Toho’s 34th Godzilla film is reportedly eyeing a new director after Takashi Yamazaki-directed film Godzilla Minus One won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. According to sources, the director of the Bleach live-action movie, Shinsuke Sato, will be Toho’s new choice of director.
It is also reported that the film will not be a sequel to the earlier film and will be a standalone work. Fans are not exactly thrilled to hear this news, as they believe that Toho is wasting a great opportunity.

Godzilla Minus One was truly a spectacle. The film has been regarded as one of the most successful films of the Godzilla film series, and its director, Takashi Yamazaki, can be thanked for it. The film has received a lot of critical acclaim for many different reasons. One of its most prominent assets is its visual effects, impressively winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

The film also made a lot of money during its box office release, almost going above $116 million worldwide. Despite all its success, it would seem that Toho Studios made a huge mistake less than a year after the film’s release that will certainly affect its profit.

There’s no doubt that Takashi Yamazaki’s last year epic film Godzilla Minus One was quite a big win everywhere it would go. Released in late 2023, the movie was quick to garner $115 million worldwide with the initial budget of only $12 million and eventually even multiplied its grand success by landing an impressive score of 98% from both critics and viewers.
With an Academy award for Best Visual Effects under its belt, Godzilla Minus One is still a frequent watch choice among those who didn’t make it to the cinemas back in December, but the movie’s current popularity among viewers seems to be a questionable matter.
According to Torrent Freak’s most recent data, Godzilla Minus One is the number one movie to be streamed illegally through pirates’ sites, surpassing even Dune: Part 2 and Nicholas Cage’s horror film Arcadian for the week of May 6.

Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One, which made history by winning the first Academy Award in the venerable 70-year-old Godzilla franchise this year, reportedly also broke the record for the most pirated movie ever.
Set in the aftermath of Japan’s defeat in World War II, Godzilla Minus One, made for a reported $15 million, became a global phenomenon earning $116 Million worldwide.
The movie, which had a limited theatrical release in December 2023 due to low box office expectations, has ended up being the most pirated movie of all time, followed by Dune: Part Two. The data extrapolated by Torrent Freak, the go-to site for all things piracy, said the movie is the most pirated film in the chart, followed by Dune: Part Two and Arcadian.

“I’m back,” Hamaguchi Ryûsuke exuberantly proclaimed—in English no less—when introducing his latest film, Evil Does Not Exist, to a rapturous response from a New York Film Festival crowd in 2023. His punchy opening line was more overtly declarative than the work he was there to present. After his two-release breakout year in 2021 culminated in an Oscar victory for Drive My Car, Hamaguchi might have taken the familiar path of following up such a win with a big directorial proclamation. Instead, his latest feature belies the nature of its title and proves to be more of a question than a statement.
Some of this may be due to the genesis of Evil Does Not Exist, which doesn’t lie entirely with Hamaguchi himself. Ishibashi Eiko, his composer on Drive My Car, approached the director to create footage to accompany her live performances. Inspiration struck, and Hamaguchi’s remit expanded...

The original 1954 "Godzilla" film may look a bit worn 70 years after its release, but one aspect of the movie is still capable of reaching across time and space to rattle the nerves of modern moviegoers: that famous kaiju roar. Ishirō Honda's groundbreaking film brought its eponymous creature to life with a screeching, discordant sound that sends tingles down the spine, and it's a noise that the latest Toho Studios masterpiece, the critically acclaimed "Godzilla Minus One," aimed to emulate and expand upon.
In an interview with A Frame, the sound team behind the Oscar-winning film explained exactly how they put together the new Godzilla roar, a stunning noise that punctuated the film's first trailer and sounds even better in context. According to writer-director Takashi Yamazaki, he and the sound team decided to create the latest roar in part by replaying the original audio in a space that would allow for major echoes and reverberations.

Recently, Takashi Yamazaki's "Godzilla Minus One" made Academy Award history by winning the Best Visual Effects category, becoming the first film in the decade-spanning franchise to win an Oscar. An absolutely deserved win aside, it is one that feels both unexpected and a long time coming, with the future of the kaiju looking brighter than ever. One of the reasons why "Godzilla Minus One" is such an impactful entry can be chalked up to how humanity bands together to defeat a mammoth, indestructible force while also dealing with a socio-political situation that mirrors some of the bleakest moments in Japanese history. It is a film that ventures way beyond the spectacle of an incomprehensible beast stomping around without any regard for human lives, with the focus often shifting to the intricate inner lives of everyday citizens working together to achieve the impossible.

