Look, despite the title, it's not exactly a mystery that Marvel's "Secret Invasion" all but crashed and burned upon release on Disney+ earlier this year. I would know, since I had to recap those episodes on a weekly basis! By far the most critically-savaged streaming series that the studio has ever released (not to mention a finale that somehow reached even lower lows), even the most diehard fans felt thrown off by a haphazard and aimless plot that meandered its way towards an anticlimactic ending, a head-scratching adaptation of a seminal comic book storyline, and the pervasive feeling that Emilia Clarke and Kingsley Ben-Adir were wasting their talents week in and week out. Oh, and of course, there was also the visual of Clarke's stubby Drax arm that instantly became a meme. It was a lot, folks.
What we didn't realize at the time, however, was just how deeply...

Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, gets her powers entangled with those of fellow heroes Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan in the second trailer for The Marvels, which has dropped just in time to generate Comic-Con buzz.
The sequel’s first trailer had Larson joined by Iman Vellani, the breakout of the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel in the role of Kamala Khan, as well as Teyonah Parris as the grown-up version of Captain Marvel character Monica Rambeau, as they join forces to save the universe.
But the official trailer gives more clues as to why the unlikely trio must join hands as The Marvels, as we learn more about the film’s archvillain, Zawe Ashton’s Dar-Benn. Having secured a powerful bracelet, she appears bent on revenge as Dar-Benn scrambles the light-based powers of Danvers, Rambeau and Khan.

While Marvel Studios may not have a Comic-Con panel this year, the studio is taking advantage of the timing of the event to drop a brand new trailer for the “Captain Marvel” sequel “The Marvels.”
Directed by Nia DaCosta (“Candyman”), the story finds Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers beset by challenges as a figure from her past (played by Zawe Ashton) threatens to destroy everything she loves. Complicating matters is the fact that Carol, her estranged niece Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and the young Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) get their powers intertwined — every time one of them uses their powers, they switch places with one of the others.
The cast for the MCU film also includes Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur and Saagar Shaikh, with Samuel L. Jackson returning as Nick Fury following the Disney+ limited series “Secret Invasion.”

Los Angeles, June 27 (Ians) The espionage thriller series ‘Secret Invasion’ shows a newer version of former S.H.I.E.L.D director ‘Nick Fury’, who has finally gotten his own show. However, it is not at all pleasant because as the show explores more of Nick Fury’s character, his growing age is something that is heavily focused upon as characters, including his closest allies have not shied away from calling him out on his dustiness.
Speaking about the character,SamuelL.Jacksonsaid, “He’s older and he’s tired. He’s not sure of his footing anymore. He’s been sort of incognito and up there on S.A.B.E.R. for years, and it’s so long since he’s been in touch with people. He’s ghosted a lot of people, and so when they call him, he’s not coming back down to Earth super willingly.

The recently-released streaming series ‘Secret Invasion’ boasts of a subversive tone which is a trademark of Marvel. While describing the show, director Ali Selim said, “I think that the series has a really interesting subversive Marvel tone that takes it and flips it on its head, which I think will challenge, surprise and please the audience and give them something unique and different.”
Elaborating on the story, Ali said, “It goes back to Nick Fury. It’s the Nick story. And Nick is a human. Whatever we think about his trench coat and his eyepatch and how cool Sam Jackson is, Nick Fury is a human. He’s a human with a certain kind of power, but not a superpower like Captain America or Captain Marvel. So, that immediately demands a more grounded, gritty series.”

Samuel L. Jackson has been a fixture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the end of 2008’s “Iron Man,” when Nick Fury stepped out of the shadows to tell Tony Stark he wasn’t the world’s only superhero. In the 15 years since “Iron Man” helped change the face of the entire film industry, Jackson has appeared as Fury in 11 Marvel films – with No. 12, “The Marvels,” set to debut later this year – and multiple television projects, including this month’s Disney+ limited series “Secret Invasion.”
But despite his many adventures as the S.H.I.E.L.D. boss, Jackson hasn’t been in every Marvel film – and it’s something that has left the acclaimed actor and Oscar nominee slightly perplexed.
“I don’t know, it’s kind of up and down for me in an interesting sort of way,” Jackson told Entertainment Tonight. “Feels like I’ve been playing him forever.

If you’ve ever seen a Marvel film, you know Nick Fury. He’s the spy of all spies, the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D, the mastermind creator behind the Avengers and over the course of several films, he’s always managed to maintain a certain air of mystery. He’s played by the inimitable Samuel L. Jackson in a black, leather trench coat and trademark eyepatch, first appearing in Jon Favreau’s 2008 Iron Man.
Now, Jackson takes center stage in Disney+’s six-episode miniseries Secret Invasion. This time around, Fury forgoes the eyepatch, showing off his scarred eye, and according to Jackson, he’s not as unshakeable as he once was.
“[He’s] older, a little tired, not as confident as he used to be,” the actor told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s Tuesday evening premiere. “You find out where he lives! Does he live in a condo?...

