Following his debut as Helmut Zemo in the 2017 film Captain America: Civil War, Daniel Brühl reprised his role in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier alongside Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie. Zemo, who played a pivotal role in pitting the Avengers against each other, was anticipated to reappear in Thunderbolts*, where he is a key figure in the comics, even serving as the team’s leader.

However, Zemo’s absence from the Marvel’s Thunderbolts* cast announcement was disappointing for many, given his close association with the team in comics. Despite the significant snub, Brühl has remained optimistic, as he expressed confidence about his return to the franchise in a recent interview.

Daniel Brühl made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as a reimagined take on Baron Zemo in Captain America: Civil War, before returning for the Disney+ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series.
Already a somewhat sympathetic villain given everything he went through in Sokovia during the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Zemo put his differences with Bucky Barnes and Sam Wilson aside in Tfatws to help them put a stop to the Flag Smashers - though he always had his own schemes in play.
Last we saw of him, he had agreed to return to The Raft to finish out his sentence for killing King T'Chaka in an attempt to frame Barnes for a terrorist attack.
When a Thunderbolts (since retitled Thunderbolts*) movie was announced, it was assumed that Zemo would be involved since he is so closely associated with the supervillain strike team in the comics. Marvel Studios went in a different direction,...

Doctor Doom has been touted to be one of the main antagonists of the MCU as the studio’s plans with Kang the Conqueror seemed to have taken a back burner due to Jonathan Majors’ firing. The character has been one of the most beloved villains in the Marvel universe and fans have been waiting for his arrival into the franchise.
Ahead of his rumored appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars, Doctor Doom made a cameo in the Disney Plus series X-Men ‘97. The latest episode of the series sees him aligned with the Zero Tolerance group, which is headed by Bastion and also has Zemo. However, Doom’s involvement with the group has irked fans as the character is not as villainous as the others.

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" follow.
You may not remember that the original "X-Men" cartoon from 1992 kicked off a flurry of '90s Marvel cartoons sometimes known as "The Marvel Animated Universe." This universe is less well known than the contemporary DC Animated Universe ("Batman: The Animated Series" up to "Justice League Unlimited"). The DC cartoons were overseen by a single creative team, so the connections were organic and culminated in story arcs. The Marvel cartoons, though? They all aired simultaneously (rather than in succession like the DC ones) and had different creators, so the most intersection was occasional crossovers.
"X-Men '97" remains laser-focused on the marvelous mutants, but it hasn't been shy about including cameos from other corners of the Marvel Comics setting. Episode 6, "Lifedeath – Part 2" featured Ronan The Accuser (you might remember him as the villain in "Guardians of the Galaxy"). Episode 7, "Bright Eyes," saw Rogue butt heads with Captain America.

The upcoming MCU film Thunderbolts is currently in production, scheduled to be released in May 2025. The Florence Pugh and David Harbour starrer reportedly added another member to its cast. Mulan’s Liu Yifei is reportedly the newest addition to the cast of Thunderbolts. The film is directed by Jake Schreier and also stars Sebastian Stan and Lewis Pullman.
While IMDb shows Liu Yifei as simply an ‘Agent’, fans have been speculating about which role the actress would be playing. While Marvel boasts of many Asian-origin superheroes, only some have had associations with the Thunderbolts. Hence, here are three Marvel heroes that the Chinese superstar could play in the upcoming film.

When it comes to compelling antagonists in the MCU, it has been a kind of mixed bag, as, for every Killmonger, we have had the likes of Malekith and Whiplash. Fortunately, Daniel Bruhl’s Zemo was one of the more interesting villains the cinematic giant had to offer, who despite lacking any superpower of his own, succeeded in breaking the Avengers.
And while Zemo is still out there in the MCU, Bruhl is seemingly putting his future in the MCU in jeopardy with his upcoming HBO show The Franchise.

The mantle of Captain America has been passed to Anthony Mackie’s Falcon, marking a new chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). After inheriting the shield from Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers, Wilson’s journey as Captain America began in the 2021 series “Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

As Marvel has forayed from the TV to the movies and will focus more on Captain America, there are fewer chances of these two actors making a bigger impact in the future. Thus, their absence will be felt, not only by fans but by Mackie as well.

