother of Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer on the CBS sitcom "Two and a Half Men" is reliving the exceedingly colorful and eventful life of former Gov. Ann Richards of Texas nightly on stage in New York City.
She’s the star and author of "Ann," a one-woman show that opened on Broadway this month to rave notices for Taylor. I caught up with the play earlier this week, a performance that also happened to be attended by former President Bill Clinton and his wife,...

Los Angeles -- For a moment, Lily Tomlin was 73 going on 40.
In the comedy "Admission," starring Tina Fey and Paul Rudd, Tomlin plays the young-at-heart seventy-something feminist mother of Fey's university admissions officer.

She’s back! And who hasn’t missed that scrappy, indefatigably optimistic Democrat with the famous hair? I don’t mean Annie, though she’s back too, warbling her millionth “Tomorrow” at the Palace. I mean Ann Richards: Texas pol, mesquite sage, world-champion Bush-skewerer. And although Richards — in the person of Holland Taylor — may not sing, she delivers something the belty orphan can’t: realpolitik laced with dirty jokes.Ann is the first of three one-woman bioplays arriving on Broadway this spring; we will soon see Bette Midler as Hollywood super-agent Sue Mengers, and Fiona Shaw as Holy Land supermom the Virgin Mary. Technically at least, Taylor, who met Richards once and wrote the part for herself in a kind of trance of respect after she died in 2006, has set herself the most difficult task of the three. For all most of us know, Mengers may have sounded just like Bette Midler,...

It takes more than a touch of goddess to pull off portraying Ann Richards.
It takes Holland Taylor.
Some roles are actor-proof, but it is impossible to imagine anyone else in this role.
Taylor had the talent and good sense to write this one-woman play about the late governor of Texas. Taylor, who plays the mom on "Two and a Half Men," stars in "Ann" at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater. The superbly done play opens Thursday (March 8).
Richards, who shot to national prominence at the 1988 Democratic National Convention, had the sort of homespun logic that endeared and earned her many a true believer.
Richards was self-made, smart, funny, hard-working and made so much sense that her stances on gun control and women's reproductive rights drew applause from the crowd. And the bulk of the play is set 20 years ago.
This opens with Richards giving a graduation speech. "I have a lot of opinions.

This year’s Best Actress in a Play race got a jolt from yesterday’s announcement that Emmy winner Holland Taylor will be coming to Broadway this spring. She will perform in a one-woman play that she wrote about late Texas Governor Ann Richards.
There are a couple of factors that bring this show into that race. First is the intended timing of its opening, which is scheduled for March 7, 2013. The next is that the show is being produced by Lincoln Center Theater, a large and powerful theater company that will definitely throw campaigning dollars behind Taylor. Third, the show is a one-woman show and is unlikely to be nominated for any other category. Considering the show is being performed on the largest stage of the most powerful theater company in New York, how could Taylor not be nominated?

I wonder what people 100 years ago used to applaud with other than their hands... The images you see here come from Peter Kobel's book "Silent movies: the birth of film and the triumph of movie culture" courtesy of Old Hollywood where the following is said of their existence: Glass slides (or lantern slides, as they were originally called) were used as pauses when reels were being worked on or changed. They were also known as "etiquette" slides because of the lighthearted instructions for patrons' behavior when viewing the show. Nowadays theaters have done their best to continue with the policy of trying to entertain while inform audiences to be quiet and courteous of those around them, but I can't help but wonder if we are getting to the point where all niceties can be thrown out the window. Perhaps as the Alamo Drafthouse has done. Take for example, this "Don't Talk...

Two And A Half Men star Holland Taylor is thrilled her new one-woman show has finally hit the stage - because the project has been six years in the making.
The 68 year old has been crafting and researching new play Ann since former Texas governor Ann Richards' passing in 2006 and Taylor confesses she often wondered if her ideas would ever come to fruition.
She tells Reuters, "I had a lot of creative feelings about her... I had to do something with my feelings about this loss... I was literally driving to work at my television show one day and I had to pull off the highway onto the service road (when I heard the news). I had the idea it should be a play because of her liveliness and her contact with the audience."
Taylor admits playing such a sharp-witted character has had its positives - it has helped her to find strength in tragic Richards' optimistic attitude.
She adds, "She was not a person who looked back. Ever. She did not revisit things. She was rolling along, like a wheel that goes under and then over. Under and over. But always moving forward. If she fell, she fell forward. And that is not the way I am. I get very upset. I can get very waylaid. I get blue. I can become chicken little. And now when I do, I think, 'What would Ann Richards think of this behaviour?'"
Ann will run through 15 January at Washington, D.C.'s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Romney showed front-runner status, while Bachmann proved she belonged on stage. Mark McKinnon on why they shone-and the rest of the debaters flopped Monday night.Plus: More Daily Beast contributors on the Gop debate
The two clear winners in the Gop debate hosted Monday night in New Hampshire were former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota. Political debates are all about expectations. Mitt Romney had more than anyone to lose. Michele Bachmann had more than anyone to gain. If the 2012 Republican field may be a circus, Sarah Palin is unquestionably its ringmaster, kicking off a bus tour next week that's much more than a publicity stunt. But Mark McKinnon says she's about to hit an immovable object.

He's a charming Southern black conservative with an American dream success story and the energy to whip crowds into a frenzy. Why the "pizza guy" could be this year's big surprise.
Herman Cain has "it." At pre-campaign appearances-part rally, part revival-he's had nonbelievers and businessmen alike leaping to their feet shouting "Amen!" And at high noon on Saturday at Centennial Park in Atlanta, this self-made American success story connected with 15,000 of his closest friends, who roared with approval throughout a stemwinder of a sermon, notably delivered without a teleprompter.
Announcing his candidacy for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, the plainspoken but passionate Tea Party firebrand taps into a growing voter frustration. His address in Atlanta touched on economic policy, foreign policy, tax policy, the role of federal government and entitlement reform, but all wrapped in beguiling Southern charm and inspirational rhetoric about "a new American dream."
Throughout his life, Herman Cain has defied expectations.
