Nicolas Cage is going to star in the upcoming independent horror film titled Longlegs. While the film looks very modern, it’s actually a throwback to one Old Hollywood icon. Interestingly the director of Longlegs has a major connection to the icon in question.
Nicolas Cage’s ‘Longlegs’ was inspired by 1 of the best directors ever
Longlegs will be directed by Oz Perkins. So far, Perkins is most famous for his films I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House and Gretel & Hansel. During a 2020 interview with Polygon, Perkins discussed Longlegs, saying it was inspired by the work of cinematic legend Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock is remembered for horror films and thrillers such as Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window, Vertigo, and North by Northwest. His movies often have good humor and a psychosexual subtext. Hitchcock might be the most acclaimed director of all time, with Stanley Kubrick being his only real rival.

An important thing to keep in mind when evaluating any work of art is that the audience and critical response can change a ton over the years. Such was the case with "Vertigo," the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock thriller that is now rightly recognized as one of the best films ever made, and a career-high for Hitchcock himself. It's a dark, provocative film, one with a lot of fascinating things to say about love and obsession. It's also a remarkably well-directed movie; every single cinematic choice (like filming the driving scenes so Scottie (James Stewart) is almost always driving downhill, never up) contributes to the sense that Scottie is descending towards his doom.
Still, at the time of its release, "Vertigo" received mixed reviews and had a disappointing run at the box office. Contemporary critics declared the film's big twist to be nonsensical, and Hitchcock himself seemed to agree with this, at...

The DC/Vertigo comics draw significant inspiration from world mythology, adding an intriguing layer to their stories. DC has borrowed elements from Greek mythology, such as the Olympian gods and the Amazons, while also incorporating Lucifer from Christian theology. Similarly, Vertigo has drawn from Sumerian and Jewish mythology with Lilith and Inuit beliefs with Sedna. This amalgamation of mythological elements appeals to readers who appreciate the ability to draw parallels and explore these rich cultural narratives through the lens of their favorite fandoms. The incorporation of mythologies from diverse cultures into the DC universe taps into our innate fascination with these ancient tales. It allows readers to delve deeper into the stories, recognizing familiar elements and drawing connections, ultimately fostering a greater appreciation for the mythological roots behind these stories.

"Batman: The Animated Series" has many artistic fathers. Tim Burton's 1989 "Batman" film, of course, but also the Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons of the 1940s, the Art Deco movement (which the skyscrapers of Gotham City are made in the visage of), and film noir.
Noir is a film genre characterized by dark high-contrast shadows ("noir" means "black" in French) shot in black-and-white, featuring urban settings, crime (whether the lead is on the wrong or right side of the law), beautiful but duplicitous women, and nefarious schemes gone awry. Noir sprouted up in the 1930s-40s, when most films were black-and-white and pulp novels, from thrillers and to detective stories, were easy fodder for Hollywood adaptations. The storytelling motifs of those books were thus intertwined with Hollywood's biting black-and-white style.

Deadline has reported that Paramount Pictures is developing a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo. The psychological thriller is considered by many to be not only one of Hitchcock’s finest movies, but one of the best of all time. The project does have some star power behind it, as Robert Downey Jr. is eyeing the leading role of the former police detective forced to retire after an incident in the line of duty causes him to develop acrophobia and vertigo.
The Vertigo remake is set to be scripted by Steven Knight, the Peaky Blinders creator who recently signed on to write the new Star Wars movie. Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey will produce the remake through their Team Downey banner, alongside John Davis and John Fox of Davis Entertainment. The original 1958 film starred Jimmy Stewart as John ‘Scottie’ Ferguson, a former detective obsessed with the hauntingly beautiful woman he was hired to investigate.

