Born in New York City in 1930, she was adopted at six months by Herbert and Helen Goldman of Milton, Massachusetts and named Ilene. She spent much of her early years preparing to become a concert pianist. She took her first piano lessons at six, attended the New England Conservatory School of Music in Boston, and was mentored by Arthur Fiedler, longtime conductor of the Boston Pops.
