Director Carla Gutierrez spoke about her new documentary Frida in her new uInterview.
The documentary that follows the iconic painter Frida Kahlo explores the artist’s life through her own words, using diaries, letters, essays, and interviews.
When asked what she learned about Kahlo from the production, Gutierrez told uInterview founder Erik Meers, “I feel like I really knew all the details of her; there was not much that really surprised me when we were doing the research – in terms of facts. But what really surprised me was this opportunity to really hear about her emotions in a very deep, personal way. So to really hear the texture of her person, the texture of her personality, the texture of her essence and her spirit—that was surprising, being able to see her in a very fragile way sometimes, or a very messy way, a very insecure way.”

Lionsgate is planning a May 17th theatrical release for the horror film The Strangers: Chapter 1, and with that date just a month and a half away, they have unveiled a new promo, along with a trio of character posters. The promo is embedded above and is meant to look like security camera footage, with the stranger known as Pin-Up Girl (who doesn’t seem to be able to see through her mask very well) approaching someone’s door. The character posters feature the three strangers; Pin-Up Girl, Dollface, and the Man in the Mask (who is now being referred to as Scarecrow). You can check them out at the bottom of this article.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 was directed by Renny Harlin, who shot an entire trilogy of Strangers movies at the same time. We’ve heard that Lionsgate will also be releasing The Strangers: Chapter 2 and The Strangers: Chapter...

The prosecutor in the “Rust” case says there is “substantial” evidence that armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed unwittingly brought live bullets on the set, leading to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
In a court filing on Monday, prosecutor Kari Morrissey argued that several photos taken on set — including ones taken by Gutierrez Reed — show the live rounds in the days leading up to the shooting. She also argued that the evidence shows the bullets came out of a box of dummy ammunition that Gutierrez Reed brought on set.
Gutierrez Reed is set to go on trial on Feb. 21 in Santa Fe, N.M., on charges of involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering in the October 2021 shooting. She is accused of negligently loading a live round into Alec Baldwin’s gun, which should have contained only dummy rounds.
Baldwin was indicted on Jan. 19 on a separate charge of involuntary manslaughter, and has pleaded not guilty.

Carla Gutierrez, a Peruvian emigre to the United States who made her name as an editor of documentaries (“Rbg”), transitions to director with “Frida” (Time Studios/Imagine Documentaries/Amazon/MGM), which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival on Thursday, January 18.
Long obsessed with Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, Gutierrez was reading some of the books about her and realized there was enough material for Kahlo to narrate her own story. “When I started looking at research material, I found that no one had truly focused on her voice and let Frida herself carry a narrative,” said Gutierrez via a Zoom interview.
She went to her “Rbg” and “Julia” directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West and pitched them the idea of digging deep into a third “kick-ass woman,” said Gutierrez. They became executive producers, but when they went out to find backing, some companies were afraid of a Spanish-language archive movie that might feel historically distant.

The image of Frida Kahlo, the prominent Mexican painter of the early 20 century, is one of the most replicated and commercialized of any artist in the history of the world. From T-shirts to houseware, merchandise of all sorts emblazoned with her face has turned Kahlo into a kitschy, mainstream, decontextualized emblem for Mexican identity. It doesn’t help that the vast majority of her works are self-portraits. Onscreen, the Salma Hayek-starring Hollywood biopic from director Julie Taymor and Paul Leduc’s 1983’s Mexican-production “Frida Still Life” attempted to decipher the tehuana-clad iconoclast via scripted portrayals.
With all that cultural and media baggage on her shoulders, Carla Gutiérrez dares to construct a documentary using a unique approach to such an imposing subject. Director Carla Gutierrez wanted to give artist Frida Kahlo to the people, specifically the people of Mexico who call her an icon. Though Gutierrez herself is a Peruvian immigrant, as a woman from Latin America she was familiar with the acclaimed artist and felt a deep protectiveness of her.
“She’s become such a big icon and there [are] a lot of communities [who] claim her,” Gutierrez told TheWrap’s Editor-in-Chief Sharon Waxman while at TheWrap’s Sundance Portrait and Interview Studio presented by Nfp. “We see ourselves reflected in her art and in her image,” she said.
“I wanted to work on this because I had, like many of us, a connection to her art,” said Gutierrez. “I had not seen a film that had really focused on her voice, completely.” The former editor turned director knew there was a lot of material out there, but much of it wasn’t obvious.

