A couple months ago, the Shudder streaming service announced that they would be releasing the survival thriller Quicksand in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand on June 23rd… but those plans have now changed. Quicksand‘s has moved back to July 14th, while June 23rd will see the Shudder release of the creature feature Unwelcome.
Directed by Andrés Beltrán (MalaYerba) from a screenplay by Matt Pitts (Fringe), Quicksand stars Carolina Gaitán, who provided the voice of Pepa in Disney’s Encanto, and Allan Hawco of Jack Ryan. The English-language thriller was filmed in the Colombian capital Bogota and tells the story of a married couple on the brink of divorce who become trapped in quicksand while hiking through a Colombian rainforest. It’s a struggle for survival as they battle the elements of the jungle and must work together in order to escape.

Siobhán McSweeney spoke candidly on the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet about how much she’d like to win a BAFTA. Later that night, the “Derry Girls” actress won a BAFTA (hurray!) — for Best Comedy Actress for the fourth and final season of the hit Northern Irish comedy.
In the Netflix show, she plays nun Sister Michael, who acts as a foible for the main group of Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), and James (Dylan Llewellyn), who try to make it through school during the Troubles in 1990s Northern Ireland. As Sister Michael, she rules the school the girls (and James) attend with an iron fist. Being a nun isn’t some higher calling to her, it’s a job — with free accommodation. As Sister Michael, McSweeney is dry, deadpan, and constantly provides the show with some of its best laughs and most iconic lines.

Shout! Studios presents The Magic Flute by Florian Zigl, executive produced by Roland Emmerich, at 325 theaters with expansion likely. A reimagining of the Mozart opera, it follows a present-day teen sent from London to the Austrian Alps on singing scholarship at the legendary Mozart boarding school. There, he discovers a century old forgotten passageway into the magical world of Mozart’s famed opera.
This Harry Potter-ish adventure fantasy stars Jack Wolfe as Tim Walker, who passes from school into the world of the opera and its many adventures as hero Prince Tamino. Wide releases may be picking up steam and Scream, but in terms of new specialty, and family fare, these isn’t much new competition this weekend.
Melissa Boag, EVP of Family Entertainment at Shout! Studios, hopes it will play with fans of magical adventure, Harry Potter, and classical music. Wolfe is a star of Netflix YA series Shadow & Bone.

Unwelcome is a horror movie directed by Jon Wright starring Hannah John-Kamen and Douglas Booth.
A mixture of horror and local bright spots that, as it progresses, stops being “scary” to introduce us to “something else” that, although it will not be that surprising, it is quite interesting.
The creatures that appear will be quite familiar to you (whether or not they resemble the Critters is up to you).
Movie Review Unwelcome (2023)
For a B-movie, it has its merits in some places, especially in terms of cinematography. It knows how to maintain its tone of a fable and coherently interconnect the protagonist landscape with the narrative and the personal dramas of each one. The acting is fine, but no one here is exactly going to win an Oscar.

This article contains major Unwelcome spoilers.
British horror Unwelcome sees city couple Maya (Hannah-John Kamen) and Jamie (Douglas Booth) move to Ireland after a horrific home invasion leaves them shaken. But the new rural home isn’t the peaceful idyll they had hoped for, with a baby on the way. If the violent local family hired to do some building work weren’t enough, they also have murderous Redcaps to deal with. It’s a lot.
“It started originally from a conversation I had with Mark Stay, who wrote the film,” says director Jon Wright. “We were kind of almost making fun of each other, and making fun of ourselves really about what cowards we were, and how, if we were ever confronted with physical violence, how frightening we found it, and how useless we were at fighting. We were saying that being a pacifist is really a kind of...

Director Jon Wright has a good track record when it comes to comedy horror, having previously made high school slasher Tormented (2009) and boozy creature feature Grabbers (2012). His latest film, Unwelcome, adds more monsters to his menagerie, in an effective genre offering that plays like Straw Dogs meets Gremlins, by way of Leprechaun.
Unwelcome opens in a dodgy area of London, where newly pregnant couple Maya (Hannah John-Kamen) and Jamie (Douglas Booth) are brutally beaten after local thugs invade their flat. Nine months later, with Maya’s baby imminent, the pair relocate to rural Ireland, after Jamie inherits his aunt’s house.

With its polyfoam beasties and diddly-dee charm, the latest from comedy-horror specialist Jon Wright sustains suspense amid silliness
The 90s straight-to-video horror series Leprechaun was rebooted a few years back, but this is better. A young London couple expecting their first child escape inner-city dystopia for a diddly-dee Irish village when one inherits their aunt’s country pile. However, such unearned property wealth can never go unpunished – especially not in a housing crisis – and inevitably there’s a catch. Local folklore tells of “little people” – definitely not leprechauns – at the end of the garden, who’ll turn nasty if they don’t get their nightly blood offering.
Man of the house Jamie (Douglas Booth) fears he may not be man enough for this particular house. That leaves his heavily pregnant wife Maya (Hannah John-Kamen) alone to fend off all manner of local threats, including, but not limited to, the Whelans,...

