Liverpool are considering a club record bid for Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka, Bild are reporting.
The German newspaper claims The Reds are one of many top European clubs that are interested in the Swiss international, who could leave Die Fohlen at the end of this season after four years at Borussia-Park.
According to the report, the five-time European Cup winners are set to be charged what would be a club record £37 million for the player’s services, trumping Andy Carroll’s £35 million move back in 2011.
Jurgen Klopp will be very familiar with the work of his first transfer target at Anfield, having managed in the Bundesliga for the entirety of Xhaka’s career in Germany.

One of the biggest questions that Brendan Rodgers faced during his time at Liverpool was whether or not he was able to attract big-name players to Anfield. Through no fault of his own Rodgers hadn’t been in management long enough to develop world class allegiances and all he brought to the Reds was a distinctly average Joe Allen from his sprightly Swansea days.
New coach, Jurgen Klopp has double the amount of management experience than Rodgers and after spending six years in charge of Borussia Dortmund he has a wealth of friendships, loyalties and professional admiration among his peers. This would no doubt have been a key factor in Tom Werner and John W Henry’s decision to sack Rodgers and appoint the German manager as a coach of Klopp’s magnitude (or in fact, their second choice, Carlo Ancelotti) don’t come along very often.

Spurs suffered their first defeat of Mauricio Pochettino’s reign as boss as Liverpool ran out 3-0 winners at White Hart Lane yesterday.
Goals from Raheem Sterling, Steven Gerrard (penalty) and Alberto Moreno ensured Spurs’ unbeaten record and zero goals conceded record disappeared quite emphatically.
Spurs actually had the bulk of the possession – 60.5% compared to Liverpool’s 39.5%, in fact – but Liverpool were far more threatening on the attack, had many more attempts on goal and were clearly more clinical with their finishing.
Sterling’s goal came after eight minutes, after Daniel Sturridge did some good work on the right wing and found Jordan Henderson who squared it in to the six yard box for the England forward to tap home.
Gerrard’s penalty came after Eric Dier pulled Joe Allen’s shirt in the Spurs area. The Wales international went down very easily...

New York – The 2014-15 Broadway season is barely underway, but it already has a major casualty that seems likely to earn a place among the legendary flops whose posters adorn the walls of theater-district hangout Joe Allen. Holler If Ya Hear Me, the non-biographical rap musical set in a tough inner-city neighborhood in the industrial Midwest, will have its final performance July 20, just a month after opening. Assembled around the lyrics and poetry of murdered hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, the show began previews at the Palace Theatre on June 2, and officially opened

Two penalties from Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard helped the Reds secure a 3-0 victory at Old Trafford, their first at the ground since 2007.
Gerrard opened the scoring after 35 minutes from the spot before doubling the advantage a minute into the second-half. Gerrard missed a later penalty, which would’ve given him the first Premier League hat-trick from the penalty spot but Luis Suarez found the net late on to seal a comfortable victory.
Liverpool started the game brightly with Daniel Sturridge unleashing a forceful shot that narrowly went past the wrong side of David De Gea’s post, before Luis Suarez went down under pressure in the box and appealed for a spot-kick.
The game started to heat up with Rafael pick up a yellow card for a poor challenge and then immediately giving away a penalty as he handled the ball. The Brazilian was lucky to...

Championship club Afc Bournemouth have never beaten Liverpool in four previous attempts – all in the Fa Cup. Will their fifth ever meeting produce a giant-killing in the fourth round at Dean Court?
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers will hope to avoid such a banana skin on the eve of his 41st birthday. Cherries counterpart Eddie Howe is five years his junior, but both managers saw their own playing careers blighted by injury. Now they will be their coaching wits against one another.
Bournemouth boast a decent recent home record of just one defeat in the last two months. Nine goals have gone in during their four fixtures on their own patch since Christmas. Liverpool meanwhile have enjoyed mixed results on the road.
Defeats at Manchester City and Chelsea were sandwiched between big scoring wins away at Spurs and Stoke.

