AMC’s historical drama Turn: Washington’s Spies received a renewal for a fourth season that wraps up the entire series...
Fans of the AMC show Turn: Washington’s Spies just received what would have to be double-edged bayonet on their musket. The basic cable giant’s dramatic serial depiction of the American Revolution’s famed Culper Spy Ring just received a renewal for Season 4. However, said renewal also comes with a crucial caveat in the bittersweet news that the upcoming new season will be its very last.
AMC officially announced that the final turn for Turn will ultimately occur at the conclusion of the freshly ordered Season 4, set for a 10-episode run that will air in 2017. While the series hasn’t quite been the ubiquitous ratings juggernaut as network peers such as The Walking Dead, it has developed a strong fan following, with the...

Many child actors peak at a young age and turn their careers into an embarassing lineage of poor roles in second-rate films. Not Jamie Bell, the breakthrough star of modern British classic Billy Eliot. The English actor is putting out some of the finest work of his career in 2014, with striking supporting turns for directors as diverse as Bong Joon-ho (in Snowpiercer) and Lars Von Trier (in Nymphomaniac).
Meanwhile, Bell has amassed his first major role since he put away those ballet shoes close to 15 years ago. He portrays Abe Woodhull, a member of American’s first spy ring, on AMC’s new drama Turn, which airs on Sundays at 9:00 (Est). Although it could be strange to watch a British actor portray an American who is spying on the British, Bell infuses his role with strength and vulnerability, in what could be a real career, ahem, turn for the actor.

On a very competitive night that included HBO’s Game of Thrones season opener, CBS’s Academy of Country Music Awards and, yes, WrestleMania 30 on pay-per-view, AMC‘s new crunchy-gravel drama Turn logged a hefty 2.1 million viewers at 9 Pm last night. With the repeat viewing at 10:30 Pm, that crowd grew to a cumed 3 million viewers. Among the premiere telecast’s 2.1 mil were 669,000 demo viewers; with the 10:30 Pm repeat factored in, that stat grows to 1.1 million. Even better, the quarterly stats throughout the 90-minute premiere remained consistent, which means viewers did not look at a few minutes of the period piece and respond “Yikes!” With its celebrated anti-hero dramas Breaking Bad and Mad Men gone and entering final season, respectively, there’s a lot of pressure on AMC’s straight-up good-guys-versus-bad drama which promises to feature guys in breeches, waistcoats, and powdered wigs. A popular and comforting misconception of the American Revolution is that aggrieved American patriots united to take up arms against British redcoats, and that a new nation rejoiced as one after finally throwing off the yoke of tyranny in 1783. In fact, our war for independence was a civil war that divided families and neighbors — Ben Franklin’s son was a devoted loyalist, for example, and thousands would flee the colonies after America’s victory. Another substantial segment of the population tried to straddle the fence — switching sides depending on whose troops were closest that day.

Later, discussing the series in an airy Pasadena restaurant, Bell admits he finds the relevance of most period dramas questionable, but Turn — based on historian Alexander Rose’s 2006 book Washington’s Spies about a little-known group of childhood friends who risked everything to help George … Continue reading →

AMC has released a new trailer for its Revolutionary War spy drama Turn, a seres that tackles America’s very first spy ring and the birth of modern espionage tactics. The series which debuts April 6 at 9pm with a 90-minute premiere is based on the book Washington’s Spies by Alexander Rose, and stars Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot). Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) directs the pilot, with Bell playing a New York farmer who forms the Culper Ring in 1778. To be honest, I haven’t heard great things from critics who’ve already seen a few episodes, but the names behind the project (particularly Bell and Wyatt), are reason enough to check out the pilot. Besides, AMC knows a thing or two about cranking out quality original programming so let’s hope that Turn follows suit.

Though he declined to helm the follow-up to his hugely successful “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes,” Rupert Wyatt hasn’t been exactly resting on his laurels, instead opting to help launch AMC’s newest series, “Turn.” While a brief teaser surfaced last month, the week brings a full-length trailer for the show which features a Wyatt-directed pilot. Set during the summer of 1778 and based on Alexander Rose’s “Washington Spies,” the show will focus on Jamie Bell as a farmer who forms America’s first spy ring to infiltrate the British. The two minute trailer makes the show seem more “The Patriot” and less History Channel special, i.e. less stuffy than the logline suggested. If Wyatt can bring the same deft touch he brought to the “Planet Of The Apes” reboot, you can bet we’ll be watching. “Turn” premieres on AMC on April 6th. Watch the trailer below.

With two of its signature shows becoming past tense, AMC is reaching even deeper into the past to stake out its future, presenting "Turn," a high tension spy thriller set in the American Revolutionary War, as its newest scripted offering, set to debut Sunday, April 7. Meanwhile, "Mad Men" will return one week later, on April 13, with the first of seven episodes in the "first half" of its final season, and "Better Call Saul," a spin-off from the channel's now concluded "Breaking Bad," will premiere in November, AMC president Charlie Collier announced Saturday morning on day three of the winter session of the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour in Pasadena. "Turn" stars Jamie Bell ("Billy Elliott") in what AMC is calling a character-driven thriller about the untold story of America's first spy ring, which came to light in the recent book "Washington's Spies," by Alexander Rose. The upcoming AMC series "Turn" is a spy thriller, but with a twist: It's set in 1776 at the dawn of the Revolutionary War.
The series, which stars Jamie Bell as a member of a makeshift spy ring working for Gen. George Washington, is partly based on the book "Washington's Spies" by Alexander Rose. Executive producer Craig Silverstein ("Nikita") says one of the things that got him interested in the material was the fact that the story of the Culper Ring, as Washington's spies were known, is "the first spy story."
"The birth of modern tradecraft was worked out here through trial and error," Silverstein said Saturday (Jan. 11) at the TCA winter press tour. "Aliases, cover stories, dead drops, the idea of a black budget, a lot of cryptography -- these things were invented by the Culper Ring, but out of necessity, not because they came in as experts. What surprised...

