Thanks to Prisoners and Sicario, director Denis Villeneuve has struck up quite the impressive streak with the esteemed Roger Deakins, an award-winning cinematographer who has worked on everything from The Shawshank Redemption to No Country for Old Men.
Alas, scheduling conflicts meant that Villeneuve had to elect a new director of photography for Arrival, and ended up turning to the up-and-coming Bradford Young. Deakins may leave big boots to fill, but based on early reviews for next month’s sci-fi pic, Young has crafted a unique viewing experience for Arrival that is as haunting as it is beautiful. Such a feat didn’t go unnoticed either, after he was elected Dp of Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s upcoming Han Solo anthology movie.

Bradford Young, the cinematographer best known for his work across Arrival and the critically-adorned Selma, has boarded Disney’s Han Solo spinoff as director of photography.
First reported by The Film Stage, this is the first tangible tidbit to surface for Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s origin story in some time, and further proof that, although Disney and Lucasfilm are mere months away from launching the first Star Wars Anthology film in Rogue One, both parties are quietly assembling the necessary pieces as their vision for a grand cinematic universe begins to coalesce.
And though ticking off the cinematographer check box isn’t a coup likely to steal headlines left, right and center, Young is a fine candidate to shoot a Star Wars movie based on his stellar, diverse track record. Soon after overseeing production on Ain’t Them Bodies Saints three years ago, the prolific Dp executed the...

As audiences witnessed with the phenomenal end credits of 22 Jump Street, it appeared as though filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller shot themselves in the foot as to what they could possibly do for a third installment. Well, we may have an answer that pretty much outdoes everything seen in those end credits. Apparently among the heap of Sony emails leaked, a third Jump Street might find Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum crossing into the world of Men In Black. While there were little...

Chris Pratt is tall. But not as tall as Will Arnett. They greeted each other warmly in the back courtyard of Bricksburg, the former Funny or Die offices on Seward in the heart of old Hollywood, where Warner Bros. threw an awards cocktail party for "The Lego Movie." The two actors didn't actually interact that much playing Emmet and Batman, respectively, while making the animated movie, which has since turned into a surprise blockbuster and Oscar frontrunner--although directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord did get them together to riff in the sound booth a few times. That's the loneliness of the animated voice artist. Pratt is looking sleek and genial as he anticipates not only a solid run in the Marvel universe--after being anxious anticipating the fate of "Guardians of the Galaxy" (which has landed on the Oscar VFX shortlist and will be up for more technical nods)--but the...

When 21 Jump Street came out it had little expectations. A reboot of a heavily dated late 80’s television program that will be directed by people who never made a live-action film before?—surely it will fail. Not only did it not fail it was both a critical and financial smash hit. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller took the ridiculousness of the reboot and used it in their favor by making it an updated meta spoof on Hollywood’s need to reboot everything. Now the question becomes, can they do it again?

Lego Justice League has released its first trailer.
Warner Bros Animation has offered a first look at Lego Justice League vs Bizarro League.
The feature centres around the accidental duplication of Batman, Wonder Woman and their allies into intellectually and physically inverted 'Bizarro' versions.

DC Comics heroes made well-received cameos in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's Lego Movie, voiced by Will Arnett, Cobie Smulders, Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.
The voice cast for the new feature has not been announced.

The Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill buddy comedy hit 22 Jump Street is being re-released by Sony on October 24, in a distribution and marketing move that is kind of odd, given that the film is now at $191M domestically and $137.4M internationally. Usually this is done to reach some kind of box office benchmark, but given that it’s already at $328.4M worldwide and is unlikely to make another $9M domestically, it has us scratching our heads. The DVD comes out on October 28th so why would you re-release it into theaters four days before?
According to one Sony exec, “It’s essentially a promotional run, a chance for audiences to see the No. 1 comedy of the year on the big screen before its home entertainment launch. Not trying to hit any milestone per se. Always good for audiences to enjoy together before home entertainment kicks in.” Okaaay. I still don’t get it.

When Sony nabbed the rights to Graeme Simison’s novel The Rosie Project in April, the studio naturally went on the hunt for big names to adapt the popular book. It now has some top-level talent engaged for the film version, with 22 Jump Street’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller working with The Fault In Our Stars writing duo Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber to develop it.Landing the Lego Movie directors for development purposes isn’t yet a sure-fire guarantee that they’ll end up directing it, but they’re certainly interested in Simison’s book, which the author gets first crack at adapting. Simison was an It consultant who took a chance in his 50s on becoming a screenwriter and novelist, to rousing success. He will push through the process with the Fault scribblers tackling the next draft of the script. It sounds like something both teams...

