Cody Heller admits she was terrified when she began production on the mockumentary series Jury Duty, which features a cast of actors putting on a fictional civil trial in which one single member of the jury is a non-actor — an everyman named Ronald Gladden — who is unaware that everything around him is completely fake. Over the course of three weeks, Heller ran an experimental production in which much of what happens onscreen was designed to follow Gladden as he serves as the jury’s foreman while sequestered with a motley crew of personalities of varying extremes — including Hollywood actor James Marsden, who earned an Emmy nomination for his supporting turn as a heightened version of himself.
Heller spoke with THR to break down how the series found its hero in Gladden, what extensive preparation was needed to pull off the production and why the end result restored her faith in humanity.

On July 12, 2023 we witnessed a true act of justice. “Jury Duty,” the Amazon Freevee cinéma vérité-style sitcom from creators Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (“The Office”) swiped four Emmy nominations including Best Comedy Series. Despite a disclaimer stating the exploration of the American judicial process is its primary goal, “Jury Duty” ends up achieving so much more. But can it pull off an Emmy upset?
The comedy category is a tricky one. Voters love to follow the multiple-winner trend. However, in recent years the TV academy has also shown an interest in going off-book by awarding more under-the-radar shows like “Fleabag” in 2019. “Jury Duty” could play that role this year, attracting voters who live in a generation that thrives on the drama of reality TV and bathes in the comfort of sitcoms. It successfully weaves the two genres with hilarious results. Viewers were glued to the screen with a great skeleton script,...

When the genre-bending comedy “Jury Duty” launched its eight-episode run in April, Emmy nominations were the farthest thing from anyone’s mind. Of greater concern was simply having people know it was available at all, given that it was available on the little-known Amazon Freevee streaming service. “Actually, it was a blessing and a curse because it was such a crazy experimental undertaking,” admits Cody Heller, “Jury Duty’s” showrunner and executive producer. “There were moments where I was like, ‘Ok, if the show blows up and fails, at least no one will probably see it.’ But then once we finished it and we were all so proud of the work we’d done, we were like, ‘Oh man, I hope people watch it.'” Added fellow exec producer Nicholas Hatton: “To know that people have received the show in the spirit in which we intended has been beyond rewarding.

Jury Duty‘s back and delivering all of the commentaries you wish you had while watching the first time around on Amazon Freevee. Re-releasing the first season with commentary from the cast, including Ronald Gladden and James Marsden, as well as director Jake Szymanski, this latest version promises just as many laughs along with answers. Already streaming on Amazon Freevee, the new commentary episodes unveil never-before-heard anecdotes about what it took to create the chaotic world in which Ronald thinks he’s making a documentary about serving on a jury but is, in fact, the hero of a story filled with actors pretending to be everyday people, including Marsden who portrays a fictional version of himself. In an exclusive Q&a below, executive producer Nicholas Hatton offers up some fun Easter Eggs and explains the release of the commentary episodes and much more. Jury Duty, the surprise hit on Amazon Freevee, is a very good and funny show. The premise is high-concept, the episodes tightly written and edited. The casting is impeccable, including that of James Marsden as a heightened, more narcissistic version of himself, providing a fitting venue for his staggering comedic talents. And some of the gags, including one with a botched animation of a court re-creation, made me laugh harder than I have ever laughed in my life.

Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty quickly became a must-watch. Ten days after it began streaming on April 7, it was named as the No. 1 streamed show, beating out Netflix’s Beef and The Diplomat. Normally, a show this well-received would be a slam dunk for a second season. But can a show like Jury Duty even have a second season? Here’s what some of the executive producers of the show have said.
The cast of ‘Jury Duty’ | Amazon Studios/YouTube Showrunner and executive producer Cody Heller says the ‘Jury Duty’ concept is possible in ‘a million different worlds’
“I do think a second season would be possible,” showrunner and executive producer Cody Heller told Variety.
Amazon Freevee hasn’t announced a second season for Jury Duty. But Heller is already thinking about the possibilities.
“Obviously, it would have to be a whole different universe,” she said.

Freevee's "Jury Duty" is the surprise hit of 2023. Fans are obsessed with Ronald Gladden, the unsuspecting and sweet non-actor who was roped into participating in the mock trial under the impression that it was real. Actor James Marsden participated in the project, as well, playing an exaggerated, arrogant, and self-important version of himself, which leads to plenty of hilariously awkward interactions with Gladden throughout the season's eight episodes.
In an April 20 interview with Deadline, Marsden admitted that maintaining communication with Gladden throughout the trial was like walking a tightrope. "The tricky part with Ronald was we had to push these beats where I was being 'Jackass James Marsden,' but not turning him off to the degree where he wouldn't confide in me or he wouldn't want to be seen with me," Marsden said. "I remember early on pushing something a little too far, and he migrates over to the...