Expect to see a different side of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury in Secret Invasion.
It’s been a while since audiences have seen the former Director of S.H.I.E.L.D, who last appeared aboard a spaceship in the post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Far From Home. In Secret Invasion, he’s finally returning to Earth to help thwart an invasion from a faction of rebel Skrull, the alien race that has been searching for a new homeland since their planet Skrullos was destroyed.
“At one point in the series, Nick realizes this is his own battle for different reasons,” director Ali Selim told Deadline at the Secret Invasion Los Angeles premiere. “It’s less about vanquishing the bad guy and more about defending the moral code that Nick Fury has developed throughout the MCU. In a way, he’s the only being in the universe that can defend that moral code.

Disney+ has unveiled the first trailer for Marvel’s “Secret Invasion,” a six-episode limited series that brings the real Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time since “Avengers: Endgame.”
“Fury, since you’ve been gone, things have gotten so much worse,” Skrull leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) says in the new teaser. Responds Fury, “Why do you think I came back?”
Fury and Talos have a history dating back to the events of “Captain Marvel,” when Fury promised Talos and the Skrulls he’d help the displaced, shapeshifting alien race to find a new home. The pair connected again, albeit in a clandestine fashion in “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” That film, which debuted just after “Avengers: Endgame,” featured a heavy dose of “Nick Fury,” but it wasn’t actually Nick Fury. 15 years after he launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the post-credits scene of “Iron Man,” Samuel L. Jackson will get to take center stage as Nick Fury in the upcoming Disney+ series “Secret Invasion,” which just released a new trailer on Sunday. Disney also announced that the show will premiere on June 21.
As MCU fans saw with “Captain Marvel” in 2019, Nick Fury has had an alien ally for decades in Talos (Ben Mendelson), the leader of a sect of aliens called Skrulls who have taken refuge on Earth after their homeworld was destroyed.
But as seen in the new trailer, that sect is becoming a threat thanks to rogue Skrull named Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), who has formed his own group apart from Talos and believes the best way for the Skrulls to survive is to use their shapeshifting powers to infiltrate Earth’s government and take what they need.

As anticipation builds for new Marvel’s “Secret Invasion”, more information is emerging about the upcoming Disney+ series.
Starring Samuel L. Jackson and Cobie Smulders, “Secret Invasion” finds Fury heading a covert mission after discovering that shape-shifting Skrulls (the alien race introduced in “Captain Marvel”) have secretly infiltrated all levels of human society in plans of taking over the planet from within.
Also starring in the series are “Game of Thrones” alum and former “The Crown” star Olivia Colman, and a new feature on the show in Vanity Fair reveals they’ll be playing characters on opposite sides of the conflict.
Clarke plays G’iah, daughter of Skrull commander Talos, played by Ben Mendelsohn. As Jackson pointed out, this isn’t the character’s first appearance in the MCU. “Remember when Ben was there with his wife and daughter?” Jackson said. “She’s the little Skrull girl grown up. She’s his daughter.

Marvel fans hoping “Secret Invasion” would storm this year’s Emmy Awards race received some disappointment this week when it was revealed the limited series will debut on June 21, outside the 2023 eligibility window. But, fortunately, the cone of silence around the project itself was lifted on Friday, when Vanity Fair published first-look photos from the series as well as key details about some of it characters.
As revealed by Vanity Fair, four-time Emmy Award nominee Emilia Clarke will play a character familiar to Marvel Cinematic Universe obsessives: the “Game of Thrones” actress is G’iah, a Skrull and the grown daughter of Talas (Ben Mendelsohn). G’iah appeared as a child in “Captain Marvel.”
“She’s a refugee kid who’s had Talos for a dad, you know what I mean? Maybe the fact that we didn’t know he had a kid up until this point tells you everything...

Samuel L Jackson's Nick Fury is a complicated figure. On one hand, he's definitely committed his fair share of war crimes, but on the other, the former S.H.I.E.L.D. leader has been saving the world since before the Avengers were even formed. Later on, by bringing the Earth's mightiest defenders together, he ensured that a team of heroes would be lying in wait for all the Thanos-sized problems bound to emerge from the depths of space.
There have been some considerable complications since then: the squad is short one Iron Man, is in the process of replacing their Captain America, permanently lost their Black Widow, and Hawkeye is too busy renovating stuff to rejoin the heroic effort. But there are always heroes waiting to be called upon. After all, Fury still has Spider-Man and Captain Marvel on speed dial. He has pull with all the...

