Formula One is, at root, a set of rules. An evolving specification for competition, a set of constraints. Like those of chess, or the Marquis of Queensbury, they are a framework for rivalries, for triumphs, for tragedies.
Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi were, briefly, team-mates at Ferrari. Across five chapters, their forenames, 'Passion', '1982', and 'Discovery', we see how their paths crossed, fatefully, and then fatally. Glossy and well constructed, it is not an easy watch. That in part because it features footage of three accidents involving its eponymous subjects. Those earn it a BBFC 12A rating for 'upsetting scenes', and while I agree with that conclusion I don't think they merited inclusion. To see men battered and bruised in the aftermath is distressing enough, but footage of their accidents feels exploitative. Two of them occured during practice or qualifying, so are unlikely to have been broadcast live.

For Villeneuve Pironi director Torquil Jones, capturing the stories of sports legends and those who live on the edge is standard practice.
In the last half-decade, the filmmaker has been behind stories about Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja who sought to conquer 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in seven months (14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible); Australian comedian Adam Hills’ creation of the globe’s first disabled rugby league team (Take His Legs); as well as the life and legacy of the late English football manager Sir Bobby Robson (Bobby Robson: More Than a Manager).
But despite the obvious similarities to his latest doc — their focus on sports, legacy and a man’s effort to achieve previously unreached heights — Jones’ inside look at Formula 1 racing legends Didier Pironi and Gilles Villeneuve, their fast lives and fast ends is something different.

Sky Studios has signed a development deal with Be Water producer Dorothy Street Pictures to co-produce a slate of high-end series and feature docs mainly told from the female gaze.
The projects that arise from the partnership will target Sky’s factual channels across Europe and Sky’s owner Comcast’s distributor NBCUniversal will take a first-look option for global distribution.
Sky said the pair already have a number of titles in development, with commissioned titles expected to be announced over the coming months.
The deal is similar in scope to Sky Studios’ tie-up with Finding Jack Charlton producer Noah Media, which recently unveiled its debut project about the rivalry between F1 drivers Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi.
Dorothy Street is run by CEO Julia Nottingham and was behind last year’s ESPN 30 for 30 doc Be Water about Bruce Lee, along with Apple TV+’s ‘Twas The Fight Before Christmas...

Exclusive: A feature doc on one of Formula 1’s most dramatic moments, the row between Ferrari drivers Gilles Villeneuve and Didier Pironi, is the first project to emerge from Finding Jack Charlton producer Noah Media and Sky Studios’ multi-year partnership, with F1 driver Mark Webber set to exec produce.
Villeneuve & Pironi will focus on an intense two-week period in the early 1980s that became known as ‘The Betrayal.’ The film will feature interviews with those closest to the two men, with premiere date set for late next year.
The teammates were both aiming to win the 1982 F1 World Title but, during the final laps of that year’s San Marino Grand Prix, Pironi passed Villeneuve to win the race while Villeneuve believed the two had been instructed to slow down. This was an unexpected act that went completely against the team orders Villeneuve thought they were obeying and they never spoke again.
