Each year, the amfAR Gala is one of the biggest celebrity-studded and exclusive black-tie events during the Cannes Film Festival. Always held on the last Thursday of the festival, the evening brings together notable names and those with thick wallets to raise money for AIDS research and HIV prevention, treatment, education and advocacy. This year, the 30th edition of the gala — held at Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc — started off with cocktails and the red carpet, then a dinner and live auction.
Among the glittering stars attending the gala were Michelle Yeoh, Heidi Klum, Andie MacDowell, Diane Kruger, Colman Domingo, Maria Bakalova, Odell Beckham, Jr., Tommy and Dee Hilfiger, Paris Jackson, Magic Johnson, Coco Rocha, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, Bella Thorne, Julian Lennon and more.

Forget about all the studio-thrown premiere after-parties at prior Cannes, from Paramount’s Rocketman with Elton John performing at the beach, and Warner Bros’ Elvis which touted a King of Rock ‘n’ Roll drone show. amfAR’s annual gala, this year counting 30 years, blew them all away, capped off early Friday Am by a mind-blowing mini-concert by Cher who got the crowd on its feet after a four-hour auction with such hits as “Believe” and “If I Could Turn Back Time” and covers of Abba’s “Waterloo” and Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis”. Vocally and in regards to sheer stage dynamic, Cher, at 78, is a force to be reckoned with; delivering a truly unforgettable pitch-perfect performance.

Which performance received the best reviews at Cannes? Cher managed to conquer this year’s film festival even without appearing on screen.
At 12:30 a.m. in the South of France, decked out in a dazzling sequined purple pantsuit, Cher took the stage at Cannes amfAR, the charity gala devoted to raising money for research for HIV and AIDS. “I thought you guys would be drunk, but obviously you’re not,” Cher said after performing an acoustic rendition of “Walking in Memphis,” the Marc Cohn ballad she covered on her 1995 album “It’s a Man’s World,” that had hundreds of guests cheering her on.
Three songs later — and one costume change into a black sparkling jacket over couture negligee — Cher had emerged victorious. The crowd at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc would have given her the biggest standing ovation of Cannes, except they never sat during her 15-minute set.

Murder Syndicate opens with Isa driving her car and dealing with her three squabbling offspring, Cain, Becca and Jonah.
But this isn’t some suburban soccer mom taking her kids to school. She’s the head of a criminal syndicate and they’re professional assassins on the way to a job. A job that almost fails when Isa mysteriously collapses. Isa’s boyfriend Zane turns up in time to get them to safety but it’s obvious something is wrong. And that sign of weakness at the top sets a battle for control of the operation into motion.

On the face of things, not the most inspiring of titles for a mystery/sci-fi/horror movie but there is sense in the title, at least after you’ve seen it. We see a couple move into a new house, despite reservations from close family. Although details seem brief, the wife is dying and they believe the house might be able to help in some way but the house has other ideas.
This is a very low-budget movie but this is only really clear because of the lack of any kind of effects (bar one small moment) or locations. This is not a bad thing though, the filmmakers – none more so than writer and director Scott Eggleston – clearly have a good idea for a script and have made it despite having no budget.

The war in Ukraine was top of mind at Friday night’s Core gala, where founder Sean Penn raised funds for the nonprofit’s crisis response efforts around the world in front of a powerful room including President Bill Clinton, Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti and stars Sharon Stone and Patrick Stewart.
Core sends teams into the world’s biggest disaster zones to provide aid and assistance, including Haiti after its 2010 earthquake and Ukraine after the Russian invasion.
In addition to raising money, Penn, an active leader in the organization, has spent months in disaster zones and was recently warned to leave the Ukraine, where he was filming a documentary because he was too close to the fighting.
When asked about his dedication to these causes, Stone told The Hollywood Reporter at the L.A. event, “Sean has a vocation. That’s different than a cause.

It was the 75th anniversary of the Cannes Film Festival this year and certainly the fest itself thought that alone was cause for celebration, and they did exactly that, but they were not the only ones with reason to party. As the pandemic cancelled the 2020 fest, and downsized the 2021 fest, there was definitely a feeling that it was time to party again in Cannes, just like it was 2019 all over again. And that certainly was the vibe when amFAR returned to form Thursday night, making money to benefit the continuing fight against AIDS, even if it seems that the cause has been overshadowed by Covid in recent times. amFAR chairmen T. Ryan Greenawalt and Kevin McClatchy made the point that while many countries were doing better, others weren’t, and they offered the troubling statistic that still there are 2,000 AIDS-related deaths every day, and 4,000 new infections daily.

The Handler is the latest film from writer/director Michael Matteo Rossi, a name that might not be familiar to some but a filmmaker who has slowly been chipping away at the industry, honing his craft and – usually – crafting films that are at least interesting, if not always successful. As is the case with this film – which is an interesting action movie that, on a surface level, will please fans of frantic action, excessive violence and a bit of gore. However, the deeper story needs some work.
Told in a series of flashbacks, The Handler follows Ryker Dune (Chris Levine) who, in the present, is holed up in a house which is under invasion from assassin after assassin – men, women, guns, knives, feet, fists, nothing is spared trying to kill Ryker. Why?...
