B.J. knows full well that once his two only friends leave, he will soon be stranded alone in this podunk cotton town with one career option: cotton. When the three friends return home from their weekend excursion, Giff (Mark Pellegrino) is in the midst of a violent rampage, attempting to track down the stolen money. After another fateful decision is made, B.J., Sue and Bobby find themselves dangerously indebted to Giff. They are left with only one foreseeable option, to steal from Giff's money-laundering boss, Big Red (William Devane). As you can probably guess, that option does not work out very well for them. Drenched in pulpy undercurrents, Bad Turn Worse is a gritty neo-noir that is propelled by the life-altering decisions made by the three young protagonists. While subtly touching upon economic and intellectual disparity, the Hawkins brothers -- following the lead of screenwriter Dutch Southern --...

Taking a strong and unwavering stance on an important issue, no matter what challenges you’re forced to endure as a result, is a crucial moment that powerfully defines your character and the rest of your life. Brothers Zeke and Simon Hawkins made such a critical decision when they rightfully decided to co-helm their first feature film together, the crime thriller ‘Bad Turn Worse,’ which is now playing in theaters and On Demand. The coming-of-age drama, which marks the feature film writing debut of scribe Dutch Southern, enthralling chronicles the life-altering decisions three young friends must make when they inadvertently find themselves involved in a crime. The story also entrancingly emphasizes [ Read More ]

In movies, small towns are too often populated with inbred, murderous hillbillies, but there’s nevertheless a wealth of interesting, seldom-explored and considerably more believable stories to tell about them. “Bad Turn Worse” offers audiences little that they haven’t seen in one form or another — small-town kids, dreams of escape and the interference of local criminals — but in the hands of screenwriter Dutch Southern and directors Simon and Zeke Hawkins, its familiar components come together in a unique way. A crime thriller rich with emotional resonance, “Bad Turn Worse” offers the kind of clean, elegant storytelling whose emotional impact eclipses the cosmetic horrors of its counterparts while announcing the arrival of considerable new filmmaking talents. Jeremy Allen White (“Afterschool”) plays Bobby, a recent high school graduate who is set to head off to the same college as his best friend B.J.’s (Logan Huffman) girlfriend Sue (Mackenzie Davis). B.

Whenever anyone mentions Bad Turn Worse in the future, I’ll fondly think back on one of my new favorite heist explanation scenes, so cleverly orchestrated by brothers Simon and Zeke Hawkins. Blending the frantic nature of a first-person-shooter with cheeky criminal comedy, three juvenile robbers run though their illegal blueprints in real time, imagining exactly how the break-in should go down. While that might sound a bit oversimplified, the Hawkins brothers inject a little fun by having the two characters on camera react to any hiccups in the plan mid-scene, interrupting a hold-up with hypothetical questions only to direct their attention back towards elderly hostages after bickering about small details. The sequence is flashy, exciting, clever and memorable, striking a unique high note – a note that’s sorely missed throughout the film’s more generic existence.

The Texas-set neo-noir formerly known as We Gotta Get Out Of This Place has ponied up its first trailer as Starz Digital ramps up for a November 14 release. Jeremy Allen White (Shameless), Mackenzie Davis (Halt And Catch Fire) and Logan Huffman (V) star in Bad Turn Worse as small-town youngsters who blow stolen cash on a weekend of partying. Unfortunately, the sociopath they stole from (Lost‘s Mark Pellegrino) answers to an even scarier boss (William Devane), whose riches the kids are forced to heist in order to repay their debt.

The Brothers Hawkins have arrived on the scene with a loud bang that could be seen as an ode to a favourite weapon of choice in the crime genre. Now as their feature directorial debut, We Gotta Get Out of This Place, makes its way into UK cinemas, HeyUGuys had the opportunity to lightly interrogate the filmmaking duo, as they shared with us their thoughts on the creative process and the first film in their directorial canon.
Why a career in filmmaking? Was there that one inspirational moment?
Zeke Hawkins: We grew up at the movies. Whilst our parents were trying to deal with having two boys, we would go to the cinema four times a week throughout our childhood. So we have always loved movies. In terms of a seminal moment, I remember when I was eighteen and I first saw Steven Soderbegh’s Out of Sight. It...

