Sinclair, Inc. has hired an investment banking firm to explore a possible sale of more than 60 local television stations, according to a report.
On Thursday, CNBC said the media company was weighing the possibility of trimming its local TV station portfolio by as much as 30 percent, which would involve selling off more than five dozen of its 185 television stations across the country.
Through local marketing agreements, Sinclair operates nearly 300 local broadcast TV stations within the lower 48 states. Stations owned by shell companies like Cunningham Broadcasting and Deerfield Media are not part of the strategy, according to a person familiar with the matter, who confirmed CNBC’s report and provided additional information on condition of anonymity.

Like Google, Netflix has evolved from a Silicon Valley venture to a legitimate verb in the cultural lexicon. Over a decade after expanding from DVD-by-mail to streaming service, and seven since debuting its first original series with House of Cards, Netflix still dominates the online TV landscape. While competitors like Warner Bros., Disney, and Apple certainly vie for our time with their own in-house programs, the sheer inundation of Netflix originals requires its very own examination.

Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford were major players in the original Star Wars trilogy as Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. As part of the Resistance fighting to bring down the tyrannical Empire, the two played integral roles in bringing it down. While the first film set up the world and the overall rivalry between the two, the sequels go all out with their war against each other.
Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope
The iconic lightsaber fight from Empire Strikes Back, and the twist, remain the most iconic moments in the franchise. Luke’s lightsaber was put on auction in 2017, a year before the passing of the franchise’s producer Gary Kurtz. The price of the lightsaber was less than Ford’s combined salary for the original trilogy.

And just like that, Charles changed his mind about whether Ripley should fight the lawsuit.
Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 11 featured Ripley getting triggered at his deposition while dealing with more of Scully's nonsense.
Ripley didn't mind Charles stepping in on his behalf, but I'm not nearly as calm about it as he is.
Ripley Should Have Made This Decision Himself.
Maybe it's the Don Quixote in me wanting Ripley to keep tilting at this windmill, but I don't think he should have backed down from the lawsuit.
Charles encouraged it in the first place because Pawel lies with impunity and uses his influence to intimidate people into not holding him accountable.
Those are damn good reasons to stand up to him.
Charles was worried about Ripley's mental health, but does deciding for him that the lawsuit should end help things?

Given its warm critical reception and past PGA and SAG Award notices, it makes sense that “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” has maintained a massive lead over its Best TV Movie competitors ever since we opened our 2024 Emmys predictions center. However, because the original “Monk” was never even nominated for Best Comedy Series during its eight-season run, the one-off Peacock continuation can’t exactly be considered a shoo-in. In truth, it faces quite a few strong challengers, including the laugh-packed Netflix offering “Unfrosted.”
Hours before its May 3 premiere, “Unfrosted” rose above its 100/1 Gold Derby odds and pulled ahead of both “Finestkind” and “Genie” to become this year’s seventh most likely TV movie nominee. Its next immediate challenge is passing sixth place runner “Scoop” (also from Netflix), which is currently a predicted nominee among our editors and experts.

The theme of the 2024 Met Gala was “The Garden of Time” — based on a story by J.G. Ballard – but, really, the theme of all Met Galas always has been: Go big or stay home!
While there have been myriad gorgeous gowns, jewels and natty tuxes over many Met Gala years, what do the most dress-obsessed actually remember? Cher half-naked. Lady Gaga’s change of dress performance art. Billy Porter’s royal entrance in Egyptian armor and entourage. Katy Perry as a chandelier. They all proved: It doesn’t pay to stay staid — even if staid means gorgeous.
So the question comes down to: Does one do good outrageous? Or outrageously bad? Both the bad and the beautiful always get the most ink — sometimes, you can’t tell the difference. With such risky looks, it’s a toss of the coin. If you’re Cher, you can pull off anything. Everyone...

EW has shared two new official promo stills for Alien: Romulus as part of their summer preview, and one of 'em pays homage to a scene from Aliens.
In James Cameron's follow-up to Ridley Scott's '70s classic, Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn) shows Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) how to use a pulse rifle before the crew land in some real pretty sh*t with the attacking Xenomorphs, and the moment is recreated here with Archie Renaux's Tyler and Cailee Spaeny's Rain Carradine.
The second image gives us another look at a Xenomorph about to give an unfortunate crew member a very bad day.
While the previous movies focused on blue-collar colleagues, soldiers, and prisoners, director Fede Alvarez explains how Romulus will take a different approach by introducing a group of characters who have become as close as family.