Alexander Rose, whose book Washington Spies is the basis for AMC‘s new drama series Turn, said he wrote the book while mulling a different book and discovered little had been written about the spying efforts of George Washington. At the Library of Congress, he said, he discovered a “vast untapped reservoir of intelligence history that had been ignored over the last couple hundred years because, it’s face it, it’s a bit seamy, a bit underhanded.” That treasure trove included Washington’s extensive correspondence with the Culper Ring” who are the focus of the TV series. (Among the correspondence was an exchange between the ringleader Washington over expenses). “At that point I said okay this is what it’s going to be,” Rose told TV critics at Winter TV Press Tour 2014. Set in the summer of 1778, Turn centers on farmer Abe Woodhull (Jamie Bell) who bands together with...

AMC has released another promo trailer for their new 1778 Revolutionary War series Turn, which tells the untold story of America's first spy ring. This looks like it will end up being another incredible series from the network. I'm a big history buff, so I think it will be cool to see this story brought to life.

AMC has released a teaser for its new series "Turn," which is set during the Revolutionary War. But this is not your typical patriots-vs.-Redcoats story.
The show promises to tell "the untold story of America's first spy ring," which is a novel way to explore the nation's war for independence. The series, set to premiere in the spring, stars Jamie Bell ("Billy Elliot," "Jane Eyre") as Abe Woodhull, a farmer in New York who joins a network of spies known as the Culper Ring that helps turn the war for independence in the colonists' favor. It's not entirely a popular position within his community.
The cast also includes Kevin McNally ("Pirates of the Caribbean"), Angus Macfadyen ("Chuck," "Miracles"), Daniel Henshall, Meegan Warner, Burn Gorman and Heather Lind. "Nikita" Ep Craig Silverstein created the series, which is based on the book "Washington's Spies" by Alexander Rose.
What do you think of the teaser?...

As the flagship programs of television network AMC have either finished in grand style (Breaking Bad) or began to wind down into their final episodes (Mad Men), TV viewers are curious to see which new programs the company will unleash next. Today, AMC has released a first look at Turn, a historical drama set in the years after the American Revolutionary War. The drama is set to air in spring 2014 and the early footage certainly looks promising.
Based on a true story that was chronicled in Alexander Rose’s history book Washington’s Spies, Turn stars Jamie Bell as Abe Woodhull, a farmer in British-occupied Rhode Island who banded together with other Rebels to form a group of spies. This collective, known as The Culper Ring, would turn the tide of the war and fight for American independence in the colony. The Culper Ring also pioneered many of the espionage...

Can wigs and muskets replace meth labs and Heisenberg? AMC is still trying to figure out what will fill the monumental gap left behind by "Breaking Bad." Oh sure, there's the Saul Goodman spinoff show but you can't put all your money on one horse. "Low Winter Sun" rode into the fall season on a wave of hype only to underwhelm, with its chances of a second season still hanging in the balance (and looking bleaker each day). But can "Turn" uh, turn things around? The network has dropped the first teaser for the show and it brings together spies, action and history all in one place. Jamie Bell stars in the series, based on Alexander Rose’s “Washington’s Spies,” set in the summer of 1778, and focusing on New York farmer Abe Woodhull, who forms The Culper Ring with a group of childhood friends, who fight for America's independence.

Looks like there’s another Brit plotting to undermine his fellow Brits during the American Revolution. The other guy fighting for the good ol USA is Tom Mison over at Fox’s “Sleeping Hollow”. Now you can add Jamie Bell, who is playing an American patriot in AMC’s “Turn”, which is supposedly based on a true story of a bunch of farmers who were pivotal in helping the colonials win their independence. No headless horsemen or hot witches in this one, though, which makes it just half as interesting as “Sleeping Hollow”. Hot witches goes a long, long way, ya know. "This is war... you never know who's listening." AMC's next original series is a thriller set in a world of espionage long before the age of Carrie Mathison and Nicholas Brody. "Turn" stars Jamie Bell (soon to be seen in "Nymphomaniac") as Abe Woodhull, a farmer living behind enemy lines in British-occupied Long Island during the American Revolutionary War who with a group of childhood friends forms The Culper Ring, a group of secret agents working to turn the tide of the conflict. The series is based on Alexander Rose's book "Washington’s Spies" and looks to feature all sorts of vintage tradecraft. Craig Silverstein ("Nikita") wrote and developed "Turn" and is serving as showrunner, with Rupert Wyatt ("Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes") directed the pilot and Seth Numrich ("The Good Wife"), Daniel Henshall ("The Snowtown Murders"), Heather Lind ("Boardwalk Empire") and more making up the cast.

With Breaking Bad over and Mad Men on the way out, AMC is hitching its wagon to the past in hopes of ensuring a bright future with two new shows: Halt & Catch Fire, set in the early 1980s, and Turn, set in 1778.