William Devane Respects The Text

Few actors ruled the big and small screen with such vigor during the 1970s as William Devane. Using his classically handsome Irish features to embody parts best described as “Ivy League menace,” Devane hasn’t stopped working since making his film debut in 1967. McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Missiles of October, Marathon Man, Family Plot, Rolling Thunder, Yanks and Testament are just a few of the classic titles to which Devane brought his unique brand of charisma. The ‘80s saw him dominating the airwaves on the primetime soap Knots Landing as the nefarious Gregory Sumner, with dozens more memorable turns to follow.
Devane lends his gravitas to the new indie thriller We Gotta Get Out of This Place, a nifty neo-noir about a group of Texas teens (Mackenzie Davis, Logan Huffman, Jeremy Allen White) from a dead-end town who find themselves over their...

Generally Fantastic Fest programming is heavily centered around films from around the world, so it was great to see Texas production We Gotta Get Out of This Place on the slate of premieres at this year's festival. Directors Simon and Zeke Hawkins (seen above) may be La filmmakers, but this thrilling drama set in the rural outskirts of Corpus Christi is firmly rooted in Texas.
Producer Justin X. Duprie is from the small town of Taft, Texas, where primary production of the film took place. Duprie had described his hometown to writer Dutch Southern, who was inspired to write the screenplay for We Gotta Get Out of This Place.

We Gotta Get Out of This Place was shot in Taft and Corpus Christi, Texas, during winter months where endless dead cotton fields perfectly represent the inescapable bleak feelings suffered by small-town high-school students on the cusp of starting new adult lives. Playing something like a more mature version of Something Wicked This Way Comes minus the supernatural element, writer Dutch Southern's screenplay inserts a maliciously scheming petty criminal father-figure into a teenage love triangle, with deadly results.
Mark Pellegrino (Dexter, Lost) has a career packed with dark roles, but Giff is a unique character. The rural mafia boss is uneducated but possesses a devastating crafty intelligence. Perhaps slightly insane, he is predatory, with a charming, even seductive personality that reveals his vicious intent with the punchline of his never-ending one liners. He employs teens B.J. (Logan Huffman) and Bobby (Jeremy Allen White), whom he coerces into working...

We Gotta Get Out of This Place
Written by Dutch Southern

USA, 2013
The crime thriller is not an easy genre to tackle. The cinematic landscape is littered with movies that were unable to illustrate stakes worth caring about, characters worth emotionally investing in, or stories worth following. Good additions to the genre, however, are always fascinating to watch, as they show a side of things that very few people see otherwise, and put people in situations that reveal a lot about them. One of the movies premiering at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival is We Gotta Get Out of This Place, the feature film debut of directors Simon and Zeke Hawkins, and it stands as a worthy addition to the genre, adding its own flavour to stand out from the others while still paying attention to the story.
A major highlight are the performances.

If producer Adi Shankar really intends on making an action movie that brings together all of the toughest females in the industry, eventually he’s going to have to come up with a better title for it than Adi Shankar’s Female Expendables Project, but for now that seems to be all we have to work with, so we shall do our best. Anyway, what are the details of this project? So far Shankar is said to have a script from writer Dutch Southern, casting confirmations from Mma athlete-turned-actress Gina Carano and Battlestar Galactica vet Katee Sackhoff, and now another signed deal with an up and coming actress who turned quite a few heads in theaters just this weekend. If one female-driven riff on Lionsgate's The Expendables franchise wasn't enough, Deadline reports that another is in the works. Millennium Films, the company behind The Expendables and The Expendables 2 is now working on their own spinoff, to be titled ExpendaBelles . They've brought aboard Legally Blonde screenwriters McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith to provide the screenplay. The rival project , being developed by 1984 Private Defense Contractors, is still without a title but Gina Carano and Katee Sackhoff have already joined the cast. Dutch Southern is providing the screenplay for that project. ExpendaBelles will be produced by Mark Gill, Julie Kroll, Avi Lerner, Heidi Jo Markel. Trevor Short will executive produce.