Fantasy can cross over into several genres where you wouldn’t expect it to be found. Horror is one, of course; I dare you to watch Pan’s Labyrinth and not tell me it’s a horrific fantasy. But another is Science Fiction. Sci-Fi and Fantasy go hand in claw, and no more so than when it comes to Godzilla and his family of monsters.
In this edition of Fantasizing About Fantasy Films, we’re doing something a little different. We’re going with the new modern classic Godzilla Minus One. And while Oppenheimer might not be Christopher Nolan’s best movie, as many fans of the director’s work agree, it is certainly his most acclaimed one. Oppenheimer has definitely been the hit movie of 2023 and has won numerous awards, among which are seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor for Downey. And while most of the world saw Oppenheimer back in 2023, there is one major market that did not show the movie at the time – Japan – but the movie has finally been released in Japanese theaters as well, an incredible eight months after its original premiere.
The reasons for Oppenheimer not being released in Japan last year are quite clear. Japan was the first country to suffer an atomic attack in history. American bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are one of the worst war crimes ever committed in history, and...

Takashi Yamazaki, the Japanese filmmaker behind Oscar-winning smash hit “Godzilla Minus One,” has signed with CAA for representation.
“Godzilla Minus One,” on which Yamazaki served as writer, director and VFX supervisor, earned the first-ever nomination and win for a Japanese production in the VFX category at the Academy Awards earlier this month. The film beat strong contenders such as “The Creator,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” and “Napoleon.” The Oscar win also marked the second time in 55 years that a director won the VFX award.

Ever since his debut in 1954, Godzilla has been referred to in a variety of ways. There's Showa-era Godzilla, Heisei-era, Millennium Godzilla, Sexy Sporty Godzilla, the King of the Monsters, MonsterVerse Godzilla, Big G, and so on. While the character has gone through a number of various comparisons to other species throughout his 70-year screen career, he's generally either referred to as a giant dinosaur or overgrown lizard.
One animal Godzilla has typically not been compared to before is a cat. However, thanks to the directors of "Godzilla Minus One" and the upcoming "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," that is no longer true. To be fair, one reason this comparison has arrived relatively late in the character's life is because special effects technology has grown exponentially over the past few decades. Considering that Japan is one of the most well-organized countries in the world, with a system that works on more levels than the overwhelming majority of other nations, it is quite interesting to see how this result is achieved, and how the specific Japanese identity plays a crucial role in it. In so many ways, Christopher Nolan’s intricate, making-of-the-bomb biopic Oppenheimer and Japanese director Takashi Yamazaki’s monster blockbuster Godzilla Minus One couldn’t be more different. But as the two films made their way through awards season this year, many fans began to comment on some of the two titles’ surprising thematic similarities — chiefly, a guilt-ridden meditation on nuclear war and its devastating aftermath.
Before Nolan walked away with the Oscars for best director and best picture Sunday night, Yamazaki made history by giving the Godzilla franchise — which began over 70 years ago in Japan — its very first Oscar win, beating out four Hollywood tentpoles in the best visual effects category.
After his acceptance speech, Yamazaki was asked in the press room backstage at the Academy Awards about his thoughts on his film’s similarities with Oppenheimer and the significance of these two stories achieving such success in the same year.

The King of Monsters finally has his share of Oscars glory.
In an ironic triumph of small over large, Japanese monster movie sensation Godzilla Minus One — which was made for only about $15 million — beat out four big-budget Hollywood tentpoles to win the best visual effects category. It’s the first time in decades that a non-u.S. studio film has won the category. Despite its deep influence on the history of visual effects in cinema, this year was the first time in the Godzilla franchise’s seven-decade history that it was nominated for an Oscar.
Godzilla Minus One was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also headed up the film’s VFX team, which included Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima. The team is now Japan’s first-ever winner of the best visual effects Oscar. In another rarity, a director winning the category has only occurred once before...