Captain America: Brave New World is going to be released on February 14, 2025, as things stand now as one of the first movies of the MCU’s Phase Five. The movie will star Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America, taking over from Steve Rogers, who was played by Chris Evans in the earlier movies. Now, while Mackie will be joined by some old and some new faces, it seems that MCU veterans Sebastian Stan and Daniel Brühl won’t be returning as Bucky Barnes and Baron Zemo, respectively. The news comes from a recent interview Mackie gave to RadioTimes.
And while Bucky Barnes had a very rough, but greatly executed character development in the series, Zemo was depicted as a villain in the series. Both of them returned for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, an MCU series, and both of them received a big redemption arc in the series,...

Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming movie Thunderbolts has been going through many changes since it was announced. The movie was officially announced at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, with an initial release date of July 26, 2024. Thunderbolts was set to be the last film in Phase 5 of the MCU, but soon things had to be shifted with every crisis the MCU as well as the industry as a whole faced.
Marvel’s Thunderbolts will be released in 2025 (image courtesy: Marvel)
The movie was initially an idea from Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, who wanted to make a movie on the team from the Marvel Comics. But by the time Marvel decided to move forward with the idea, Gunn had already directed The Suicide Squad and was no longer interested in making the movie. By 2022, Jake Schrier was named director of the movie, with Eric Pearson, Lee Sung Jin, and Joanna Calo writing the story.

Have you been wondering about "Wonder Man"? You're in good company. Given the recent news that Marvel is slowing its roll on releasing new TV shows and revamping its television production process to, well, make more sense, the future of most MCU shows is a bit nebulous. It's not that these shows won't happen, but between SAG-AFTRA's ongoing fight for fair pay and the entertainment industry's general post-pandemic belt-tightening, any show that's not already on the release schedule feels a little bit up in the air.
Thankfully, one of the most intriguing upcoming Marvel shows, "Wonder Man," still seems to be in the works as of publication time. With a crowded slate of shows on the horizon, including "Hawkeye" spinoff "Echo," "WandaVision" spinoff "Agatha: Darkhold Diaries", Riri Williams-led series "Ironheart," and reboot "Daredevil: Born Again," it's hard to remember what phase of the MCU we're even in anymore, nonetheless what's releasing next.

Superheroes are nothing without great villains to battle against – and the Marvel Cinematic Universe debuting (proper) his major new Multiverse Saga villain.
It’s a brilliant performance and a promising sign of more dastardly deeds to come – but where does it sit in the pantheon of MCU villains? Empire counts down the best baddies from Marvel’s shared universe so far – who we either love to hate.
15) Zemo
If we were going by Captain America: Civil War alone? Then Zemo would be way up this list – a defiantly human villain who uses his own smarts, the simmering resentments underlying Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and a bombshell historical revelation around Tony Stark’s parents’ death to tear our Marvel favourites in two. He also drowns someone upside down in a sink, which is brilliantly horrible. But then along came The Falcon And The Winter Soldier. Turning Zemo back into a Baron...

It's been known since 2016 that the third "Captain America" movie wasn't always going to be "Civil War." For one, Robert Downey Jr.'s involvement took some negotiation and you can't have "Civil War" without Iron Man. Second, the original plot was totally different.
As /Film reported at that time, the initial threequel premise centered around the "Madbomb." What is that, you might ask? In the Marvel Universe, it's a device that, through sonic waves, can drive whole crowds into frenzied violence. The device debuted in 1975; the eponymous "Madbomb" storyline ran in "Captain America" #193 to #200, written and drawn by original Cap co-creator Jack Kirby. Nate Moore, a producer on "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Civil War," aptly compared the Madbomb to the rage-inducing Sim cards in "Kingsman: The Secret Service."
"Cap 3: Madbomb" still would have featured the return of Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Baron Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) as the villain.

“The living are not done with you yet,” T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) tells Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) at the end of Captain America: Civil War (2016). While those words don’t belong to filmmaker Ryan Coogler or co-writer Joe Robert Cole, they seem to inform their thinking on the socio-political landscape in Black Panther (2018) and its sequel Wakanda Forever. This is evident in the way Coogler’s films invoke the ancestors, but also the ways in which they reference the history of colonialism, capitalism and racial strife.
In a cinematic universe that has largely focused on looking ahead, Coogler takes the time to not only look back, but to wrestle with the past in a meaningful way.

