California-based High Octane Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to Ukrainian sci-fi family film “The Bobot” from LevelK.
High Octane Pictures (Hop) is planning to release the film during the second quarter of 2019.
“The Bobot, ” which has been described as the first Ukrainian sci-fi action-adventure film for family audiences, takes place in a near future and follows a 12-year-old dreamer, Vlad, who gets caught in a conflict between two alien forces. Forced to overcome his fears, Vlad joins forces with Bobot, an electric transformer box, to prevent a global disaster.
Like most science fiction films, “The Bobot” raises various issues such as the impact of technological progress on the environment.

Scandinavian sales outfit LevelK has picked up “One Last Deal,” Finnish director Klaus Härö’s follow up to Golden Globe-nominated film “The Fencer.”
Set to world premiere at Toronto in the Contemporary World Cinema section, “One Last Deal” follows Olavi, an elderly art dealer on the verge of retirement who has always put business and art before everything, and embarks on a journey to sell an unmarked painting found at an auction. The film was written by Anna Heinämaa, and it stars Heikki Nousiainen, Amos Brotherus and Pirjo Lonka.
One of Finland’s most successful filmmakers, Härö made his feature debut with “Elina” which won the Berlin Crystal Bear in 2003, while his latest film “The Fencer” was shortlisted for an Oscar and nominated for a foreign-language Golden Globe in 2016.

Close to 40 films will be presented at the inaugural edition of the Russian event.
New films by filmmakers Igor Voloshin, Darya Zhuk and Zaza Urushadze are among the near 40 projects to be presented at the first edition of the KinoPoisk FilmMarket (Kfm) in Moscow next week (Oct 20-23).
Voloshin, whose previous films included Nirvana and I Am, will be pitching his Russian-Slovak thriller The Basement to potential co-producers on Kfm’s first day on October 20.
The line-up of 18 fiction feature projects will also include Crystal by the New York-based Belorussian-born filmmaker Darya Zhuk, currently structured as a co-production between Vice Films (Us), Funky Ferret Films (Germany) and Demarsh Films (Belarus), and Russian writer-director Michael Ides’ Humorist about the “first Soviet stand-up comedian” Boris Arkadiev, to be produced by Metrafilms with Hype Film and Latvia’s Tasse Film.

Women filmmakers were the big winners at this year’s Odessa International Film Festival (Oiff) which closed at the weekend with a gala screening of Naomi Kawase’s film Sweet Red Bean Paste (An), which premiered in Cannes in May.
The festival-goers voted to give the “Golden Duke” Grand Prix to Deniz Gamze Ergüven for her feature debut Mustang.
The Turkish director was also named Best Director by the International Competition jury headed by French writer-director-actress Jeanne Labrune.
The Turkish-French-German co-production had its world premiere in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in May and is handled internationally by Kinology.
