As Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe expands, it’s also reportedly contracting. Two films as announced by The Hollywood Reporter will not be moving forward as part of the studio’s DC slate: Ava DuVernay’s tentpole “New Gods” and James Wan’s Aquaman spinoff “The Trench.”
“As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles including New Gods and The Trench will not be moving forward,” Warner Bros. shared in a statement with IndieWire. “We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. Deadline has confirmed that DC Films no longer is developing the properties New Gods, which had Ava DuVernay attached to direct, and Aquaman spinoff The Trench, which Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald were penning for James Wan possibly to helm.
I hear The Trench is shelved due to Wan’s busy schedule with Aquaman 2, while New Gods, created by Jack Kirby, was stopped as the parameters of that project far exceeded a feature stand-alone structure. The Trench, which was to have a horror bent, was based on the creature Aquaman battles.
Warner Bros and DC Films released this statement today in regards to the projects:

It was recently reported that The Conjuring director James Wan is developing a hard R original horror film for New Line Cinema that he will direct. Well, now he’s attached to produce another horror movie through his Atomic Monster production company. It’s called The Troop, and it will be an adaptation of a book written by Nick Cutter.
The movie will follow “a group of teens on a remote camping trip who must fend for themselves when their adult chaperone falls prey to an aggressive otherworldly infection.” This actually sounds like it’ll be a fun horror thriller to watch!
Here’s the official book description:
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip—a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfire. But when an unexpected intruder stumbles upon their campsite—shockingly thin,...

Not long after Aquaman was released, it was announced that WB and DC were developing a spinoff horror film based on the terrifying Trench creatures. I’m actually looking forward to this project and today we have some additional details to share with you regarding it.
The project is being developed by producers James Wan and Peter Safran along with writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. Safran explained in an interview with THR that this is a project that they have been looking at making since the early concept art days of Aquaman.
“We always, even from the early concept art days, loved the idea of a Trench movie. Then, when audiences embraced it in the movie itself the way they did, particularly that ant farm shot where the camera follows the Trench [creatures] following Arthur and Mera down into the deep, we just knew that we had something very special...

Warner Bros. has set the release date for DC’s Aquaman 2, and we are going to have to wait until December 16th, 2022 before we see Aquaman embark on a new adventure.
Not much is known about the film because there isn’t even a completed script for it yet. That script is currently being written by James Wan collaborator David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Wan, of course, will produce, but he has yet to sign on to direct it. Jason Mamoa and Amber Heard will also obviously be back to reprise their roles.
WB is also developing a horror-themed spinoff film called The Trench. That script is being written by Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, and it will be “a horror-tinged script centered on the Trench, the deadly amphibious creatures seen attacking the hero and his love, Mera, in Aquaman.”

As you may have heard already, Aquaman has proven to be a pretty big deal at the box office, raking in more than $1.1 billion worldwide and surpassing The Dark Knight Rises to become the highest-grossing DC movie of all time. It was therefore less than surprising when the news broke last month that Aquaman 2 is in development, and now it seems that Warner Bros. has a date in place for the film’s release.
Deadline reports that Arthur Curry’s second solo movie is scheduled to hit theaters on December 16th, 2022. This suggests a wait of almost four years between the release of the first and second Aquaman films, indicating that Warner has no desire to rush things. In the meantime, we still have much to learn about the follow-up, though it’s been reported that Aquaman cowriter and frequent James Wan collaborator David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick has been tapped to pen the script.

“Aquaman” has grossed $1.12 billion worldwide, becoming Warner Bros.’ first billion-dollar box office hit since “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012. It is also the first billion-dollar release from a studio other than Disney or Universal since “Transformers: Age of Extinction” in 2014.
The road to $1 billion began with the film’s release in China on the first weekend of December, when it opened to a studio-record $94 million.
Warner Bros. did a significant reshuffling of their studio’s DC division after the disappointing results of “Justice League,” which served as Aquaman’s big-screen introduction but only made $657 million worldwide despite also featuring Superman,...

Aquaman is Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing DC film to date, a level of success that few saw coming. James Wan’s movie crossed the $1.12 billion mark over the weekend, so it is unsurprising that Warner Bros. would want to ride that wave as long as possible, but few expected a follow-up to come in the form of a spin-off, let alone one in the horror genre.
On Friday, Heat Vision broke the news that Warner Bros. has hired screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to pen The Trench, a film based on those menacing, sharp-toothed sea-creatures that Aquaman and Mera fought ...

Warners is developing a 'horror-tinged' spin-off to their billion dollar box office hit "Aquaman", focusing on DC Comics' amphibian monsters from the kingdom of the 'Trench', with a screenplay by Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, for producers James Wan and Peter Safran:
The 'Trench', applied to both the kingdom and its inhabitants, escaped the destruction of Atlantis in DC Comics' "Aquaman" (vol. 7) #1 (Nov. 2011) created by Geoff Johns.
DC's "New 52" then rebooted the continuity, with Johns introducing the Trench' into a new timeline, making them antagonists.
"...the 'Trench' had been inhabitants of 'Atlantis' before that continent was destroyed and submerged by 'Atlan', the 'Dead King'. Only three major groups of old Atlantis survived that event, including 'Aquaman' and the 'Atlanteans', the 'Xebelians', in the 'Bermuda Triangle' and the 'Trench', who were thrown deep into the 'Marianas Trench, where they adapted their traits and powers.