Where are the Avengers? For fans of shared universe stories, that question can get very annoying very fast. It makes sense for those new to the concept to wonder about the whereabouts of other characters, but for long-term fans, the answer is simple: someplace else.
Too much worrying about what Thor is doing while Doctor Strange fights Scarlet Witch or why Ant-Man never helped Shang-Chi stop the bus rampaging through San Francisco distracts from the main hero’s story. Just enjoy Doctor Strange and Spidey and let other heroes worry about themselves.
That said, it does make sense for characters to cross paths at certain events, such as the funeral for Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, attended by all major heroes, including T’Challa. As impressive as that scene certainly was, it has nothing on the funeral scene from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Marvel Studios has finally finished its first phase of films post "Avengers: Endgame," with "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" serving as the bookend to Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It won't be long until "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" kicks off Phase 5 of the MCU in early 2023. This next phase of films looks to have an even more diverse set of films than the previous Phase, featuring a mix of legacy sequels and brand-new team-ups. According to the current lineup announced by Marvel Studios, the film is set to end Phase 5 (which is crazy to think about considering it hasn't even technically started) is "Thunderbolts," based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name.

Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe started by breaking new ground with "WandaVision," the first live-action TV show that was properly connected to the movies. But with the release of "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," Phase 4 is officially in the books with a movie that, among many other things, serves as a touching goodbye to Chadwick Boseman and T'Challa.
But, as is almost always the case in the MCU, this movie also did a lot of work setting up things for the future. Sure, that absolutely includes a brand new Black Panther, but it also may well have set the stage for the end of Phase 5 as well. Indeed, if we're reading the tea leaves correctly, director Ryan Coogler planted the seeds that will blossom into the "Thunderbolts" movie here in a couple of years. Let's do some speculating on the matter, shall we?

Jordan as Erik Killmonger, the writers managed to keep a lid on Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Alongside nods to Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and trade agreements with New Asgard, Wakanda Forever has a major tie to the wider MCU that sets up Jake Schreier’s Thunderbolts.
Hoping to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s answer to DC’s Suicide Squad, the Thunderbolts are a shady cabal of anti-heroes pulled directly from the pages of Marvel Comics. Although some have questioned a Captain America-heavy lineup that includes John Walker/US Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), others think it makes perfect sense given where the franchise is right now.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is an unprecedented success story in filmmaking, a unique experiment in crafting an interconnected universe with dozens of characters and some great stories. But for all its features, the MCU doesn't have a great track record when it comes to its villains. Sure, some are great — like Thanos, the mighty conqueror with some good points that had the internet debating whether he did anything wrong. There's also Zemo, the charismatic mercenary with some rather good taste in music and some good points that had the internet debating whether he did anything wrong. Oh, and who can forget about Killmonger, the charismatic mercenary with some good points that had the internet debating whether he did anything wrong. Other than them — and the "Spider-Man" villains — anytime we had a half-decent villain in the MCU, they died as soon as they were introduced.
That changes with "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever begins with the unexpected, shocking (and offscreen) death of Wakanda’s King T’Challa, victim of an unspecified disease that even his brilliant scientist sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) could not stop. It’s a harrowing, relatively brief prologue to the film that, of course, reflects the real-life 2020 passing of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman.
T’Challa’s death seemingly leaves Wakanda, now ruled by T’Challa and Shuri’s mother, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), vulnerable, especially since no one is stepping up right away to take on the mantle of the country’s protector: the Black Panther. So the other nations of the world, including the U.S. and France, conspire to find ways to obtain the vibranium that only exists under Wakanda’s soil.
But there is another player on the field via the undersea kingdom of Talokan,...

