HBO’s anthology series “True Detective” is back after five years with a new season that will compete at the 2024 Emmy Awards. This latest installment that premiered in January comes with the subtitle “True Detective: Night Country” and, while still part of the franchise, it’s the first to not have the involvement of creator Nic Pizzolato – other than his executive producer credit. It was instead developed by Issa Lopez who wrote (or co-wrote) and directed all six episodes, and stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives in an Alaskan town investigating the disappearance of eight scientists. Let’s re-examine the three previous seasons of “True Detective” at the Emmys – which garnered a combined total of 22 nominations and five wins – to determine possible nominations in categories for the current season.
Here is the complete Emmys history for the first three seasons of “True Detective”:

When HBO announced True Detective would return for a fourth season, headlined by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, it was hard to tell whether the new season would be a hit.
Despite a stellar freshman season, the two seasons that came after were less than spectacular, leading to speculation that the franchise wouldn’t get another chance on the premium cabler.
Thankfully, switching things up paid off — big time. Issa Lopez took over from original creator Nic Pizzolatto to craft a stellar fourth entry titled “True Detective: Night Country,” which became the biggest season yet.
Given the story’s open-ended nature and HBO’s quick renewal for Season 5, there were some big questions about the next entry, including whether there would be any holdover cast members.
Foster turned in a captivating performance as Chief Liz Danvers, but sadly, that will be her first and only season on the anthology hit.

True Detective Season 4 director Issa Lopez reassured fans about what happened to Navarro in the season's ending moments on HBO.
At the end of True Detective Season 4, fans saw Kali Reis' Evangeline Navarro walk out into a vast open plot of ice with her house emptied as Jodie Foster's Liz Danvers closed the case centered on the eight murdered research scientists.
She would later tell her superiors that she did not believe they would find Navarro on the ice before viewers saw the two reunite for one final moment. The real mystery now, however, is what fans believe is real about the ending.

After the success of True Detective: Night Country, HBO has renewed the anthology series for season 5. More on the news below.
True Detective: Night Country wrapped its run earlier this week with a shocking, violent finale. The whole season, spearheaded by Issa Lopez, has divided audiences with its new, more supernatural approach to the traditional True Detective style.
Night Country nevertheless became the most watched season of True Detective, which has prompted HBO to renew the series for another season, with Lopez to return as showrunner.
As all previous seasons have focused on completely new characters, we can assume we’ve seen the last of Jodie Fosters’ Liz Danvers and Kali Reis’ trooper Navarro. That being said, Night Country did break almost all previous True Detective rules, so perhaps we’ll still return to Ennis, Alaska for another chilly mystery.
Series creator Nic Pizzolatto has recently been criticised for venting...

“True Detective” has been renewed for Season 5 at HBO. Issa López, the creator of “True Detective: Night Country,” will helm the fifth season under her new overall deal with HBO.
The renewal comes as little surprise, given the success of “Night Country,” which saw Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star in the fourth installment of the HBO anthology series. Per HBO, the season is the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million cross platform viewers. The season finale on Feb. 18 was the most-watched episode of the season, drawing 3.2 million viewers across HBO and Max. That represents a 57% increase over the show’s premiere viewership in January.

True Detective is coming back for a fifth season at HBO.
Issa López, who served as showrunner for True Detective: Night Country, the fourth and most successful iteration of the crime franchise, will oversee the next installment as part of an overall deal she signed with the network.
It’s yet to be decided as to whether season five of True Detective will be related to Night Country or will be an entirely new story.
However, what’s clear is that, despite creator Nic Pizzolato’s criticisms, López’s season has brought a return to form for the True Detective universe, becoming the most-watched season with 12.7 million cross platform viewers.
As part of López’s new multiyear deal, she will also create new content for HBO and Max.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for True Detective: Night Country Season 4, Episode 6, “Part 6.”] True Detective: Night Country was not only a great season of television, but also a rejuvenating entry for the HBO franchise itself as the series set its spotlight on detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis). Arriving ten years after its lauded first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, True Detective‘s fourth season (helmed by the talented Issa Lopez) breathes new life into the show after less satisfying second and third seasons. If you need cold hard proof, look no further than the ratings. Night Country was certified fresh by Rotten Tomatoes where it received an overall critic score of 92 percent, compared to Season 1’s 91 percent, Season 2’s 47 percent, and Season 3’s 84 percent. For a second take on the season ratings, Metacritic‘s breakdown gives Season 1 87/100, Season 2 61/100, Season 3 72/100, and Season 4 81/100. In both cases, Night Country is among one of the top ...