While Aquaman may be a superhero movie first and foremost, that didn't stop director James Wan from instilling his own brand of horror into the film, especially in the chilling and breathtaking scene when Aquaman and Mera fought off the voracious creatures from the Trench, who are now the subject of a new spinoff movie that's in development at Warner Bros.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have been hired to write a "horror-tinged" screenplay for a movie focused on the creatures from the Trench.
As viewers of Aquaman and readers of DC Comics (where the monsters first appeared in 2011) know, the amphibious creatures of the Trench were once residents of Atlantis, but became trapped and isolated when the city sunk into the sea, their genetic lines mutating over generations into the sharp-toothed creatures that attack Aquaman and Mera in the 2018 film.

Warner Bros. is developing “The Trench” as a spinoff horror movie to its mega-hit “Aquaman.”
The studio has hired Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to write a script centered on the Trench, the deadly amphibious creatures who attacked Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Mera (Amber Heard) in the movie. The project will be set in the underseas kingdom in the Marianas Trench, where a group of the original inhabitants were sent after Atlantis sunk and evolved into savage monsters.
James Wan and Peter Safran will produce “The Trench,” which is being developed as a lower-cost version of “Aquaman” without the main cast involved. No director or cast is yet attached. The duo collaborated on “Aquaman” and “The Conjuring” with Wan directing and Safran producing.

Newbie screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have been hired to write The Trench, a screenplay that will act as a spinoff of Warner Bros and DC’s Aquaman. This is separate from an inevitable sequel to the original movie, which is awaiting a script that could entice director James Wan to return.
The original Aquaman is a smash hit that has grossed $1.1 billion worldwide to date, surpassing at the tail end of January The Dark Knight Rises as the highest-grossing DC film ever worldwide.
Deadline on Friday confirmed details of The Trench, as originally reported by THR. The film will have a horror-pic slant centered on The Trench, a relatively new creature in DC Comics mythology who appeared briefly in the first film attacking Jason Momoa’s superhero and Amber Heard’s Mera. It will be produced by Wan and Peter Safran, cost less to make than Aquaman and...

An Aquaman spinoff is in development at Warner Bros and it will center around The Trench.
Warner Bros. is thirsty for more Aquaman after the ocean-themed superhero broke through the billion-dollar mark at the box office earlier this year. According to THR, the studio is developing a spinoff that will take audiences back to The Trench, the creepy corner of Aquaman's kingdom full of monsters.
The movie, which is appropriately titled The Trench, is being written by newcomers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, with Aquaman director James Wan and Peter Safran producing. THR reports that the script will be "horror-tinged," meaning that you should expect plenty more scares than what you saw in Aquaman. It is also expected that the project will work off of a smaller budget than the recent blockbuster.
As far as the cast goes, THR says that the main cast of Aquaman will not appear in this spinoff,...

With Aquaman being met with great reviews and exploding at the box office, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment would want to cash in more on its success.
While we all know that an Aquaman sequel will eventually happen, it looks like there’s going to be a spinoff film before it does. The studio is developing a movie called The Trench and they’ve hired newbie writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald to write “a horror-tinged script centered on the Trench, the deadly amphibious creatures seen attacking the hero and his love, Mera, in Aquaman.”
James Wan will produce alongside Peter Safran and it’s said to be a much more modestly budgeted film than the normal DC superhero tentpole movies.
I loved the design of The Trench creatures in Aquaman and I’m actually pretty excited to learn that they might get their own movie.

As Aquaman has quickly become the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros.' DC franchise, it should come as no surprise that they'd want more. As we know, an Aquaman sequel is officially in the early stages, but there's also been discussions of an Aquaman spin-off as well. THR has reported that Warner Bros. have tasked up-and-coming screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan…...

THR reports that writers Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have been hired to pen a “horror-tinged script” focused on the monsters that attacked Arthur Curry and Mera in last year’s release. While details remain vague, it’s said that the project will be set in the kingdom of the Trench, will not feature the main cast of Aquaman, and will be produced by Wan and his regular collaborator Peter Safran. Warner Bros. is developing an “Aquaman” spinoff “The Trench,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have been tapped to write the script. James Wan and Peter Safran are producing.
According to DC Comics, The Trench were introduced in Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis’s Aquaman #1 comic book back in 2011. The Trench are a race of monstrous sea creatures who came from a trench in the bottom of the sea. Actually, not just any trench, the Marianas Trench, one of the deepest and most mysterious canyons in the ocean floor. The Trench used to be normal, human-looking Atlantean citizens, back before the city sank beneath the sea. When King Atlan drowned the city, the surviving Atlanteans were split off into not two, but three independent groups: the Atlanteans we know today, the Xebelians who existed in the Bermuda Triangle, and the Trench...

With Aquaman being a billion-dollar hit, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. wants more waterworks from its DC Comics hero.