This is proving to be one of the craziest Premier League seasons in recent memory.
Top of the table on Christmas Day, Liverpool now find themselves fifth in the run-up to New Year’s Day after losing two successive games to title rivals Manchester City and Chelsea.
Their latest set-back, against Chelsea, leaves the Reds six points adrift of league leaders Arsenal and outside the top four – though manager Brendan Rodgers remains confident his side can still challenge for top spot.
Rodgers blamed his side’s recent slump on a series of injuries – both Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturrridge are out – while his side was further stretched on Sunday.
Defender Mamadou Sakho suffered a hamstring problem, Joe Allen was forced off on the hour mark and replaced by rookie Brad Smith and Jordan Henderson sustained a knock.
Rodgers admits his squad is “thin” in light of these...

Chelsea came from behind at Stamford Bridge to inflict a second festive defeat on Liverpool. Jose Mourinho triumphed over Brendan Rodgers in the battle between the Special One and his apprentice.
The visitors led through Martin Skrtel’s early opener, but Eden Hazard and Samuel Eto’o struck to ensure the hosts won it. A home win moved the Blues to two points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Chelsea were undone by a set piece with three minutes played after Eto’o caught Jordan Henderson on the knee. Luis Suarez met Philippe Coutinho’s delivery, that deflected off Branislav Ivanovic and Reds defender Skrtel snapped up the loose ball.
Simon Mignolet then saved from Eden Hazard at the other end and Slovakia centre back Skrtel almost put through his own net, but Glen Johnson cleared the danger. Hazard then went down in the Liverpool box under Lucas Leiva’s challenge,...

Liverpool and Luis Suarez, the Premier League’s top scorer, face Chelsea for the first time since the star striker picked up a ten-match ban for biting Blues defender Branislav Ivanovic in April.
Far from being billed as Jaws 2, this encounter will be a serious test of both sides’ title credentials as they sit next to one another in the top four. Chelsea have won only one of their last five meetings with the Reds at Stamford Bridge to boot.
This pits Blues boss Jose Mourinho against protégé Brendan Rodgers for the first time in Premier League history, and the Special One stirred the pot when he suggested Liverpool could become champions.

Tottenham Hotspur can move level on points with opponents Liverpool by winning at White Hart Lane on Sunday. Andre Villas Boas’s side have found their shooting boots in December after netting ten times in their last four outings.
Much-maligned Spanish striker Roberto Soldado silenced his critics by hitting a hat-trick in the midweek Europa League win over once wealthy Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala. That ensured Spurs made it a perfect six wins in the group stage.
Brendan Rodgers meanwhile takes his Reds to Tottenham knowing they have lost on each of their last five Premier League visits. There is every incentive to change that losing habit at the Lane as three points will restore the Merseysiders to second spot behind Arsenal.
Liverpool have not won an away from Anfield since the end of September, however, and have picked up just two points from the last dozen available on the road.

A superb Luis Suarez was the difference at Anfield this evening as he hit four of Liverpool’s five goals against Norwich, proving himself their tormentor once again.
The Uruguayan opened his account after 15 minutes with a brilliant 35-yard strike before adding his second on the half hour mark. He grabbed his hat-trick before the interval with another superb effort and capped it off with a majestic free-kick in the second-half.
Norwich pulled one back through Bradley Johnson but it was far too late, especially when Raheem Sterling added his name to the scoresheet later on.
In the 15th minute the Reds took the lead – the ball was taken down by Luis Suarez who saw John Ruddy off his line and hit a dipping-shot from 35-yards out, which flew into the back of the net to take the Uruguayan’s season tally into double figures.

You’d be doing well to find a Liverpool supporter out there who doesn’t have a strong opinion on midfielder Joe Allen. He is definitely one of the most divisive players currently on Liverpool’s playing roster. Some think he’s a complete waste of space and that he doesn’t supply much more than his “back and sides” nickname suggests (a nickname of poor taste I might add).
However, many fans can see beyond the cold hard statistics that many people take as gospel. The fact that the young Welshman supplies neither tonnes of goals nor bucket loads of assists means little to the cultured eye of an open minded football fan. Although I acknowledge that everyone has an opinion I will attempt to explain the reasoning behind my faith in Joe Allen, the “poster boy” of Brendan Rodgers.

