Looking at director Gregory Hoblit’s filmography, it’s hard to not notice this man has a type and it’s not just movies starting with the letter F. Hoblit worked in the bygone era of original dramatic thrillers with storylines that occasionally bumped elbows with the horror genre. None more so than his 1996 feature debut, Primal Fear.
The film followed seemingly conscience free hot shot defense lawyer with an axe to grind, Martin Vail (Richard Gere). Vail takes on the case of altar boy Aaron (Edward Norton), who’s caught damn near red handed having allegedly brutally murdered a Catholic archbishop. Vail takes on the case because he knows it will give him the attention he craves and thereby another middle finger to the establishment that he feels wronged him. In other words, he’s driven by more than is on the surface but less than a noble cause.

Da’Vine Joy Randoph is remembering her harrowing “near-death” experience witnessing a robbery while enjoying a dim sum meal with her friend. The Holdovers star said she fled for the restaurant’s kitchen because “they’ve got knives.”
Randolph recalled the story during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show on Friday. She said her “back was to the door” during an “amazing dim sum brunch” when “I hear this kerfuffle, and I see people rushing in, so my brain’s life, ‘Is this a flash mob?'”
“But I was like, ‘Um, that’s not a trend anymore,'” Randolph continued. “We haven’t done that in a long time.”
While she was looking at the door, her friend disappeared from the table. “Then people started screaming,” Randolph said. “So then my brain’s like, ‘Something’s going on.'”

“The Incredible Hulk” director Louis Leterrier was the first guest on the new “Happy Sad Confused” spinoff series “Watchalong” and he got frank while discussing his 2008 comic book movie. The film, which starred Edward Norton as Bruce Banner and the Hulk, was the second movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but its critical and commercial reception nosedived compared to “Iron Man,” which opened a month before. “The Incredible Hulk” only grossed $264 million worldwide, a sharp decline from “Iron Man’s” $585 million.
It’s well known by now that Marvel scrapped all the follow-up plans it had for Norton continuing as Hulk. He was later replaced by Mark Ruffalo. Norton clashed with Marvel during the making of the film, with Leterrier saying that the movie’s tone was perhaps the biggest point of contention.
“The whole way, everybody was in lock step. It just got tense at the end,” the director remembered.

Kenneth Branagh’s second Agatha Christie film Death on the Nile, did not have a smooth ride. Its release was delayed several times due to first Disney buying the studio that made the film, 20th Century Fox, and then the Covid pandemic, and its cast turned out to be a Pandora’s Box of, at best, bad PR and at worst, criminal allegations.
Back in 2020 then, when Branagh was filming his autobiographically inspired family drama, Belfast, a third Hercule Poirot film wasn’t necessarily a given. Though Agatha Christie’s estate and Branagh were keen to make further sequels to 2017 hit Murder on the Orient Express, the next Christie movie had yet to be greenlit.
That uncertainty inspired Branagh to tuck a Poirot Easter Egg into Belfast as “an offering to the gods,” as he told The Hollywood Reporter. “They can tell us, in the end, if we’ll be allowed to make it.

Javier Bardem, winner of a San Sebastian 2023 Donostia Award for career achievement, is putting back his on-stage acceptance of the distinction until the 2024 San Sebastian Film Festival.
The postponement is due to the “limits imposed under the strike called by the U.S. Actors Union (SAG-AFTRA),” the San Sebastian Festival announced Friday.
It deprives this year’s Festival of its biggest on-stage major star moment this year.
The fest will, however, enjoy its customary bullish presence of world-class auteurs, led this year by Claire Denis, main competition jury chair, and Victor Erice, will accept his Donostia Award on Sept. 29. San Sebastian announced Friday that Hayao Miyazaki will also accept a Donostia Award online.
Gabriel Byrne, François Cluzet, Emmanuelle Devos, Griffin Dunne, Aidan Gillen, Mads Mikkelsen, James Norton and Dominic West have confirmed their attendance, Byrne and Gillen for one of the festival’s biggest tickets, James Marsh’s official selection closing film “Dance First.

David Fincher is one of the most acclaimed and influential filmmakers of our time, but he has not always received a warm reception from critics and audiences. In fact, one of his most celebrated films, “Fight Club”, was booed and denounced as fascist when it premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 1999. However, Fincher returned to Venice in 2023 with his latest film, “The Killer”, and received a very different reaction: a five-minute standing ovation.
“The Killer” is a Netflix adaptation of a graphic novel by Matz and Luc Jacamon, starring Michael Fassbender as a cold-blooded assassin who becomes a target himself. The film is a stylish and violent thriller that showcases Fincher’s mastery of visual storytelling and dark humor. The film was screened out of competition at the 78th Venice Film Festival, where it received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Apparently, the fourth time’s a charm for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law head writer Jessica Gao.
Marvel Studios’ latest Disney+ series, centering on Jen Walters’ (Tatiana Maslany) transformation into She-Hulk, was the executive producer’s fourth pitch at Marvel. Of the three previous rejections, one of them, for Black Widow, was basically Natasha Romanoff’s version of Grosse Pointe Blank. But those previous misses were actually the best thing that could’ve happened to Gao.
“I just figured, ‘What’s a fourth [rejection]? I’ve got the armor. I don’t care anymore. I’ve got nothing to live for except for this project.’ So the [She-Hulk] show that I pitched to them that day is basically the show that we made,” Gao tells The Hollywood Reporter.
