Kim Godwin, the ABC News president who was the first Black woman to run a broadcast network news operation, is leaving the Disney unit amid increasing concern about the way she was managing the home of shows like “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight.”
Godwin told staffers in a memo Sunday that she planned to “retire from broadcast journalism.” Her command had come under increasing scrutiny since a restructuring of ABC News and Disney’s ABC stations had her reporting directly to Debra OConnell, a Disney business veteran who is seen as a valued operator at the company. OConnell will lead ABC News for the foreseeable future, she told employees Sunday evening.
A Disney spokesperson declined to make executives available for additional comment or to respond to a query about what changes Godwin’s exit might mean for the executive’s immediate direct reports or the management of individual ABC News programs.

Kimberly Godwin, a veteran of local and national TV-news operations, will be the next president of ABC News — and the first Black executive to run a broadcast-network news operation.
Disney on Wednesday confirmed that Godwin, who has been with CBS News since 2007, will take over the role most recently held by James Goldston. She will now be charged with maintaining the status of two of ABC News’ mainstays, “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight,” both of which are the most-watched programs in their category, along with shows like “The View,” “20/20 and “This Week.” And she will have ultimate say over the news unit’s increasingly frequent steps into live-streaming, audio and special programming.
She will join ABC News in May.

CBS News veteran Kim Godwin is expected to become the next president of ABC News, a move that would make her the first Black executive to lead a broadcast-network news division in the U.S.
Godwin has had an offer from Disney’s ABC for several weeks, according to a person familiar with the matter, but only in the last few days did CBS CEO George Cheeks agree to let the executive out of her contract. The decision, this person says, was not an easy one for CBS to make; the company wanted to keep Godwin on board. Godwin was recently given new responsibilities at CBS’ local stations, taking oversight of news operations there in the wake of the dismissal of executives Peter Dunn and David Friend amid a probe of allegations about their behavior.
CBS News declined to comment. ABC News, CBS and Disney could not be reached for immediate comment.

Disney’s search for a new leader for ABC News continues weeks after the company unexpectedly disclosed the former president, James Goldston, would leave the post.
Goldston’s last day came at the end of March and the company has yet to hone in on a candidate to replace him, according to four people familiar with parts of the search process. When ABC News heads like David Westin or Ben Sherwood left in years past, Disney identified a successor. That hasn’t been the case in the current matter.
Disney and ABC News declined to make executives available for comment.
The quest for a news leader comes as ABC News is taking up more space in the company’s overall programming mix. The division has begun to generate more hours for primetime, where live news specials and deep dives into colorful stories have found a broader perch, and as Americans...

ABC News will elevate Derek Medina to executive vice president, giving him oversight of many of the Walt Disney unit’s business operations and freeing president James Goldston to devote some of his time to broader strategies.
“He will be a key partner for me in running our business who will manage our operational efforts and growth strategies and work with me and all our leaders on advancing the culture,” said Goldston in a prepared statement. The heads of marketing, global newsgathering operations, news administration, news practices and non-fiction production will report to Medina.
HIs ascension reflects the absence of a designated second-in-command executive at ABC News in recent years. Some of those duties had been taken up by Barbara Fedida, a former senior vice president who left ABC News earlier this year, and Tom Cibrowski, a former senior vice president who left in 2018 to run Disney-owned ABC station Kgo in San Francisco.

Donald Trump ripped the “ridiculous standard” of the first 100 days in office as a benchmark, but ABC News senior vice president Tom Cibrowski disagrees with the president. “We think it’s important for all of our platforms to take a step back and look at what President Trump has said, what he has accomplished and the challenges he’s faced so far, and get a sense of what Americans from all parts feel about the direction of the country right now,” Cibrowski told TheWrap. While 100 days is a small portion of a four-year term, many historians, cable news programs, political watchdogs — and.

ABC News’ “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight” both won November sweeps for the first time in 21 years. ABC News senior VP Tom Cibrowski says the success is partially because the network “doubled down” on election coverage and offered “a very fair representation” of both candidates, so that viewers on both sides of the aisle could consume the network’s content. “It is an incredibly exciting time to be in the news business and I think that our passion and seriousness in covering the big stories in the news is showing,” Cibrowski told TheWrap. “These are earth-shattering times we’re living.

This morning, Good Morning America unveiled the #socialsquare, which it says is a “groundbreaking new digital studio” engaging viewers on a daily basis with the broadcast and social conversation. An expansion of the morning infotainment series’ current Times Square studio, #socialsquare is the new social “nerve center” for the broadcast, featuring installations developed with the leading social media platforms allowing Gma guests to interact with viewers throughout the broadcast, ABC News says. ”This will revolutionize how our show is produced in the morning and its all about engaging directly with our viewers from beginning to end,” Gma senior executive producer Tom Cibrowski said this morning. More than one person this morning has noted NBC’s Today, which is in a ratings death match with Gma, debuted its like-minded digital space, Orange Room, last September. This story first appeared in the Jan. 10, 2013 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. It took more than 16 years, but in April, the anchors and producers of ABC's Good Morning America did the improbable: They vanquished the 852-week ratings win streak of NBC's Today, snapping a television phenomenon the industry is unlikely to see again. "To change people's habits in the morning is nearly impossible," says Gma senior executive producer Tom Cibrowski. Gma did it by putting together a team of anchors -- adding Josh Elliott, 41, and Lara Spencer, 43, to the show's George Stephanopoulos, 51,

Out of the four major networks, ABC clearly has the strongest relationship with the online video world. In addition to the multiple creators it has snatched up for TV deals and it's symbiotic relationship with YouTube during election season, ABC has also been quick to create web companions for its popular shows. A few months after it began airing a Dancing With The Stars after-show web companion, the network is giving the same treatment to its long-running Am program, Good Morning America. The web companion will be titled Gma Live, and it will begin at 9:15 every weekday, with the first episode airing on December 10. Though a short teaser trailer was released, it's hard to get a beat on what Gma Live will feature, though a statement from Executive Producer Tom Cibrowski gives us some hints. “This is a chance for our gang to put their feet up and bring...

A chief reason for Robin Roberts's early departure from Good Morning America on Thursday was the serious condition of her mother, Lucimarian Tolliver Roberts. That dethrones Today, which had been on top for more than 16 years — since the week of Dec. 4, 1995. Compared with the previous week, when Katie Couric subbed for Roberts, Gma increased its viewership by 7% while Today, sans vacationing co-host Matt Lauer, was down 9%. “This is an exciting day, but we will save any celebrating for when the final numbers come in on Thursday,” said Tom Cibrowski, Gma‘s senior executive producer. NBC’s historic Today show ratings reign might be coming to an end.
ABC’s Good Morning America may have finally broken Today’s 16-year winning streak. Preliminary ratings show Gma averaging 5.147 million viewers for the week of April 9 compared to Today’s 5.134 million. That’s a razor-thin margin of 13,000 viewers, with final numbers to come later this week.
An ABC analyst says the network is “cautiously optimistic” that Gma will come out on top. “This is an exciting day but we will save any celebrating for when the final numbers come in on Thursday,” said Gma senior executive producer Tom Cibrowski.
