From Afar, Vigas tells the story of Armando (Alfredo Castro), a wealthy, isolated, middle-aged man who makes false teeth for a living and pays young street thugs to accompany him back to his apartment.
Profoundly damaged by what was probably childhood abuse at the hands of his father, Armando has no desire for physical contact; he only wants to watch, and to watch very little. But when he encounters the explosive, unpredictable Elder (newcomer Luis Silva), he can't help but be drawn to the troubled young...

This year's Oscar race for foreign film has the usual number of World War II dramas, biopics, and historical epics but as far as we can tell it's only got one Latin American Lgbt drama about a damaged old man's thorny relationship with a poor street hustler he picks up who keeps coming back thereafter for more cash and the more mysterious pull of companionship. That film, Desde Alla / From Afar, now available to screen on Netflix, began its breakthrough journey winning the Golden Lion at Venice in 2015 for first time narrative director Lorenzo Vigas. I talked to him about working with an Oscar winning screenwriter, that Venice honor, and his terrific young find, Luis Silva, who holds his own opposite one of the Latin America's finest actors, Alredo Castro.

Venice winners often seem overlooked, perhaps because the festival’s biggest titles are a) weeks away from hitting other festivals on other continents and / or b) expected to open within the next few months. From Afar was not one of last year’s bigger titles, despite taking home the Golden Lion — do I need to tell you that’s the top prize? does any film award, or really any prize, sound as victorious as “Golden Lion”? — and now the time’s come for it to leave some mark. In the United States, at least.
Lorenzo Vigas‘ film, co-written with former Iñárittu mainstay Guillermo Arriaga, will begin a U.S. run next month, courtesy of Strand. We were rather taken with From Afar, having said, “Powered by a sea of suppressed, unreciprocated feelings, From Afar beautifully describes the mechanisms of desire in what begins as an almost-love story that ends up something tragically different.

The thriller, which follows the unconventional relationship between a wealthy man and a hustler, is director Lorenzo Viga's debut film. Alfredo Castro and Luis Silva star as the film's central pair. "'From Afar' is one of the most audacious debuts we've seen in quite a while. Vigas has already established himself as a world class filmmaker," said Jon Gerrans of Strand Releasing. A pair of sections that we’ve been covering almost since its inception, the American Film Institute (AFI) announced their selections for the New Auteurs and American Independents line-ups and we’ve got a noteworthy, eyebrow-raising sampling of award-winning items from the Cannes played hellish immigration drama Mediterranea from Jonas Carpignano to Sundance (Josh Mond’s James White) to SXSW (Trey Edward Shults’ Krisha) winners. Since Park City days, our Nicholas Bell has reviewed a good chunk of these titles, but we’ll still likely have a couple of more reviews once the festival begins. Here are the selections and jury members.

Though it’s a harder film festival to regulate and therefore tabulate a comprehensively genuine list reflecting the totality of the fest’s offering per any individual’s perspective, the Toronto Film Festival manages to be a healthy platform for new and developing voices for those willing to sift through the multitude of titles. Of course, many new exciting voices were present that debuted at earlier film festivals, like Berlin, Sundance, and Cannes. From Guy Maddin’s co-director Evan Johnson on The Forbidden Room and Josh Mond’s stunning debut James White out of Sundance, to notable Cannes berths like Laszlo Nemes of Son of Saul, Deniz Gamz Erguven of Mustang, and Thomas Bidegain’s Les Cowboys, 2015 brought a wide variety of new filmmakers to light. In deliberating the Top Ten New Voices out of Tiff, we focused on offerings either unique to the festival or near concurrent premieres with Locarno and Venice.

The first trailer for Desde Alla (From Afar) starts slowly, as a well-to-do, middle-aged man gets to know a street thug. It builds steadily from there, introducing a vibe of intensity that grows louder as the end draws near. Set in Caracas' chaotic lower class communities, Vigas' turbulent story reveals the complex bond between two men worlds apart. A slow-burn psychological thriller.