One of the biggest fixtures of the Premier League season is set, and with the history between the two there is no wonder why many fans of both clubs look forward to this match the most of all 19 pairings. Liverpool are at home for this one and come into the match-up off the back of two wins in their first two, whilst Manchester United won impressively away to Swansea and followed up with a 0-0 draw against title challengers Chelsea.
Liverpool have been active in the transfer window with the signings of Kolo Toure, Aly Cissokho and Simon Mignolet amongst others.
There wasn’t much to inspire either set of spectators in this drab draw in Cardiff’s Millenium Stadium on Wednesday night, as Wales and the Republic of Ireland played out a 0-0 scoreline.
The best of the chances fell to West Brom striker Shane Long, who had 2 good chances either side of the break. Paddy Madden and Robbie Brady also had good chances for the visitors, who dominated a dreadful match. Neither side managed a shot on target in the first half; the first save of the game was made by Sunderland keeper Kieran Westwood; diving to smother a Craig Bellamy free-kick.
Wales looked frankly toothless without the talismanic Gareth Bale, who watched from the sidelines, and will not relish their final qualifying games, unless they can seriously improve their form. Ireland were on top for much of the second half, and their inability to take chances will worry their Italian manager Giovanni Trappatoni.

Liverpool are odds-on favourites for their opening game of the season against Stoke City.
During Pre-Season, Liverpool have won 6 games and have lost only once and scored 17 goals and conceding just two. Stewart Downing completed his move to West Ham early in the week for £5 million, ensuring that Liverpool must find a decent replacement. Liverpool are reportedly interested in Brazilian winger Willian, which would be a perfect addition to Liverpool’s top four hopes.
Stoke won three games out of their five, drawing once, and losing once. They scored four goals and conceding two. Stoke are interested in Mame Diouf, but were told to up their bid of £7 million, to £17 million.
Brendan Rodgers knows that nothing short of a top-four finish will do, especially as his side don’t have the demands of a European campaign after failing to qualify last season. Without the suspended and want-away Luis Suarez until late September,...

Scottish champions Celtic left Irish fans in no doubt as to which team was in form, as they grounded out a 1-0 friendly win against Premier League side Liverpool in front of 50,000 fans at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.
Amido Baldé’s 12th minute strike gave the Glaswegians the victory, the new signing calmly blasting a great effort past new Simon Mignolet. Celtic will take heart from a fantastic defensive performance, and manager Neil Lennon will be delighted with how his charges performed. It’s a very much new-look Celtic side, with a host of new signings following his sale of Victor Wanyama for a whooping £12.5 million to Southampton and Gary Hooper to Norwich for a reported £5 million.
Brendan Rodgers on the other hand, won’t be. He’s still missing Daniel Agger because of a lingering knee injury, and his absence was noticeable at Lansdowne Road, with Toure and Wisdom exposed for the goal.

Steven Gerrard has been Liverpool’s heartthrob for so many years, but at age 33 the talismanic midfielder is past his prime and has only a few seasons left in which to influence his team. As such, The Reds must find a player to replace their captain and inspirational leader and, looking at their current squad, may need to spend some serious pounds to find a player worthy of his position. In his early career, Gerrard was a prolific goalscorer taking up a position behind the front two with barnstorming runs into the box and precision free-kicks making him one of the greatest attacking midfielders of the modern generation.
In his later years and after countless missed games through injury, Gerrard has redeveloped into an excellent holding midfielder of sorts. Taking up a position behind three advanced midfielders in Brendan Rodgers 4-2-3-1 system, Gerrard has orchestrated his teams forward...

The star of Jaws and Close Encounters made another early film, but it never got the credit it was due. Its rerelease reminds us that the young actor really had something special
At 65, with the big hits well behind him and the star retinue long since dissipated, Richard Dreyfuss still burns with the righteous fire of the Hollywood player. He fixes me with a beady eye and says: "Acting is an ennobling experience and if it's something that you're capable of, you're lucky. The season is now over and the summer transfer window looms large ahead of us.
This summer is likely to be another busy one for Liverpool Football Club and the club’s manager Brendan Rodgers, which makes their transfer activity particularly interesting.
Will they finally start to sign the quality of player they need? Will they continue to build on the good signings of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho? I’m sure many of us will look on in interest at their activity this close-season. Even Spurs, Everton, Arsenal and Chelsea fans may be interested, with Liverpool showing at times that they can already challenge the best teams in the league – although the consistent lack of inconsistency means Liverpool have never really been a real threat this season.
One thing we know for sure is that all the teams around Liverpool will improve during the summer so they must also do the same.