Godzilla Minus One was such an epic and delightful surprise blockbuster of 2023. The Kaiju film surprised audiences with its big-scale storytelling mixed with a cathartic human story. The fact that it was made with under a $15 million budget made the feat even more impressive.

Takashi Yamazaki has his first Oscar win! The very first win for any Kaiju/monster tale and that too on an incredible budget that media houses can only dream of. Based on the horrendous backdrop of the deadly World War II, in Japan, the monster tale has not only made it so far because of its epic graphics and VFX works but also for the human elements the movie focused on.

It may have taken a full seven decades, but Godzilla is finally an Academy Award winner. Indeed, "Godzilla Minus One" was not only the first movie to be nominated for an Oscar in the franchise's long, storied history, but it also became the first one to win an award on Hollywood's biggest night. The win caps off a truly amazing run for a movie that kind of came out of nowhere to become a genuine breakout mainstream success story. More on that in a moment.

Waves of joy were interrupted by a brief struggle with the English language as the euphoric group behind Japan’s Godzilla Minus One accepted the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
As soon as the film’s name was announced as the winner, a large flock of representatives from it jumped in the air from several rows in the back of the Dolby Theatre orchestra, many of them waving miniature monsters in the air in celebration.

“Godzilla Minus One” already made history at the Oscars on January 23 when it became the first film in the Godzilla franchise’s 70 years to be nominated for Best Visual Effects. Now, director Takashi Yamazaki can claim the title of Japan’s first ever winner of the Best Visual Effects Oscar. Even more, this is the first Godzilla film to win an Oscar, period.
Yet even more history was by the Toho Studios production on March 10 at the 96th Academy Awards: director Yamazaki is also the winner of this particular Visual Effects prize, as he also served as the film’s visual effects supervisor. A director winning the Best Visual Effects Academy Award has only happened once more before, with Stanley Kubrick taking the honor in 1969 for “2001: A Space Odyssey” as VFX supervisor on that Best Picture nominee as well. (That’s also the only Oscar Kubrick won in his nearly 50-year-long career.

The team behind Godzilla Minus One brought their beloved character with them to the 2024 Oscars. The group walked the red carpet in shoes adorned with Godzilla sculptures gripping the heels, and holding figurines of the fictional monster inside the theater.
The Oscars red carpet isn’t the first place the figurines have traveled this awards season. They were first seen in a video of the group learning they earned a nomination, and later again at the Oscar nominees luncheon last month.

It has been a few months since we got an update on Godzila Minus One ’s Japanese box office total but today Toho revealed on its Toho Movie Twitter account that the historical epic has surpassed 6 billion yen inside its home country. They say you should never meet your idols. But it probably can’t hurt if they’ve endlessly hyped your movie. Earlier this month, Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki got to meet one of his cinematic heroes, Steven Spielberg, bringing a full circle moment for the Japanese filmmaker.
Takashi Yamazaki had the chance to meet Steven Spielberg at the Oscar Nominees Luncheon, with the former receiving an invitation due to Godzilla Minus One being nominated for Best Visual Effects – a first for any movie in the franchise’s now-70-year history – and Spielberg up for producing Maestro. That’s monumental enough, but that Spielberg had high praise for the movie takes the experience to another level. In a social media caption, Takashi Yamazaki wrote (via Google Translate), “I met God. What should I do now? Cry…Moreover, he has seen Godzilla three times. He said he liked the characters.

Japanese Director Takashi Yamazaki Wants to Make a Movie in Response to Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer
Filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki was previously well known mostly in Japan because of all his star-studded works spread across multiple genres. But now, he has managed to land his breakthrough among Hollywood audiences as well through his recent massively critically commended film: the fan-favorite Godzilla Minus One, aka one of the best Kaiju films of all time (if not the best).

