Last summer saw Brendan Rodgers spend over £100 million as he aimed to improve on the squad that challenged for the Premier League title last season.
There was a huge squad overhaul with the likes of Daniel Agger, Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto, Luis Suarez, Martin Kelly and Pepe Reina all being shown the Anfield exit door, arguably some of them should still be at the club.
With the money that Liverpool got from the sale of Suarez, they invested it on improving the depth of the squad so they could challenge for the title again.
Some of the players Rodgers brought in failed to impress in the early stages of their Liverpool career, most notably Dejan Lovren and Mario Balotelli.
The signings had all Liverpool fans excited for this season, and a recent turn in results suggests that the squad is now starting to gel. However, they...

As often happens after England’s biennial tournament humiliation, the British press and public call for an injection of young blood. This was perhaps louder than ever following this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. The problem is, there isn’t always a hotbed of talent to pick from, especially when the domestic league is full of so much money and foreign purchases.
Nevertheless, coach Roy Hodgson has the task of finding such talent to replace the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Glen Johnson, Michael Carrick and Phil Jagielka. So far, the revolution has introduced Calum Chambers, Nathaniel Clyne, Fraser Forster and John Stones to the Three Lions but, going into 2015, who is next?
When looking for new internationals, it was a shock to see so many average to mediocre players that already have one or two caps, therefore ruling them out of this list.

Countdown's Rachel Riley had her day brightened up in the studio by an unexpected erection.
Stop that sniggering at the back, we're being serious.
Riley posted the awkward moment from the classic Channel 4 daytime quiz on Twitter, when someone successfully found an 8-letter word that had cheeky connotations.
"Gotta love the day job!" joked the show's co-host.
Sometimes these words just pop up unexpectedly...gotta love the day job! @C4Countdown pic.twitter.com/8YGJ66C2ks

Twitter has inevitably found the incident very amusing and a few cheeky sorts have replied to Riley's message with their own smutty innuendos.

In the build up to the Premier League opener between Arsenal and Crystal Palace there have been some big decisions made. Firstly, the departure of Tony Pulis has left Crystal Palace without their saviour and also the man who has proven a thorn in Arsenal’s side year on year.
The other big decisions have been at the feet of Arsene Wenger, whose side have impressed hugely during pre season with the attacking talent at his disposal. Sanogo, Giroud, Sanchez and Akpom have all staked a serious claim for that starting berth, leading the Arsenal attack.
Here is the Arsenal line up:
Szczesny; Chambers, Debuchy, Gibbs, Koscielny; Arteta, Cazorla, Sánchez, Ramsey, Wilshere; Sanogo
Subs: Rosicky, Giroud, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Monreal, Martinez, Coquelin, Campbell

The biggest news of the last week, as the calendar hurtled towards the return of the Premier League was that Crystal Palace had unthinkably parted company with the manager who had turned them from relegation certainties to the brink of a top half finish. Tony Pulis left the club after a summer of insufficient transfer activity – in his eyes – and took his Manager Of The Year award away from the club just days before his former side faced off against Arsenal in front of Sky Sports’ cameras.
The game will see the unveiling of new Arsenal signings Mathieu Debuchy, Alexis Sanchez and Calum Chambers, and there’s a slightly unexpected start for Yaya Sanogo, and it would have been a tough task for Palace at the best of times. Without Pulis, and even with new signings Martin Kelly and Brede Hangeland bolstering the back-line and Fraizer Campbell up front,...

Despite being a 40/1 rank outsider to face the sack first this season, following an unbelievable rescue and revival that saw Palace finish in 11th place in the Premier League, Tony Pulis sensationally quit the club last night after crisis talks with co-owner Steve Parish. Clearly, the crisis was not averted.
Now Palace - who have brought in some solid though mostly unspectacular players with the likes of Brede Hangeland, Fraizer Campbell, Chris Kettings and Martin Kelly from Liverpool – face a last-minute scrabble to bring in a new manager just hours before their season opener against Arsenal tomorrow. If the prospect of facing the Gunners at the Emirates wasn’t daunting enough, Palace must now do it without the manager who reinvented the team last year and brought with him a new footballing mentality that turned the team from relegation fodder to near top half finishers.

Liverpool came through a thorough Fa Cup fourth round examination from Championship club Bournemouth with Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge scoring at Dean Court.
Eddie Howe’s Cherries made a swashbuckling start with Andrew Surman heading over. Brad Jones in the Reds goal had a torrid time from set pieces, palming over a dipping Simon Francis free kick in between dangerous corners.
Marc Pugh nodded into the side-netting from another set play on 20 minutes. Despite rarely threatening during the first quarter, Liverpool went close through Steven Gerrard’s dead ball and then caught their hosts on the counter.
Luis Suarez crossed from the right for winger Moses. His shot flew through the legs of Matt Ritchie and under Lee Camp on his near post. Bournemouth top scorer Lewis Grabban forced Jones into a low stops moments after the restart.
Harry Arter swerved a shot just wide after half an hour.

Championship club Afc Bournemouth have never beaten Liverpool in four previous attempts – all in the Fa Cup. Will their fifth ever meeting produce a giant-killing in the fourth round at Dean Court?
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers will hope to avoid such a banana skin on the eve of his 41st birthday. Cherries counterpart Eddie Howe is five years his junior, but both managers saw their own playing careers blighted by injury. Now they will be their coaching wits against one another.
Bournemouth boast a decent recent home record of just one defeat in the last two months. Nine goals have gone in during their four fixtures on their own patch since Christmas. Liverpool meanwhile have enjoyed mixed results on the road.
Defeats at Manchester City and Chelsea were sandwiched between big scoring wins away at Spurs and Stoke.