Back to back league wins for Aston Villa have quietened the doom mongers – at least for a little while.
Once considered sure-fire relegation fodder, there are now quiet whispers of survival at Villa Park, and if Paul Lambert’s beleaguered side can replicate that famous 3-1 win at Anfield in December, they will be in with a real chance of dodging the relegation trap door.

The two bottom sides in Group A met last October at the Millenium Stadium with Wales emerging victorious thanks to a Gareth Bale double. James Morrison had earlier scored for the Scots and Steven Fletcher had a goal disallowed but like much of Craig Levein’s tenure as Scotland manager luck was not on their side.

Two teams with very different aspirations produced an interesting encounter at St. Mary’s stadium on Saturday afternoon, as Southampton brushed past an unusually laborious Liverpool.
Amidst the rain and mud that typified an English spring, it was the likes of Rickie Lambert, becoming the highest scoring Englishman in the Premier League, who felt most at home as the Saints secured a vital 3 points and gave their quest for Premier League survival a vital and timely boost.
Southampton hustled, fought and harried while Liverpool stalled, struggled and died, the Dr. Jekyll that so courageously defeated Tottenham last weekend giving way to an ugly, lumbering Mr. Hyde. All hopes of top 4 should now be put back where they were at the start of the season, while even a fifth place berth now looks unlikely for Brendan Rodger’s side.

Liverpool have Martin Skrtel available again after the defender picked up a knee injury but he will likely start on the bench, while Daniel Sturridge has recovered from a thigh injury, and will likely start, having missed the 4-0 win over Wigan. Joe Allen will probably be the man he replaces. Fabio Borini, Martin Kelly and Brad Jones are all out.
Tottenham may be without Aaron Lennon, who had to be substituted in the Europa League tie against Inter Milan with a hamstring injury. Tom Huddlestone and Clint Dempsey are also still doubts heading into this game, while long-term absentees Sandro and Younes Kaboul remain out. Good news for Spurs is that both Emmanuel Adebayor and Moussa Dembele should be fit and will travel to Anfield.

Brendan Rodgers will have a near full strength squad to pick from when his old friends visit his new home this weekend. Both Sturridge and Coutinho are widely expected to return to at least the bench after being cup tied for the recent trip to Russia in the Europa League after playing for Chelsea and Inter Milan in Europe already this season, respectively.
This squad boost will indeed be a welcome one for Br after seeing his team fall back into last season’s nightmare where nobody in a red shirt can be seen anywhere near the opposition’s six yard box – the loss of Sturridge for the West Brom and Zenit matches made it all too obvious that Liverpool still lack major fire power. Ever since the Premier League began back in 1992, Liverpool have failed to continue the dominance they had in the years previous. Whilst other teams continued to beat Liverpool to the title, fans have been left wondering when they would win their first Premier League trophy and the long awaited 19th title.
The closest the side ever came to securing the Premier League title was when former manager Rafa Benitez, now Chelsea boss, managed the side to 2nd place in the 2008/2009 season. After being runners-up to Manchester United that year, Liverpool failed to make any real impact in the league and for too long their European football has been restricted to playing in the Europa League football instead of the prestigious Champions League.

Matt Smith scored twice as a Dogged Oldham Athletic shocked seven times Fa Cup winners Liverpool at Boundary park.
Oldham started the game with the kind of passion and industry that their manager, Paul Dickov was known for in his playing days and took the lead after just 2 minutes. Some slack defending from Liverpool allowed Youssouf M’Changama to cross for Matt Smith, whose header deflected into the net off Martin Skrtel. Liverpool looked shell-shocked and unable to cope with the physical nature of Oldham’s game, as the League One strugglers continued to dictate the tempo of the game.

The 2012/13 Premier League season has been a topsy-turvy adventure and as expected, the teams from Manchester are in pole position yet again, with the hope of being crowned champions come May. Last season was epic in every proportion and the way the league was won was like a classic Hollywood movie.
A lot of business was conducted in the summer with the Big Boys of the league grabbing all the headlines for the star signings that in all fairness, have been worth every penny spent.
The defending champions, Manchester City, spent wads of cash bringing in the likes of Javi Garcia, Scott Sinclair, Maicon and Jack Rodwell while their fierce rivals, Manchester United, stole the headlines for the captures of Japanese sensation, Shinji Kagawa and Arsenal’s talisman, Robin van Persie.