The much-discussed female version of The Expendables just got way fracking cooler with today’s news that Battlestar Galatica vet Katee Sackhoff is joining the cast. The actress, best known for playing Captain Kara “Starbuck” Thrace on the wildly popular sci-fi series, will join Mma fighter Gina Carano in the upcoming feature. Adi Shankar will produce the estrogen-laced action flick, based on a Dutch Southern script. Shankar is pleased with getting Sackhoff signed to the project, telling Variety “If you spend five minutes with Katee it becomes blatantly obvious that she would pwn (sic) most male action stars.” We’re not entirely sure we buy that – but we have enjoyed Sackhoff’s work on Galactica and are excited she’s now...

So that all-female style "The Expendables" is actually becoming a thing. Last month, Gina Carano was the first name on board the movie, and now another actress has joined her, bringing some geek cred to the production. Captain Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace from "Battlestar Galactica" -- known on her driver's license as Katee Sackhoff -- has come aboard the still untitled movie. Details about the movie are still being kept tightly guarded, and all we know is that Dutch Southern is writing the script. But Adi Shankar of production company 1984 Private Defense Contractors is certainly excited about the whole thing saying, "If you spend five minutes with Katee it becomes blatantly obvious that she would pwn most male action stars." Yes, he used the word pwn. Still no word yet on when exactly this will roll, but the continued buzz around the movie is that "several prominent actresses affiliated with the action genre" are.

The untitled, all-female version of The Expendables is shaping up, with Battlestar Galactica star Katee Sackhoff joining the cast.
The cast already includes Gina Carano, and other potential names like Michelle Rodriguez and Milla Jovovich.
Adi Shankar (1984 Private Defense Contractors) produces, and Dutch Southern (Hoof Harrington’s Greatest Hits) will write the script.
Shankar says:
“If you spend five minutes with Katee it becomes blatantly obvious that she would pwn (sic) most male action stars.”

Make that two Expendables. The, er, female version. With “Haywire” and former Mma star Gina Carano already set to front his all-female version of “The Expendables”, producer Adi Shankar has now added “Battlestar Galactica” alum Katee Sackhoff to the action pic. As with Carano’s role, there is no word on who Sackhoff will be playing, or even the plot of the film, but if it’s anything like the male version, the “plot” is probably just an excuse to get all these ladies together to kick ass. Which, let’s face it, is good enough. Shankar came up with the idea after “The Expendables” sequel opened big, but has since petered out. I guess that didn’t deter him any, and the producer and his 1984 Private Defense Contractors continues to move full-steam ahead with the project, having previously tapped Dutch Southern to bang out a script. Besides “Battlestar Galactica...

From indie production house 1984 Private Defense Contractors comes an action-packed project exclusively featuring a cast of hard-hitting female stars that is slated to begin production next year. The film hopes to combine the recent lucrative insurgence of female-led action films like The Hunger Games, Snow White and the Huntsman and Haywire with the testosterone-fueled Expendables film franchise. Dutch Southern -- who worked with 1984 Private Defense Contractors recently when the company bought his spec script Hoof Harrington's Greatest Hits -- has been hired to pen the screenplay. Gina Carano, former Mixed Marital Arts competitor and star of Steven Soderberg's Haywire, has signed on to lead the cast. It's now been revealed that Battlestar Galactica alum Katee Sackhoff has joined the...

Katee Sackhoff, best known as hotshot pilot Kara ‘Starbuck’ Thrace in Battlestar Galactica is officially the second name to sign on for untitled female take on Lionsgate’s The Expendables franchise.
Sackhoff has agreed to join former Mma fighter Gina Carano in the estrogen-powered Expendables riff that 1984 Private Defense Contractors is producing.
Dutch Southern (2007 Black List script Hoof Harrington’s Greatest Hits) was tapped to write the all-female actioner back in August. Director has not yet been hired, but several prominent actresses affiliated with the action genre continue to circle the project: Angelina Jolie, Cameron Diaz, Milla Jovovich, Helen Mirren and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Producer Adi Shankar said:
If you spend five minutes with Katee it becomes blatantly obvious that she would pwn (sic) most male action stars.
Sackhoff is currently shooting the horror movie Oculus that already has cast Dr Who sidekick Karen Gillan with Brenton Thwaites and Rory Cochrane.

