At the very end of Sweet Country, director Warwick Thornton’s stunning, somber outback western, an emotionally devastated cattle rancher played by the great Sam Neill offers two questions to the clouds: “What chance have we got? What chance has this country got?” It’s the sorrowful capper to a powerfully upsetting film. And it’s entirely fitting. Sweet Country is many things — a stark western, a gripping chase story, a tale of slavery and self-defense, and a searing drama in which the stakes are horrifically high.
Set in Australia’s Northern Territory in the late 1920s, the film is anchored by Hamilton Morris, a non-professional actor who gives a simple, tremendously engaging performance. Morris plays Sam Kelly, an aboriginal stockman who works for Neill’s Fred Smith. The latter is a vocal Christian and one of the few onscreen whites who does not openly discriminate. Thus he is the...

"Why did you run, Mr. Kelly?" Samuel Goldwyn has unveiled an official Us trailer for an Australian racism drama titled Sweet Country, from acclaimed director Warwick Thornton (of Samson & Delilah). This first premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year, and played at the Toronto and London Film Festivals. It also plays at the Sundance Film Festival this month hitting pretty much every big fest. Sweet Country takes place in the Northern Territory of Australia nearly 100 years ago, telling the story of an Aboriginal stockman who shoots a white man and is taken to trial. Hamilton Morris stars, with Sam Neill, Ewen Leslie, Bryan Brown, Thomas M. Wright, and Matt Day. I saw this already in Venice and I liked it, but it's not my cup of tea - way too dry and slow for me. But other critics seem to be loving it, so it may still be worth your time.

Sometimes deadlines get the best of us, and if we had a second crack at The Best Films Of 2018…We’ve Already Seen, “Sweet Country” would’ve certainly made the cut. The new film from Warwick Thornton picked up a slew of awards at film festivals throughout the past year, and we highly recommend this western, which crackles with racial tension.
Starring Sam Niell, Bryan Brown, Hamilton Morris, and Ewen Leslie, the film heads to Australia’s Northern Territory, where an Aboriginal man goes on the run after killing a white man.