Ronald Gladden thought he was just doing his civic duty, with a few cameras following along. Like all the other participants in the documentary-style comedy series "Jury Duty," which premiered on Amazon Freevee on April 7, Gladden plays himself in the show - but unlike the others, who are all actors, Gladden actually thought he was participating in a documentary about a real trial.
"Jury Duty," though, is most definitely not about a real trial. Co-created by "The Office"'s Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, the show stars James Marsden, a group of actors, and the unsuspecting Gladden as jurors in a three-week Los Angeles trial. Out of the 12 jurors, Gladden is the only one who isn't aware that he's in a carefully plotted comedy series.

Freevee’s new series Jury Duty is gearing up for its finale on Friday, and executive producer Nicholas Hatton and star James Marsden spoke with Deadline about all that went into creating the docu-style comedy with no one finding out. An exclusive featurette for Jury Duty can be found above.
Across 8-episodes, the series chronicles the inner workings of an American jury trial through the eyes of one juror, Ronald Gladden. Gladden is unaware the entire case is fake, everyone except him is an actor, including Marsden, and everything that happens — inside the courtroom and out — is carefully planned.
Hatton— who collaborated with Sacha Baron Cohen on Borat Subsequent Movie Film and Who is America—opened up about how difficult the process was from the show’s inception to its conclusion because everything could fall apart at any point of production. The key ingredient here was secrecy.

If you haven’t moaned out loud upon getting a jury duty summons, you no doubt have heard the whimper from someone else. The perfect setting for a sitcom, right? Well just imagine if the eclectic assortment of personalities you’d find while serving as a juror was cast with unknown improvisational actors trying a fake case — and you were the only one not in on the joke. That is what Amazon Freevee has pulled off with its new show called simply “Jury Duty.” And, according to executive producers Nicholas Hatton and Cody Heller, it was quite a complicated undertaking.
The concept was an amalgamation of ideas from writer/producers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, who had written a script about jury duty in the style of their previous hit “The Office,” along with longtime Sasha Baron Cohen collaborator Todd Schulman and producer David Bernad, who collectively came up with the idea,...

The creative minds behind The Office set their new docu-style comedy in the courtroom. Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty, which just released a trailer, focuses on 12 jurors…but only one doesn’t realize he’s not sitting on a real jury.
“Jury Duty originated with a question: Was it possible to make a sitcom like The Office about a trial, populate it with brilliant comedic performers, and put a real person at the center of the show who doesn’t realize he’s surrounded by actors?” said executive producer Todd Schulman (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm). “We honestly had no idea, but when we pitched it to Freevee we pretended like it was a sure thing. Thank God we pulled it off.”
The Office‘s Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky created the series and serve as executive producers. David Bernad (The White Lotus), Ruben Fleischer (Superstore), Nicholas Hatton (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm), Cody Heller...

“Jury Duty,” the upcoming docu-style comedy series starring James Marsden as himself, explores truths stranger than fiction when one unsuspecting juror is put in a courtroom of actors for a fake case and a faker documentary.
Marsden leads the “Truman Show”-style misadventure, playing a version of himself who tries – and fails – to get out of his civic duty when the judge fails to recognize him as a public figure. In the first trailer for the Amazon Freevee series, which dropped Tuesday, other characters are seen pushing the envelope of what’s acceptable behavior in the literal court of law – while real-life juror Ronald Gladden goes about his duty being none the wiser that everything is staged.

Exclusive: There have been whispers for months about a top-secret courtroom docu-style comedy series filming to run on Amazon Freevee. We can reveal that the project, starring James Marsden, is now in post-production and headed to the screen.

The secrecy surrounding the filming was driven by the nature of the semi-improvised series which we hear employs a device similar to the setup used in Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat and Brüno movies and the series Who Is America? where actors, often in disguise, interact with unsuspecting regular people.

Borat is back. Sacha Baron Cohen has revived his Kazakhstani character Borat for a new film in which he continues to journey across the U.S. and even fight the coronavirus…even if it’s trying to smash it with a frying pan.
In the first full trailer for the film, which debuts on Amazon Prime Video on October 23, he also disguises himself as Donald Trump at the 2020 Cpac convention — and interrupts a speech by Vice President Mike Pence at the annual gathering of conservatives.
The disguise was necessary. The first “Borat” film became such a wild success in 2006 that Baron Cohen eventually vowed that he would retire the character. And sure enough, as Borat tries to travel America this time and spread the word of his home country, he’s a bit too recognizable. Annapurna International said on Thursday it had sold out all territories outside the Us on the Four By Two Films comedy remake to star Sacha Baron Cohen.
eOne has acquired the UK, Australia, Canada and Benelux, while Sun will distribute in Latin America, Constantin in Germany, and Metropolitan in France.
Eagle has acquired Klown for Italy, ProRom for Eastern Europe, Nordisk for Scandinavia, and Tri Pictures for Spain, among other territory deals.
Screen broke the story during the market that Annapurna International introduced the new project and hosted British comic Baron Cohen at a buyers’ presentation. The company claimed that so far Klown is the only new title introduced at the recent Afm to completely sell out.
It is understood the English-language remake will be a semi-improvisational take on Mikkel Norgaard’s record-breaking 2010 Danish comedy about a man desperate to prove his worth to his girlfriend.
