Ice Spice has joined the cast of Spike Lee’s upcoming film High and Low, as Variety reports. The project will serve as the rapper’s acting debut.
Announced in February, Lee’s High and Low is an English-language remake of Akria Kurosawa’s 1963 original, which itself was a loose adaptation of Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom, and is set to star Denzel Washington and feature Jeffery Wright. The project marks the fifth collaboration between Washington and Lee, with 2006’s Inside Man being their most recent meeting. A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures are developing and producing the project, while Lee and Alan Fox penned the script.
Though there is not yet a release date for the project, it has officially begun production. Once complete, A24 is set to distribute the film theatrically, followed by a global launch on AppleTV+, as Apple Original Films has partnered as a co-financier.

Cord Jefferson is calling on Hollywood to take more “risks” when it comes to low- and mid-budget films.
The “American Fiction” writer/director won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for adapting Percival Everett’s “Erasure” for the big screen. Jeffery Wright and Sterling K. Brown are additionally nominated in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories, respectively; the film is also up for Best Picture.
“I understand that this is a risk-averse industry, I get it,” Jefferson said during his acceptance speech onstage. “But $200 million movies are also a risk. And it doesn’t always work out, but you the risk anyway. Instead of making one $200 million movie, try making 20 $10 million movies. Or 50 $4 million movies.”
Jefferson, who was previously celebrated at the 2023 IndieWire Honors, called his remarks “a plea to acknowledge and recognize that there are so many people out there who want the opportunity that I was given.

Barbie’s Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, and Ryan Gosling reprised their roles opposite longtime Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel in a new promo for the 96th Academy Awards on March 10th.
The clip begins with narration courtesy of Helen Mirren, who also provided voice-over work for Barbie last year. “Since the dawn of time, men have been getting lost,” Mirren narrates as Jimmy Kimmel searches for a path back to “OscarsLand.” Kimmel then links up with Kate McKinnon’s ‘Weird Barbie” as she shows him how to make the jump from BarbieLand back to the real world: “A straight shot through the Zone of Interest, past Past Lives, over Anatomy of a Fall falls, and all the way to Carnegie Hall. Then it’s up the hill to Burton Academy, take a Jeffery Wright and go all the way to Los Alamos, New Mexico.”

The last cork has been popped and the final flute of Kirkland Signatures sparkling wine drained down to the last drop. Old Man 2023 has gathered his sash about his withered frame and slunk into the night, clearing the way for cherubic New Year 2024–giggly, chubby and brimming with promise.
Or something. In reality, years don’t flip on and off like a light switch. They smear into each other like paint, until everything is the same weird shade of brownish-purple. But still: we all strive to make each new chapter in the Gregorian filing system a fresh start–a chance to break bad habits and begin good ones.
The traditional way of kickstarting these self-improvement reboots is through the maddeningly self-deceptive ritual of setting New Year’s Resolutions–80% of which are inevitably abandoned by February 1, according to most studies. But hey! A sustainable 20% is still pretty good. And for cineastes,...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Asteroid City, Wes Anderson’s latest film that had its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Anderson penned the script with his frequent collaborator Roman Coppola after the two previously teamed on the Anderson-directed The Darjeeling Limited, Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch and Moonrise Kingdom, the latter of which scored the pair an Original Screenplay Oscar nom in 2023.
The plot is set in 1955 and revolves around the American Southwest desert town of Asteroid City (population: 87), whose famed attraction is a giant meteor crater and observatory. The one-telephone-booth town is playing host to the military and astronomers honoring five Junior Stargazers with awards for their scientific inventions. It’s also the weekend celebrating Asteroid Day, commemorating September 27, 3007 BC, when that Arid Plains meteorite made impact.

Jeffery Wright is rewriting what it means to be a serious academic author in dark comedy “American Fiction,” winner of the TIFF People’s Choice Award this year.
Wright stars as Monk, a novelist whose high-brow books haven’t hit the bestseller list in years. Frustrated, a drunken Monk parodies himself for a mock memoir under a pseudonym, incorporating Black stereotypes…and becomes a hit author in anonymity.
Cord Jefferson wrote and directed the critically acclaimed film, which premiered at TIFF. Jefferson’s directorial debut is an adaptation of Percival Everett’s novel “Erasure”; Everett served as an executive producer on the film, along with Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman.
The official description for “American Fiction” reads: Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen...

Filmmaker Wes Anderson will point his telescope toward outer space this summer with his new film, Asteroid City. In a trailer for the movie, due out June 16, a father’s car breaks down somewhere in the desert where he’s taking his kids for “Asteroid Day” in 1955. From there, things get (surprise!) really quirky as people start questioning the existence of aliens, hover above the ground in jetpacks, and offer to show each other their nude scenes.

The signal has been lit. After months of speculation, we now officially know when The Batman will leap from the shadows of the cinema and onto HBO Max. And it is happening soon. Fans will be able to watch the Caped Crusader’s latest adventure on April 18.
At this point, you might be wondering who hasn’t seen The Batman. The film opened to critical and commercial success on March 4. Since then, it has earned 735 million as of this writing, making it 2022’s highest-grossing film thus far. Over the past few weeks, The Batman has slipped at the box office, falling first to The Lost City during the week of March 25 and then to Morbius the following week. It seems like the right time to move the film to streaming.