Exclusive: The benefit of paying big for a hot book is that sometimes it draws the top-drawer talent. Sony Pictures optioned screen rights to the global breakout Graeme Simsion novel The Rosie Project for Sony-based producers Matt Tolmach and Michael Costigan, and the studio now has the 22 Jump Street and Lego Movie team of Phil Lord & Christopher Miller developing the book to potentially direct, and the (500) Days Of Summer and The Fault In Our Stars scribes Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber set to turn the book into a script. This is remarkable progress, considering it was April when the deal was closed by Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad and production president Hannah Minghella. The author took the first pass at the script, and Simon & Schuster publishes his book in the U.S. next month.

23 Jump Street is officially in the works. Sony Pictures and Original Film have hired Rodney Rothman, who was one of the writers who scripted 22 Jump Street, to pen the script.
It's still unclear if directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will be back to helm the next sequel. But Deadline reports that Lord and Miller are on as producers, along with Neal Moritz, Hill and Tatum. Word is that the directing job is theirs if they want it, and that makes sense, after all they made two highly successful comedies.
The last film ended with a montage of future sequels that was very funny. Alas, the joke turned out to be true in some way. 22 Jump Street grossed $320 million on a $50 million budget, so it's no surprise that another sequel is in the works.

Following the huge success of 22 Jump Street, Sony has put 23 Jump Street into motion....
Now this should be interesting. Without giving too much away for those who haven't yet seen it, 22 Jump Street took great glee in sabotaging future ideas for the series in its glorious end credits sequence. And whilst a third film was joked about earlier in the film itself, those brilliant credits happily poked holes at the mere idea of a further adventure for Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill's characters.
Naturally enough, then, there's another one coming.
23 Jump Street is now an active project at Sony, and the studio has recruited Rodney Rothman - who co-wrote the last film - to come up with a screenplay. Directorial team Chris Miller and Phil Lord, the pair who have helmed both movies to date, are overseeing that script. Whether they return to direct is far less certain.

Deadline reports that Sony is working on a followup to their smash hits 21 and 22 Jump Street titled — you guessed it! — 23 Jump Street. While the 22 Jump Street credit sequence made it seem like the filmmakers thought the idea of another sequel was ridiculous, the movie’s $320 million gross clearly nudged them in the other direction. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who helmed the previous iterations, have signed on to produce, but no word yet on whether they’ll be back to direct. Tatum and Hill’s involvement is also unknown. Anyway, if things keep going at this rate, it looks like 34 Jump Street: Return of the Ghost and 43 Jump Street: Mariachi School might not be such far-fetched possibilities after all.

Looks like that "22 Jump Street" post-credits montage wasn't a joke. Sony is putting a third film in the Channing Tatum-Jonah Hill comedy franchise into motion, hiring "22" writer Rodney Rothman to write the screenplay, according to Deadline. There's no word yet on whether directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will return at the helm, however. "22 Jump Street" ended with a montage poking fun at the idea of a third (and a fourth, and a hundredth) film in the series, but after grossing nearly $320 million worldwide a second sequel is a no-brainer for the studio. The studio has hired writer Rodney Rothman, who was one of the four credited writers on 22 Jump Street. It’s unclear at this point whether directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will helm the threequel, but they are already onboard as producers.

I never thought I'd been excited about the fact that there is going to be a 23 Jump Street, but I am! 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street were both hilariously awesome, and the fact that we will see a third movie is exciting.
The last movie ended with Ice Cube's Captain Dickson saying to Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's Schmidt and Jenko, "You two sons of bitches are going to medical school!" The film then teased more than twenty funny, faux sequels.

The end of 22 Jump Street featured a montage of possibly future adventures for Channing Tatum’s Jenko and Jonah Hill’s Schmidt, as Captain Dickson (Ice Cube) announced they were off to medical school next (and to about sixteen other establishments of learning after that). There’s no word yet on whether that will indeed form the plot, but a second sequel is now in development, with Rodney Rothman hired to write the script for 23 Jump Street.22 Jump Street has now made $320 million worldwide, so it was inevitable that Sony would want to leap back into that well. In many ways, Phil Lord and Chris Miller's 22 Jump Street is kind of an ode to just how dumb sequels are. Operating as a successful satire, the movie is almost entirely made up of meta commentary about how flawed the system of Hollywood sequels really is. And even if you missed all of that during the actual movie, the final sequence of the film is literally just a barrage of bad sequel ideas paraded one after the other. The movie seemed to take a very firm stance that it would be the end of the franchise... but apparently that message didn't get through to the people at Sony Pictures Deadline's sources have learned that Rodney Rothman, one of the writers on 22 Jump Street, has been hired by Sony and Original Film to write a screenplay for 23 Jump Street. The success of the Channing Tatum-Jonah Hill buddy cop sequel, 22 Jump Street, made another outing inevitable. Who’s gonna argue with a box office return that’d lift most countries out of debt? On a teeny-tiny $50 million budget, it grossed almost $320 million worldwide. That’s not to be sniffed at. Sony Pictures and Original Film, the labels behind the franchise, clearly agree as development on a third entry, 23 Jump Street progressed a millimetre further today.

