Disney is currently shooting its latest live-action adaptation, Lilo & Stitch, down in Ohau, Hawaii. While the cast includes names like Zach Galifianakis, newcomer Maia Kealoha, and Courtney B. Vance, a number of the animated original’s voice actors are also on the island filming smaller roles. That’s now confirmed to include Jason Scott Lee, who played David Kawena in 2002’s Lilo & Stitch.
Rumors that Lee would be making an appearance in the live-action remake have been around for a few months, but the actor himself finally confirmed it during an appearance on the latest episode of the Kyle Meredith With… podcast. Following word that the voice of one of the supporting characters in Disney's planned live-action/CGI remake of Lilo & Stitch – alien creature Pleakley – has been found in Zach Galifianakis, we now know who will be playing the "Lilo" of the title. Young newcomer Maia Kealoha has scored the role.
Kealoha, who doesn't have any acting credits but has appeared in Little Miss Kona Coffee pageants, will acting alongside whoever else is cast for the human characters, and a lot of CG.
The original film, directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, followed Lilo, a lonely Hawaiian girl who forms a bond with a doglike extraterrestrial creature, whom she names Stitch. Stitch, who is engineered to cause chaos, has a change of heart as Lilo teaches Stitch the importance of "Ohana" the Hawaiian concept of family and introduces him to the music of one Elvis Presley. The Hawai’i International Film Festival (Hiff), presented by Halekulani, revealed its lineup for the 42nd edition of the annual film festival taking place from November 3 to 13 on Oahu and November 17-20 on neighbor islands, with virtual programs streaming from November 3 to 27 nationwide. The program includes 102 features, 124 shorts, and seven nominated film programs. Among the lineup are 111 Hawai‘i premieres, 69 world premieres, 14 U.S. premieres, 10 North American premieres and 7 international premieres from 37 countries.
