One of the most original bands to ever hit the “America’s Got Talent” stage, Gangstagrass, was shockingly eliminated during the Quarterfinals 1 results show. The bluegrass/rap band strives to prove we all have “common ground” despite our differences, but America clearly didn’t feel a connection to their original song, “All For One” (watch below), during the August 10 performance show. Of the five acts to be cut from the live shows, 24% of fans thought Gangstagrass was most “robbed” of a spot in the “AGT” semifinals. Here are the complete poll results:
47% — Beyond Belief Dance Company
24% — Gangstagrass
21% — The Canine Stars
5% — Sethward
3% — Matt Johnson

“America’s Got Talent” season 16 continues on June 29 with another audition episode showcasing the best (and worst) from the first stage of the competition. In this phase of “AGT,” an act needs at least three of the four judges to give them a “yes” vote to advance to the next round. If two or more judges buzz the act, it is immediately eliminated. Each judge, along with host Terry Crews, has one chance to hit the “golden buzzer” and send an act straight through to the live performances.
Last week, Sofia played a dirty trick on Jimmie Herrod by refusing to stand in ovation with the other judges after his burning-down-of-the-house rendition of “Tomorrow.” But after teasing that she didn’t “like” his performance, she admitted that she “loved” it and gave him her golden buzzer.
Before that, Terry demonstrated his support for World Taekwondo by throwing them his golden buzzer...

When “AGT” airs its fifth audition episode on Tuesday, June 29, get ready to meet an inspirational band named Gangstagrass. This group of men from all walks of life got together 11 years ago and have been “rockin’ together ever since.” As the band explains to host Terry Crews, their goal in coming to the biggest reality TV show in the world is to prove through “quintessentially American music … that we have some common ground.” Watch the “America’s Got Talent” sneak peek video above.

The third track on one of my favorite rock records of the last decade, Okkervil River’s The Stage Names, is called “A Hand to Take Hold of the Scene.” Without context, its lyric is a bit of a tough nut to crack. Will Sheff sings about events unfolding on a TV screen in the first verse, recaps a dream in the second, and seems to outline the narrator’s innermost wishes in the third. What’s not immediately apparent is that the first verse outlines scenes from two completely different TV shows – scenes that happened to be scored by Okkervil River songs. The first half of the verse refers to “It Ends With a Fall” (from Down the River of Golden Dreams) and its use on the reality series Breaking Bonaduce. (I don’t have that clip handy.) The second half, and probably the more illustrative of the two in any case,...