And probably going at his first draft with a red Sharpie. Also returning to produce are stars Tatum and Hill and original producer,...

Exclusive: Sony Pictures, MGM and Original Film have started forward motion on 23 Jump Street. They’ve set Rodney Rothman to write the script. Rothman was one of the writers who scripted 22 Jump Street for Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. The big question is whether Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will be back to direct the third film. I can report that they are overseeing the script with Rothman as producers on the third film with Neal Moritz, Hill and Tatum. The directing job is theirs if they want it, but insiders said they haven’t committed to direct at this point.
The last film ended with a montage of future sequels that was humorous, but when the second installment of your film grosses $320 million on a $50 million budget, another installment is inevitable.
UTA reps Rothman.

★★★☆☆It's time to play the music. It's time to light the lights. Everyone's favourite felt-made, hand-operated, chaos-beleaguered variety act is back. Following the surprise success of the 2011 reboot, its follow-up - Muppets Most Wanted (2014) - reaches DVD and Blu-ray this week in a slicker, vaster, if marginally less satisfying caper. Just as Phil Lord and Christopher Miller's 22 Jump Street (2014) made a wryly meta song and dance about how sequels are never as good as the originals, the Muppets make an actual song and dance routine on the same theme. "All we need is a half-decent plot," Kermit opines candidly and a half-decent plot is exactly what they get here. But will more potentially follow?...

There's been much back and forth about the supposed third installment in the "Ghostbusters" franchise. If there was ever a time to do it, it'd probably be now -- this year marks the original film's 30th anniversary (and the sequel's 25th anniversary, for all those fans of evil paintings) and there's clearly interest there, what with the traveling Gallery 1988 art show and an upcoming Blu-ray box set of the two films, re-mastered and stuffed with special features. But nobody's quite gotten a handle on what the film should be, and, more importantly, who should direct it. But it looks like Sony might have finally nailed down both.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sony has zeroed in on a filmmaker that they are keen on shepherding the franchise with: Paul Feig, the director of "Bridesmaids" and "The Heat" (for what it's worth he also happens to be the nicest human currently...

Picking the best movies that come out in any given year is no easy feat. For film fans, a quality feature can come out at any time, from any one, and discovering an enjoyable and well-crafted feature is truly a pleasure. As we reach the halfway point of the year, many excellent films have already made their way to theatres, films that are well worth a watch. Below, you shall find the list of the top 30 films of 2014 to date, a list that ranges from science fiction thrillers to period dramas.
A few notes to keep in mind when reading our entry: Certain films from our 2013 list make a second appearance on this list. This is because the movies, while technically released this year, were seen by a select few in time for last year’s list, due to the benefit of film festivals and press screenings. The list itself is in no particular order,...

It seems like a minor miracle that 22 Jump Street is as good as it is, seeing as it’s a sequel to a reboot that few people thought sounded like a good idea in the first place. Then again, projects that sound questionable on paper have become kind of a specialty for directors Phil Lord […]

I probably shouldn’t be as excited as I am about the idea of Joel and Ethan Coen directing Channing Tatum in their new film Hail Caesar!. And yet here we are. After Tatum’s gigs with Phil Lord and Chris Miller, not to mention his work with Steven Soderbergh, I can’t wait to see what the […]

It is that time again as 2014 is already half over. Wow, time flies when you are watching movies. The year being half over brings my annual, “Top 10 Movies of the Year…So Far” list, and without question this is my strongest list by a long shot. One big reason is the increase of great titles that have been released On Demand. Half of my list in fact is made up of films I saw On Demand. Now I am all for supporting your local Art House Theater as much as possible, but certain films don’t make it outside of La and New York so On Demand is a great tool to experience some great Independent movies. I feel like geek culture is far too obsessed with franchises that stick to the same format over and over again. I enjoy franchise movies as well, as you will see on this list,...

For whatever reason, logical or illogical, there always seems to be the philosophy that bigger is always better…its not by the way. That logic though, seems to be the dominant force when it comes to creating a sequel to your previously massive hit. What’s amazing though, is when movies take on this logic, more often than not; they never end up being as good or as profitable as its predecessor. But yet, everyone continues to follow this trend. Take for example the recently released trailer for Dumb & Dumber To. I will admit I laughed a couple of times during the trailer, but it’s painfully clear they are taking this approach and that’s not what made the first one so successful and beloved. 21 Jump Street shocked a few people, including myself,...

Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis is the latest writer to work on the script for Ghostbusters 3. The news comes a few days after Phil Lord and Chris Miller were offered a chance to direct the project and passed on it.
The news comes from Nikki Finke, whose source tells her, "Landis probably is doing more of a ‘polish’ than a Page 1 rewrite." Another said that they're "not huge changes, but could be cool." Sony Pictures brought him in after they watched some of his upcoming film Victor Frankenstein and apparently loved it.
The report goes on to say that the executives at the studio are happy with the script, and they believe that "all the parts are there, as in beats, structural mechanics, etc, but they’re not all doing their jobs." They are also going to try one more time to convince Bill Murray to reprise his role as Peter Venkman…...

The best movie culture writing from around the internet-o-sphere. There will be a quiz later. Just leave a tab open for us, will ya? “The Smart Dumb Films of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller” — Jake Cole at Movie Mezzanine looks at two enthusiastic creators who are able to spin idiocy into smart, subtle comedy (and delicious churros). “22 Jump Street, naturally, makes copious jokes at the expense of sequels themselves, making fun of how they simply replicate formulas. The film thus becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: by foregrounding jokes about sequels never striving to do anything different, it never stretches the boundaries set for itself by its predecessor. Explicit references to red herrings, repeated arcs and minuscule deviations in character abound, absolving the film of the responsibility of having to do anything to break out of those stifling restrictions. The buddy film also tries to comment on the sort of casually homophobic humor that infests any movie about male...

In short the answer to that question is a solid yes. 22 Jump Street keeps with the tradition of the first film,...

21 Jump Street was an unexpected hit back in 2012, while the sequel has taken the box office by storm both in the UK and in North America this past weekend. Though directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller poked fun at potential sequels during the end credits, it’s undoubtedly one of Sony’s top franchises right now.
However, Let’s Be Cops looks like it has the potential to be a legitimate rival to the police focused cop comedy franchise, albeit in a very different way. Starring New Girl actors Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr., the movie focuses on two friends who take fancy dress too far when they start masquerading as police.
As you might expect, hijinks ensue, and Let’s Be Cops looks like a whole lot of fun!

Phil Lord and Chris Miller.s 22 Jump Street is as much a follow-up to 21 Jump Street as it is a movie about how Hollywood actually treats and develops sequels. Playing in the same field as Gremlins 2: The New Batch and Airplane 2: The Sequel, the film never misses an opportunity to make some kind of meta gag or reference, be it the fancy new headquarters that can be afforded thanks to an increased budget or the fact that Jenko and Schmidt have to track down the source of yet another synthetic drug because of how well things worked out last time. These jokes are sprinkled liberally through the entire thing and earn their laughs, but one would be hard pressed to argue that the funniest of them all comes at the very end. I am, of course, talking about the end credits sequence. Spoiler Warning: The following will not...

Cut To The Chase Reviews from Cof are spoiler free reviews ‘abridged for your pleasure’. Quick, concise, and sometimes entertaining opinions on the go!
When I reviewed 21 Jump Street I said it was “smart to embrace everything we love and should hate about TV shows and movies”. With 22 Jump Street, it manages to do the same for sequels with Phil Lord and Chris Miller proving to be the best comedy directors working today. There’s even more the bromance to love and over the top action sequences to laugh along with.
It’s because of its good natured humor and subsequent vulgarity that 22 Jump Street outshines the first installment. This movie knows about sequels and does everything it can to point out how cheap and familiar this movie Could feel; it side steps that pressure with a brilliant self-aware attitude, comedic timing, and a the chemistry from its leads that can’t be matched.

In keeping with the meta theme of “22 Jump Street” Sony Pictures has released a version of the film's trailer featuring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's stand-ins. Ivan Hoey Jr. (funny name!) served as Hill's stand-in, and a pretty good one at that, while Brad Cookus served as Tatum's stand-in, though we doubt anyone would mistake him for the “Magic Mike” star in real life. 22 Jump Street is the follow-up to the hugely successful 21 Jump Street (2012) that earned over $200 million at the box office on a budget of only $20 million. Since show business is a business, this sequel was no surprise to anyone.
The film was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – same as the previous entry. They certainly keep this film moving along at a similar brisk clip here for the most part. The hijinks and hilarity are very similar to the last film – but more on that later. 22 Jump Street was written by Michael Bacall, who wrote the prior film, along with Oren Uziel and Rodney Rothman who both have limited credits until now. Clearly, the goal here was to pretty much keep the same team and playbook in place.
The film opens with partners, Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill), about to make a bust. The bust goes badly and...

Phil Lord and Chris Miller continue their expectation-defying run with this week’s release of 22 Jump Street. When the pair directed the big-screen reboot/update/comedic riff on the early Fox TV show 21 Jump Street, the very concept seemed like a joke. But stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill turned out to be a perfect pair. […]
