The Republican convention this week delivered cool optics, sharp reality television and an ominous threat to public health, in the opinion of most media critics.
“A political convention is like a movie trailer; if a party messes up, it will likely mess up the election,” according to Franklin J. Schaffner, a politically savvy filmmaker (Patton) who was also a key adviser to the Democratic Party during its self-demolition in 1968.
The Democratic convention that year is, in fact, the setting for a new movie from another filmmaker, Aaron Sorkin, who became fascinated by “The Year the Democrats Lost Their Mind” – a famous Washington Post headline.
Ironically, the Post ran an almost identical headline about the Republicans in 1948 when, after a bungled convention, that party’s smug, overfunded candidate, Thomas Dewey, lost to underdog Harry S. Truman. “Dewey Defeats Truman,” the classic headline, is also the title of a perceptive new book by A.J. Baime.

The road to “Ford v Ferrari,” the double-Oscar-winning racing drama starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale, was a long one. The project dates back to 2013, when “Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski was attached to lead movie, then called “Go Like Hell” from a book by A.J. Baime. As discussed in a Comic-Con at Home panel hosted by Collider, Kosinski got pretty close to starting the movie, which centers on the saga of American car designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles in 1966, with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. Until things, as they do in Hollywood, fell apart.
“I wouldn’t say we got close to production, but I got to the point where I had Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt at a table read, reading the script together. But we couldn’t get the budget to the number it had to be at, and it was the right number.

As Disney and Fox continue to navigate a still very fresh partnership, Wednesday afternoon’s CinemaCon presentation offered first looks at a handful of films that will now be released under the Disney banner, former Fox properties that have found themselves an unexpected new home. That means that, tucked alongside major tentpole offerings and an increasingly impressive series of live-action remakes, there now live movies like James Mangold’s fact-based racing drama. It’s a new world for everyone, it seems.
Based on A.J. Baime’s book “Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed,” the film has been through various incarnations over the years, and was at one point to be directed by Michael Mann, before being kicked over to Joseph Kosinski with Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise starring. Now, the film stars Matt Damon and Christian Bale, and its take on the wild true story of...

Led by automotive visionary Carroll Shelby and his British driver, Ken Miles, the team is dispatched by Henry Ford II with the mission of building from scratch an entirely new race car, one with the potential to finally defeat the perennially dominant Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans World Championship.
The Mangold movie will open in the heart of summer against Universal’s Chris Pratt action-adventure pic Cowboy Ninja Viking, Paramount’s Tiffany Haddish comedy Limited Partners, and an Untitled Entertainment Studios film.
Logan director Mangold is also set to direct The Force for 20th Century Fox, which has a release date of March 1, 2019.

The Punisher star Jon Bernthal is in negotiations to join Matt Damon and Christian Bale in Fox’s upcoming Ford vs. Ferrari movie. The movie is based on A.J. Baime’s 2010 book Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans, and it's being directed by James Mangold (Logan).
The story follows an "eccentric, determined team of American engineers and designers, led by automotive visionary Carroll Shelby (Damon) and his British driver, Ken Miles (Bale), who are dispatched by Henry Ford II and Iacocca with the mission of building from scratch an entirely new automobile with the potential to finally defeat the perennially dominant Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans World Championship in France."
Bernthal will take on the role of Lee Iacocca, who spearheaded the development of the Ford Mustang. The car debuted in 1964 and it became Ford's most successful launch since the Model A.

It was not a fun experience watching Michael Mann's Blackhat. Not only was it a terrible film, but it was a terrible film from one of my favorite filmmakers, a filmmaker that seems to be moving closer to the lackluster output of Ridley Scott and farther away from the man that made the likes of Collateral, The Insider and Heat. So, just as my interest in Scott's The Martian isn't too high, I can't say I'm all that intrigued when it comes to Mann's next project, which Variety reports is the long-gestating "Ferrari" biopic, about Italian automotive mogul Enzo Ferrari. We first reported on this project back in May 2011 when word was 20th Century Fox would distribute Go Like Hell, a film based on A.J. Baime's "Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans" with a script by Jason Keller...

Michael Mann devotees will likely remember that quite a few years ago, the filmmaker was lining up a movie based on the book"Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans" by A.J. Baime, about the Le Mans battle between Ford and Ferrari in 1966. The project never got off the ground, but it seems Mann hasn't lost his need for speed because he has another car movie he's getting behind the wheel on. Read More: Retrospective: The Films Of Michael Mann Variety reports that Mann will direct a biopic on Enzo Ferrari. The movie will be based on Brock Yates’ book “Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races.” This project has been brewing for a while, with Sydney Pollack once attached to direct with Al Pacino in the lead, over a decade ago. This version will have a script put...

Over four years ago, Brad Pitt was said to be circling Go Like Hell, a racing drama based on the book of the same name by A.J. Baime. However, he fell away from the project and went on to other films. But now it sounds like Pitt is interested again after Tom Cruise and his Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski decided to pick up the project that caught Michael Mann's interest years ago. THR has word that Pitt is being courted to join Cruise in the story about how Henry Ford II, with the help of a young visionary named Lee Iacocca and racing champ turned engineer, Carroll Shelby, concocted a plan to reinvent the Ford company. Read on! Cruise is developing the project with Kosinski as a starring vehicle for himself to play Ford, but it's not clear if Pitt would play Iacocca or Shelby in this film. It...

Brad Pitt might reunite with Tom Cruise for the first time since 1994′s Interview With A Vampire. It looks like Fox is really going after Pitt to star alongside Cruise in the racing drama Go Like Hell, based on A.J. Baime’s book Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari and Their Battle For Speed and Glory at Le Mans.
Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski will direct Go Like Hell, while Cruise is set to play Caroll Shelby.
Based on A.J. Baime’s book Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, And Their Battle For Speed And Glory At Le Mans, the story follows “the decision by Henry Ford II to go against Enzo Ferrari’s dominance on the Le Mans track in 1966. Ford challenged Ferrari with a car designed by racer-turned-car designer Carroll Shelby. It plays out like The Right Stuff on the race track as Ford was able to turn around...

Two decades on, "Interview with a Vampire" co-stars Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise could be re-teaming for the car-racing project "Go Like Hell" at 20th Century Fox.
Cruise and his "Oblivion" director Joseph Kosinski are already set to re-team on the project with Pitt being courted to star alongside Cruise.
An adaptation of A.J. Baime's book, the true story tale deals with the competition between the Ford Motor Company and Italian sports car designer Enzo Ferrari, which culminated at the 1966 Le Mans race.
Cruise would play car designer Carroll Shelby. Pitt was once attached to star in the project back in 2009 and has had talks with the new team on the project.
Cormac and Marianne Wibberley ("National Treasure") are working on a draft which Kosinski is supervising.

The last time that Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise starred in a film together it was 1994′s Interview with the Vampire. Now, nearly 10 years later, it seems as if the two Hollywood titans want to reteam for Joseph Kosinski’s Go Like Hell. Pitt was actually circling the project back in 2009, when Michael Mann was in the director’s seat, and since then he’s kept his interest in the project.
The racing film, based on A.J.
