- Russell was raised in Cleveland, Tennessee where he first took an interest in theatre as a sophomore in high school. At age 17, he spent a summer in New York where he performed Off-Broadway. Russell moved to Orlando, Florida in 2001 with a college scholarship from American Movie Classics. After college, he spent several years appearing on stage before moving to Los Angeles in 2011. - His first job working as a puppeteer was with Jane Henson and Heather Henson for the Orlando Puppet Festival.
- He has a degree in Anthropology from Rollins College and a degree in Film from Full Sail University.
- Received a black belt in Shotokan karate.