Fans of True Detective Season 1 must remember Matthew McConaughey’s character, Rust Cohle, saying “time is a flat circle” in a memorable scene. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote those lines, but he wasn’t involved in writing True Detective: Night Country.

It may not be the most highfalutin adjective, but if you wanted to describe the tone of True Detective: Night Country in a single word, you could do a lot worse than "spooky."
Sure, the show's previous seasons trafficked in creepiness as well, but in taking over for creator Nic Pizzolatto, new showrunner Issa Lopez has taken the "graveyard at midnight" vibes to a new level.
With its constant dark, howling winds, frozen corpses, and actual freakin' ghosts, Night Country has often felt more like a horror flick than a police procedural.
So it's fitting that True Detective Season 4 Episode 6 should kick off the finale proceedings by plunging our protagonists into an underground cave where a woman was murdered years earlier.
Navarro literally takes the lead in this stage of the investigation, following a whispering voice that once again has Danvers (and the audience) wondering if she's supernaturally gifted or...

Sunday marks the final episode of “True Detective: Night Country,” Issa Lopez’s triumphant revival of the HBO series originally created by Nic Pizzolatto. A six-year old murder, five-body “corpsicle,” and chilling hints of the supernatural intertwine throughout the season, all of it made exponentially more chilling and suspenseful by the long night looming over Ennis, Alaska.

But if you're a fan of neither football nor somewhat bland pop melodies, you might be growing a little tired of the Traylor saga.

The complaints about True Detective: Night Country have mostly had to do with the pacing and the show’s focus on interpersonal drama, which may have come at the expense of the storylines that one typically expects of a series centering on a murder investigation.
But even the harshest critics would have to agree that showrunner Issa Lopez has made some bold and impactful visual choices, and the opening scenes of True Detective Season 4 Episode 5 featured some of her most memorable flourishes yet.
From the beginning of its pilot episode, this show has leaned heavily on its primary aesthetic motifs -- namely, coldness and darkness.
Yet we begin this episode with flames and fluorescent light, ironically in service of one of this season's bleakest storylines (not that any of the subplots here are rays of sunshine).

The thing about small towns, which hardly ever see new faces, is that the residents sort of come together and become a family. Devoid of hope, light, or anything good, Ennis seems like a town that should pay its people just so they don’t leave. And it’s not really surprising that in a town like that, a handful of people would make up a very toxic, unbelievably messed-up family. Issa Lopez laces the central investigation of this season with disturbingly convoluted themes of problematic family dynamics and the issues they’re afflicted with. As a result, the penultimate episode of season 4 of True Detective sees the characters in their most vulnerable, unsalvagable states, branded with a curse that’s here to stay.

You couldn’t have seen this one coming. And evidently, Issa Lopez doesn’t care a jot about the thematic styles that True Detective has gotten you used to over the years. We’re not shying away from jumpscares anymore, and that too, more than a couple in just one episode. And the fact that they add this questionable dose of ridiculousness to the otherwise grim episode makes this choice even odder, if anything. Loss and internal chaos play Grinch in this mournful Christmas episode.

A Christmas Of Heartbreak And Mazes Of Emotions
Christmas didn’t make Ennis happy. But, just maybe, not everything that changes in the frozen town when the seemingly endless night hits it is ominous. The sporadic bursts of sensibility that aren’t totally impossible to see in someone like Danvers take on a more unmissable shape in the fourth episode, even though the circumstances are rather depressing.

