- He studied at the Curtis Institute as a child prodigy. He won the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation piano competition, leading to a debut recital at Town Hall in Manhattan. He subsequently served in the Army.
- He was a piano virtuoso known for his interpretation of works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Rachmaninoff. He recorded around 20 albums of Chopin and the complete piano works of Ravel for the Vox label, gave as many as 100 recitals and concerts a year, and taught at Indiana University, the Juilliard School, and the University of Houston, where he retired several months before his death.