Despite rumors that the new Batman reboot “The Batman” might follow in the footsteps of the billion-dollar-grossing “Joker,” co-writer and director Matt Reeves contends the film was always intended to be rated PG-13.
All throughout production, the internet was abuzz with the possibility that we might be getting our first R-rated live-action Batman film in “The Batman.” Warner Bros. had tested the waters of an adult comic book movie with 2019’s “Joker,” which proved successful. And writer/director James Gunn’s 2021 film “The Suicide Squad” was an R-rated DC Comics adaptation on an even larger scale.
But speaking with Den of Geek, Reeves says while his Robert Pattinson Batman film was always intended to be gritty, he never considered venturing into R-rated territory. “In my mind, the movie was always going to be a gritty, edgy, noir, thrilling spectacle that was PG-13,” Reeves told the outlet. “That was always what it was,...

This Marvel’s What If? review contains spoilers.
Marvel’s What If? Episode 4
What If…? episode four is here. While many fans were likely expecting to see Captain Carter show up as soon as they realized it was a Doctor Strange story, that is not the case. Instead, we get a romantic tragedy which pits two versions of Stephen against each other in order to save the woman that they love.
It’s a cosmic ride through Strange’s own arrogance that has absolutely world ending consequences. It’s also, interestingly, the second episode where we see a hero turn to the dark side. It might not mean anything but we definitely think it’s worth noting.
If you’ve been reading our reviews, you’ll know we have a new format for our What If…? coverage which we hope will work as both an in depth breakdown and easy...

Marvel Studios’ first animated series, “What If…” features many Marvel Cinematic Universe actors returning to voice their onscreen characters. One notable admission, however, is Dave Bautista’s Drax.
Bautista, in responding to one Twitter user’s question about why he wasn’t voicing the character who is set to appear in one episodes of the Disney+ series, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” star said he was never asked.
“Let’s start with I was never asked,” Bautista said on Monday, which prompted a confused response by his own “Guardians” director, James Gunn, who replied simply with “What.”

This article contains Massive spoilers for Marvel’s Black Widow
We had to wait a long time for Black Widow. Marvel and Disney’s Phase 4 solo film for Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) was originally set to be released back in May of 2020 but, well, we all know what happened next, so this summer finally brought us our first Premier Access MCU film. Luckily Black Widow was worth the wait.
It’s an action-packed installment that introduces a slew of new characters we’ll likely see again in future MCU films and Disney+ shows. One of those is the highly anticipated Marvel Comics villain Taskmaster, who can mimic any fighting style. You’ve heard of people who have a photographic memory, but Taskmaster has photographic reflexes and in Black Widow we see the character perfectly copy the moves of Hawkeye, Captain America, Black Panther, and even Natasha herself, making them a formidable adversary.

“The Batman” writer-director Matt Reeves unveiled the first trailer for the film during the final panel for the DC FanDome event on Saturday.
The moody teaser, set to Nirvana’s “Something in the Way,” focuses most on the presence of the Riddler (Paul Dano), who is leaving a series of deadly teasers for the Batman and Commissioner Gordon (Jeffery Wright). It also reveals a few quick glimpses of Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, provides the first full look of Pattinson in the Batsuit and driving the Batmobile, and underlines this Batman’s brutal approach to fighting crime as he beats the crap out of a low-level hoodlum to make a point.
In the panel for the film, Reeves said “The Batman” won’t be an origin story per se, but it does start in “Year Two” of Batman’s emergence, in which Batman and several other iconic characters — Catwoman, the Riddler,...

As I’ve mentioned before, I can’t afford Disney Plus right now. A bar downtown is showing off The Mandalorian for free tonight though, so I might just check that out. But you know what else is free? Clips on Twitter, baby!
Disney Plus has an Expanding the Universe featurette within the service and it shows off some clips from the upcoming Marvel’s What If…? series, which, up until now, has maintained a good amount of secrecy. Today, however, some new footage is out for all to see and a few intrepid Twitterers have posted clips showing off sections of a small handful of the stories.
Up first, we’ve got a look at Captain Carter:

One my favorite debuts this decade was A.J. Edwards’ young Lincoln tale The Better Angels. Terrence Malick’s longtime collaborator has now returned with a modern-day tale for his follow-up. Premiering at festivals as Friday’s Child but now going by Age Out for the theatrical release, the drama stars Tye Sheridan, Imogen Poots, Caleb Landry Jones, and Jeffery Wright. Following a teenage drifter just out of foster and who finds a new love, the film will get a release this November and now the beautiful new trailer and poster have arrived.

We recently learned that Warner Bros. and director Matt Reeves were looking for an actress of color to take on the role of Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman, in The Batman. Well, today we have a shortlist of actresses who are said to be up for the role.
The news comes from Geeks Worldwide, and the list of actresses include Lupita Nyong'o (Black Panther), Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Beauty and the Beast), Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Dark Phoenix), and Logan Browning (Dear White People).
Thompson and Nyong’o are the biggest names on the list. They are both great actresses, but the studio could always go with lesser known actress. There are benefits to that, and it’ll be interesting to see who ends up landing the role.