Space is great. It’s massive, it’s colorful, and you can have big fights with lasers there. It really does have everything you could want. But it also has problems—mainly, like we said, that it’s massive. In fact it’s so massive that if you want to go anywhere in it (apart from a few nearby planets with hardly anyone to shoot lasers at), by the time you get there, you’re dead. Now you might think that if you can just go fast enough, you’ll get there before you die, but there’s a problem.
That problem, as Albert Einstein tells us, is the speed of light. Light, in a vacuum, travels at just short of 300 million meters per second, fast enough to get from Earth to the moon in a little over a second. The thing is if you’re chasing a light beam,...

Dr. Charles could have had a powerful story.
He spent the hour trying to find answers about a patient's suicide while her husband refused to let her go despite her irreversible coma. Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 10 offered a sad story, but it wasn't as emotional as it might have been because of how it was all resolved.
[Note: This review contains discussions of suicide that could be upsetting for some readers.]
The story started perfectly, with June's husband asking why his wife chose to end her life and blaming himself while Charles reassured him that it wasn't his fault.
Nathan: What if the problem was me? Bad husband, neglecting her... what if I"m ther season she jumped?
Charles: Nathan, no. The reasons people take their own lives are mysterious and complex and it's rarely any one thing or one person.

Charles' reassurance probably seemed like empty words to Nathan.

There are movies that make you want one thing more than anything else: for whatever's happening on the screen to end as quickly as possible.
Reddit users selected popular movies that made them want just that.
1. Saltburn, 2023
In 2020, Emerald Fennell made her debut with the tragicomedy Promising Young Woman. The movie won her an Academy Award for Original Screenplay and gave endless opportunities to create her next project – Saltburn, a rip-off of The Talented Mr. Ripley.
The structure of the movie begins to fall apart in the middle as Oliver "skillfully" (actually clumsily) begins to work his way to the top. Many viewers positioned the movie as one of the most scandalous of the year – Saltburn undoubtedly shocks with some scenes (we feel sorry for every cemetery worker who's seen it), but seasoned viewers were tired of its extreme predictability.

Despite having lost three of her shipmates to an alien invader she doesn’t understand, despite learning that her shipmate and science officer Ash (Ian Holm) is an android, despite nearly getting killed when Ash tried to shove a porn mag down her throat, it’s something else that truly disturbs Ripley in Alien. With those two words, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) realizes that she’s at the bottom of a food chain, and not just because there’s a bloodthirsty Xenomorph on board. At 76 years old, Stephen King is a very active social media user, and it's not uncommon for him to share his thoughts on a particular movie or TV series with his readers.
But what is rare is a project that would truly shock him. And that's exactly what happened the other day, as King shared a raving opinion. What's more, our readers will be surprised to learn that the project that stunned King is not a supernatural horror series at all, as it is Netflix's new drama thriller Baby Reindeer.
Baby Reindeer's Colossal Ratings
When Baby Reindeer debuted on Netflix on April 11, 2024, it immediately made its way onto the list of the streaming service's most-watched shows worldwide. For the week of April 8-14, the series made its way into the Global Top 10, coming in at number five with 2.6 million unique views. Remarkably, it even outperformed the popular Ripley starring Andrew Scott.

If you watched TV shows in the late 90s and early 2000s, you will remember that most popular shows did not focus on a consistent plot. Each episode told its own arc and there was no need to know the characters’ backstory.
It was a pretty smart move: a person could jump into the show at any time. However, one series changed the way the TV projects were made – Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Today, Fewer and Fewer Viewers Remember Buffy
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is Joss Whedon's cult series about a high school girl who leads a double life. During the day she studies and spends time with her friends Xander and Willow, and at night she goes out into the abandoned streets of the city and the cemetery to kill demons.
Today, only hardcore fans in their 30s seem to remember Buffy, despite the show’s cult status.

Hulu’s acclaimed new limited series “We Were the Lucky Ones” is led by Logan Lerman. who give the best performance of his career. Adapted from Georgia Hunter‘s 2017 book of the same, the story follows the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family torn apart by WWII. It’s a difficult watch but creator Erica Lipez has crafted a gripping, vital narrative with Lerman at the center of the show. “The light. Always, the light.” Tom Ripley is staring at a Caravaggio painting in a Roman church, his typical blank expression a touch more bewildered than usual, when a priest comes up behind him and tells him to pay attention to the light, how the artist uses the contrast of brightness and deep shadow to direct the eye. The moment is brief; Tom isn’t one for introspection, and like a shark, he never stays in place for long. But the line doubles as a clue to the audience as well, some of whom have been as bemused as Tom by “Ripley’s” quietly dazzling style.