Martin Skrtel’s agent has ruled out his client’s chances of moving to Napoli this summer by claiming the Italians would be unable to afford him, according to Sky Sports.
Karol Csonto revealed earlier this month that he was set to hold talks with Liverpool about the future of the 28-year old centre-back, who admitted to his frustration toward the end of last season after losing his place in Brendan Rodger’s starting XI.
Rafael Benitez, who brought the Slovak international to Anfield from Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2008, is understood to be interested in landing the defender for his new club Napoli, who he joined this summer following the culmination of his “interim” stint in charge of Chelsea.
Yet Csonto has rubbished those claims by questioning if the Serie A club could even afford to pay his client’s wages.
Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, he said:

Aston Villa welcome back Darren Bent, Nathan Baker and Karim El Ahmadi following injury lay-offs, while Fabian Delph returns from suspension.
Ciaran Clark and Brett Holman are doubts however having suffered shoulder injuries on international duty and will have their fitness assessed ahead of kick off.
Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina and defender Jamie Carragher are pushing for recalls, but Joe Allen, Fabio Borini and Martin Kelly will miss the rest of the season.

Back to back league wins for Aston Villa have quietened the doom mongers – at least for a little while.
Once considered sure-fire relegation fodder, there are now quiet whispers of survival at Villa Park, and if Paul Lambert’s beleaguered side can replicate that famous 3-1 win at Anfield in December, they will be in with a real chance of dodging the relegation trap door.

Liverpool have Martin Skrtel available again after the defender picked up a knee injury but he will likely start on the bench, while Daniel Sturridge has recovered from a thigh injury, and will likely start, having missed the 4-0 win over Wigan. Joe Allen will probably be the man he replaces. Fabio Borini, Martin Kelly and Brad Jones are all out.
Tottenham may be without Aaron Lennon, who had to be substituted in the Europa League tie against Inter Milan with a hamstring injury. Tom Huddlestone and Clint Dempsey are also still doubts heading into this game, while long-term absentees Sandro and Younes Kaboul remain out. Good news for Spurs is that both Emmanuel Adebayor and Moussa Dembele should be fit and will travel to Anfield.

Brendan Rodgers will have a near full strength squad to pick from when his old friends visit his new home this weekend. Both Sturridge and Coutinho are widely expected to return to at least the bench after being cup tied for the recent trip to Russia in the Europa League after playing for Chelsea and Inter Milan in Europe already this season, respectively.
This squad boost will indeed be a welcome one for Br after seeing his team fall back into last season’s nightmare where nobody in a red shirt can be seen anywhere near the opposition’s six yard box – the loss of Sturridge for the West Brom and Zenit matches made it all too obvious that Liverpool still lack major fire power. It’s a match that is often dubbed the biggest in English football. And as we all know, football is a game decided on numbers, and the statistics that follow these two giants of the game are nothing short of astounding. 37 miles separate the two sides, and they have a total of 37 league titles between them, United leading the way with 19, Liverpool not far behind with 18.
In their strikers, the clubs have the two deadliest forwards in the land. Robin Van Persie tops the table with 16 Pl goals, whilst Luis Suarez is hot on the Dutchman’s heels with 15. But the number that will please United fans, and irk Liverpool fans most, is 21. That is the number of points by which United lead their bitter rivals in the Premier League, and is a stark reminder of just how far Liverpool have to come during this season of transition. Since August, Stewart Downing has had something of a torrid time at Liverpool. It started with him scoring the first competitive goal of Brendan Rodgers’ reign – since then he’s been continuously dropped and recalled from the squad, been publicly criticised by his manager, and played out of position at left back.
Despite this, and talk of a loan move back to his old club Middlesborough, Stewart Downing will not be on his way out of Liverpool in January. He could very well leave in the summer, but, for now, is set to stay.
Read on for three simple reasons why.

After suffering a heavy setback last week against Aston Villa, Liverpool will hope to get back to winning ways this weekend, while Fulham could potentially leap above their hosts with a victory of their own.
With three wins in their last five league games, things didn’t look quite so bleak for Liverpool, but after being just four points from the coveted 4th place, the loss at Anfield last time out brought home the reality to the fans, that this team still isn’t there yet.
Fulham have only one win in their last nine Premier League fixtures but considering the way Liverpool were run ragged last week they will no doubt see this game as an opportunity to try to balance that out a little.
Martin Jols side are strong and competent and if Berbatov finds his eye for goal again, the Whites could prove troublesome for a Liverpool...

It has not been the greatest of starts for new Liverpool boss Brendan Rogers, yet his faith in youth paid dividends last week in the 5-2 thumping of Norwich that gave them their first league win of the season. However they were brought crashing down to earth on Thursday when they were on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline against a strong Udinese team.
Stoke also come off the back of a league victory, after their 2-0 win over Swansea last week that saw them rise up to 12th place thanks to a Peter Crouch double.
This is likely to be an interesting clash due to the fact that Liverpool have yet to register a home win this season, and Stoke have yet to get an away win. However, Stoke have failed to score on their four previous visits to Anfield, and in the previous...
