"Had a dream last night..." "Dreams don't always make sense." Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for Stronghold, an indie post-apocalyptic thriller made by Brazilian filmmaker Julia Camara. This will be available to watch on VOD in August - doesn't look like good enough for theaters anyway. Stronghold is a dystopian tale of resilience in which a young survivalist and her mother live completely isolated in the woods. When a distressed stranger appears, their lives are disrupted and their future threatened. The film stars Bianca A. Santos and Jaqueline Fleming as the familial pair in peril, and Oliver Rayón as the stranger who shows up, plus Keith Allen West and Narineh Tahmasebian. The film premiered at the Pan African Film Festival in LA this year. The dialogue is rough, the plot is derivative - you've been warned. // Continue Reading ›...

Invitation to Murder is a mystery film directed by Stephen Shimek.
Does a story about England, an invitation, different characters and a murder to be solved sound familiar? They’re called whodonit, and the greatest exponent of the genre was the ever-great Agatha Christie.
Here’s a charming film that captures the essence, step by step, without the minimum intent of originality.
Delightful in its evocation of English traditionalism.
And in its consequent repetition, too.
Movie Review
Curiously enough, this is actually a French production in which everything takes us to England, to those stories that, although already a bit worn out by repetition, continue to captivate. A good mystery for a film that, without a doubt, we have already seen.
There is nothing original in a film that is a tribute to the English writer and, in the end, little more than a rather televised episode that may entertain...

"You gotta get down into the muck if you wanna find the truth." Lionsgate has revealed the official trailer for another whodunit murder mystery movie called Invitation to a Murder, which is skipping theaters entirely and is debuting on VOD directly in April this spring. Once you get a look at this, you'll understand exactly why. This is some low rent cheap junk, and the cast is especially mediocre, too. Set in the South of England in 1934. For no apparent reason and also like five other unrelated people, Miranda, a 28-year-old florist, is invited for the weekend in the mansion of billionaire Lewis Findley. What's become of their absent host? And who just murdered one of the guests in cold blood? Of course, there's only one way to find out – pay the money to rent and watch this movie. It stars Mischa Barton, Chris Browning, Seamus Dever, Giles Matthey, Grace Lynn Kung,...

The trailer just dropped for Invitation to a Murder and it looks sprightly and, dare I say it, fun. Set in the 1930s, the murder mystery stars Mischa Barton, who, we must remember, was born in London long before she became a teen star on U.S. television (The O.C.). She plays Miranda Green, who is summoned to a remote mansion belonging to a mysterious billionaire, which begs the question, did they have those in the 1930s? Not many, I wager. Surrounded by five strangers, murder most foul occurs, and Miranda must put on her amateur detective hat to solve the case and avoid being killed herself. Chris Browning, Seamus Dever and Bianca Santos also star. Invitation to a Murder will be available April 25 on...

From acclaimed L.A.-based artist Alex Israel comes ‘Spf-18‘. This will be Israel’s first foray into feature films, as his career has mostly comprised of making splashes in the La art scene. The film itself includes elements of his gallery shows, and Israel describes the film as “An artwork for teenagers, who watch movies at school, on iTunes, and on Netflix.” This trailer for ‘Spf-18‘ seems reminiscent of recent coming of age tales like ‘The Kings of Summer‘ and ‘The Way, Way Back‘, mixed with the cheekiness of a show like ‘The O.C.‘.

It’s hard to mention The Fosters, which returns to Freeform on Monday Jan, 25 for the second installment of its third season, without a discussion of diversity. Since its premiere, the show has been lauded for its diverse cast and portrayal of relationships not often seen on television – particularly on teen TV – such as same-sex relationships and those in a mixed and blended family.
Moreover, the show has always used what makes it different – its fearlessness in representing a wide range of issues that affect real teens (and not just the wealthy, white ones) – to create type of drama necessary to fuel and sustain a long-running soap. Unfortunately, the Foster family enters the second half of the third season on shaky ground, and the show itself follows suit – with a lackluster episode that wavers rather than building to an exciting finish.

Paramount’s big-screen overhaul for Baywatch is beginning to pick up momentum once again, now that Deadline has revealed that a total of seven actresses are in the running – slow motion running, that is – for the lead female role.
Casting the net far and wide, the shortlist includes an array of talent from across film and television, with Pretty Little Liars star Ashley Benson, Alexandra Daddario – possibly paving the way for a San Andreas reunion with Dwayne Johnson – and X-Men: Apocalypse breakout Alexandra Shipp all in the studio’s crosshairs. Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), Shelley Hennig (Unfriended), Bianca Santos (Ouija) and Denyse Tontz (Big Time Rush) complete the stellar list of potential candidates.

After years in development, Paramount is finally moving forward with their big screen adaptation of the popular '90s TV show Baywatch. Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron are starring, with Johnson as "a by-the-book and very serious lifeguard who is forced to team up with a young rule-flouting hothead (Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon." Now Deadline has a list of actresses who are reportedly up for the female lead.
Here they are: Alexandra Daddario (Percy Jackson, pictured left), Ashley Benson (Spring Breakers, Pretty Little Liars, pictured center), Nina Dobrev (Vampire Diaries, The Final Girls, pictured right), Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse), Shelley Hennig (Ouija, Teen Wolf), Bianca Santos (The Duff), and Denyse Tontz (Big Time Rush).

