Call the Midwife is well on its way to becoming the next Downton Abbey.
The popular BBC One drama, which airs Stateside on PBS, has been renewed for Seasons 7, 8 and 9, with a Christmas special included in each, our sister site Deadline reports.
For those unfamiliar with the scripted drama, it follows a dedicated team of midwives and nuns working at a convent in London’s East End in the 1950s and ’60s. The show is based on real-life nurse Jennifer Worth’s best-selling trilogy of memoirs.

The popular drama Call the Midwife debuts its fourth season in America on PBS tonight (the BBC has also commissioned a fifth season, which is expected to air in 2016). Continuing to be inspired by the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, Midwife finds its main characters — the nurses, midwives and nuns from Nonnatus House, and the poor community members whom they serve — entering the 1960s. The new season will see the introduction of a couple of new nurses, Barbara Gilbert (Charlotte Ritchie) and Phyllis Crane (Linda Bassett), both of whom don’t make the greatest of first impressions. Besides the number of times this period drama makes you sob like a baby. At BuzzFeed, you can read my latest feature, "7 Reasons Call The Midwife Is One Of The Best Shows On Television," in which I extol the virtues of Call the Midwife, which returns for its third season on Sunday, March 30. The third season of BBC’s Call the Midwife — which wrapped up last month in the U.K. and begins on March 30 on PBS in the States — attracted an audience of more than 10 million viewers when it aired across the Atlantic, a figure that puts it on nearly equal footing with Downton Abbey. But that series gets far more attention than this subtle and superb period drama. Set in 1950s East End London and based on Jennifer Worth’s memoirs, Call the Midwife tracks the lives of a group of young midwives and the sisterhood of nuns...

For 10 years, the Neal Street company has combined critical and popular triumphs. This autumn they're conquering the Us
On a side street near Covent Garden in central London, a production company with a startlingly varied portfolio of film, stage and TV hits has something fresh to celebrate. Founded by Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris and Caro Newling in 2003, Neal Street Productions is marking its 10th birthday.
The roll call is impressive. The company is the hidden link behind the BBC's flagship The Hollow Crown Shakespeare films, the stage shows Shrek the Musical, Merrily We Roll Along and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the BBC's popular Sunday evening drama Call the Midwife.
It is a surprising mix, and one that looks more unlikely still when you realise Neal Street also ran the Bridge Project with Kevin Spacey's Old Vic, brought the acclaimed play Enron into the West End, co-produced the film Revolutionary Road,...

Season one of Call The Midwife was a surprise hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Heidi Thomas (Upstairs Downstairs) did an amazing job of adapting Jennifer Worth’s characters for the small screen. Millions of fans laughed, wept and cheered as Jenny, Chummy and friends delivered babies and helped some of London’s poorest folks to rise above their lot in life.
Season two, was arguably even better than the first season of the show because we didn’t have to waste time with introductions. We just jumped straight into the action as Sister Evangelina and Trixie risked life and limb to deliver a baby aboard a cargo ship. The first episode of season two set a tone and a tempo that was to remain in place for the rest of the 2013′s new episodes. Without giving too much away, we saw one nurse give birth,...

ITV has commissioned a new medical drama set in the 1960s.
Breathless will be centred on a group of gynaecologists working in London at the advent of the 'sexual revolution' in 1961, before the legalisation of abortion and the introduction of the contraceptive pill.
"There were some women working in this area and they will be in the series, but gynaecology was a mainly male world at this time," a source told The Guardian.
"This was before the pill and the legalisation of abortion and the 1960s hit the country and it was a totally different world. It was also before Profumo, and there was a lot of covering up going on within the establishment which at the time was relatively immune from scrutiny."
Breathless has been co-created by Paul Unwin (Casualty), who confirmed via the Sofa Productions website website on Friday (February 1) that he will storyline the series and write a number of scripts.

Miranda Hart has said that she "admires" her Call the Midwife character Chummy. The Miranda actress portrays Camilla Fortescue-Cholmondeley-Browne in the BBC drama, a midwife based on one of writer Jennifer Worth's real-life colleagues, who passed away in 2011. Worth personally recommended Hart as "perfect" for the part, with the actress explaining that she was instantly interested in the project upon reading the original book. "The producers sent me the book and of course I went straight to the chapter where Chummy makes her entrance at Nonnatus House," she told the Radio Times. "I was really intrigued, thinking, 'Who is this woman I apparently remind the writer of?' and that was me immediately hooked." Speaking about her character, she sad: "I really admire Chummy. Guest column by Alice Maltin I watched the first episode several months ago. Screaming women giving birth in squalid conditions in the poorest part of London was not my cup of tea. Looking for a pleasant escape, I turned off the DVD. Then, on a rainy Sunday afternoon with nothing to do, I watched an episode…and then another. I couldn’t stop. Based on the best-selling memoirs of Jennifer Worth, Call the Midwife isn’t just about the birthing of children. It’s about people, all kinds, who carry on no matter what life throws at them. They survived WW2 and now they must survive life. The story begins in the early 1950s in East London. This is not the London of...