The Ancestral Plane is a personal thing for each person who accesses it. This truth was made explicitly clear in the original Black Panther movie. During that 2018 landmark superhero epic, the metaphysical space is revealed as a destination reserved for members of the Wakandan royal family. New arrivals to the afterlife see a uniquely individual paradise that best suits the events and memories from their own lives.
For Chadwick Boseman’s King T’Challa, that came in the form of a psychedelic savannah wherein his father was waiting. For his wrathful cousin it was in the Oakland apartment from his childhood where he knew his father for a short time.
So when Letitia Wright’s Shuri arrives at her own version of the Ancestral Plane in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, viewers’ excitement and anxiety is piqued. When she utilizes an artificial Heart-Shaped Herb,...

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever begins with a nation in disarray. Their beloved leader King T’Challa, the Black Panther, has died, just after he brought Wakanda onto the world stage. Despite the vast sacrifices he and Wakanda made to battle Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and despite the gift of Vibranium he gave to the world, it wasn’t enough. Various Western forces — including those of the US government, led by the Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine — want to take advantage of the country’s mourning, driving Namor to force Wakanda into conflict with the underwater nation of Tālocān.
By the end of the movie, Wakanda defeats Namor and his army, thanks to the leadership of the new Black Panther, Shuri. But it’s hardly a simple happy ending. Wakanda Forever operates best as a transitional middle chapter, as the movie closes with many questions left unanswered.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown quite a bit since we last visited Wakanda. We’ve met new comic characters in film form, like Shang-Chi, The Eternals and Ms. Marvel, as well as Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight. Thor, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and Doctor Strange have all received at least second if not third (or in Thor’s case fourth) installments within their respective hero’s journeys. But of course, the worst news involves the passing of Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed Prince and then King T’Challa in “Black Panther” (2018).
Boseman’s character has not been recast, and the legacy he left behind serves as its own presence in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” The world of Wakanda has been slowly introduced over the last few years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it might be helpful to brush up on who has crossed the borders of the hidden nation,...

For nearly 15 years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been thriving on the big screen. In that time, True Believers have seen some of the biggest superheroes of all time like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor star in their own incredible movies. As the years went on, Marvel Studios has been able to bring a few deeper cuts from your local comic shop to the mainstream, like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Shang-Chi, and the Guardians of the Galaxy. And now that Disney+ has been such a huge success for Kevin Feige and company, the floodgates are wide open to explore even more as shows like "WandaVision," "Ms. Marvel," and "She-Hulk: Attorney At Law" make a splash on the streaming service.

Back at San Diego Comic Con, Marvel Studios announced that Thunderbolts would be the grand finale to MCU Phase 5. Fans had been excited to see if the classic Marvel Comics antihero squad would emerge in the MCU, and now we know that they will. Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is calling the shots, and Yelena Belova appears to be the leader, alongside the Red Guardian, Winter Soldier, US Agent, Taskmaster, and Ghost.

Marvel has unveiled the cast of its upcoming “Thunderbolts” movie, and it’s exactly who we expected (and we’re not complaining).
The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the Suicide Squad — don’t hate, we’re just describing facts here — will be staffed by Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen).
And to top it off, as suggested by her machinations in “Black Widow” and “Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is around, likely as the team’s handler. Which makes sense. You wouldn’t keep having her show up like Samuel L. Jackson used to do unless she’s gonna be the new Nick Fury.

Boseman’s final two live-action performances, as an inspiring leader of a Vietnam platoon in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, and as an electric jazz musician in the film adaptation of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, earned nominations and victories for an Academy Award, a British Film Academy Award, and other top prizes.

Ever since three of its key members died or retired in Avengers: Endgame, MCU fans have all had the same question: who even are the Avengers anymore? MCU chief Kevin Feige has been pretty tight-lipped about when we’ll see the next lineup or who’s in consideration, but a mainstay of the comic book team will be making his way to live-action soon. Wonder Man is currently in production for Disney+, a show about ionic-powered superhero Simon Williams.
Largely unknown to non-comics readers, Wonder Man is one of Marvel’s most interesting characters; a guy with a convoluted history, even by superhero standards. There are many different types of stories that creators can tell with Wondie, but the recent news that Ben Kingsley will be reprising his role as Trevor Slattery gives us a pretty good idea about the type of show Wonder Man seeks to be.