Katee Sackhoff is now the second actress confirmed for the film being dubbed as the female version of The Expendables. Sackhoff, known for her role as Kara “Starbuck” Thrace in Battlestar Galactica will join Gina Carano, star of Steven Soderbergh’s brainy actioner, Haywire, in the film.
Producer Adi Shankar, who will finance the film through his 1984 Private Defense Contractors moniker, said of Sackhoff’s casting: “If you spend five minutes with Katee it becomes blatantly obvious that she would pwn [sic] most male action stars.”
With a statement that broad it leaves one to wonder if that means we’ll witness Sackhoff grabbing her balls and walking away calmly from big explosions.
Today’s casting news was announced by Variety who added that “several prominent actresses affiliated with the action genre continue to circle the project,” which suggests that no matter how much audiences may want to see Meryl Streep holster heat and don fatigues,...

Battlestar Galactica actress Katee Sackhoff becomes the second member of the female Expendables movie being written by Dutch Southern. Sackhoff joins Gina Carano, who signed on last week. While there is no director in place for the film, it's pretty clear that this thing is happening whether you like it or not. Sackhoff is best known for playing Starbuck on the recent version of Battlestar Galactica and appeared on 24, Bionic Woman and Nip/Tuck. Variety broke the news which includes a quote from producer Adi Shankar. "If you spend five minutes with Katee, it becomes blatantly obvious that she would pwn (sic) most male action stars." According to Variety, "several prominent actresses affiliated with the action genre continue to circle the project," so...

Katee Sackhoff, best known for playing hardcore fighter pilot Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace on Battlestar Galactica, has become the second actress to sign up for a role in the upcoming film that has been described as the female version of The Expendables. She joins a cast that already includes Gina Carano, who showed her cinematic ass-kicking skills this past January in Steven Soderbergh's Haywire. Variety has the casting news and says that there are still "several prominent actresses affiliated with the action genre continue to circle the project." Adi Shankar is producing the film through his 1984 Private Defense Contractors banner and will finance the film itself. Said Shankar in a statement about Sackhoff's casting, "If you spend five minutes with Katee it becomes blatantly obvious that she would pwn [sic] most male action stars." Long-running horror franchise The Mummy is to be unwrapped yet again, this time with Len Wiseman reopening the cursed tomb of ancient Egyptian adventure.
Deadline reports that Wiseman is in talks to direct a reboot of The Mummy for Universal Pictures.
The filmmaker is no stranger to supernatural fantasy, having directed the first two Underworld movies and produced the next two instalments. He also directed Die Hard 4 and, most recently, a remake of Total Recall.
Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts is to script The Mummy reboot for a possible release in summer 2014.
Earlier this year it emerged that writer/producer duo Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Cowboys & Aliens, Fringe) had been hired by Universal to develop new versions of The Mummy and Van Helsing, and this is the first sign of further movement on the plans.
Wiseman says the reboot will be set in the present day, adding "It's...

Former Mma fighter, fitness model and Haywire star Gina Carano has been cast as the first female Expendable, Variety reports. The untitled project is being written by Dutch Southern and produced by Adi Shankar's 1984 Private Defense Contractors (The Grey, Killing Them Softly). Carano will be appearing in the sixth installment of Fast and Furious and the Taken-esque In the Blood directed by John Stockwell. She's certainly got the presence and power to pull off the...

Now that Adi Shankar has engaged Dutch Southern to pen a female version of Millennium Films' "The Expendables," we can't help but wonder who they'll cast. So far, "Haywire" martial arts star Gina Carano is on board. She's 30. Sounds like a great idea. There's just one tiny problem. In what universe will Hollywood produce a film about a bunch of aging female action-stars with a median age of 57? Most men, when presented with the concept of kick-ass women in action, can't help but think in terms of babes like 34-year-old Michelle Rodriguez. But the whole "Expendables" idea is about casting older--yes, senior--established action stars in an ensemble. It's about reminding us they can Still kick butt. Consider the age of the main players in "Expendables" 1 and 2: Chuck Norris: 72; Sylvester Stallone: 66; Arnold Schwarzenegger: 65. Mickey Rourke: 59; Bruce Willis: 57; Dolph Lundgren: 54 and Jean-Claude Van...

Carano, who made her Hollywood debut in Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire, is the first actress to sign on to the movie. “I don’t know how I’m supposed to make a movie that is supposed to be the female version of The Expendables without Gina Carano in it,” producer Adi Shankar told Variety. “It would be like making Twix without caramel or Jamba Juice without jamba.
