I’ll start with an important disclaimer for all readers since the following hot take will inevitably trigger strong reactions. As someone from a small European country and born in 1994, Ghostbusters (1984) was never a defining classic of my childhood or adolescence, so I don’t feel the nostalgia that many others have for the original film, although I do enjoy it. That said, I (re)watched it, along with Ghostbusters II and Ghostbusters: Afterlife this week in preparation for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and – here it comes – I consider the 2021 sequel my favorite movie in the famous franchise. In fact, comparing it directly with the original – here it comes again – beyond the inevitable audiovisual improvements, I find Afterlife to have better humor, characters, and cast.

This article contains some Ghostbusters: forzen empire spoilers.
You know about Zuul. You know about Gozer. You know about Vigo the Carpathian. You might even know about Dr. Rowan North. But for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, director Gil Kenan needed to pit the next generation of Ghostbusters against an all-new spook we’ve never seen before.
“You don’t get many opportunities in this world to create a Ghostbusters villain. And I took on that role with relish,” Kenan tells Den of Geek. That enthusiasm resulted in Garraka, a horned creature who can not only cover the world in ice but also controls other ghosts with a type of telepathy. To defeat this threat, the Ghostbusters need more than their tools and their talent. They must also get help from the slacker Nadeem (Kumail Nanjiani), who happens to be the last in a line of ancinet warriors called Fire Masters,...

Before Carrie Coon busted ghosts with a proton pack in the Ghostbusters franchise, she battled the ghostly figures of the Guilty Remnant with a garden hose on The Leftovers. Of course, both projects are wildly different in genre and tone, but they’re two of several examples where Coon has added a welcome complexity to mother characters that is not as common as it should be. In Gil Kenan’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Coon picks up right where she left off in Jason Reitman’s 2021 franchise revival, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Her Callie Spengler character, along with boyfriend Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd) and her two teenage children, Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), are now full-fledged Ghostbusters, operating out of the famous firehouse in New York City.
“Callie feels like a very real mom who’s maybe not always great at the job, and makes mistakes and has to make repairs.

“Where are you from? Originally?” The question Peter Venkman asks in Ghostbusters has become relevant again.
We already knew that the fifth film in the series, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, would see the return of not only the three living original Ghostbusters but also Annie Potts’s Janine as a full-fledged member of the team. But while previous reports from director Gil Kenan, who co-wrote Ghostbusters: Afterlife with that film’s director and Frozen Empire co-writer Jason Reitman, insisted that the previous film shut the door on Ivo Shandor, Gozer, and Zuul, the latest trailer for Frozen Empire shows that not every old antagonist is in the past.
The trailer opens with narrator describing a longstanding feud with the Ghostbusters, indicating a long standing grudge. “They have a minor hanging out of a moving vehicle,” the voice intones with incredulity. “Firing a laser gun.”
Even before the trailer reveals the speaker...

There is no Gozer, only… well, we don’t know yet.
After the chaos that followed the release of 2016’s series revamp Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, Sony went full nostalgia with Ghostbusters: Afterlife in an attempt to appease change-resistant fans. The studio recruited Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, as well as the original four Ghostbusters (including the late Harold Ramis in CGI-ghost form). Afterlife even brought back the main villain of that first movie, Gozer the Gozerian.
In other words, it was a textbook legacy sequel that introduced a new generation of heroes while nodding to the originals, and according to Afterlife co-writer Gil Kenan, the movie’s structure demanded Gozer’s return.
“Because the Spengler family story drove the narrative in Afterlife, bringing Gozer back to centre-stage was a natural way to close the book on the past,” he told Empire. That explanation does track with...

(Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Movie: "Ghostbusters"
Where You Can Stream It: HBO Max
The Pitch: Friends, we've hit that part of the year when the December festivities are over, guilt commercials for taxes and the gym have begun, and it's still too cold to do anything much outside other than shovel snow. We've got weeks until the next holiday, and everything seems pretty grey and bleak. When you're feeling miserable and down in the dumps, who ya gonna call? "Ghostbusters!"
The film, one of my all-time favorite comedies, came up over the holiday. I learned that a lot of people who were born after the Ivan Reitman film came out in 1984 have seen clips and heard of it — they may have even seen...