Welcome to the Ghostface Glossary, a guide to every horror reference and nod throughout the first five films of the Scream franchise.
After a lot of pausing, rewinding, and zooming in, as well as researching, we’re catching all of the many horror-specific references Williamson, Craven, and Co. included in this beloved postmodern slasher franchise. If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.
This guide will exclude homages from previous Scream films and their respective sequels— we’re only looking at outside horror franchises and inspirations, because any red-blooded Ghostface fan is likely already aware of those. (Goes without saying that the beloved faux franchise ‘Stab’(s) 1-8 will also not be counted, since, even though our neon green ‘Stab’ t-shirts and mock VHS tapes feel very real, it’s still a very fake franchise). If we’ve forgotten any glaring ones, kindly let us know.

James Mangold may be trading in his whip for a trip to swamp country.
Mangold, who has Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hitting theaters in May, is in early talks to be one of the first writer-directors to join James Gunn and Peter Safran’s roster of filmmakers at DC Studios.
Mangold is in discussions with the Warner Bros. arm to take on the feature adaptation of Swamp Thing, the supernatural horror-based hero who is a focal point in the first chapter of DC Studios’ slate.
Gunn and Safran unveiled their slate Tuesday. Swamp Thing was the last of the 10 projects talked about and was tonally the darkest. The executives didn’t mention Mangold at the time, as sources say that talks are still in the early stages.
Still, Mangold on Tuesday night tweeted a simple (but moody and poetic) image of Swamp Thing, drawn by co-creator Bernie Wrightson.

Ever since the early days of film, horror fans have been comparing and contrasting the scariest moments of our favorite movies. We love to share the specific scenes that get under our skin, hoping that we’re not the only ones afraid to turn out the lights. Ranking these moments also gives us a sense of accomplishment and we compare and contrast to find the films that test us the most. If we can watch the scariest moments imaginable and come out the other side, we might just be brave enough to take on the real world.
Before Bravo became known for chronicling the sagas of housewives, the network attempted to solidify this hierarchy with a formal list of the most frightening moments film has to offer. From way back in 2004, Bravo’s The 100 Scariest Movie Moments is a mix of interviews, clips, and anecdotes that justify a 100 entry list...

Bong Joon-ho may be the national hero for bringing home the Oscar for Parasite, but it was Park Chan-wook who first blazed the trail for Korean cinema. After two false starts, his international career began in earnest in 2000 with Berlinale hit Joint Security Area (J.S.A), a military thriller set in the no-man’s land between North and South Korea. In the years since, Director Park has been a quicksilver talent, never repeating himself and bringing savagely original twists to genres as diverse as the vampire movie (Thirst), the erotic thriller (Handmaiden) and manga (Oldboy). His latest, Decision to Leave, is no exception, a perversely modern and yet classically Hitchcockian whodunnit, in which Park Hae-il’s obsessive detective Hae-joon falls hard for his suspect (Tang Wei).

The Marvel Cinematic Universe will officially enter its fifth phase with "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" in February. After that, we'll know, barring final adjustments, the rough shape of this arc. Along with the rise of Kang (Jonathan Majors), we'll see stories focused on new kinds of paranoia. Captain America's "New World Order" is an ominous phrase to any conspiracy theorist and a version of the comic event "Secret Invasion," which saw villainous shape-shifting Skrulls throw the world into chaos.
But those aren't the only stories to come out of this phase. Kang's story is just the beginning, with his dynasty on the rise from 2024 onward. Even with all we know about this coming phase, there'll be surprises. Who will be our new faves from Agatha Harkness' (Kathryn Hahn) "Coven of Chaos?" What mysterious cameos will come from Daredevil's return in "Born Again"? We know a few upcoming characters,...

"Vertigo" is the kind of movie that lends itself to any interpretation you want to throw at it. Its multi-layered narrative has all kinds of things to say about love, madness, and obsession — particularly of the male variety. But what makes the film especially noteworthy in comparison to Hitch's other work, is how he so boldly confronts what one reviewer called his own "thematic and personal sexual fixations."
Hitchcock is known for obsessing over every aspect of his films. But he saved his most pedantic fixation for his actresses, who he seemed to revel in controlling. In the case of "The Birds" star Tippi Hedren, the director made the poor woman's life miserable. And his onscreen treatment of women wasn't much better. The heroines of Hitchcock movies are often little more than representations of the director's own myopic view of females. They're at once conniving and helpless — caught in the...

