On August 10, after more than a four-year hiatus, Prime India’s “Made in Heaven” returned for a second season. Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti’s series earned critical acclaim and a loyal audience after its debut, praised for authentic portrayals of the Indian elite, class struggles, patriarchy, and queerness. In the series, Sobhita Dhulipala and Arjun Mathur star as Tara and Karan, best friends and business partners running a wedding planning agency called Made in Heaven. Each episode focuses on a different wedding, couple, and behind-the-scenes drama mitigated by the Made in Heaven staff while navigating their own problems.
Season 2 brought back the winsome cast and sharp direction to tackle a new crop of extravagant (and fictitious) weddings, all within the real-life context of colorism, polygamy, abuse, and more. Episode 5, “The Heart Skipped a Beat,” deals with an inter-caste marriage, a prospect which initially excited author and activist Yashica Dutt.

Indian web series “Made In Heaven” is the talk of the town for exploring the opulence and the dogmas of Indian society through seven exceptional stories.
But more than that, the show is applauded for a unique casting – Tinetra Haldar.
Haldar joins the team of wedding planners led by Sobhita Dhulipala’s Tara and Arjun Mathur’s Karan in the second season. Haldar, as Meher, is arguably the first trans woman cast in a recurring role in a mainstream Indian series.
Regarding onboarding Trinetra, showrunner Zoya Akhtar tells Et Canada, “Our casting directors found her on Instagram. She’s a doctor. We didn’t really know if she could act or if she’d want to act. Controversy‘Made in Heaven’ makers Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, Alankrita Shrivastava, and Neeraj Ghaywan said they were “deeply disturbed” by the “misleading reports and comments,” after Yashica Dutt sought formal credit on the show.Days after Coming Out as Dalit author Yashica Dutt accused filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan of appropriating her story for an episode in the popular web series Made in Heaven and sought formal credit for her contribution, makers of the show took to social media on Thursday, August 16, to state that they were “deeply disturbed” with the “misleading reports and comments.” They went on to cite several Dalit authors whose works have inspired the episode, including Yashica Dutt, Sujatha Gidla, Suraj Yengde, and Sumit Baudh. Notably, however, in a previous post Neeraj shared on Instagram, he had specifically mentioned Yashica as an inspiration for a scene that forms a crucial part of the episode. CasteIn an interview with Tnm, author Yashica Dutt says that while Neeraj Ghaywan’s episode is path-breaking in its representation of Dalit women on screen, it is also pertinent for her to speak up for herself. When season 2 of the Hindi series Made in Heaven dropped on Amazon Prime Video recently, many lauded the episode by well-known Dalit filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan. Yet, very soon the showmakers were mired in controversy about appropriation and failing to give credit where it was due. Starring Radhika Apte, the episode titled ‘The Heart Skipped a Beat’ drew the widespread praise of those in the anti-caste movement. The love story in the episode fiercely brings to light how caste underpins all human experiences, including romance and marriage. Radhika plays Pallavi Menke, a Dalit scholar and author who writes a book about ‘coming out’ about her caste identity. While the story is a powerful one, many...

ControversyRadhika Apte’s character Pallavi in Made in Heaven’s episode 5, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, is evidently inspired by Yashica Dutt, at least partly. Yashica Dutt, author of Coming out as Dalit, has accused Neeraj Ghaywan of erasing her contribution in the popular show Made in Heaven, Season 2, streaming on Amazon Prime Video. In Episode 5 - ‘The heart skipped a beat’, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, also a Dalit, Radhika Apte plays the role of Pallavi Menke, an accomplished Dalit who gets into an inter-caste wedding and struggles to have a Buddhist wedding ceremony, by unabashedly embracing her Dalit identity. This particular episode is generating a lot of discussion on social media about how Dalits are finally getting a good representation in Television without any dehumanizing atrocities against them. Foreword
Web series on streaming platforms have warranted a far more emotional investment both for actors in the cast and from the viewers who would try and get involved in the characters. Their sequels, however, are rarely as engrossing as the original first season of episodic developments. And for the same reason, I, for one, am a tad sceptical about watching successive seasons with as much enthusiasm as I am for the preceding ones. Unless it is ‘Made In Heaven’.
Made in Heaven Season 2
This series is a compelling watch and though there isn’t anything spectacularly novel about its storyline, the production values, immaculate writing and superb acting by the entire cast makes it riveting. It represents what present-day India is all about. Conservative on the one hand and modern in many ways with progressive mindsets of traditional people who face conflicting ideas to deal with at every step.

While, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ is his most unanimously loved film, the director has often said that the film has changed his life but not for good because people now watch all his films with the imprint of ‘GoW’ on their minds, something that Kashyap considers a disadvantage and an injustice to his films that have come after ‘GoW’.
The director recently spoke with Ians about the film which was released in two parts, back in 2012.
Anurag, who started his career with ‘Satya’ (he shared the screenwriting credits with Saurabh Shukla), said that he always tried to make something which is radically different from his past works.