When Ryan Bennett deflected Raheem Sterling’s cross into his own net, Liverpool notched their fifth goal of the game against Chris Hughton’s admirable but ultimately outclassed Norwich City. Not only this, at that point Liverpool registered their 40th league goal of the campaign. Last season the Reds didn’t hit that mark until the 33rd game, specifically Andy Carroll’s injury time winner against Blackburn in that wacky 3-2 epic at Ewood Park. Last Saturday’s fixture against the Canaries was, in contrast, only the 23rd game. Further than this, last season Liverpool only scored three or more goals on seven separate occasions in the league. Again, that mark was equaled at the weekend.
At the other end of the park, a defence many claim is performing worse this season have registered 9 clean sheets so far. In 2011/2012, after the full 38-game campaign was said and done, only 11 clean sheets had been recorded.

What would you like to drink?” asks Benjamin Walker. We’ve only just sat down at theater-district bar Joe Allen, and I tell him I haven’t yet thought that far ahead, to my liquor order. “How is that far ahead? That’s where I start!” he says with a deep, welcoming Georgia growl that he claims to have had beaten out of him years ago at Juilliard, but which returns whenever he’s being charming, which seems to be all the time. “I think it’d be an insult to Tennessee Williams if I didn’t get a bourbon.”Walker is perhaps still a little in character, having come straight from the Richard Rodgers Theatre, where he spent the evening battling ankle injury, sexual confusion, and alcoholism as Brick, the good ol’ boy husband to Scarlett Johansson’s Maggie in Williams’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Liverpool, now six months into the Brendan Rodgers revolution, are currently marooned in mid-table; over-reliant on one fit striker, an eighteen year old and their increasingly aging captain.
But thankfully for Liverpool supporters, form is improving and the Reds seem to be slowly climbing the table. And now, with January just around the corner, life could be getting even better.

We all know Liverpool Fc aren’t the football club that they used to be. Constant failure in the Premier League and a gradual decline from European competition shows how much of a decline has happened. Liverpool may need to re-shape their entire squad come January but this is a list of 10 players that manager Brendan Rodgers must sign in order for the club to challenge in one competition or another. The interesting thing about Liverpool is that it is the attacking areas which need improvement as players like Stewart Downing simply haven’t delivered. It’s obvious that Brendan Rodgers wants to play attacking and attractive football, therefore higher quality players are needed if he wants to seriously succeed at a club which was once considered as one of the greatest, and is unfortunately on a very slippy slope.

After suffering a heavy setback last week against Aston Villa, Liverpool will hope to get back to winning ways this weekend, while Fulham could potentially leap above their hosts with a victory of their own.
With three wins in their last five league games, things didn’t look quite so bleak for Liverpool, but after being just four points from the coveted 4th place, the loss at Anfield last time out brought home the reality to the fans, that this team still isn’t there yet.

Is Brendan Rodgers about to boost his midfield options with a move for an Anderlecht wonderkid?

This season, Praet has built on those appearances, starting five times so far and scoring his first senior goal in the Champions League qualifying match against Ekranas – and according to talkSPORT, attracting the attentions of “several European clubs,” including Liverpool, who they say are leading the chase for the midfielder that the report values at £4m.

If he isn’t a star now, he’ll certainly be one within the year,” Ed Asner jokes of his current co-star Michael Shannon. “And Paul Rudd? Brilliant guy.” The two of them are still at the theater, hammering things out, or just possibly too pooped to tag along. Meanwhile he, Ed Asner, 82 years old, sits at the “Al Pacino table” at Joe Allen over eggs and lox and a double vodka as midnight approaches. Can these younger men keep up? No, they cannot. But, he tells me proudly, it’s by design: “When I come up against a strong actor, it’s the biggest fucking goad to get me to start running double-time, just so he doesn’t pass me up.”It’s a strategy that’s worked throughout his six-decade career, during which he’s won seven Emmys and five Golden Globes as a larger-than-life, frequently scene-stealing performer.