For a long time, "Vertigo" was consigned to the vault. Once the rights to Hitchcock's masterpiece reverted back to the director in the '60s, he kept the film under lock and key right up until his death in 1980. Universal then got their hands on the rights and in the 1990s decided "Vertigo" was due an overhaul.
The studio set about restoring the 1958 classic to its former glory via an in-depth process that involved creating new negatives in 35mm and 65mm and reportedly finding original elements of the film in the US, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Along with the visual restoration, Hitchcock's dreamy tale of obsession and madness also got a full, and controversial, audio overhaul. As former head of Universal Classics, James C. Katz, recounted upon the 1996 release of the restored movie, both the score and dialogue were given a digital stereo remaster alongside a newly recorded Foley track.

The push and pull of a Sight and Sound crown: if a film’s greatness becomes received wisdom in ways previously never possible—where even an Alfred Hitchcock movie starring Jimmy Stewart receives new forms of attention—the film itself invariably becomes embalmed, a single object of study before it’s the work of artists who thought heavily, intently, obsessively about how to make it exist.
Most writing, discussion, and scholarship on Jeanne Dielman considers what’s before us: its rigor, subversions, thrills, boredom. About which there’s endless consideration, needless to say. And none of which begins explaining how a 24-year-old Belgian woman, directing her third feature, rewrote entire swaths of cinema history in her image, nearly five decades hence dethroning Citizen Kane and Vertigo from the closest known claim to greatest film ever made.
An answer, or at least some open door, has been there longer than most...

In the 1990s, Batman was still undergoing a transformation, with Tim Burton's grim "Batman" and "Batman Returns" having altered the perception of the character from his campier Adam West days. Warner Bros. Animation was gearing up to drop a revolutionary take on the hero that would help cement his legacy as the truly gothic and brooding figure of the shadows he was always meant to be. By now, fans probably know the story of how co-creators Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski borrowed from film noir and Burton's movies to create the moody environs of what would become "Batman: The Animated Series." And the late Kevin Conroy, who we sadly lost this year, is famous for his authoritative Batman/Bruce Wayne voice.
But, as Vulture's oral history of the show revealed, there's more to the story of what made the show a success. After all, a dark and moody series...

Some of the greatest Hollywood success stories are the ones that come to fruition against all odds, when Hollywood execs don't realize they're on the ground floor of something extraordinary, pass on an opportunity, and are left to watch as the filmmakers persevere into an absolutely stunning success story. It not only speaks volumes about the industry, but ends up highlighting some of the hardworking individuals that make said success possible. All this to say that it's time to strap in for a story, because the latest addition to the underdog canon has arrived, and it's none other than last month's surprise box office hit, "Barbarian."
If you still haven't seen the film and somehow managed to avoid spoilers, then you should probably rush to your nearest theater immediately. An unpredictable ride from start to finish, "Barbarian" is a movie with more twists and surprises than you could possibly expect,...

The movie considered by many to be Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece was also one of his most difficult productions. "Vertigo" stars Kim Novak as a woman who may or may not be playing multiple roles in a detective's (James Stewart) investigation. In an interview with Francois Truffaut, the "North By Northwest" director reveals that he once had Vera Miles set for "Vertigo," going through wardrobe, makeup, and several screen tests with her. Miles had previously worked with Hitchcock on the debut episode of his "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV series, followed by his 1956 noir "The Wrong Man" — part of the three-picture deal she signed with the director's Alfred J. Hitchcock production label. She would gain fame as Marion Crane's intrepid sister Lila in Hitchcock's "Psycho" in 1960, but it was her descent into madness in "The Wrong Man" that made her a strong candidate for the role of Madeleine Elster — the...

