After the well-received “Joyland” in 2022 and “In Flames” last year, Pakistan is debuting a central hub at the Cannes Film Festival this year.
The Pakistan Crescent Collective, set up by Modoxy Media, will represent the country’s official presence at the festival, with a mission to “discover and nurture the next generation of talent, preserve film, and
promote Pakistani and diaspora films globally, thereby advancing Pakistan’s visual culture.” The collective consists of a global team of film industry professionals based in London, Karachi, New York and Los Angeles.
Saim Sadiq’s “Joyland” won the Un Certain Regard jury prize in 2022, while Zarrar Kahn’s “In Flames” was a Directors’ Fortnight selection. Both films were Pakistan’s official submissions to the Academy Awards. Usman Riaz’s animated film “The Glassworker,” which is selected at Annecy, is an homage to films in the style of this year’s honorary Palme d’Or winner Studio Ghibli.

The Most Precious of Cargoes, the first animated feature from Oscar-winning French director Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist), will open this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The feature is a 2D animated adaptation of the best-selling book by French author Jean-Claude Grumberg. Set during World War II, it tells the story of a French Jewish family deported to Auschwitz. On the train to the death camp, in a desperate gesture, the father throws one of his baby twins out into the snow, where he’s discovered by a childless Polish couple living deep in the forest.
Hazanavicius presented the film as a work-in-progress at Annecy two years ago. French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant narrates the film with voice acting from Dominique Blanc, Denis Podalydès, and Grégory Gadebois. Oscar-winning composer Alexandre Desplat (The Shape of Water) composed the score. Animation is from 3.0 Studio – formerly Prima Linea — the group behind the...

Norwegian feature directed by Magnus Martens began shooting this week.
French sales and co-production house Charades has picked up Magnus Martens’ Norwegian holiday horror romp There’s Something in the Barn.
Produced by Norway’s 74 Entertainment, with US-based XYZ Films executive producing and co-financing, the film began shooting on October 24 and will make its market debut at AFM.
Charades describes the offbeat title as “Gremlins meets Home Alone meets National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” It follows a typical American family who inherit a farm in the Norwegian mountains and cross paths with a tricky creature from Nordic folklore, the Barn Elf.

Of all the thousands of movies I've seen in my life, I can say that this is the first time I've ever seen Pakistani animation, and I'm happy to say that it looks pretty damn solid. I've tried to keep my ear to the ground as much as possible, though it's only a couple of times a year that I get an opportunity to check out something new from the country. This morning, however, I came across an image from a brand new Urdu-language animated feature titled The Glassworker. The Glassworker is the first feature from musician/director Usman Riaz and Pakistan's first hand-drawn animation studio, Mano Animation Studios. The film was crowd-funded earlier this year and the team is shooting for a release in 2017....