Lust Stories 2(Netflix)
Lost in lust, or perhaps the hit lust… such mischievous descriptions spring to mind as we watch an extremely sexual Grandma in Balki’s story played by Neena Gupta about whom her screen-son Ayushman Khurrana had famously said she doesn’t give those “Maa wali vibes”.
Here in the second part of Lust Stories, Gupta gives herself a gala time as a grandmom counselling her grandchild Mrunal Thakur(who giggles her way through her perky part) to have sex with her fiancée(Angad Bedi looking visibly uncomfortable with barely six lines to speak) before marrying him.
Horny Granma’s logic is, “Even when you buy car you first test-drive it.” Right.
I have never come across a grandma like Gupta in R Balki’s warm and well-meaning segment in this four-part saga where one story, like Neeraj Ghaywan’s Geeli Pucchi in the Karan Johar anthology...

Vicky Kaushal spilled some beans about how he bagged his film ‘Masaan’ and revealed that he was not the first choice for the film. Taking a trip down memory lane, Vicky said: “This dates back to 2010 when I wanted to become an actor and Neeraj Ghaywan wanted to pursue direction. We both started our journey together as assistant directors in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur.’
“So, post that I started doing theatre to enhance my acting skills. In 2013, we met again while travelling to Pune and we started talking about life and work.”
“During the conversation, I got to know that he is making a film and is in search of a producer but is struggling with it. He then shared that he has made a pilot promo on the film with Rajkumar Rao. Owing to Masaan’s tight budget, they could not create a mela, but had to wait to shoot a real one.

Unpaused Naya Safar(Amazon Prime Video, Anthology Of 5 Stories)
To paraphrase a beloved pop songs of the 1970s: “All You Get From Covid Is Covid Cinema”.
Luckily for us Unpaused Naya Safar is not only well worth our time and attention, this five-tiered omnibus is better more sensitively designed than the first season that came in 2020. Unpaused Naya Safar actually constitutes 4 stories of varying merit, and one outright masterpiece.
Quite like Neeraj Ghaywan’s Geeli Pucchi in the anthology Ajeeb Dastaans, Nagraj Manjule’s Vaikunth in Unpaused is so far ahead of the other four segments it deserved a full feature-length treatment. It’s like the Amitabh Bachchan of the anthology towering above the rest with its razorsharp brilliance and acute insight into human nature during stressful times. An aching darkness spreads over the story as the film’s protagonist , a cremator in a crematorium who suddenly has a full...

The conventional Hindi film heroine is often one-dimensional, impossibly perfect and confined to song and dance routines. A few films in the recent past have however challenged these notions on the big screen as well as on Ott platforms by portraying women in all their depth and complexity. Here are a few of such memorable characters.
Upasana in ‘Axone’
Upasana (Sayani Gupta) is part of the North-Eastern migrant community in Delhi. Her body language and habitual diffidence show how guarded and vulnerable she feels in a milieu that treats her and her friends as outsiders. Yet, as the film progresses, we see Upasana dealing with her love life, her conflicted feelings about a friend who was in a relationship with her boyfriend and her own insecurities with increasing confidence. Her determination to cook a special dish to celebrate a wedding finally wins the day and her innocence and strength endear...

Opinion Growing up as a Dalit, queer woman myself, I have never come across a story or a character that I could relate to.Megha MalakarScreenshot/Netflix"I relate so much to this character", " I felt she was a perfect portrayal of me", "That is exactly what my family is like". Such responses are what we often hear or feel after we watch a film that we can relate to. However, ever since I started watching movies, I don't remember being able to say any of these. That is, until I watched Neeraj Ghaywan’s Geeli Pucchi, the third film in the Netflix anthology Ajeeb Daastaans. In Indian media, be it Bollywood or regional films, there has always been a domination of certain kinds of people. Be it the director, actor, cinematographer — they mostly come from privileged sections of the society. Hence, their way of telling a story can never...

This is a diverse provocative(sometimes too consciously so) bouquet of stories of four women in search of an emotional and physical fulfillment that eludes them because…well, they have obligations. Don’t we all!
Uneven in quality, some of the plotting conceits verge on the absurd. To begin with, let’s take the first story Majnu directed by Shashank Khaitan. It is a passionless passion-tale about a marriage of convenience between a moneyed dangerous criminal Babloo(Jaideep Ahlawat) and Lipashi(Fatima Sana Sheikh). The film opens with one of Babloo’s henchman making a preposterous pass at his Bhabhaiji, and never recovers its equilibrium.

Entertainment While ‘Geeli Pucchi’ and ‘Ankahi’ make an impact, ‘Khilauna’ and ‘Majnu’ end up being shockingly bad.Saraswati DatarScreenshotAjeeb Daastaans, an anthology of four short films, is a strange combination of two really good films and two that make films my classmates made in college seem great. Directors Shashank Khaitaan, Raj Mehta, Neeraj Ghaywan and Kayoze Irani are at the helm of four stories Majnu, Khilauna, Geeli Pucchi and Ankahi. The premise or rather promise is that each story brings a shocking, horrifying and/or heartbreaking twist in the tale we never saw coming. Mumbai, Sep 5 (Ians) Pankaj Tripathi turned 44 on Saturday. The versatile actor has explored every medium as an actor -- theatre, television, films and Ott -- and has made a mark in a relatively short span of time.
On the occasion of his birthday, Ians looks at five much appreciated performance of Tripathi that can counted as milestones in his career so far.

After a 10 year run and becoming the largest annual Indian film event in Europe, the festival team were challenged on how to present the four city festival this June.