Over the past few months, Netflix has been busy treating its audience to new big-budget projects, from the live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen to the much-hyped 3 Body Problem and Ripley with Andrew Scott. But as high-profile as Netflix's premieres are, they seem to pale in comparison to what competing streaming services are offering.
According to numerous data and statistics, a large number of American households have recently preferred platforms such as Hulu and Max, thanks to the regular addition of acclaimed full-length new releases, or Prime Video, especially thanks to the recent hit Fallout.
In such a context, it is particularly surprising that among all the movies and TV series on numerous streaming services, one of the leaders is the movie directed by Matthew Vaughn, Argylle, released earlier this year. Although the movie had a lot of hype even before its release thanks...

The last time I spoke to Noah Jupe was four years ago when he was just 15 years old. It was over Zoom, and he was promoting HBO’s “The Undoing” from a Detroit hotel room, where he was under mandatory quarantine waiting to be cleared to start work on Steven Soderbergh’s “No Sudden Move.”
At the time, Jupe’s list of credits already included “The Night Manager,” “Suburbicon,” the first two “A Quiet Place” films and “Ford v Ferrari.” He had earned a Spirit Award nomination for his work starring role in “Honey Boy,” director Alma Har’el’s drama loosely based on Shia Labeouf’s childhood.
The British actor is now 19 and I’m meeting him once again over Zoom — this time, he’s in his London-area home — for this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. He’s promoting Apple TV+’s “Franklin.” The limited series follows Benjamin Franklin,...

“I really wanted to discover what wasn’t there,” explains Jeremy Jordan when asked about his portrayal of the titular figure in “The Great Gatsby.” The actor is embodying the enigmatic Jay Gatsby in a Broadway musical adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel. The actor is interested in exploring the “romanticism” and “mania” that exist in this confounding figure who enchants Long Island in the 1920s. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The musical follows Nick Carraway (Noah Ricketts) who befriends the uber rich Gatsby after receiving an invitation to one of the socialite’s lavish Long Island parties. Gatsby isn’t just an extravagant host, however. He has his sights set on reclaiming his long lost love Daisy (Eva Noblezada), who happens to be Nick’s cousin. Gatsby machinations successfully lure Daisy back to him, but his secret misdeeds threaten to unravel the life he has so carefully created.

I never liked Tom Ripley but I keep meeting him.
I’ve “met” Ripley in five films, and he’s now the protagonist of a somber eight-part Netflix series. So filmmakers clearly find his character intriguing. Even though he has no character.
That, in itself, reminds me that Hollywood is suffering the same problem as Washington: an absence of vital young protagonists. Voters are confronted by an election that’s really a rerun, likely opened by a debate no one wants to witness.
In filmmaking, the worldwide success of Oppenheimer told us that a complex story becomes more interesting if it’s also about someone interesting. Yet movies with vibrant young protagonists seem to be losing their moment.
Dan Lin, the new chief of film at Netflix, confides a desire — since rebutted by Ted Sarandos on Thursday’s Q1 earnings call — to steer away from mindless mega-budget action films like...

Will “Under the Bridge” go over big with voters? Did Anna Sawai just lock up the Emmy? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss Hulu’s new limited series, the penultimate episode of “Shōgun” and more.
Based on Rebecca Godfrey‘s book of the same name, “Under the Bridge,” which premiered with two episodes on Wednesday, tells the true story of Reena Virk (Vritika Gupta), a 14-year-old who was assaulted by a group of teens, mostly girls, and then murdered in a small town in British Columbia, Canada, in 1997. Riley Keough plays Godfrey, who died of lung cancer in 2022, a week after the show was announced, and Lily Gladstone plays a detective. Both are campaigning in supporting, which on the surface seems like category fraud, but we explain why this is the correct placement for both and how the teen cast members — which includes Chloe Guidry,...