Marvel Studios continue developing Marvel Comics "Power Pack" for the 'Marvel Cinematic Universe', with Jonathan Schwartz, executive producer on "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" overseeing the project, described as a "Spy Kids"–like superhero story":
"For many years we wanted to do something for families, something that's a little younger,", said Marvel Studios' Chief Creative Officer, Kevin Feige.
" 'Ant-Man' has kind of become that franchise, certainly with 'Ant-Man and the Wasp', but 'Power Pack' still is one of many things we discuss..."
Created by writer Louise Simonson and illustrator June Brigman, Marvel's "Power Pack" #1 (May 1984), was the first team of preteen superheroes in the 'Marvel Universe'.
The title was relaunched in 2005 for younger readers.
"...'Alex', 'Julie', 'Jack' and 'Katie Power' are four normal kids whose scientist father discovered an efficient and ecologically clean power generator, with a potential downside of destroying the planet. "The...

Many mainstream romantic comedies are so predictable a robot could write them. Some unlucky-in-love woman cannot find a husband (despite looking like a supermodel and having a glamorous job), so a condescending guy helps her become more appealing in order to attract Mr. Right. Eventually, it turns out the condescending guy was Mr. Right all along, and the woman is blessedly saved from the ninth circle of Female Hell: spinsterhood. Katy Perry plays over the credits.
For an antidote to this formula, look no further than “I Want You Back,” where the characters and the world they inhabit are both refreshingly mundane, and the film is all the funnier for it.
“I Want You Back” sports a cast and crew destined for comedic success: Screenwriters Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger are no strangers to the subversive rom-com, and capable directing and editing by Jason Orley (“Big Time Adolescence”) and Jonathan Schwartz (“Stuber”), respectively,...

When in a romantic relationship, it’s never a good time to break up, nor to be the one getting dumped. The hilarious cold open of director Jason Orley’s rom-com “I Want You Back” begins with much promise, highlighting the indignities of the separate but equally humiliating fracturing of our two protagonists’ long-term loves. And while the premise of these two broken-hearted strangers finding each other and hatching a foolhardy scheme to win back their exes is quick to ramp up, the midsection plateaus when it should percolate with the pair’s plan taking form, or rather not quite manifesting correctly. Still, despite some pacing issues and predictable plotlines, the film keeps us wholeheartedly engaged with well-drawn, well-performed characters, grounded shenanigans and sweet, sentimental commentary on heartache.

While Disney+ Day made a splash in its Marvel special on the streamer with footage from Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and Moon Knight, in the slightest of hands during and end-sequence of logo flashes were shots of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and what looks to be Queen Veranke from the upcoming new Secret Invasion series.
Secret Invasion was first announced at Disney Investor last December and follows the team-up of Avengers Boss Fury with Captain Marvel‘s Skrull Talos played by Ben Mendelsohn. At the center of the show is a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.
The epilogue sequences from Spider-Man: Far From Home and WandaVision were tee-offs for Secret Invasion. One of the mid-credits sequences from Far From Home showed that Fury and Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) were really Skrulls, Talos and Soren. So, at the end of the day it wasn...

Marvel Studios' next Disney+ series is underway. "Secret Invasion," which centers on shapeshifting alien creatures called Skrulls infiltrating Earth, has begun production – at least, according to one of its biggest stars. Samuel L. Jackson, who will reprise his role as former S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury, shared a photo from the set today which indicates that cameras are actually rolling on the show, which was officially announced by producer Kevin Feige in December of last year.
When I spoke with "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" producer Jonathan Schwartz in early September, he told me he was already in London working on "Secret Invasion," a project that he teased will be "very cool" and...

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” kicked off its box office in Thursday night previews by making $8.8 million from screenings beginning at 6 p.m. It opens on 4,300 screens over the long Labor Day holiday weekend.
“Shang-Chi” is projected for a $40 million start, which would be well below the opening of the last Marvel movie, “Black Widow,” but would be big enough to surpass the record for a movie opening on the long Labor Day holiday weekend, the previous record being just $30.5 million in 2007 across the four days. And “Shang-Chi’s” Thursday start is the second highest total of the pandemic behind only “Black Widow,” which made $13.2 million back in July.

Before becoming a full-fledged producer on Marvel Studios' "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," Jonathan Schwartz worked as Kevin Feige's assistant before quickly rising up the ranks to creative executive in time for "The Avengers" in 2012. He went on to co-produce the first "Guardians of the Galaxy," executive produce "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and "Captain Marvel," and as we discussed in an interview earlier today, he's currently overseeing several projects at the studio, working as part of a brain trust alongside Feige and several other top Marvel execs.