San Diego Comic Con’s Marvel Studios panel covered a lot of ground, mapping out a whole slate of future projects through 2025.
But first some recap: the first three Phases in the MCU were pretty self-explanatory. Each Phase came to an end with an Avengers movie (and maybe a comedic solo film follow-up to act as a denouement). It was all building towards the big battle against Thanos, and once that was done and we saw some aftershocks via Spider-Man: Far From Home, it was time for Phase 4. While there have been plenty of fun movies and shows this phase, it also feels rather formless, leaving us to wonder what this has all been leading to.
Now we know. Phase 4 ends with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever this November. Phase 5 will quickly follow, starting with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in February and Secret Invasion in Spring 2023. But this phase will only last a mere 17 months.

Where is the Marvel Cinematic Universe heading? That’s a question on the minds of many fans, and the answer may be unveiled sooner than you think. It was recently announced that Kevin Feige would finally reveal more about Phase 5 of the MCU in the near future; in the upcoming months in fact!
But according to the Marvel Studios boss, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise for those who have been paying attention. He told Total Film in an exclusive interview, “I think there have been many clues already, that are at least apparent to me, of where this whole saga is going.” So, what’s already been hinted at in previous projects, and where do we think Phase 5 might be going based on that info?

A live-action “Wonder Man” series is in the works at Disney+ with Andrew Guest as the head writer and executive producer for the series, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton is also executive producing the series and might direct an episode.

Marvel Studios may have its next big team-up movie. A film based on the Thunderbolts — a team of supervillains in the Marvel comics — is in early development, with director Jake Schreier on board, Variety has confirmed.
“Black Widow” writer Eric Pearson will write the film, and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will produce. Previously, Schreier directed 2012’s “Robot and Frank” and 2015’s “Paper Towns,” and he’s made several music videos for artists like Kanye West, Selena Gomez, Chance the Rapper, Baby Keem, Benny Blanco, Francis and the Lights, Cashmere Cat and more. With every addition to Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the audience is exposed to new areas that pay homage to the original comics while still bringing in new ideas. For The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, costume designer Michael Crow was tasked with crafting the look for one such area, Madripoor. Although Madripoor is an island located in southeast Asia, the style and culture have more than just Asian influences. “The general idea was to create something that didn’t have a specific time or a specific place to it,” says Crow.
Taking place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the governments of the world are poorly handling the return of half the population, leading to the rise of a radical group of super-soldier terrorists called the Flag-Smashers. With Captain America gone, Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) need to team up and travel the world to stop them.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finished up on Disney+ last week, leaving viewers with a few lingering questions – and a few key answers – about what Marvel has planned for some of its more grounded MCU projects in the future.
Now, showrunner Malcolm Spellman is in the spotlight for a round of interviews following confirmation that he’ll be developing a fourth Captain America movie for Marvel Studios, with the film likely to continue Sam Wilson’s story.
Spellman went over a number of interesting aspects of the series on the Fade to Black podcast, where interviewer Amon Warmann broached subjects that have been talked about in fan circles for quite a while, including a persistent rumor that a large chunk of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was rewritten to remove a pandemic-related storyline.

What’s all the commotion rolling out of the hallways down at the multiplex? Could it be a celebration? Well definitely, since it’s the first new Marvel Studios release of this year, a much earlier release than ever, just a touch over six weeks into the new year (a long way from the first weekend of May, usually considered the start of the Summer movie season). That’s sure to bring a smile to theater owners, who know that this is the start of Marvel Studios’ tenth year. The highly anticipated television adaptation of Caleb Carr’s historically-based 1994 crime novel The Alienist began airing in the Us last night, and Netflix UK didn't wait too long to announce that it's secured the rights to stream the entire first season from 19th April.
Manifesting as a dark-as-midnight-on-a-moonless-night series on TNT, The Alienist is headlined by the duo of Daniel Bruhl and Luke Evans for an intriguingly gritty interpretation of Carr’s novel about the pursuit of a serial killer.
Set in a crime-filled, poverty-stricken, yet industrially-lucrative Gilded Age of New York City in 1896, the series follows an unlikely pair who have come together to investigate the escalating murders of boy prostitutes. The victims have been killed in a manner so disturbingly ghastly that it’s fallen on a newly-appointed,...