Carla Gutierrez is known in the documentary community for her work as a film editor. She was behind Oscar nominated docs “Rbg” and “La Corona” as well as Emmy winner “Julia.” But in 2022, after two decades of editing, Gutierrez decided to direct “Frida,” a docu about iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, which has its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival this week.
“A few months before we started working on ‘Frida,’ I would say, ‘I’m really content with editing.’ I had no thoughts of directing, but her story really pulled me in and I realized I have to direct this (film). Of course I edited it as well because I couldn’t help myself.”
Told through Kahlo’s own words drawn from her diary, revealing letters, essays and print interviews, “Frida” is an intimate glimpse into the artist’s deepest thoughts, artistic sensibilities and passionate romances.

A flattering profile of tech grifter Elizabeth Holmes in the New York Times. The messy exit of Jeff Shell from NBCUniversal. And a standoff with Variety over a story about a supposedly globetrotting Jeff Zucker purportedly hell-bent on buying CNN.
Hollywood and media was buzzing about all those stories and the person they all have in common is crisis public relations expert Risa Heller, who represented the principal in all of them.
That’s all the more impressive for someone who lives on the opposite side of the country. But with her rising West Coast profile, Heller, CEO of an eponymous New York-based crisis communications firm, has tongues wagging about what appears to be a growing role in the Hollywood crisis P.R. machine.

Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed pleaded not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence in connection to the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchens on the film’s New Mexico set.

Even as the western Rust — which shut down in 2021 following the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins — concluded production last month, more details are emerging from that tragic day. In a new filing, prosecutors are accusing the movie’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, of potentially being hungover when the incident occurred.
As per prosecutors regarding the Rust shooting, “It is likely that Defendant Gutierrez was hung over when she inserted a live bullet into a gun that she knew was going to be used at some point by an actor while filming a shooting scene with other actors and crew members.” It continues, “Her reckless failure resulted in the senseless death of another human being…All Defendant Gutierrez needed to do was shake every bullet and make sure it rattled before putting it in the gun — she failed and killed someone.”

Prosecutors allege that Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed “heavily” drank alcohol and smoked marijuana the night before a prop gun on the film set was discharged and resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Gutierrez-Reed’s lawyers previously sought to have the involuntary manslaughter charge against the armorer dropped, but a response by Santa Fe prosecutors — filed last week and obtained by Rolling Stone — detailed why they believe Gutierrez-Reed should face the charges, even as others have either reached plea deals or had the charges dropped.

New Mexico prosecutors say they will file new charges against Alec Baldwin if further testing shows that his gun was working at the time of the “Rust” shooting.
The special prosecutors in the case, Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis, dropped manslaughter charges against Baldwin in April.
Baldwin had been accused of negligently pulling the trigger, causing the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. But Baldwin’s lawyers provided analysis that raised doubt that the gun was working properly at the time.
The FBI analyzed the gun last year, and broke it during a test firing. In a recent court filing, Morrissey and Lewis said that the gun has been sent to an independent expert for further testing.
“If it is determined that the gun did not malfunction, charges against Mr. Baldwin will proceed,” the prosecutors wrote.
A decision is expected within 60 days.

Prosecutors in the “Rust” case are accusing the film’s armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed of “likely” being hung over when she loaded the gun with the bullet that ultimately killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, something her lawyers have called “character assassination.”
While charges against “Rust” star Alec Baldwin were dismissed, Gutierrez-Reed remains charged with a count of involuntary manslaughter in the “Rust” case. And on Friday, June 9, prosecutors in New Mexico responded to her lawyer’s motion to dismiss those charges.
The special prosecutors in their response wrote off the motion as “laughable” but also revealed that they will have witness testimony that Gutierrez-Reed was drinking and smoking in the evenings leading up to the “Rust” shooting.