The summer movie season also means an early glimpse of some of the fall’s major films and today one of the first trailers from the season has arrived. The Goldfinch, which comes from Brooklyn director John Crowley, is an adaptaion of the Pulitzer Prize winner of the same name by Donna Tartt. Starring Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman, Oakes Fegley, Aneurin Barnard, Finn Wolfhard, Sarah Paulson, Luke Wilson, and Jeffery Wright, the film follows the aftermath of a boy’s life following his mother’s death in a terrorism attack at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“It’s a very powerful and emotional coming-of-age story told from a personal point of view,” Elgort tells USA Today. “It touches on the themes we all experience at one time or another – everything from loss, guilt, deception and betrayal to love, hope, friendship and redemption.”

HBO has released the first trailer for Westworld Season 3 and it introduces us to Aaron Paul’s character. What interesting about this trailer is that it doesn’t really come off as a Westworld trailer until the very end when we see Paul’s character encounter Evan Rachel Wood’s Dolores.
It looks like there’s a chance this next season might take place outside of the park and give us a real looks at the futuristic world in which the story is set. It looks like this next season is going to have a very different vibe than the previous seasons.
The new season also stars Vincent Cassel, Tessa Thompson, Lena Waithe, Kid Cudi, Liam Hemsworth, Thandie Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffery Wright and more.
Season 3 of Westworld will debut in 2020.

The brainchild of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s cerebral interpretation of Michael Crichton’s 1973 sci-fi western, Westworld became the most-watched first season of an original series in HBO history, earning the network a bevy of accolades, and vindicating the Time Warner division’s $100 million gamble.
In season 1, Arnold’s labyrinth of consciousness provided visitors with an unparalleled look at the inherent humanity of Artificial Intelligence and the dangers of playing god. “The Maze,” or so it is dubbed by those above-the-line, appropriately delivered twists and turns, luring both the guests and hosts on a “voyage of self-discovery.”
At season’s end, Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) shepherded the robot revolt against humanity, killing countless Delos’ executives and the park’s co-creator, Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins), thereby initiating his last narrative. The finale had its pièce de résistance deadened, however,...

HBO has released several new photos from the highly anticipated second season of Westworld. They offer fans a little tease of what is to come. It was recently confirmed that several characters from Season 1 that we thought were dead or missing will be returning. You'll see a few of these characters in the photos below including Ed Harris' The Man in Black and Tessa Thompson's Charlotte Hale. Below the photos, I included a video that features the cast and crew talking about the series and their characters. One thing that Jeffery Wright has said is:
“The scale of season 2 is just nuts, literally right out of the gate. It’s so much more expansive, it makes the first season look like a gentile kitchen drama.”
Then there's creator Jonathan Nolan, who describes the Season 2 as a "journey outward":
“We want to feel like the show is rocketing ahead.

This article processes some hard truths many won’t like.
The first part of this narrative, Milestone Is Dead, got a lot of people talking.
Nothing and I mean nothing in that article was new. I’ve written about what and why I thought the holdup at Milestone was many times. The only thing that was new was the title.
Every move Milestone has made I’ve predicted beforehand, and done so in writing.
But as always put a new spin on an old point, and people see something bright and shiny and want to play with it.
Now people are paying attention.
Paying attention to see whether or not I’m going to throw more shade at my former partners. I didn’t throw any in the first place. I told the truth Milestone 2.0 formed almost seven years ago, and there are no books.
Milestone is dead for four reasons.

There’s a quote from The Tale of Genji that has stuck with me since I read it more than a decade ago (and I swear this is going to be a review of The Good Dinosaur so stick with me a moment here) in which they describe a painting Genji made for a painting contest thusly: “this, done at undisturbed leisure by a genius at the art, was beyond anything.” It’s become a kind of shorthand used by me and a couple of my friends who took the class with me when we describe something particularly good we’ll describe the creator as “a master at leisure” but there might be a second way to interpret the quote. It might not just be that a phenomenal talent with unlimited time will make the greatest art, it could also be that an exceptional artist freed from the turmoil of...

I was sold on Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur the moment I heard what it was going to be about. Everyone loves dinosaurs! My excitement for the movie grew the more that I saw of it. Captain Phillips could put Tom Hanks in Oscar contention, but All the Boys Love Mandy Lane is a sad retread of a slasher film. People's critics weigh in on what to see and what to skip this weekend at the movies. Director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, United 93) delivers a corker of a thriller, complete with an award-worthy performance from Tom Hanks as Richard Phillips, the Maersk Alabama skipper kidnapped by the pirates.

Written by Dennis Lehane and Howard Korder
Directed by Alik Sakharov
Airs Sundays at 9pm Est on HBO

Not being familiar with the previous seasons, there is assuredly much more going on with Mueller than we’ve seen in just the past two weeks, but his internal conflict is engaging for this viewer nonetheless. Shannon is an incredible actor and it...
