Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has written a very nasty horror film, and teamed up with the director of Wolf Creek to bring us The Belko Experiment. A tale of twisted corporate enterprise which pits co-workers against each other in a game of cat kill mouse. It might sound like Christopher Smith’s 2006 […]

There’s a scene in Fun Home — both the book and the musical — in which a 9-year-old girl shows her father a fanciful map she’s drawn for school. As the father grows more agitated trying to correct and improve it (“This is visually confusing,” he complains), the girl grows more defensive about preserving her vision. (“This is a cartoon!”) For the audience, the scene is a wrenching demonstration of the father’s controlling nature; by the time he explodes in frustration (“You cannot do it like that unless you want to ruin it!”), you are cringing over the mistaken application of his high standards, and his insensitivity to a budding artist’s feelings. Welcome to my dilemma. Amazing Grace, a new musical purporting to tell the story of the 18th-century British abolitionist John Newton, is the “first work of professional writing” by Christopher Smith, a 45-year-old former police officer from suburban Philadelphia.

Can a new musical be 'pre-Broadway' without having a New York theater booked, or without even announcing a timetable for said booking How about a musical largely penned by a previously unknown writer, one who worked as a Pennsylvania policeman, and never formally studied music composition Well, Amazing Grace is that show, and this expensive-looking, high-aiming show that's been in development since 2007, with book, music and lyrics by Christopher Smith the book is co-written with the veteran playwright Arthur Giron opened on Sunday night. So far, so good...

Earth 2 #25
Written by Tom Taylor
Pencils by Nicola Scott, Cover by Andy Kubert
Published by DC Comics
There aren’t many ethnic minority characters in comics, so there is something heartening about seeing Val-Zod, a person with dark skin, sporting a symbol as important to comics as that of the House of El. In the nightmare world of Earth 2, where the world’s greatest heroes are no more and the best of them has been corrupted by Darkseid, this young boy may be the best hope that world has.
Issue 25 has these alternative versions of comic mainstays fighting a desperate battle to save humanity. Tom Taylor’s writing is taut and humorous, and he gives us a moment of rage that Superman will no doubt deeply regret when/if he is ever freed. Nicola Scott’s pencils are crisp, and when combined with Taylor’s colours (it’s...

Batman Eternal #13
Written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV
Art by Mikel Janin and Guillermo Ortego, Cover by Dustin Nguyen
Published by DC Comics
James Gordon has not yet been freed from prison. Let that sink in for a moment. His interrogator at Blackgate Prison is not a fellow police officer but his son, James Gordon Jnr. While the two men have a heart-to-heart, Stephanie Brown loses a friend and Vicki Vale begins to hunt down the Batman, and slowly these individual tales take on lives on their own.
Batman writer Scott Snyder is only one of several talents behind Batman Eternal, a year-long weekly series that runs parallel to Batman. Because of the weekly format, the separate stories can take a slower pace than a reader would normally expect, and having each writer in the series tackle a different genre allows for greater variety in tone and content.

Batman #32
Written by Scott Snyder
Pencils by Greg Capullo, Inks by Danny Miki
Published by DC Comics
There is no shortage of writers who have told stories about the Dark Knight’s early days, and some attempts are more memorable than others. The 12 issue Zero Year is writer Scott Snyder’s own attempt, and it is a testament to his skill that his use of the B-list character Riddler as the villain is paying off. At this stage in the epic, Batman, Lucius Fox and James Gordon are on the cusp of striking at Mr Nygma, with the hope of ending his deadly scheme.
Snyder and Capullo have been at the helm of Batman since the first days of the New 52, and the energy and take-notice writing and art remains as good as it did in their very first issue. Here, Bruce Wayne is well on his way to becoming...