Chicago Med hiatus: When does the show return and what should fans expect from the next new episode?
Chicago Med is still on an extended spring hiatus as the show takes a break before racing toward the season finale.
Some fans may already be upset that the One Chicago shows have taken such a long break during April, but new episodes are on the horizon.
As a reminder, two Hollywood strikes paused the production of the NBC dramas. It delayed the new seasons from premiering for many months.
When the shows finally returned in January, Chicago Med fans were reminded that Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) had left the show.
Dr. Halstead’s final episode was the Season 8 finale, where he quit working at the hospital and traveled to Seattle. When he got off the plane, he was greeted by Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) and her daughter.
Several new doctors have joined the fold on the Chicago Med cast this season, adding some freshness to the show.

Tom Ripley remains one of the most enigmatic characters to ever cross from literature to both the big and small screen, with a wealth of portrayers – from Alain Delon to Andrew Scott – bringing Patricia Highsmith’s character to life. With Ripley out on Netflix, one of the stars of 1999’s The Talented Mr. Ripley, Jude Law, has some major praise for the latest adaptation. (You can also read our own Alex Maidy’s 9/10 review here.)
Jude Law may not have played Tom Ripley (he portrayed the conned Dickie Greenleaf), but he recognizes just how good Steven Zaillian’s version is while also praising the source material. “I’ve watched at least five or six of [the episodes]…Like any great source material, it’s really rewarding and interesting to watch something from a new perspective, a new angle…I’m enjoying it…How can one not? Tom Ripley is getting another chance on the awards circuit. The sinister con artist, created by author Patricia Highsmith in a series of novels, is played by Andrew Scott in the new limited series “Ripley” from Netflix. A quarter-century ago a variation of the same story was told in Anthony Minghella‘s film “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” but while that iteration received five Oscar nomination, it was snubbed for Best Picture, and star Matt Damon was left out of Best Actor. Can Scott make up for that with a nom for Best Movie/Limited Actor?
Damon’s portrayal of Tom Ripley had more warmth to it, a sense of longing (“I always thought it would be better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody”). He was a tragic monster who trapped himself in a web of lies and murder. Scott’s performance suggests someone more methodical and calculating.

3 Body Problem clocked another week atop Netflix’s TV charts — though it appears to have been a slow week for the streamer’s series.
The drama series from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, as well as Alexander Woo, clocked just 4.8M views in its third week at No. 1. Consider that the series tallied 11M views in its first weekend on Netflix and could only muster second place.
The series now sits just below 40M views in total since launch, which places it about halfway to the most popular list. It would need more than 83M views in its 91-day premiere window to beat out The Witcher Season 1. This is still looking relatively unlikely, since the series peaked with about 15.6M views in one week and viewership has steeply declined in the past two measurement periods.
The Gentlemen took third place again, but its viewership also declined to 3.7M views.

When it comes to the most iconic leads to grace the silver screen, one can’t leave Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley out of the equation. While the Alien IP has witnessed several installments since its inception in ’79, the first two releases remain the franchise’s peak, often considered some of the most important contributors to the sci-fi landscape.

The recipient of numerous accolades including two Golden Globes and a Grammy, Sigourney Weaver is undoubtedly one of the best actresses in Hollywood. She is well-known for her diverse filmography which comprises films like Alien and Working Girl; while the former is a sci-fi horror, the latter is a romantic comedy-drama.

The character of Tom Ripley first appeared in Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel "The Talented Mr. Ripley," a salacious story about a con man who is hired to locate an old school chum named Dickie Greenleaf but who ends up becoming obsessed with him, killing him, and supplanting him. Ripley is not a charming con man, but he is staggeringly clever and possesses a talent for subterfuge. He's also driven by his baser desires, unable to resist pursuing the women and men he lusts after (Ripley is likely bisexual) or stealing the money he so desperately wants. Each time, Ripley gets away with it, as evidenced by the fact that he starred in five novels published through to 1991.

Tom Ripley is back and in a big way. First introduced in Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 psychological thriller novel, Ripley is a sociopath, murderer, and con artist. He’s also the character Highsmith identified with-no wonder she wrote four more novels featuring Ripley. A 2023 New York Times article stated, “her concepts are daring, her portrayals of men in the throes of personality disorder and psychopathic leanings are equally repulsive and propulsive…she was a lesbian who identified more with men; an ardent pursuer of pleasure, especially in her youth…a raging antisemite…she could never hold on to happiness.”
Andrew Scott, the “hot priest” of “Fleabag,” is the latest actor to play the character described as having “an elusive sexuality,” in Netflix’s “Ripley,” a handsome, black-and-white limited series from Oscar-winning screenwriter/director Steve Zaillian (“Schindler’s List”).