The Japanese film Godzilla Minus One seemed to be a surprise hit among fans and was lauded for its VFX and action sequences. The film received an Academy Award-nominated for Best Visual Effects, making it the first Godzilla film to be nominated for the prestigious award. Fans of ‘Godzilla Minus One’ might have something exciting on the horizon. The film, directed by Takashi Yamazaki, was not just a hit for its breathtaking scenes of chaos but also for its deep emotional narrative. Empire Online recently shared some insights from Yamazaki, who hinted at a potential sequel. He’s intrigued by what could come next for Shikishima and Noriko, our lead characters who found a bittersweet end in the last film.
Yamazaki’s thoughts on a sequel are quite intriguing. He believes that even though Shikishima’s battle seems won, the peace they’re enjoying might just be quiet before a storm. He’s curious about how their story could evolve, especially with the ominous signs left at the end of ‘Minus One.’ The director mused about the challenges and excitement of blending kaiju battles with human drama, emphasizing the need to keep a balance.

It might have been Takashi Yamazaki’s lucky day when he was hired to create what has now become an absolute cinematic wonder, Godzilla Minus One. "Godzilla Minus One" is not only one of the best movies of 2023, but also one of the best movies in the entire 70-year history of the "Godzilla" franchise. This is a movie that makes Godzilla a formidable force of nature, a monster to be terrified of and whose atomic breath now has a striking resemblance to nuclear explosions — bringing the King of Monsters back to his roots as an allegory for nuclear power.
Much like "Shin Godzilla," part of the appeal is that "Godzilla Minus One" draws from different sources of inspirations than just other "Godzilla" movies (though this one is also influenced by the first film in the franchise). Director and writer Takashi Yamazaki is a big fan of American movies, and he clearly pays homage to "Jaws" in a key scene. But there are also elements from anime that inspired him subconsciously, including one of Hayao Miyazaki's best films.

Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day – the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. The film made its way over to the United States in December… and it became the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in North America even before a black and white version was released under the title Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Director Takashi Yamazaki has let it be known that he’s interested in making a sequel, and during a new interview with Empire magazine he revealed that he would like to feature some “kaiju vs. kaiju” action in the follow-up, if Toho lets him make it!
Yamazaki said, “I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima’s war seems over, and we’ve reached this state...

If you saw Godzilla Minus One on the big screen, chances are you’re desperate for a sequel. Takashi Yamazaki’s kaiju epic was a massive box office hit, managing to combine jaw-dropping city-smashing sequences with heartfelt character drama and resonant emotion – not bad for a 70-year-old lizard. And if you saw Minus One, you’ll also know – Spoiler Alert – that the film had a highly satisfying but bittersweet ending. On the one hand, our hero Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) was reunited with his presumed-dead lover Noriko (Minami Hamabe) after seemingly taking Godzilla down. But beyond that happy resolution looms danger – there seems to still be life in Godzilla’s fleshy remains down in the ocean depths, while Noriko now bears a mysterious dark mark on her neck. Plenty to explore, then, in a part two.

When “Godzilla Minus One” writer, director, and visual effects supervisor Takashi Yamazaki was nominated for an Academy Award for visual effects this year, he became the first director to be nominated in that category since Stanley Kubrick for his “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Kubrick won that year — the only Oscar ever awarded to the legendary director — and Yamazaki’s extraordinary work on “Godzilla Minus One” makes it seem likely that he could follow in Kubrick’s footsteps. The film is filled with awe-inspiring images, particularly when it comes to Yamazaki’s conception and execution of his famous title character; the rich texture, detail, and weight he brings to the creature make Godzilla the most convincing and terrifying monster of its type since the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park.”
Yamazaki credits his triple role as writer, director, and visual effects supervisor with streamlining the process, even if sometimes the director cursed what the writer created.

Even though "Godzilla Minus One" has ended its record-breaking theatrical run in North America, the film's legacy will undoubtedly endure well beyond the silver screen. To that end, the folks at Mondo have announced the release of a brand new poster based on director Takashi Yamazaki's widely acclaimed monster movie, and it's very much deserving of some wall space for fans of the King of the Monsters.
The poster was cooked up by illustrator Tony Stella and captures this new, terrifying incarnation of Godzilla in all of his powerful, destructive glory. The image was inspired by the film's epic attack in Japan when the monster lays waste to the country just after it had begun picking up the pieces in the aftermath of World War II. Stella uses a hand-painted style that adds a lot of character to the poster while staying very true to what Yamazaki cooked up.