If you’ve been getting the sinking feeling that True Detective Season 4 is setting you up for disappointment, you’re not alone.
On Twitter and elsewhere, viewers have been expressing their concern that showrunner Issa Lopez has bitten off more than she can chew, gotten in over her head, and other cliches to that effect.
The nit-picking has begun, and the haters are having their say.
Is the criticism justified?
Well, as True Detective Season 4 Episode 4 ushers us into the back half of Night Country's run, we'll admit that we're feeling a little wary about Lopez's ability to nail the dismount.
Danvers and Navarro's conversation at the beginning of the episode serves as a perfect microcosm for the season as a whole.
It bounces from family challenges to Corpsicle matters to inter-departmental drama (involving the higher-up whom Danvers is sleeping with) to the murder of Annie Kowtok.

As we’ve previously discussed, True Detective Season 4 has taken on an awful lot in terms of plot, theme, character development, and just about every other aspect of storytelling.
In fact, if someone asked what this series is about, you could play it safe and say, “A murder investigation in Alaska,” or you could go the pretentious route and say, “Everything.”
The latter response might be a little smug, but it’s just as accurate. Folks, this show is the anti-Seinfeld!
Race, class, religion, the never-ending war between the sexes, and the very origins of human life were all topics that came up for discussion in the first two episodes of Issa Lopez’s wildly ambitious crime drama.
And True Detective Season 4 Episode 3 maintains that focus on the big picture approach with an opening scene in which Annie K. is acting as midwife while a native woman gives birth.

When True Detective first premiered on HBO in January of 2014, audiences gleefully joined in on the investigation into the show's central mysteries, congregating on social media to spout elaborate theories backed by painstaking attention to this richly detailed world.
There was the question, of course, of who was responsible for the string of seemingly connected murders in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana.
But fans eager to pick apart this stylistically adventurous series were interested in far more than figuring out whodunnit.
They wanted to understand the show's philosophy, to figure out what was real and what was hallucinatory.

When HBO announced that True Detective would be returning without any input from creator Nic Pizzolatto, there were concerns that this new iteration of the anthology cop drama would lack the dark eccentricity that initially set the series apart from the police procedural pack.
Possibly in response to those claims, new showrunner Issa Lopez is hinting at pulling off a feat that Pizzolatto never even attempted -- creating a conclusive link between the current season and the one that made the show a sensation back in 2014.
Yes, it's hard to believe, but it's been a full decade since Pizzolatto's bleak twist on the conventions of the pulpy noir genre first left audiences awestruck (and occasionally a bit baffled).
Both commercially and critically, the show never again rose to the heights of the McConaughey-Harrelson season, but Pizzolatto seemed unconcerned, eschewing fan service in favor of two later seasons that offered up...

It’s surreal already; the fan-favorite crime thriller is awaking from its deep slumber of 5 years for an icy 4th installment. We know from Fargo that a crime thriller doesn’t have to hesitate before taking a plunge into the darkness of the inexplicable. Issa Lopez digs up something ancient and sinister from the frozen heart of Ennis and sets the season apart in the process. There are deaths aplenty, and the twinkling Christmas lights do nothing to battle the avalanche of darkness about to engulf the cursed mining town.

When it was announced that Issa Lopez would be taking over "True Detective" season 4 from show creator Nic Pizzolatto, some fans were understandably skeptical. Pizzolatto had created arguably the finest season of TV with the first installment of his crime thriller anthology series, though the second and third seasons failed to garner the same level of critical praise and fan adoration. Regardless, to many Pizzolatto was "True Detective," and whatever Lopez's project was going to be, it was difficult to see how it fit into the series' evolution.
In reality, however, after season 1, the varying quality of subsequent seasons proved that Pizzolatto was not some sort of infallible crime-writing god. In that sense, bringing on a new showrunner to write and direct seemed like a decent idea, especially if that new showrunner could restore what fans loved about the original series while providing a fresh take on the material. Which,...