Prosecutors have alleged, in response to a motion to dismiss from her attorneys, that she was likely hung over when she loaded a live bullet into the revolver that eventually fired, striking and killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
“It is likely that Defendant Gutierrez was hung over when she inserted a live bullet into a gun that she knew was going to be used at some point by an actor while filming a shooting scene with other actors and crew members,” reads the response.
The prosecutors’ response, delivered on Friday, accused the weapons supervisor of having a history of reckless conduct and argued that it would be in the public interest for her to “finally be held accountable.” A preliminary hearing...

Refresh for updates. Over two weeks after the final police report on the fatal shooting of Rust Dp Halyna Hutchins by Alec Baldwin last October was handed over to the local D.A., the document has been made public.
Amidst dense listing of events and inventory from local police, the FBI and others, the 540 page report reveals a set in chaos even before the shooting of dp Hutchins on Oct. 21, 2021 (Read The Report Here.)
Ross Addigo, a dolly grip who was present when the tragic incident took place, and heard armorer Hannah Gutierrez saying that the prop gun was clear, details that there were issues with her in the previous week. At a time when so many crime thrillers tend toward the dark, gritty and prestige-minded, Peacock’s Leopard Skin stands out for being none of those things. While its setup sounds typical enough for the genre — a botched heist, terrified hostages, secrets and standoffs and betrayals — its execution proves to be anything but.
Created, written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez (Jett), this series dances backward and forward in time, taking leisurely detours down semi-random rabbit holes and flights of fancy. It rarely misses an opportunity to admire the beauty of the (frequently unclothed) female form, or to plug into the crackling tension, amorous or otherwise, coursing between its characters. It’s ostensibly a drama, but one studded with oddball jokes.
All these excesses are held together not with airtight plotting, but through a hazy dream logic that at times feels downright opaque. As such,...

A model whose police report caused sex crimes prosecutors to investigate Harvey Weinstein in 2015 — two years before his colossal downfall in 2017 — testified in Weinstein’s rape trial on Tuesday at the criminal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles.
Ambra Battilana Gutierrez — who is an uncharged witness in Weinstein’s current trial — was at the center of a NYPD sting operation in 2015. She had cooperated with police to wear a wire and record Weinstein, following her allegations that he had groped her breasts and put his hand up her skirt during a casting meeting. Gutierrez’s participation with the cops led to Weinstein being investigated, but former Manhattan D.A. Cyrus Vance opted not to prosecute the case and Weinstein was never charged. After that first brush with authorities, Weinstein continued to court power as one of the most influential producers in Hollywood for more than two years, until further allegations against him ignited the #MeToo movement.

It’s easy to forget that, before he was a multi-multi-billionaire with a penchant for phallic-shaped spaceships and whose record-breaking divorce bill barely scratched his status as one of the world’s wealthiest individuals (current position: number 2 behind Elon Musk), Jeff Bezos was just a regular Wall Street exec with a big idea.
But it’s this pre-global domination period, when Amazon was merely a glint in Bezos’ eye, that’s the focus of a new biopic being touted at the American Film Market.
Entitled Bezos: The Beginning and from Vision Films, the film is based on the book Zero to Hero and, according to director Khoa Le, looks to “tell a story about a person that works a 9-5 job, doesn’t have entrepreneurship experience, but has this idea of building something that was going to change the future.”

It’s no surprise that director/animator Genndy Tartakovsky has become the cinematic leader of 2D TV animation. Going against the grain of the great dialogue-driven, comedic animation that dominates TV, Tartakovsky has instead offered bold visual storytelling that borrows heavily from movies and comics. Indeed, with both his Emmy-winning “Samurai Jack” and current Adult Swim series, “Primal,” the Russian émigré has achieved a masterful minimalism that is rare for TV. He has not only displayed stunningly graphic action, but also expressive silence. “As my career has been progressing, I feel that my timing has become slower and slower because I want to get to that level where you’re really looking at something,” Tartakovsky said. “Genndy has always been one of my animation heroes,” said director Jorge Gutierrez, who is currently developing the fantasy/adventure series, “Maya and the Three,” for Netflix. “He’s also an incredible role model...