It’s 1994, and the people of Northern Ireland are nearly three decades into a violent conflict known as the Troubles. Civilians — thousands of which died during the fray — are generally divided between Protestant unionists, who want to keep the country under United Kingdom control, and Irish Catholics, who call for a united Ireland. Day-to-day life in Derry involve armed military checkpoints, customary bomb disposals, and the constant hum of danger. Family members are in prison. Others are dead. An end to the Troubles is in sight, but for the teenage girls attending Our Lady Immaculate College, this is the only life they’ve ever known. That it may come to an end right as they graduate only instills further anxiety over the responsibilities of adulthood.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 3 of “Derry Girls.”
Season 3 of “Derry Girls” opens with a dramatic montage set to the tune of uilleann pipes, depicting Erin Quinn (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla McCool (Louisa Clare Harland), Clare Devlin (“Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan), James Maguire (Dylan Llewellyn) and Michelle Mallon (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) leaning pensively against walls, playing soccer and doing cartwheels, interspersed with shots of burning cars and soldiers carrying guns. It’s the sort of montage that belongs in a period piece about growing up in Ireland during the ’90s — and, as it’s revealed, the kind that Erin, Orla, Clare, James and Michelle want to be remembered for, as they’ve created it themselves using James’ video camera. “They told us we were young,” Erin intones in a comically ponderous voiceover, “yet we understood the enormity of it. Netflix and Sky have revealed the six screenwriters selected for the inaugural, year-long Bisha K. Ali screenwriting talent program.

“The world of screenwriting is a historically difficult one to break into, made even more challenging by the systemic issues within our industry,” said Ali. “Our fellowship doesn’t purport to have all the answers, but we aspire to be a part of the movement towards a more inclusive industry.”
Applicants were required to submit a full script and, as part of the program, will be assigned a mentor as well as getting to have one-on-one chats with industry heavyweights including Charlie Brooker, Charlie Covell, Kate Herron, Chandni Lakhani and Laurie Nunn.

What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day than with a first look at Derry Girls Season 3? The hit U.K. Channel 4 comedy — which rose to stateside popularity on Netflix — will come to an end with its upcoming third and final season. Based on creator Lisa McGee’s adolescent years in 1990s Northern Ireland, the series follows teens Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland), Clare (Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), and James (Dylan Llewellyn) through their hilarious teen hijinks, all while living through the difficult political conflict known as The Troubles. “We lived on the edge back then. We were young, wild, fearless,” says James in the Season 3 trailer. While the teaser promises more hilarious misadventures — from school plays to attractive plumbers to losing Clare at a train station — the Lady Immaculate College schoolgirls (and boy) will also have to come to terms with their quickly-approaching adulthood.

A first look at the third and final season of “Derry Girls” is finally here — and just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.
U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled the first Season 3 still and trailer for the show, which garnered global popularity via Netflix. The drama is created and written by Lisa McGee, who mined her own experiences growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.
While Season 1 observed the gang navigating their teens in 1990s Derry against a backdrop of The Troubles, Season 2 charted the group navigating their parents, parties, love interests and school against the backdrop of a precarious peace process. In Season 3 — which still doesn’t have a launch date on Channel 4 — viewers will see that while Northern Ireland is growing up, “this gang of eejits certainly aren’t anytime soon.”

"You have no idea who she is!" Universal Pictures has debuted the second trailer for the film Redeeming Love, a passionate romance story from filmmaker D.J. Caruso and adapted from Francine Rivers' novel of the same name. Redeeming Love is a powerful retelling of the biblical book of Hosea against the backdrop of the California Gold Rush of 1850. Abigail Cowen and Tom Lewis co-star as Angel and Michael, the two young lovers are the center of this story of love against all odds, as they connect despite their differences. Opening in early 2022 in theaters. "Redeeming Love shows there is no brokenness that love can't heal." The ensemble cast also includes Famke Janssen, Logan Marshall-Green, Nina Dobrev, Livi Birch, Eric Dane, Brandon Auret, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, and Josh Taylor. This looks like a passionate story of true love, but the religious aspects seem overwhelming. Enough to turn me away from wanting to watch this.

"They'll need feeding... They'll be hungry." Well Go USA has revealed an official trailer for creature feature horror film Unwelcome, the latest from Irish filmmaker Jon Wright (of Grabbers and Robot Overlords previously previously). The film spins a tale of what happens to people who come in contact with the violent, bloodthirsty goblins known originally in Irish folklore as the fear dearg or "far darrig," now often referred to worldwide as the "Redcaps." Londoners Maya and Jamie escape their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland only to discover malevolent, murderous goblins lurking in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden. Those nasty lil creatures. Unwelcome stars Hannah John-Kamen and Douglas Booth, with Niamh Cusack, Colm Meaney, Kristian Nairn, and Jamie-Lee O'Donnell. This look frighteningly good! Not only a bunch of scary little creatures, but the look and feel of it is top notch as well.

“Derry Girls” is ending with its upcoming third season, creator and writer Lisa McGee said Thursday on Twitter.
“It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series,” McGee wrote. “‘Derry Girls’ is a coming-of-age story following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly… very slowly… start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new more hopeful phase — which was a small, magical window of time. ‘Derry Girls’ is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It has been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved.”
That place was (pretty obviously) Northern Ireland. The time was the early 1990s, which was toward the tail end of a 30-year-long ethno-nationalist conflict there dubbed “The Troubles.” “Derry Girls” navigates that period through...

Nicola Coughlan is calling for more complex female roles in television. In an essay penned for The Guardian, the 34-year-old actress reflected on her career and expressed her hope to see more "complicated" female characters on screen. Before she played Penelope Featherington on Bridgerton, Coughlan portrayed Clare Devlin on Derry Girls. The star recalled reading the script for the first time and thinking the characters were exactly what she'd been waiting for: "properly funny, obnoxious, unlikable at times." But she also remembered the show's creator, Lisa McGee, receiving a note to make the character Michelle (played by Jamie-Lee O'Donnell) "a little softer, less...

If there's one thing we love more than The Great British Baking show, it's their annual holiday specials. And this year, our favorite Irish lasses from Derry Girls will be taking over the tent for a one-off episode that'll see the cast competing for the title as Star Baker in the Great Festive Bake Off on New Year's Eve. The always-hilarious Nicola Coughlan announced the news on Twitter in November, confirming that yes, the special will also air in the Us (on a yet-to-be-announced date), and yes, she still has nightmares about fondant icing.