When the trailer for "True Detective: Night Country" arrived in 2023, it was exciting for many reasons. Not only was the crime anthology series returning after an extended break, the trailer for "Night Country" contained several spiral symbols, suggesting fans of the first season were in for a treat.
Back in 2014, season 1 of Nic Pizzolatto's series introduced us to detectives Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Rustin Cohle (Matthew McConaughey), whose investigation into the disappearance and murder of several girls in and around Lafayette, Louisiana, led them to uncover a child abuse ring with members in the upper echelons of society. Throughout that season, the spiral symbol appeared, both at crime scenes and in Rust's post-addiction visions, and seemed to represent this so-called "Yellow King" cult.

True Detective: Night Country invites viewers into the unforgiving landscape of Ennis, Alaska, as detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) take on a perplexing mystery cloaked in freezing darkness. But was the show actually shot in Alaska? The answer might surprise you. Despite being set in the remote Alaskan environment, the anthology series’ fourth season, helmed by Issa Lopez, was actually shot in Iceland, which serves as a solid stand-in for the remote northwest state. Foster opened up about the filming location during a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where she revealed the reason behind the switch up. True Detective: Night Country hasn’t been shy about drawing connections to season 1 of the hit crime series, down to the very clear supernatural bent of the new case, which sees Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) investigating mysterious disappearances in rural Alaska during the region’s long polar night. Trailers for season 4 have even teased a familiar swirling symbol, the same one that a pair of odd couple Louisiana detectives followed all the way to Carcosa and the Yellow King back in 2014. "True Detective: Night Country" has arrived and looks set to be the best season since the inimitable first. The fourth installment of the anthology series features an all-new story and is overseen by an all-new showrunner in the form of Issa Lopez, who directed the entire season and wrote every episode following the departure of show creator and "True Detective" mastermind Nic Pizzolatto.
But just because this is an entirely new story doesn't mean Lopez has fully abandoned the universe established by her predecessor. In fact, the show starts with a quote attributed to Hildred Castaigne, the central character in a short story from Robert Chambers' 1895 collection "The King in Yellow." That very book provided much of the mythos in which Pizzolatto drenched his Louisiana noir all the way back in 2014. [This story contains spoilers from the season four premiere of True Detective: Night Country.]
Within its first major sequence, True Detective: Night Country loudly and proudly bellows its mission statement: “Shake it up, baby!”
The fourth season of the HBO crime anthology series comes from a brand-new team helmed by director Issa Lopez, with stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis taking on the titular detective duties. A new lineup of talent on and behind the screen absolutely shakes up the True Detective formula, offering something that feels entirely new, while also providing a bone-chilling narrative that feels most aligned with the Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson-starring first season.
Emphasis on “chilling,” too, considering the premise of Night Country is that it’s set in an Alaskan town in the throes of an all-nighter. The sun is setting for the winter months, and in the midst of the perma-dark permafrost, an evil lurks.

With panoramic shots of a wind-swept tundra and a skyline studded with jagged mountaintops, the opening scene of True Detective Season 4 Episode 1 strikes a grandiose tone.
It feels closer to Game of Thrones’ Wildling storylines than to the claustrophobic, gritty interiors that we’ve come to expect from HBO’s divisive cop drama.
Even after the requisite large firearm makes its first appearance -- via a frightened hunter aiming his rifle at a herd of stampeding reindeer -- there's little to give the viewer the sense that we're in 21st-century America, rather than someplace much more exotic and archaic.
It's only when the action shifts inside that the show's fourth season -- helmed by Issa Lopez, who replaces series creator Nic Pizzolatto as showrunner -- begins to bear any resemblance to its first three.

Despite the unpredictability of the last few years, both in Hollywood and beyond, recent years have proven fruitful for female filmmakers. From winning the top awards at the starriest festivals to notching back to back Best Director Oscar winners (for the first time ever for Zhao and Jane Campion) and churning out big-time box office hits, women have been unquestionably on the rise.
Until, perhaps, now. As we do every year, IndieWire is looking ahead at the next two years of studio features directed by women to get a sense of who Hollywood is elevating in still-rarefied spaces. Getting the chance to helm a studio feature is, of course, not the golden ticket for any director.
But it’s hard to deny the power and prestige of directing a big-time movie released by a major studio, even in a world where streaming platforms are making significant inroads into the “blockbuster” space.
