The challenge of crafting great science fiction lies in the balance of a compelling narrative and thorough worldbuilding. When you’re embracing the task of creating a new world every facet of it needs to be thought through, otherwise your idea can crumble at the first hurdle. This all-encompassing approach is key to Tomas Kamphuis’ ambitious and detailed sci-fi fashion short Exiles. Made in collaboration with Hamcus and Adidas, Kamphuis’ film relishes every element of its story. From the inventive costuming through to the gorgeous, dusty visuals you can tell each part of this film has been deliberated over with great intent. Now, with the film recently arriving online, Dn speaks with Kamphuis for an extensive conversation about the making of his short, the location-based challenges that arose during the shoot, and the visual language he employed to emphasise the film’s narrative and its fashion.

Hallmark has canceled Ride, its Yellowstone-like drama about a bucolic but cash-strapped ranch that’s operated by a widowed parent who loses a beloved family member.
The drama starred Nancy Travis as matriarch Isabel Murray and Beau Mirchoff (Good Trouble), Jake Foy (Designated Survivor) and Marcus Rosner (Arrow) as her sons Cash, Tuff and Austin. Tiera Skovbye plays Austin’s wife, Missy. The first season launched in March.
Sherri Cooper-Landsman served as showrunner on the new drama about a rodeo dynasty with Rebecca Boss and Chris Masi (Our Kind of People). It was shot in Canada.

Deadline asked Cooper-Landsman about the drama’s inevitable comparisons to Yellowstone.

Ride was one of two new scripted series to premiere on Hallmark in 2023. (The other is the time-travel drama The Way Home.) It debuted in March 2023; the season finale aired in May.
In contrast to The Way Home, which Hallmark renewed mid-way through its first season, Ride languished in limbo after its dramatic season 1 finale. Now, Vulture reports that the network has quietly decided not to move forward with Ride Season 2.
As recently as two weeks ago, some of the Ride cast appeared to be holding out hope for a renewal. When a fan commented on Instagram in early November that she was looking forward to season 2, Jake Foy,...

Hallmark’s new family drama finished its first season run, and it was a season full of ups and downs.
Ride Season 1 delivered dramatic television due to emotional storylines, character arcs, and dynamic relationships.
While the series quickly became a favorite, it still had some flaws, and in our report card, we examine some of its strengths and how it can improve if it gets a Season 2.
Best Episode: Ride Season 1 Episode 9, "Truths Laid Bare"
While several episodes showcased the theme of family and unconditional love, none featured it better than “Truths Laid Bare.”
After her mom died, Valeria felt unsafe at home, and Isabel and the rest of the McMurrays provided her with a safety net.
Learning the truth about Valeria was just the beginning.
The McMurrays were shocked to learn that Austin had a gambling problem and that Tucker blackmailed him into throwing races right before he died.

Most of the McMurrays conquered their dreams, but just as victories were won, they had to deal with more unwanted news.
Cash finally achieved his dreams on Ride Season 1 Episode 10, so Missy and Tuff thought they could go after theirs for a while. However, some unexpected visitors and news may alter the family forever.
Let's discuss how to road to Cheyenne changed the McMurrays.
History felt like it was repeating itself since Tucker was taunting and threatening Cash as he did before Austin's last ride.
If anything, I deserve a thank you. If it were to get out that the great Austin McMurray cheated at the sport he loved, it might taint the whole family.

Isabel was so scared of Cash's self-destructive behavior and mindset that she decided to leave him in jail.

Jake Foy plays the charming and dependable Tuff McMurray on Hallmark's Ride. He plays a sexy cowboy and the co-foreman of McMurray Ranch. He's the glue of the family, and he's often the family member protecting others.
Tuff has spent so much time helping his mom save the ranch and helping Cash and Valeria that he hasn't devoted enough time to his singing career or his blossoming relationship with his new boyfriend, Julian.
TV Fanatic with Jake about Tuff's personal dreams, how Tuff was coping with the family drama, and some teasers for the finale and a potential Season 2. Check it out below:
Hi Jake. Tuff has become one of our favorite characters on Ride. What have been some of your favorite moments of the series?
I love it whenever we're taking the dirt road relics on stage in the show. It means that everybody is together on those days.

Ride continually shows that a family's love is unconditional, and on Ride Season 1 Episode 9, when Valeria confessed everything about her past, the McMurrays still accepted her, unlike her father and his wife.
Valeria had been running for so long and had difficulty trusting anyone.
Even though Austin was the oldest McMurray sibling, he doubted his family's love too and also got into deep trouble, and he only trusted Valeria to help him.
After Grace Booker recognized her, Valeria knew she only had a limited time before her father found her. Even though Valeria usually acts strong, she's still afraid of her father.
Something about her father made her feel like a scared teenager again.
Valeria felt like she lost everything when her mom died. Her dad couldn't wait to ship her off to a farm school instead of helping her grieve her mother.
Teenagers should feel safe and secure, not...

Weddings always bring drama, and Laura Booker's wedding brought plenty and shifted several relationships.
The Booker family showed how damaging their family expectations were on Ride Season 1 Episode 8 when their daughter canceled her wedding because she was only getting married to please her parents.
Laura wanted to provide stability for Sophie without all the hidden expectations. It was so obvious that she wanted the perfect wedding to please her mother.
The McMurrays had hoped that planning a big-name wedding for the Bookers would help their business. Unfortunately, after this fiasco, they were in worse shape than before.
They may have lost their investor, Missy lost her boyfriend, and Grace Booker recognized Valeria from her past. It was trouble all around.
It's difficult to live up to family expectations. All Gus's parents seemed to care about was money and image. They loved their daughter and wanted her and Sophie to be financially secure,...