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we revisit the still unpredictable drama field.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and we’ve circled back to the most chaotic genre of this Emmys cycle: drama. That’s fitting, I guess, because, you know, drama! But this remains a field that’s wide open spaces, with a placeholder frontrunner in “The Crown” and then a bunch of new shows vying for attention and older series looking to get on the academy’s series radar for the first time. I don’t know what to make of this, except to wait patiently for one or more of those favored limited series to make the jump here. But until that happens, we must prognosticate with the hand we were dealt.

Unlike the HBO drama, which follows the video game storyline, “Fallout” features an original story, putting gamers and non-gamers on equal footing. With a wide-open drama field, the Amazon Prime Video series can definitely land a spot in the series lineup, provided it’s a hit with viewers as expected, but could it go all the way and win?

An attorney representing an investment group that owns some of Paramount’s common stock has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Shari Redstone urging her to stop participating in pre-merger discussions involving Paramount’s board of directors and Skydance Media.
The letter sent on Wednesday came from Aspen Sky Trust, which owns more than 6.5 million shares of Paramount stock, amounting to just over 1 percent of all shares issued. It follows a letter sent to Paramount’s board of directors earlier in the week, in which Aspen Sky Trust expressed concern over the board’s decision to hold exclusive pre-merger discussions with Skydance Media for 30 days, while apparently ignoring other offers made by Apollo Global Management and Allen Media Group.
Those offers could be more-lucrative for Paramount’s shareholders like Aspen Sky Trust, the...

Last week, the Netflix streaming service released Ripley, a limited series adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Talented Mr. Ripley that sees Andrew Scott taking on the title role. (You can read our review Here). Tom Ripley is a character who has been fascinating readers and viewers for decades, as he was at the center of multiple novels written by Highsmith. Ripley was originally set up Showtime, where Schindler’s List Oscar winner Steven Zaillian – who wrote and directed all eight episodes of Ripley – was planning to use all of the Ripley novels as “a road map to showcase Ripley’s transformation from con artist to serial killer” over the course of an on-going series. Now that Ripley has made its way out into the world on Netflix, Scott and Zaillian have both said that it’s possible the show could return for more seasons that could adapt more of the books…...

Sinclair Broadcast Group says it will use artificial intelligence (AI) to translate some of its tennis coverage into Spanish.
Machine learning tools will first be used for the Tennis Channel’s series “Petko Unfiltered,” hosted by former German professional tennis player and network analyst Andrea Petkovic.
The show airs in several European countries on regional variants of the Tennis Channel, with translated episodes debuting in Spain later this year. The same episodes air on T2, Sinclair’s tennis-focused free, ad-supported streaming television channel, in the United States.
The translations will be produced by HeyGen, an AI-focused video company that specializes in translation and lip-synchronization services, Sinclair said in a press release on Tuesday.
HeyGen will not only provide translations in Spanish: The video production firm can also change Petkovic’s facial expressions, so they match the translated speech that is overlaid as an audio track.

In 2024, the acclaimed novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley, was adapted once again for the screen as an 8-part series on Netflix titled Ripley. However, it was the 1999 movie adaptation that first captivated Hollywood audiences and propelled an already rising Matt Damon to new heights of fame. The film also ignited the careers of Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, leaving a lasting legacy as a gripping crime thriller. Matt Damon‘s portrayal of the complex and charismatic Tom Ripley, who becomes ensnared in a web of lies and deceit, garnered widespread critical acclaim and solidified his reputation as a versatile

In Patricia Highsmith’s novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” Dickie Greenleaf’s father asks Tom if he’s ever read Henry James’ novel “The Ambassadors.” The reference is a sly one; James’ 1903 book is about a man sent from the Northeast to Paris to bring back a wayward son. That’s Tom’s mission, as well, though his European transformation is starkly different from James’ Lewis Lambert Strether, who ultimately returns to America wiser but sadder.
Tom intends no such return, and who could blame him when he sets up house in a palazzo as magnificent as the one in Steven Zaillian’s Netflix adaptation “Ripley.” “Who died?” his frenemy Marge (Dakota Fanning) quips when she first sees it; the answer is, of course, Dickie Greenleaf, but Tom pretends it was the aunt who raised him.
“In 2005, I did the film ‘Casanova,’ directed by Lasse Hallström,” “Ripley” production designer David Gropman told IndieWire.