Action Comics #32
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Aaron Kuder, Colours by Will Quintania
Published by DC Comics
Superman is now public enemy no.1. Having been infected with the Doomsday virus in his last battle, the Man of Steel flees the authorities and heads into space. There, he hopes he can get a grip on himself before whoever or whatever is responsible for the strange coma sweeping Smallville makes an appearance.
Superman is a character with a long history behind him. As such, it is difficult to find any storyline that is genuinely original, but even this doesn’t excuse the predictability on display here. The idea of a plan hinging on turning the world against the one person capable of saving it is so clichéd and over-used, it’s amazing to see it still used. Likewise, the concept of Superman struggling to remain decent and just in the face...

Wonder Woman #32
Written by Azzarello
Art by Goran Sudzuka
Cover by Cliff Chiang
Published by DC Comics
Brian Azzarello’s tale of Wonder Woman’s battle against the First Born is finally picking up pace. This is understandable considering Azzarello’s time on the title is coming to an end soon. In these final issues, time is given over to explorations of each God before the final showdown.
Azzarelo and artists Cliff Chiang and Goran Sudzuka continue their beautiful re-imaginings of characters from myth and colours used are bright and vibrant. It is difficult not to view the action in this issue as a precursor of the battle looming a few months down the line. While Azzarelo is a writer known mostly for crime stories, his work on Wonder Woman is just as well-composed and – when he does finally step away from the helm – will be difficult to follow.

Sinestro #1
Written by Cullen Bunn
Art by Dale Eaglesham.
Cover by Dale Eaglesham
Published by DC Comics
Thaal Sinestro is not a pleasant individual. A former Green Lantern who renounced his alleigance and would – eventually – become the leader of the feared Sinestro Corps, whose warriors would spread fear throughout the galaxy.
However, that was a long time ago and much has happened since then. Now, Sinestro is in self-imposed exile on a distant planet, having renounced control of the Yellow Lanterns. His solitude is interrupted by Lyssa Drak, a former recruit who informs that others of his race survived the destruction of his home world of Korugar but are now in mortal danger. Rescuing them will be simple but providing them with a future anything but.
It is a testament to Cullen Bunn’s skills as a writer that knowledge of Sinestro’s extensive backstory is not required to enjoy this,...

Judge Dredd: Mega City 2 – City of Courts #1, Director’s Cut
Written by Douglas Wolk
Art by Ulises Farinas and Colours by Ryan Hill.
Published by Idw Publishing
This 52-page issue is the first in a five part series that sees Judge Dredd working in Mega City 2. Very much a fish out of water and frustrated by MC2′s relaxed laws and safety-conscious bullets, Dredd is hunting down creeps while being shadowed by a television crew who just add to his problems. This miniseries is set in 2094, twenty years before the horrors of Judgement Day and having the opportunity to see this less oppressive, more colourful mega city before the tragedy is great, especially for those versed in Judge Dredd lore.
This is critic Douglas Wolk’s first entry into comics and his writing moves the story forward quickly but yet never feels rushed. Ulises Farinas’ incredibly detailed panels when...

We’ve been a huge of Michael Rowe since his unsettling 2010 debut, Leap Year. An Australian who has lived in Mexico City for the past two decades, Rowe makes his English language debut with his third film, Rest Home, which should film in early 2014. Rowe has been able to work magic with a microbudget, so we’re curious to see how his vision expands as notable names both in front of and behind the camera flock to be a part of his work (Gael Garcia Bernal produced his second feature, 2013’s The Well, which played at the Rome and Morelia Film Festivals). While Us audiences are perhaps most familiar with Australian actress Melissa George from her television work, she’s had memorable roles in works by Christopher Smith,...

Can we talk about the official Oscar site for a minute? The past few years they've really improved it but some things are questionable. Like their live blog of the nominee luncheon being just a series of photos or this weird article about the biggest Oscar surprises evers that seeks to rewrite history and imagine a world where everyone didn't know that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were winning Screenplay for Good Will Hunting. Lmfao. Everyone knew that. But I have to say that I love their nominee questionnaire. Especially the handwritten responses from various celebrities and filmmakers.