Vertigo Releasing has acquired Phyllis Nagy’s “Call Jane,” starring Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver, for U.K. and Ireland distribution.
The film explores the true story of the Janes, an underground collective of women, who in Chicago during the 1960s, came together to secretly provide nearly 12,000 women and girls with safe and secure abortions. It follows Joy (Banks), a suburban wife, and mother to a smart teenage daughter, whose happy life is derailed when her much wanted pregnancy becomes life threatening.
The cast also includes Chris Messina and Kate Mara.
The film had a stellar festival run, including play dates at Sundance and Berlin. It is written by Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi and produced by Robbie Brenner, David Wulf and Kevin McKeon.
Reviewing the film for Variety, critic Peter Debruge wrote: “The female empowerment message comes through loud and clear in ‘Call Jane,’ especially in Banks’ performance.”

This article contains The Boys Season 3 “Herogasm” spoilers
All year, Eric Kripke and the producers of The Boys have been hyping up “Herogasm” as the most shocking episode of season three, a bold claim given the season premiere. “Herogasm” takes its title from a six-issue miniseries spinoff from The Boys comic, one that followed a Vought-sponsored orgy filled with even more nastiness than found in the mainline series.
Make no mistake, the television adaptation has plenty of surprising moments, including an extended (pun intended) look at Love Sausage’s powers and the return of Termite, the shape-changing Supe responsible for that season opener. Mere hours after “Herogasm” dropped on Amazon Prime Video, fans took to Twitter to make sense of what they saw, registering everything from their sympathies for The Deep actor Chace Crawford, who performed a love scene with an octopus, to praising the show’s parody of Gal Gadot’s tone-deaf “Imagine” video.

Pedro Almodóvar can be an exacting taskmaster, but even he broke down during a pivotal scene in his autobiographical drama “Pain and Glory.” The Oscar-winning Spanish auteur likes to read with his actors on their close-ups. But when he tried to speak the lines of his mother, he couldn’t do it. For Antonio Banderas, who won Best Actor at Cannes for this role modeled on the director, that was red meat. “Ok, you cannot give better information to an actor,” he said. “Fucking give me ‘action,’ because I have it.”
Banderas struggled with his return to acting with his mentor after 22 years with 2011 psychothriller “The Skin I Live In.” Nonetheless he eagerly took on “Pain and Glory,” playing the aging auteur who gave him a career launchpad with films like “Labyrinth of Passion” (1982) and, most famously, “Tie Me Up! Amazon Studios has greenlit new drama “The Expatriates” from Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films, two seasons of horror event series “Them” from Lena Waithe, and a new comedy from “The Office’s” Greg Daniels, entitled “Upload.”
“The Expatriates” is based on the best-selling novel by Janice Y.K Lee and award-winning screenwriter Alice Bell. And after announcing a first-look deal with Blossom Films earlier this summer, Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said they are “thrilled” to kick off the relationship by bringing this story to life.
“The story weaves an addictive tapestry that follows a group of complex women and their lives as outsiders in Hong Kong. It’s a compelling exploration of the strength of these women as they persevere through struggles with marriage, career, parenting and unimaginable loss,” Salke said.
Kidman added that she, too, was thrilled about this collaboration. “‘The Expatriates’ is just the beginning of...

Watch out Ryan Murphy — Lena Waithe has some American horror stories of her own to tell. The Emmy-winning writer is executive producing “Them,” a new anthology series for Amazon Prime Video that received a two-season order Saturday afternoon.
Written by Little Martin, the first season, entitled “Them: Covenant,” is described as follows:
Set in 1953, Alfred and Lucky Emory decide to move their family from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood. The family’s home on a tree lined, seemingly idyllic street becomes ground zero where malevolent forces both real and supernatural threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them.
“Little Marvin’s script stayed with me for weeks after I read it,” Waithe said in a statement. “He’s written something that’s provocative and terrifying. The first season will speak to how frightening it was to be black in 1953. It will also remind us that being black in 2018 is just as horrifying.