I Know Dino: The Big Dinosaur Podcast is celebrating their eight-year anniversary!
I Know Dino is a weekly show all about dinosaurs, hosted by husband and wife team Garret Kruger and Sabrina Ricci. When the show launched in 2015, there were no other podcasts dedicated to dinosaurs.
Eight years later, they have nearly 3 million downloads worldwide, have conducted interviews with over 150 dinosaur experts, and have become full-time podcasters. And they still love talking about dinosaurs all the time.
Each week, I Know Dino dives into the latest dinosaur news (there’s a new discovery every week), features a “dinosaur of the day” segment, and a fun fact. The couple also have a “dinosaur connection challenge” segment, where listeners suggest random topics and challenge them to connect the topic to dinosaurs. Past topics include sandwiches, chocolate, and the Titanic.
As part of the celebrations, all throughout January I Know Dino will be...

If you’re a fan of “Ghostbusters” movies, then you know that there are four of them in total. But what’s the correct order to watch them? Some say you should watch them in the order they were released, but others argue that chronological order is the way to go. So which is it?
In this blog post, we’ll take a look at both options and help you decide which is the best way for you to watch the Ghostbusters movies. We’ll start with a brief overview of each film and then recommend the best way to watch them. So whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual viewer, read on to find out which sequence is correct.
The “Ghostbusters” franchise follows the story of a group of paranormal investigators who use high-tech equipment to capture ghosts, and all subsequent Ghostbusters fiction is based on the same theme.

“I never drank alone before rehab,” cracks Hildy Good (Sigourney Weaver), a divorced, 60-year-old real estate agent whose façade of grace and stability is crumbling even faster than that of the quaint Massachusetts harbor town where her family has lived since the days of the Salem witch trials; what’s happening to Wendover isn’t what you’d call “gentrification,” but the influx of chain businesses and white-collar types buying up all the colonial houses has made the place a shell of what it used to be. Hildy is on the verge of getting priced out, herself, and she’s not taking it well.
By the time we meet her, she’s already talking to herself — or to us through the fourth wall — with the performative casualness of someone who’s about to have the rug pulled out from under them. It’s a device that helps Maya Forbes and...

As Hollywood tries to shake off a little box office rust, we’re reminded that, oh yeah, we’re getting another Ghostbusters movie. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set to hit theater on November 11 and a second trailer has just been released for it.
Much like the first trailer, we get a basic idea of our main characters and setting, but the threat is a little better explained. We still don’t fully understand what these kids are up against, but like a puzzle-based entrance to a scientist’s basement, the pieces are starting to come together.
Before we get started, here’s the trailer itself…
Okay. Now let’s get into what we see.
Carrie Coon is Egon Spengler’s Daughter
Callie (Carrie Coon) is the daughter of Egon Spengler and a single mother of two. Having lost their home and just being broke, they move to Summerville, Oklahoma, where Egon had owned a decrepit,...

It’s no secret that the Jason Reitman-directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a canonized sequel that brings us back to the universe in which the ‘busters not only battled Zuul and Vigo, but also puppeteered the Statue of Liberty through New York. While the trailer confirmed this, it was maybe a bit too serious, which led to star Finn Wolfhard […]...

Two treasure hunters uncover a sealed tomb and awaken a mummy that has waited years to come back and wipe humanity from the face of the Earth. It’s a race against time as they try to stop the Mummy from wreaking havoc on the modern world…
What’s that? A new mummy movie? Is it a sequel to the Tom Cruise movie? Nope. Is it an mockbuster from The Asylum? Nope. Then what is it?
Well in truth it’s a brand-new take on the mummy mythos from filmmaker Justin Price and actress turned producer/director Khu, who previously worked with Price on films like Snare, The 13th Friday and Dark Moon Rising. It’s also a take on the legend that returns to a more serious tone,...
