Aaron is joined by Jeff Smith, Film Professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Lady P, host of Flixwise. Dr. Smith has a focus on music within film, and co-hosts FilmStruck’s Observations on Film Art with David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson. As fate has it, Lady P is in the process of beginning a graduate film studies program at University of Wisconsin-Madison. We had an enjoyable discussion about academic living, from both the faculty and student perspective. We also discuss Criterion’s November 2017 announcements, debate Jimmy Stewart versus Cary Grant, and we talk about FilmStruck’s offerings for the week.

In comics news this week, Bill Watterson, the creator of Calvin & Hobbes, won the prestigious Angoulême Grand Prix (a kind of lifetime achievement award) at the biggest comic convention in the world, the Angoulême International Comics Festival. The famously reclusive comics creator was not in attendance but the award is the second time an American has won, the last being Art Spiegelman, the creator of Maus, who won 2 years ago. Calvin & Hobbes ended in 1996 but Watterson’s anti-commercial artistic integrity and the quality of his work has won him many admirers and the strip continues to be popular to this day.
There’s a rumour going around that Geoff Johns’ new ongoing project will be Superman. Johns has been dropping titles left and right, handing off Aquaman to Jeff Parker and finishing his acclaimed Green Lantern run last year, and with Forever Evil coming to an end shortly, his only...

I didn’t read comics as a kid. At all. Ever. Then, one year, someone gave my brother a copy of The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes. I remember picking it up, idly, when I was bored, and getting hooked. The transmogrifier, the red wagon rides, the school scenes… Calvin was something I saw within myself, and something I wanted to be, and something that showed me a whole universe of possibilities waiting for me.
Dear Mr. Watterson, a documentary by Joel Allen Schroeder, plumbs the depths of the influence Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes, has had on readers, comic writers, and comic book publishers. Watterson does not appear in the documentary. He is famously unfriendly to the media. Instead, Schroeder mostly uses talking head interviews with fans and industry professionals to explore what Calvin and Hobbes meant and what the man behind it had to tell us. He...

Arrested Development fans have a lot to be thankful for these days (and after years of nothing but bad news, that.s reason enough to celebrate). The short-lived but still beloved show is about to return to Netflix for an anticipated fourth season. And talk about a possible Ad movie continues to swirl. Maybe this windfall of Ad positivity will have fans looking for a way they can financially contribute to the future of the comedic franchise? If so, there.s a Kickstarter campaign they might be interested in. Neil Lieberman and Jeff Smith spent the limbo inbetween Arrested Development projects making a documentary about the show.s then-uncertain future. They interviewed virtually everyone associated with Ad, and now have a finished doc that they.d like to distribute. But they need money to help with some of the licensing costs, so they are doing what most financially-strapped filmmakers do...

In the wake of President Obama's proposed gun laws, a few states are claiming sovereignty when it comes to enforcing said laws. One of the worst offenders: Mississippi, where lawmakers are pushing for a "nullification panel" whose intended purpose would be to block the enforcement of federal legislation they deem unconstitutional.

Music is just about everywhere on TV these days — except in most shows' opening credits. The glory days of the TV title song may be long gone, but a few new series are keeping the theme alive.
Most notably, ABC's comedy Malibu Country boasts a traditional opening tune. When it came time to put the show's title credits together, it made perfect sense to ask star Reba McEntire to choose the song. McEntire — who also performed the opening theme to her last sitcom, Reba ("I'm a Survivor") — came back with "Goodbye Looks Good on Me," written by Kellys Collins, Juliana Cole and Jeff Smith.
Here are the titles and talent behind some of this fall's new TV opening themes.

Dark Horse Comics Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie had an in-depth chat with the Eisner Award-winning writer/artist David Lapham on a wide range of topics including his adaptation of The Strain, the upcoming Ferals, the ups and downs of the comics world, blowing off steam on Twitter, and lots more.
Scott Allie: After breaking into superhero comics, you really made a name for yourself with Stray Bullets, which did two things: It (1) established you as a brilliant crime cartoonist and (2) marked a pinnacle of self-publishing, creator-owned success. Lately you've been a lot busier on licensed books. What's different about the industry now, as opposed to the late Nineties?

The ‘It’s Your Right’ campaign – created by Bcm – invites women to become citizens of ‘The Republic of Triumph’ and join a community where women are empowered to express their opinions, according to a press release.
