The Alienist is an upcoming procedural series that stars Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning who work together as early criminal profilers in 1896, and try to get into the mind of one of New York City’s first serial killers before they hunt him down.
The Alienist is based on the novel by Caleb Carr and created for TV by Cary Fukunaga — which explains the somber cinematic tone.
You might recognize Brühl from all his years of playing Nazis and superhero villains. It looks like Brühl has finally landed a role as a gifted criminal profiler.
“Instead of looking to cure a disease of the body, I look to help those who are suffering from illness of the mind,” Daniel Brühl’s Dr. Laszlo Kreizler says in the opening shots of the Alienist trailer. “Sometimes, society looks upon people as crazy. It may only mean that they are alienated from their own true natures.

Update: Dan Stevens will lead Apostle, according to Variety.
Gareth Evans‘ years-long silence — filmmaking-wise; I don’t know what the guy does with his life — may be coming to an end, as a THR article informs us the Raid helmer’s collaborating with Xyz Films and Severn Screen on Apostle. A period thriller, it concerns “a mysterious man who travels to a remote island in search of his missing sister” who’s been “kidnapped by a religious cult, which is demanding a ransom for her return” — presumably leading to a bit of ass-kicking, or so I think when “it soon becomes clear that the cult will regret the day it baited this man.”
The Raid circa some very different time and place is a thrilling proposition, though it may be preferable to see Evans expand his canvas a bit. Apostle seems primed for just that shift.

Charlie Sheen is now speaking out against the Mexico-based doctor who claims to have cured the actor of HIV using a medically contested treatment involving goat milk.
Dr. Sam Chachoua appeared on Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday and told the host that he spent months with Sheen in Mexico to cure Sheen's disease. But a recent tweet from the Two and a Half Men star suggests otherwise.
"Dr Sam I was with u in Mexico for 1 day," Sheen tweeted Sunday. "It's illegal for u to practice in U.S.A. where u treated me for 2 months."

The X-Wing was central to the Star Wars Original Trilogy. But what does its evolution through the films tell us?
Spoilers for the two Star Wars trilogies to date lie within, as well as Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Incom’s T-65B fighter, and its precursors, have been a staple of the Star Wars universe from the moment that we arrive at Yavin IV’s Massassi temple just prior to A New Hope’s climactic battle. Pitched in supplementary material as an easy-to-fly fighter, adopting the same control system as the common-or-garden T-16 Skyhopper - a vehicle beloved of farm boys across the galaxy looking to bullseye Womp Rats - its simplicity goes some way to explaining Luke Skywalker’s seemingly inherent ability to fly one with the best of them straight off the bat.

Read More: 'Thanks for Having Us' Web Series Explores the Austin Comedy Scene A feature documentary in the making, "When We Were Live" is in the process of restoring hundreds of old VHS tapes from the public access age, many of which contain interviews and footage of now-famous directors. The documentary's director, John Moore, has posted two of these clips -- interviews with Richard Linklater and Robert Rodriguez -- that will certainly evoke nostalgia for the bygone era of public access TV. Public access TV -- something that is now entirely lost to the reign of the YouTube generation -- now stands as a vestige and emblem of old Diy filmmaking. Austin's public access TV in the '80s and '90s was a thriving world of both the eccentric and the boundary-pushing, and was an exciting new space for future and would-be actors and directors. True Detective season one director Cary Fukunaga is set to direct and executive produce a new drama series called The Alienist, which is based on the Caleb Carr thriller. Fukunaga does great work and is currently developing the big screen adaptation of Stephen King’s It. This new project he’s jumping on seems like it's a good fit for him.
The story is set in "Gilded Age New York, and it follows Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, who, with the help of newspaper reporter John Moore and police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, uses the emerging discipline of psychology to track down one of New York City’s first serial killers.’
The series is being written by Hossein Amini, and it sounds like it will be an intense and fascinating thriller. Paramount Television President Amy Powell said in a statement:

He will executive produce and direct. Two A-list Hollywood screenwriters are also executive producing: Eric Roth (Oscar-winner "Forrest Gump") and Hossein Amini (Oscar nominee "Wings of the Dove"). Anonymous Content, which pioneered the director-centric approach with Fukunaga on "True Detective" at HBO, has the rights and will produce with Steve Golin and Rosalie Swedlin as executive producers. Years ago Scott Rudin had tried to make the project into a movie but it never got off the ground. It was period, which is costly. The great concept is that the book tracks Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, newspaper reporter John Moore and police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt in 19th century New York City as they deploy the emerging science of psychology to track a serial killer. Think "The Knick" meets "True Detective." "The Alienist is a fascinating and distinctive, fast-paced psychological thriller that is wonderfully evocative of...

It may go out on DisneyXD, but Star Wars Rebels is far more than a kid’s show according to John Moore...
There's an obvious reason geeks should watch new animated series Star Wars: Rebels, which is this: it's Star Wars.
It has the look, the feel, and (perhaps most importantly) the music that we know and love... What’s more it also has some nascent signs of the character interplay and humour that made watching the Ot cast aboard the Millenium Falcon such good fun - but if that isn’t enough for you, then read on...

Well, file this under "No, Really?" Following in the footsteps of the fictitious scientists of Jurassic Park, apparently a baby dinosaur has been cloned in Britain. Didn't these people ever watch Gorgo? No good can come from this at all.
News Hound scored the story and odd picture, which, real or not, we had to share.
According to the site scientists at Liverpool's John Moore University have successfully cloned a dinosaur, a spokesman from the university said. The dinosaur, a baby Apatosaurus nicknamed “Spot,” is currently being incubated at the University's College of Veterinary Medicine.
The scientists extracted DNA from preserved Apatosaurus fossils, which were on display at the university’s museum of natural science. Once the DNA was harvested, scientists injected it into a fertile ostrich womb.
“Ostriches share a lot of genetic traits with dinosaurs,” said Dr. Gerrard Jones, a biology professor at Ljmu and the project’s leading scientist.

Police Take Notice” says the sign he shot on this snowy Saturday, along with pictures of snowmen, Christmas lights, and signs in storefront windows expressing support for the community. Director: John Moore. Review: Adam Wing. When is a Die Hard movie not a Die Hard movie? Bruce Willis is back in action as John McClane, the heroic New York cop with a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Or at least, that’s how the story is supposed to go. Over the course of five movies John McClane has suffered the same fate as Lethal Weapon’s Martin Riggs, almost in reverse. We fell in love with Riggs because he was vulnerable, edgy and teetering on the brink. He was also a smart ass. By the end of part four Riggs was a family man, a comedy sidekick and a lot less interesting.