The "Baywatch" movie is a real thing that is happening, so you're just going to have to learn to deal with that fact. But you should know this isn't just some dull reboot, with star Dwayne Johnson promising the comedic take on the material co-starring Zac Efron, will be R-rated. We'll see if the studio actually let's it go that far, but the project has gone from a joke, to something nearly legitimate. I suppose that's what happens when The Rock is involved. And now, a bunch of actresses are hoping to suit up for the movie. Deadline reports that Alexandra Daddario (who starred this summer with Johnson in "San Andreas"), Ashley Benson, Nina Dobrev, Alexandra Shipp, Shelley Hennig, Bianca Santos, and Denyse Tontz are among those trying out for the female lead role. No word yet on what the part actually involves, but the plot for "Baywatch" will revolve...

Bianca (Mae Whitman) is a content high school senior whose world is shattered when she learns the student body knows her as The Duff (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends. Now, despite the words of caution from her favourite teacher (Ken Jeong), she enlists the slick but charming Wesley (Robbie Amell), to help take back her ‘label’ and overthrow the school’s resident mean girl Madison (Bella Thorne) reminding everyone that no matter what people look or act like, we are all someone’s Duff.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If there’s one genre I have a soft spot for, even as a thirty-odd year old man, it’s the teen movie.

Universal Pictures is going to play with the Ouija board once again. The studio has announced the release date for the sequel to the Olivia Cooke-starring horror film, Ouija, that came out last October. This time around, however, the studio is working from a screenplay scribed by the writing team behind Oculus.
Variety reveals that Ouija 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on October 21st, 2016. Nobody is signed on to direct at this point, but it's been revealed that Universal is working from a screenplay written by Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard, who co-wrote the popular mirror-centric horror movie, Oculus, which Flanagan also directed.
As part of their first-look deal with Universal, Blumhouse Productions will back the sequel, with Jason Blum producing alongside Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis and Platinum Dunes' Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. It's also been announced that Ouija 2 will see worldwide distribution.

The Duff
Written by Josh A. Cagan (based on a novel by Kody Keplinger)
Directed by Ari Sandel
USA, 2015
The Duff takes the geek-gets-a-makeover high school formula and tweaks it mostly muddled results. A few naturalistic romance scenes and the efforts of its very able leads, buoy this into watchable territory. However overall this is a film plagued by confusion and several nonsensical plot twists.
Bianca (Parenthood’s Mae Whitman) lacks style and popularity, but living in the orbit of her two popular best friends, fashionista Jess (Skyler Samuels) and athlete Casey (Bianca Santos), she barely notices. The film opens with a Breakfast-Club-esque voiceover from Bianca about how high school used to be broken down into the jock, the nerd, the criminal, the princess, and the basket case, but now that it’s the 21st century, geeks rule the world, jocks play video games, and most of the old social stratifications no longer exist.

CBS Films released their new comedy flick, "The Duff," into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out, and thought it was very entertaining, delivering a good mixture of laughs, drama , and romance. It stars: Allison Janney, Romany Malco, Mae Whitman, Ken Jeong, Bianca Santos, Robbie Amell, Bella Thorne, Skyler Samuels and Nick Eversman. The movie revolved around character, Bianca (Mae Whitman), who is a content high school senior until her childhood, next door neighbor friend, Wesley (Robbie Amell), informs her that she is a Duff (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends, Jess and Casey. This newfound information gets to Bianca so much that it causes her to end her friendship with Jess and Casey, and seek out Wesley's help to unDUFF her in exchange for helping him pass his science class, which he is heavily failing. Unfortunately, the school's hot mean chick/Wesley's ex, Madison,...

I’m at a demographic disadvantage regarding The Duff, being neither an adolescent girl nor someone who enjoys comedies that aren’t funny. Based on the ads, you might expect this new teen clique comedy to have some bite – a Mean Girls for a new generation. Duff is an acronym for ‘Designated Ugly Fat Friend’, someone that more attractive girls let hang around with them for contrast – a “gatekeeper to better-looking friends” – which gives it about the most mean-spirited movie title of late. The title role is played by Mae Whitman, who is short, has distracting eyebrows, and is too old for the role, but she’s neither fat nor ugly, not anymore so than Audrey Hepburn was street trash because her face was dirty in My Fair Lady or Rachel Leigh Cook couldn’t get noticed because she wore glasses in She’S All That. Just once I’d...

For three seasons on "Arrested Development," Mae Whitman was drabbed down and good-naturedly played Ann Veal/Her/Bland aka George Michael Bluth's dull, unattractive girlfriend. And so, when it comes to "The Duff" — an acronym for Designated Ugly Fat Friend — choosing Whitman for the lead role fits in the weird space between obvious and ridiculous. It's obvious and reflexive if your only impression of the actress is from her days on the cult comedy, and ridiculous if you believe that in actual, regular reality, Whitman is anything like Ann. Believing that Whitman is the "ugly fat friend" is just one of the many things you'll have allow for if you have any chance of enduring this tedious teen comedy from beginning to end. The story centers on Bianca (Whitman), a high school senior with two conventionally "hot" best friends, Casey (Bianca Santos) and Jess (Skyler Samuels), and a crush on Vespa-riding,...

Mae Whitman is one of those enormously talented young actors that has been waiting in the wings for a lead role for some time. The 26-year-old already has 119 IMDb credits to her name, breaking out in the mid-1990s with small turns as George Clooney and Bill Pullman’s daughter in One Fine Day and Independence Day, respectively. She has chops for both comedy and drama, and is able to squeeze out droll laughs as the nondescript Ann Veal on Arrested Development and then break your heart as the insecure Mary Elizabeth in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Whitman has such tremendous ability on the screen that it is a pity her first major leap above the marquee is in such a mediocre film. The Duff, based on Kody Keplinger’s novel, is a silly, clichéd and rarely convincing high-school comedy – perhaps because Whitman is too fresh and beautiful...