Austin cheated, but not the way Missy suspected.
Missy suspected Austin cheated on her and tried to meet the mysterious woman to get answers on Ride Season 1 Episode 6. They weren't the answers she expected, and they could alter everything for the McMurrays.
Meanwhile, Isobel and Hank appealed to Daniel Booker, Gus's dad, to fund their new rodeo stadium.
Missy seemed shaken up after seeing Polly Kern at the Frontier BBQ on Ride Season 1 Episode 5. Since it only just occurred, hearing her repeat the story to everyone in the family felt repetitive.
Things got worse when Missy learned that Gus and Cash got into an old-school brawl. She thought Cash kept secrets from her, too, and wondered if she could trust any of the McMurray men.
Missy: Did you get into a fight with Gus?
Tuff: Really?
Valeria: Busted!
Cash: You’ve had a lot on your mind

It's challenging to follow your dreams when life gets in the way, and Ride Season 1 Episode 5 showed how these resilient women kept going.
Both Isobel and Missy have had to live up to the McMurray legend since they married fantastic bull riders, but they're trying to survive and prove they are successful on their own too.
"When It Rains" showed how strong these two leading leadings were.
Isobel's pride and joy is McMurray Ranch. She has done everything to save it, and she panicked when a bad storm could destroy the hay and the horses.
She used to have bigger dreams, but those died when both her husband and Austin died of bull riding accidents. Now, all Isobel cared about was keeping Cash safe and the ranch afloat.

The McMurrays and their friends strived to redefine themselves in Ride Season 1 Episode 4, especially the three lead women.
One of the reasons this series works is all three of them -- Isobel, Missy, and Valeria -- are strong and independent and don't want to be defined by relationships or their pasts.
Let's begin with Isobel, our strong matriarch, who wouldn't let anyone tell her what to do.
Isobel runs everything at the ranch, and she does not stop to think about herself. Out of her children, Tuff was the one that noticed that she was pulling all-nighters dealing with a pregnant horse.
As the baby of the family and the ranch foreman, he seemed most in tune with his mom's responsibilities and moods.
While Valeria was the one to suggest throwing Isobel a party, everyone wanted to honor the woman who gave so much to them.
She’s always celebrated everyone else.

Isobel McMurray is a strong matriarch who never likes to break down. She can do it all and refuses to let anyone tell her any differently.
It is Isobel’s birthday on Ride Season 1 Episode 4, but Isobel refuses to leave the barn because her favorite horse is about to give birth.
That was just the beginning of the drama that occurs on McMurray Ranch.
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive sneak peek at Sunday’s episode, and we’re thrilled to share it with you.
Besides Isobel showing some vulnerability, the hour also showed some character insights into Gus, his family history, and Valeria’s personal secrets.
The episode synopsis teases that Missy and Gus become closer when he brings his niece, Sophie, to the ranch.
Tyler Jacob Moore(Gus) and Tiera Skovbye (Missy) work seamlessly together with Isla Spencer, who plays Sophie.

Within minutes, the McMurrays cemented a place in our hearts, and hopefully, we'll be watching them for several seasons.
During Ride Season 1 Episode 1, the McMurrays banded together to try and save the family ranch.
They also showed that family wasn't always just by blood, and sometimes you were blessed to find another family.
Many long-running family dramas have ended recently, including This Is Us, Good Witch, and Chesapeake Shores. Ride elevates the family loyalty from Chesapeake Shores and adds sizzling chemistry from the two leads.
The multi-talented cast adds to the magic of the series, particularly the McMurray family. Nancy Travis is a well-respected actress known for many projects, especially ABC's Last Man standing. She plays the matriarch, Isobel McMurray.
Tiera Skovbye, who portrays Missy McMurray, is most well-known for playing Grace Knight in the Canadian medical series Nurses and Polly Cooper on Riverdale.

It looks like Hallmark Channel is trying to catch some of that Yellowstone fever with the series premiere of its new rodeo family drama Ride.
Sunday’s debut introduces viewers to the McMurrays, an almost dynastic rodeo family who runs a small-town ranch in Colorado. Mom Isabel (Last Man Standing‘s Nancy Travis) leads the brood following the death of her husband. She has three sons: the eldest, Austin (When Calls the Heart‘s Marcus Rosner), follows in his father’s footsteps as a well-known rodeo champion, with the help of his out-and-proud brother Tuff (Hallmark movie vet Jake Foy...

Spoiler Alert! This story reveals plot point from the March 26 series premiere of Ride on Hallmark.
It takes place on a bucolic but cash-strapped ranch that’s operated by a widowed parent who loses a beloved family member in the premiere episode — all while everyone looks straight-up sexy in their Wranglers and cowboy boots.
But that’s where the similarities to Yellowstone end for Hallmark’s Ride, insists Sherri Cooper-Landsman, who showruns the new drama about a rodeo dynasty with Rebecca Boss and Chris Masi (Our Kind of People).
“For me, it was just this beautiful ranch setting with a family going through stuff that a family goes through,” Cooper-Landsman tells Deadline of Ride. “And to be honest, I hadn’t even watched Yellowstone, so I did not even think about that. It just was this beautiful setting and a worlds that Becky [Rebecca] really knew so well.
