With more than 70 schools offering costume design instruction, what makes such a program stand out? Is it the proximity to film studios and theaters in the major entertainment hubs of L.A., London and New York? The variety of courses, from historical design to 3D fabric printing, or simply a well-rounded curriculum? Or is it the chance to network with award-winning alums and industry insiders, coupled with portfolio development and postgrad job placement?
Whatever the consideration, students, as soon-to-be narrative storytellers, face an ever-changing field with digital design technology at the forefront as the industry tries to figure out what to do with the practice of artificial intelligence. Season 2 of “Girls5eva” has even more hilarious, catchy tunes than Season 1, but if you listen closely they’re not quite the same. With the titular girl group being in album mode and recording their first LP in 20 years for the Property Brothers‘ Property Records, their new songs had to take on a different vibe, according to composer and executive producer Jeff Richmond.
“Last season, we were in this place where we were bringing this girl group back from the late 1990s and the 2000s, so we knew that we’d be visiting a lot of music from that time period,” Richmond tells Gold Derby (watch above). “So we could go into TLC and Spice Girls and all these kind of familiar but old songs and iconic kind of songs, and the jokes that we would have back in those days, which were all these kind of girl power, empowerment kind...

Takisha Sturdivant and Ande Yung, “Girls5eva’s” hair and makeup department heads, had never worked together before Season 2 of the Peacock comedy, but they quickly became in sync. “This is the first time working with Takisha and I have to say it was so much fun. We had such a great time, but with performances, with this cast, it’s hard not to. They were fantastic,” Yung tells Gold Derby in an interview with Sturdivant (watch the exclusive video interview above). “We started talking before we even started shooting. We’re both very easygoing, I would say… I think we’re both professionals, we know what we’re doing, we have a vision, and we just went for it.”
Yung, who had previously worked on “30 Rock,” joined in Season 2 — “After I watched Season 1, I was like, ‘I am in! I can’t wait to get my hands on this and just do this,...

Between its music videos, flashbacks, performances and hilarious heightened version of showbiz, “Girls5eva” seems like a fun playground for any costume designer to play in. For Matthew Hemesath, who took over for Tina Nigro in Season 2, it was his dream job. “I was already a fan of the show before I was hired to do Season 2. And I just knew it was my dream job, so I begged them to hire me, basically,” he tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “What was so wonderful about it was that the show was already fabulous. Season 1 was great. I didn’t feel like there needed to be any fixing. It was just taking these characters further and just building on what had already been done and watching it grown. And it also was exciting to put my own stamp on their look – things that I love like a lot of color,...
