Last week, PBS Digital Studios (Pbsds) announced it had partnered with the Interactive Engagement Group of PBS-owned New York news station Wnet to produce the Lgbtq-themed web series First Person. Now, the two companies have debuted the first episode called “Trans 2.0” featuring YouTuber Skylar Kergil.
The premiere episode of First Person shows viewers the story of Kergil, who started documenting his transgender journey back in 2009 on YouTube. The artist tells First Person host and Everyone Is Gay founder Kristin Russo how he didn’t necessarily intend to become a voice for the trans community, but found that’s where his vlogging took him. Kergil currently boasts over 64,000 subscribers on his channel.
In addition to Kergil, First Person will profile other Lgbtq-related personalities like Kate Fagan, an Espn correspondent, and fashion icon Nicolette Mason. The series is produced by Russo and Meredith Heil, and Wnet Interactive Engagement Group’s Daniel B. Greenberg...

PBS Digital Studios is branching out from its usual educational programming of literary, science, and philosophy content to take on an important social issue. The YouTube network has teamed up with the Interactive Engagement Group of Wnet, a New York-based PBS station, to release a new web series called First Person, featuring personal stories related to the Lgbtq community.
First Person episodes will include interviews, host commentary, and viewer comments and prompts via the series’ social media accounts to generate discussion around different sets of issues the Lgbtq community faces. Some of the initial topics PBS and Wnet’s new series will will address are transgender transitions on YouTube, queer fashion, and coming out in the world of sports.

This morning the national Lgbt media advocacy organization GLAAD announced nominees for the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. According to GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis, the year “has brought momentous progress for Lgbt people and families – and our nominees have created images and stories that continue to challenge misconceptions, shatter stereotypes, and change hearts and minds of millions all across the globe.”
There are 130 nominees in 29 categories but a few notable honorees include wide release films Dallas Buyers Club, Philomena and Kill Your Darlings, all of which were previously reviewed here on TheBacklot.
In the limited release category, Geography Club scored a nod. (The film is based on the classic Ya novel by AfterElton alum Brent Hartinger.)
In the outstanding TV drama category, ABC Family scored 2 nominees: The Fosters and Pretty Little Liars.
